It's very disheartening to be emotionally gaslighted and guit tripped about a simple return. I recognize that I purchased items that normally dont get returned, which was 2 magazines. I ended up not needing them or using them for my admin day as expected and was going to use the returned funds to buy food for my co workers. Instead I was insulted by Naomi who felt it was nessary to acuse me of being like other customers who " read the items and bring them back for money". When I informed her that I ended up not using them and just wanted to get the money back she proceeded to do my return while informing me " its best to not buy things you arnt going to keep". When the return was finished and I informed her I was not okay with how she spoke to me and that I shouldn't be guilt tripped about something as simple as a return. I was then informed " thats okay, next time I won't return them"...which is fine, if its against policy to return those items I understand but to be threatened, mistreated and shamed for doing something simple like not using an item. I have to say something about the fully cooked octopus that sits in the meat display case. After asking several people in the meat department while I was buying ground beef, I realized something strange: apparently nobody ever buys it. It just sits there. And honestly, that says a lot. Octopuses are widely known to be incredibly intelligent animals -- arguably as intelligent as dogs in many ways. Seeing one laid out in a grocery store display case like that feels less like food and more like looking at a very smart creature that shouldn't be there in the first place. It's honestly a little sad. If you're going to sell something like that, maybe it belongs at a specialty seafood market or a restaurant where people specifically go looking for that kind of dish. Martinez is not exactly a hub for prepared octopus, and the fact that it just sits there untouched suggests customers aren't interested. At this point it almost feels strange to keep stocking it. For anyone who understands how intelligent these animals are, seeing it sitting there day after day is more depressing than appetizing. You guys have a serious problem with your employees and the Pokémon machine there. I just witnessed a cashier who still had customers waiting, leave their spot and ran over to the machine to try and get something then run back. I'm surprised you haven't followed what other Safeways are doing and not allowing employees to use the machine while they are on the clock. This is not the first time I witnessed an employee actively helping someone and leave their position just because the Pokémon machine gets restocked it's ridiculous. read more

No parking - drove lot 3x for open spot since construction in front of is now into 3rd mo. Oh, and huge construction equipment in parking spots as well. Since I'm tired of empty shelves, it's just as easy to get to Lunardis. I had to go to this v hills Safeway as I needed only one item and I was right there. My error! I found items on clip coupon that I attempted to load on their app - got to counter and when I asked for help she told me I had to follow all these steps. Actually, I almost got all of them but when I asked for written directions she wanted me to know this process had been in place for 12 yrs - I told her that's why I shop at lunardis - they just provide the lowest price - oh and I have used this Safeway store for 45 yrs and swear that I was promised "no more coupons" when entering phone number. What is going on with Safeway? Why is the store open while under construction? I kept almost running into construction workers going every which way, it smells like paint everywhere, and you can't leave the store when checking out because a lift is in the way of the exit and you have to backtrack through the line to get out. I like they are improving but it seems like they should just close until it's done. read more

Meat department closed Saturday at 4:45 pm stock on shelves nothing to choose from or missing items.The deli. Food looks like it was made two weeks ago. Staff just standing around talking. When entering the store employees smoking and talking the smoke entering the store smelled really bad. well...Im getting frustrated with this safeway. In their "improvements" they effectively have caused a hazard. The raised curbs next to the disabled parking...non disabled people walking to car, trip on raised curb. then TODAY......I reached out to manager today,will be hitting yelp and corporate. Im post op rotator cuff, and the brake system they have to prevent cart stealing almost put me over the top of cart. Manager said they put the line for brakes too close to the lots/islands and that he has reached out to corporate. Well...now I need to reach out to corporate. Im post op, not elderly, cant imagine this putting an elderly person on their ass. This isnt even a homeless area for them to worry about cart thefts. Enough is enough. Martinez Safeway on Alhambra... I will contact surgeon to see if I have damaged my post op. I have my reciept date stamped. I left cart in middle of road with locked up wheels. The staff here are outright rude, Id really rather not have to listen to offensive conversations the staff are having among themselves while having my groceries checked out. Some staff has genuine disdain for their own customers with incredibly judgemental statements about peoples personal situations. I've been shopping at this Safeway for as long as I can remember and I am there once a week. There have always been a few things that annoyed me about this store - the extremely cold temperature and the fact that they sell expired items. I once found items in the freezer section that had expired two years prior! I reported it to a clerk. But other than those things, it was generally a great store with lots of options. Now, these latest "renovations" they've been doing on the store and out in the parking lot are definitely NOT improvements. I have become so frustrated with how they have destroyed my favorite grocery store. First they moved things around, which made no sense. Why move things around after so many years? Then they started tearing up the pavement outside and made it more complicated to just grab a shopping cart. The inside is like an obstacle course the way they have things set up now as they do their remodeling. It is almost dangerous trying to get around and hard to find things! There are displays and tables in weird places and narrow pathways where carts don't even fit anymore. And since they moved items around to different aisles, they actually have FEWER items that I regularly buy. I can no longer purchase certain things at this store because they no longer sell them. Why offer less items than before? Talk about frustrating! I would think with remodeling, they would offer more items, not less! This store is being ruined!!! You should have left it the way it was! It was so much better before!!! You're definitely going to lose customers at this store. read more

Honestly I'm just surprised, came here to grab a quick lunch from their deli and get a combo meal. They now limit the pieces of chicken in the order and you barely get a full meal. Delicious Donuts!!! I loved the workers here as well. Everyone was so nice to me and I was helped all throughout my shopping trip. During the start of my shopping journey, a nice young lady with dyed red hair kindly helped me locate the bathroom, and showed me the way. The bathrooms were surprisingly very clean. Next I went to the bakery to get bread, where I saw big selection of donuts. I decided to purchase the cookie monster donuts and a few sprinkled chocolate for my wife and kids. Wow, I have never seen this sampler variety of buttercream-ed cakes at any other Safeway stores besides the Martinez one. At $15.99, this really wasn't a bad deal. It came with 4 flavors: chocolate, caramel, red velvet and carrot cakes, all divided equally into 4 quarters. I especially liked the caramel cake. The buttercream was infused with caramel sweetness, but it wasn't too heavy or overly sweet. The sponge was caramel-y as well. The chocolate cake came close as the second best. I enjoyed the chocolate richness that it provided. Each bite was packed with deep chocolate flavor. I loved it. The red velvet was not bad, but the sponge was kinda lacking in flavor, and the buttercream was definitely cheesecake but it wasn't a really good one. I didn't get to try the carrot cake. I was full after trying the other 3. The calorie count of these cakes really shocked me. The caramel quarter was 1320 calories. The chocolate quarter was 1200, the red velvet quarter was 1280, and the carrot cake quarter was 1600! So, the whole entire cake was 54000 calories!!!! GASP! I think EVERYONE needs to Edit their old reviews, Post 2022, as Things are definitely much more Improved, as far as 'Items well stocked', especially the Meat & Dairy departments. Here's my honest opinion, Overall. *In store Customer Service is GREAT, especially at the front, Cheryl is the Manager up front, and she's very professional and nice, always ready to help out customers requests. The ambiance has improved, mostly because of the new music line up, very Kool vibe, all genres from the 70s-Current. Savings? YOU HAVE TO DOWNLOAD THE APP, IT'S A GAME CHANGER!!! YOU WILL DEFINITELY SAVE MORE MONEY! It does have a slight learning curve, (Click Coupons at Home, as the store has firewalls everywhere) but you can Ask a Checker, like Claudia, Yadira or Petra, they are very knowledgeable regarding the Safeway App, but the app will help you save more money, and THAT'S my goal. My only thing is I wish the Deli had more Hot Menu Items (Asian, Mexican, etc.) plus a Nice Juice/Smoothie Bar, in the Produce, would be great. Wouldn't that be nice!!! I normally go to Grocery Outlet because the prices are so much better but today I wanted to just stay close to home so I went here. The selection is fine and about what you would normally see at any grocery store around but the customer service is not great. The cashier had a pretty nasty attitude. It can't be that hard to greet someone. I asked if I had received the sale discount on an item and without checking they just said yes. I trusted them and left and they never thanked my for my business. When I got home it turns out I did not get it. Idk why this Safeway has such a low rating. It's as nice or better as any other Safeway that I've ever been to, all the cashiers are friendly here, and two of the most important things to me: it has lots of parking and it's clean! Well-stocked products and decent pricing, too. Although I never shop in a Safeway unless I've added everything to my Just 4 U card in the app first. I used to do a smaller scale version of extreme couponing a few years back and I still LOVE to see how much I saved on the bottom of my receipt in rewards and Just 4 U discounts. Last time I shopped here, it was almost $10 saved off $60 so definitely worth using the app. Today I came for my 2nd booster though. I got both my boosters here, scheduled through the MyTurn website, and both were a breeze! Nancy Do in the pharmacy is great. I could tell she was stressed and a bit crabby at first bc she is the ONLY one running the pharmacy and the vaccinations but she won me over with her speed/efficiency and professionalism so I wanted to give her a shout out and hearts. I felt like I was in an SNL skit at first, hard not to LOL.. I was waiting at the right window which is for vaccines and nobody came so I went to the left window line where Nancy was filling prescriptions. At my turn, she said, "You should be at the other window. Go over there and wait until the vaccination lady comes". "I was over there", I mumbled. When I get over there, 10 seconds later Nancy walks over with serious face, "Can I help you". So I repeat everything. She takes my info and types stuff into the computer for a while and says, "please go wait in the (vaccination waiting) room. I'm the only one here so it will be a while." I literally see her go back to filling prescriptions.. I sit down and no joke just 15 seconds later Nancy comes through the secret side door with face shield and needle. I'm thinking wow I hope she's not mad, and are there two Nancy's? So confused. She read me the standard warnings and was putting on the bandaid before I even realized she had given me a shot. Smooth! Update: Bravo Safeway! You can't even manage to do a rotisserie chicken properly. I just opened the one I bought for supper tonight and it was cooked upside down. All the fat and grease has pooled over the best part of the chicken making it gray looking, gross and inedible. See pic. I'll be giving it to the dogs but..meanwhile I've got nothing for supper. Thanks, well done! If this store wasn't the only store in my area and practically located at the end of my street, I would never step foot in it. It's the epitome of a substandard grocery store in every sense of the word. Good luck if you want anything in the Deli. If you should be so lucky to actually spot an employee behind the counter, a rare occurrence indeed, they will do their utmost to keep their head down as they scurry away to the back to do whatever it is they do back there, all the while being sure to avoid any eye contact. They're actually very adept at it. There is never a "I'll be with you in a minute", or any acknowledgment of your presence whatsoever. I can't begin to tell you how many times I've just given up waiting and walked away. I even complained to the manager about it a year ago, but nothing has changed. You have to watch the dates of the meat carefully. Their pupparoni dog treats are always stale when you first open them. Don't even get me going on the fish department. Bad lobster, old clams and mussels that don't open up. Salmon that's gone off...Ever The bakery has been coughing up the same old tired desserts without any new additions since I've been in the area and that's would be 16 years. Their fruit usually rots before it ripens and their oranges are so bad, they have no business being on the shelves. The only saving grace for this store is the cashiers are pleasant. One star is a stretch. This isn't our local store but a store close to our future home. I went to Safeway here because of the reputation Albertsons / Safeway has in terms of quality produce, full dairy and cleanliness. The produce department was embarrassing to say the least. Veggies all looked to need to be tossed. I would have thrown them out if they were in my home. The store overall was not well stocked and all goods felt old after the produce experience. Dairy was weak as well only having one option for a quart of low fat milk. Finally, an employee was mopping in the Starbucks and the mop was clearly dirty, smelled of mildew and that was the introduction to the store. My customer opinion is that store needs a lot of work and some accountability. read more

I don't get to venture into the "Good" part of Martinez very often. The air seems fresher and cleaner over on this side of the hill. Anyway, I thought it was very strange that there was two Safeway's on the same street. Now I realize that they are very far apart and obviously for two different parts of town. This Safeway seems darker on the inside than the other one. Some isle's that are open and large at the other one are cramped and crowded at this one. I did like how they have an open butcher section. I would have put in an order for 4lbs of ground beef but the two butchers who were working behind the counter didn't even acknowledge me. I was the only customer in a 12ft radius. I just walked over and bought a prepacked 3 1/2lb pack of ground beef. This place is a little out of my way so I don't think Ill be venturing over to the "Good" side of Martinez very often. read more

This Safeway is located conveniently along the route between Pleasant Hill Wine Merchants and my parents' house. We have stopped by on a number of occasions (after wine tasting) to pick up cheese and crackers or fixings for a dish (to take to my parents' house). Parking is not usually a problem and the check out lines move quickly. As Ivy R pointed out, this store does seem a bit dark inside and some aisles are a bit cramped. They do have a nice produce section and a large deli section, including a large display of olives and other salty antipasto goodness. I like that you can just buy what you need, as opposed to having to buy a whole jar of sun dried tomatoes, pepperocinis, etc. read more

This is the Safeway I stop at if I'm on the way to Gayle's house. As it turns out, none of the Safeways I shop really impress, but this one is a personal favourite over the counterparts near downtown Martinez or even Pleasant Hill (off Contra Costa Blvd). My only concern is that like the Albany and Pleasant Hill Safeways, the sandwich line can be slow and they always seem to be out of some key ingredient. My primary complaint with this store is the fact that I have lost literally hundreds of dollars and wasted hours of my time because their meats are quite often spoiled. Probably a full 1/3 of the meat I have purchased from this store has been rotten - only to find out after I get home. Quite often, it is spoiled long before the "sell by" date. Other times, while the meat may not have been spoiled - it's just simply gross. I've had tri-tips that were neither meat, nor fat - but instead some kind of gelatin. Clearly this store doesn't monitor or manage it's product well. And clearly they are buying the cheapest quality stuff they can get away with. Don't listen to the Karens on here; this is actually a pretty great Safeway and I love that there's no self check-out. Nice to actually have a human being check you out. If you are shopping during a rush hour expect to wait - and plan to come at a different time if you're in a hurry. The store has a great selection and has increasingly begin to carry more organic selections which is wonderful. The store is clean except during the late night hours when there is freight everywhere - which is to be expected since they're open all night and their warehouse is tiny. Out of all the decades of my family and of my friend's family going to this Safeway and spending who knows how much, we've never had an experience like the one we had today. After standing in one line for a few minutes a rude cashier tells us she is closed as it is out turn to pay. Even though she assisted a few customers before us and did not mention nor turn off her aisle light to indicate she wasn't going to assist us. Hey no problem, she probably needed to go to on break. There seemed to be an issue on who was supposed to cover the that lane. No biggie right? No cause for anger on our part. ...... But then we went to lane 4 (where unbeknownst to us, we were going to have an issue) another employee started to help a different customer at the same lane we just left that was "closed". What? Still no cause for anger or agitation on our side. We kinda thought it was funny honestly. Then a lovely Cheryl started ringing us out and we were thinking yes we can probably enjoy this beer slightly below room temperature after waiting to get helped for like 15 mins. Still not a problem. But then it started to go down hill quick. My best friend is from Mexico and he's recently become a US resident. He gave Cheryl his Mexican ID where we've used absolutely everywhere (this very same Safeway last week) without a problem. It's a government issued ID right? She took the ID to her manager and we waited again. She comes back and tells us she'll do us a favor and use my ID. I ask her why my friend's ID doesn't work and she said "I can't scan that one". I proceeded to ask what if you couldn't scan mine. Cheryl suddenly copped an attitude and told me that if she lost her job would I secure her. ????? She then proceeded to tell me about all the fines the store currently has. As a customer why should I hear about all that. I'm just trying to buy some Sapporo. You know. Then a fellow co-worker Kristina comes by and I assume she's the manager. She's not but I'm glad she came by. Her calming presence tried to defuse a rage fueled incident. Thanks Kristina. Then Cherly promptly told me to have a nice day. Refusing to sell me the beer stating my friend was underage. We're both 24! She said she couldn't read the DOB on my friends ID and it could be fake. What? It's right on there. All in all we got the beer. At room temperature, but better than no temperature. Was this a race driven incident between two Latino customers and a Caucasian employee. With these tough times it's hard to say. Trump is president. But Cheryl sure had an opinion about us and told it to the customer behind us about how rude we were and tried using a fake ID.
