Apparently this store is one the one that Safeway.com used for our "delivery." So I'm reviewing this one. We ordered $227. dollars worth of groceries on Safeway.com. The order is a contract that the food be delivered. When the food didn't come in the two hour window, we called and were told the food would be 45 more minutes late. But not to worry, the trucks are refridgrated. When the "driver" arrived, it was a small brown car, not a truck and the driver said she is "Door Dash" and that she would not be taking any groceries to our door up our stairs. She said if we didn't come and get the food, we wouldn't get the food period. My boyfriend is very ill and I am disabled. This is why we ORDERED FOOD TO BE DELIVERED. We had to beg her to help with the 9 bags of groceries. We watching in horror as the bags came out of the backseat covered with garbage. It was totally unsanitary. Door Dash is meant for a pizza delivery or a burrito, a one off not 9 bags of food worth more than 200 dollars. She, our receipt and food all reeked of pot and cigarette smoke. The perishable food was warm. When we questioned her about our food being out, she said in our door way we had a "shitty attitude." Our neighbors heard and most likely though she was a friend. We don't have friends like that. She continued to use profanity and we though she would come in and physically fight. Using Door Dash for grocery delivery is a health hazard. I've been ordering Safeway food from Safeway.com for 30 years when I have health issues. It come on time in a refrigerated truck, with people in uniforms clearly labeled, they have dollies to get the heavy food up stairs. Whomever though Door Dash was a good idea made a really bad decision. This is about food safety. They are not reliable when it comes to groceries. They are also supposed to text us if Door Dash is used. It was not. Horrifying experience. Using Door Dash is a lawsuit waiting to happen. read more

I was so happy when I went to the deli and they had my favorite, pre-made salad! I was NOT happy when I approached the deli counter looking for a fork. Upon only seeing chopsticks, I asked the lady behind the counter politely for a fork. "No forks," she said. No forks? "How am I supposed to buy your food if I can't eat your food?" I asked. No reply. No forks at the deli/hot bar. Gimme a break. Every Safeway has forks. read more

We have use the Delivery option about 4 times and only 2 of those times has there NOT been a issue. My mother who is partially blind and not too steady on her feet along with me working a lot, the online delivery was ideal but sadly this particular store used for the Livermore area is not so great. Last month they didn't even deliver the groceries, I called late to the store n customer care to find out they cancelled the order due to no drivers but didn't inform us. Groceries were picked n delivered the next day with a $15 discount which was fine. Today my order was picked and while they rang the groceries up they decided to add 8 manual Grocery items ranging from $1- $7. Now I get when some products won't scan but that's too many so I called customer care. Me and the representative went through the original order n receipt to try and locate these manual prices, we could only determine what 4 of them were, the 3 most high priced Manual Grocery items would could determine as all items were accounted for. Customer Care refunded the 3 manual Grocery items that totaled around $20. Please please check your receipts when shopping online at this store especially when you see "Grocery" manually priced in. read more

I I am at home with sciatica and have been trying to order my groceries online. It is very complicated because after 2 hours and 2 phone calls I learned I have to open two windows and HUNT for the Justfor u offers. The last person I contacted was SALLY and she had no idea what to do. I asked her if anyone else could help me and she said she was the only one there. I asked her and had to be firm about her finding someone who could help me get my order processed by she kept making excuses and then told me to call customer service. WHICH CUSTOMER SERVICE? This is the only store in town 24 hours so I had no choice but to come here when we ran out of Tylenol at 1 AM. Need to say it's a good time to close the registers down to reset them all a handful of customers stand around and they can do nothing to help us. Another pathetic experience at Safeway. Carts left all over the parking lot with none at the store. The floors were filthy this evening. Paper and garbage in the aisles. The bag guy was playing with the conveyor with a piece of plastic, but ignored the cashier asking for his help. I blame the management who do not give a damn about the place. This is NOT a review about this store at 1701 Santa Rita Road. Nor is it about Safeway overall (though it seems to be a systemic problem). It's about something I've been seeing in many Safeway stores. I hope that Safeway management in headquarters Pleasanton, California will read it. I have long admired Safeway stores' delivery of exemplary customer service to the public. The company seemed to have made the decision to focus on quality customer support 15 years ago and it really paid off. The store however has increasingly hired people with abysmal English abilities and placed many of them behind deli counters. The situation of poor communications in Safeway Delis is among the worst I've ever seen. I'm an "Everything On It" kinda guy, so I don't think I should have to place a very simple sandwich order 8 or 9 times. And I love people talking body to me, but when transacting, the spoken English goes a long way towards efficient transacting and happy customers. If I'm at a Safeway deli and point to a salad and ask a simple question about it, it can often put the counter person in Robot Mode, rushing off for a container to scoop the food into, because he/she knows too little English and assumes that I want to order that salad. I prefer the lesser of two evils, slow workers who can communicate, understand the order, and waste less time. I don't equate making motions to give the appearance of understanding to actual work. This has started to spill over to other departments too and I've encountered people with low communications skills working Safeway Customer Service desks. Safeway must know that other customers are experiencing this problem in its stores. And if it were to poll its other employees it would find that the utterly low bar in communications that it has now set is angering them too. These other Safeway workers tell me: "I came to this country with no English, and made it a point to learn the language. Dealing with these new people at work is frustrating for me too." I respect a person's desire to work hard and recognize the desire to look busy as a way of correcting one's lack of abilities, including language skills. But can Safeway PLEASE at least start its English-challenged people in departments where that don't require heavy interaction with customers? Maybe Safeway can learn from Lucky Supermarkets, a chain that puts its non-speakers in the back, working on inventory, or picking up shopping carts and things in the parking lots. Yet,even this not acceptable if it's taking away jobs from Americans and hiring people who can't speak the language. Even Americans with degrees are taking minimum wage jobs, so while I realize this may raise the bar for ESL people like me, hire people who speak the primary language. The language gap and chaos is worsened by most Safeway Delis' use of a "no-number" queueing system, A.K.A. "no organization" queueing. Even when their bosses, losing patience, bark orders at these workers in their native tongues, they look just as clueless. I witnessed the Marina Safeway deli during a big event at Crissy and there was more bedlam than at a Tyson-Holyfield fight. Though Safeway may be saving a lot of money by hiring these people, and it won't miss losing my neighbors' or my deli purchases, it is still destroying its brand. A deli should also be viewed as a potential draw for customers. I'll gradually shop more at Lucky & Trader Joe's and will not miss aggravation and wasted time at Safeway. If you insist on not giving tests I recommend basic training in English -- teach words and phrases like "What, May I, How much, Do you, Can you," and numbers and quantities. Grades- English skills in general: C Grade on English skills in Safeway Delis: F-- (double-minus) I'm brand new to Yelp and if posting a review that refers to many Safeways I've purchased deli products from is not the right process or format please let me know. This store tests my values as a customer. I don't believe in giving my business to establishments that don't appreciate it nor provide good service, but unfortunately I live right next door from this store so the convenience is hard to refute. I have found the staff to be completely disengaged from any sense of customer service and devoid of friendliness and basic manners. I would say about 2% of my visits have I been thanked by the cashier. Small courtesies and customer service values like that can easily indicate how much care they put into serving customers on other fronts, such as food quality and safety. I don't think I have ever been asked by an employee such grocery basics as "hey are you finding everything OK?" even when obviosuly searching for an item. In fact I believe the culture in this store is largely "do your job and ignore the customer at all costs" Thus missing the point of a business in the first place, to serve the customer and provide extra value. I much prefer the Raley's on Sunol, but that's a drive. They have far superior to-go foods, produce, meats, and service attitude. Is it worth driving across town to maintain my stance that poor service shouldn't be rewarded with more business? Granted this is just a grocery store, so my expectations are already low for service, but the consistent lack of service bothers me for some reason. Addionally, isn't Pleasanton the headquarters of Safeway corp? Management should evaluate the culture they are propogating if they care about their customers. read more

Thought I would try this store as it's close to my home but had a bad experience here. The seafood guy ignored me trying to buy some seafood so I walked out. My first and last time coming to this store. I'm sure it's an okay store but I felt insulted. We don't have many Safeway's in SoCal, or at least in my neck in the woods anyway so I'm not sure how this compares to others. I went to this particular one this past weekend and thought it was pretty standard, in general. I went for very random things while in town and was able to find things quickly and easily. I love when stores have a very easy flow where you don't find yourself back tracking. There are stores near me that I still can't find things in so some grocery stores really don't have it figured out. Or maybe it's me? haha. This particular visit, I needed a b-day card, spirits, random spices, veggies, cream and even laundry soap. I didn't back track once which was great because I had very little time on my hands. Cashier was friendly and expedited us through the line quickly. No complaints. My friends who live in the area seem to really like this market, however, I would probably not be so thrilled with this one if it were my home grocery store. Very few organic options. This is a late night review, since I only go here when the other grocery stores in town are closed (after 11pm). It's a nice store. I think the aisle's are a little too tall, so it has that closed in feeling. The service here stinks. Plain and simple. There could be a line 8 people deep at 11pm, and they won't open a new check stand. They have automated checkstands, but turn them off after 10pm. I stood in line to buy two things at 11pm, with a woman who had a 15 minute cart in front of 10 of us that had two items. Still, nobody came to help. I expect this is because of some ridiculous union rule. I've adjusted, left my cold food on the floor of their store, and now I'm sure to get what I need at Raley's during normal hours. Oh dear yelp, why must you force me to give one star? I will attribute the one star to the lady named Carol who really was super friendly and helped me with my returns. In sum...thankfully I have other options! They seem to have hired folks that have no sense of manners/courtesy. A few workers had no idea where anything is. Really? Two people didn't know where to find bottled chai tea? The liquor aisle had unattended broken bottle for quite some time. Umm good thing kids don't drink! LOL! But the final straw was this. I really didn't expect to get yelled at by a checkout cashier after patiently waiting for her to ring up someone at the SELF CHECKOUT and I interrupted her when I calmly said "excuse me". Why would you (Samantha) help some strong dude (just standing behind his cart) when he can do all of that himself? Then you get mad when I ask you to hit one button to approve my transaction? Then you tell me not to explain myself to you? Yikes! Ms. High-n-mighty told me to "Stop talking" to her? Really? Umm that is incredibly rude. She is some 20+ year old woman acting like a bratty 10 year old. Sheesh my 3 year old is more mature than her. Come on Safeway, I spend hundreds of dollars a month at your store and now POOF!! Say goodbye to me! I suppose driving another 1 minute to Raleys isn't so bad after all. These guys are okay. I actually use their on-line and delivery option more than I go to the store. It's a pretty expansive store and most of the people that work there are nice. The managers however seem to think they are something special as the only issues we've had for the 15 or so years we've gone to this place have been with mgmt. Definitely not my favorite, but I do love their on-line shopping since they are the only local grocery store that delivers. read more

Miserable clerks, deli counter people have to be told several times what you want before they understand it, the bakery people never have enough product on hand. I normally shop in Livermore, but this Safeway location was on my way home yesterday morning. Everything was going good..it was early (~8:am) and I seemed to have beaten the crowd. Until I got in line. Being early, there was only 1 checker open, but there was no line. The checker was an older gal named "Susan". She did not want to be there. She very slowly scanned my products, and then gave each one a lift before they dropped to the counter. Almost as if she was making a statement. My food was being purposely heaved in the air, and in front of a supervisor. Maybe the Lucky store employees want my business more. read more

The second to last time I was here the guy making my sandwich kept talking back to me and kept jumping steps, like putting in the oven to toast it when I specifically said not to toast it. More recently the lady making my sandwich was being very sloppy in making my sandwich and I just didn't feel then she crabs things I didn't want on my sandwich then realized I didn't want it. Overall I was not at all at ease with her making my sandwich so I just walked out of there and went to a different safeway for my sandwich. read more

I am absolutely livid. Have had too many bad experiences with the Safeway on Santa Rita in Pleasanton. When you go to self checkout it takes forever for someone to help you if they come at all. There are never enough people if you want to check out the traditional way. I have ordered on line numerous times only to not have anyone answer the phone in the drive up & go. I then have to call the Safeway store phone number only to be out on hold & not have the drive up & go staff come to the phone after numerous pages by customer service. I have never complained. Today was the final straw. I placed in order on 7/17 5pm to be picked up 7/19/ 0800. Went there 7/19 at 4pm only to be told that it was not ready. Really? More than 48 hrs after placing my order. They said it would be ready later that evening. I said that I couldn't pick up that evening. They said no problem....it will be ready the following morning on 7/20. So I went there on 7/20 at 0715. No one answered the drive & go phone number. It went to a voicemail that was full. Customer service answered then tried to page the drive up & go person. No one came to the phone. I called back several times to immediately have my call go to music. There was no "Can I put you in hold?" Finally, I walked in & spoke with a customer service person that was paged for me. She apologized & gave me $5 gift card which was absolutely insulting. I don't care about the money. I am paying extra to have drive up & go to save time & COVID exposure. What is the point of drive up & go if I have to go inside to get my groceries. Finally, it is impossible to complain to anyone at corporate. The operator has a mailbox that is full. I tried to talk to someone by using there type a first & last name then press # instructions unsuccessfully. It should be an embarrassment to Safeway that the customer service at Walmart is better. Unfortunately, I have to take my grocery service to Walmart & Raley's going forward. read more

I am getting mix and match donuts and bagels in bakery section. The staff said I cannot mix despite showing "donuts & bagels" in the label and picture. Just spent 30 minutes shopping in store and 20 minutes standing in line at checkout. It seems the customer in front of me, even after all groceries had been tallied and bagged, had an issue... price check, couldn't find a product, cash withdrawal, or something. I don't have a problem with that but after waiting 15 minutes (only took 5 minutes to tally and bag customers groceries) with no resolution in sight and 3 customers backed up behind me, I gave up, left my groceries on the counter and left the store. I have no idea how much longer it took to finally resolve the customers issue. The problem here is not with the customer, it is that Safeway does not seem to be able to handle customer problems in the checkout line in an efficient and effective manner. For now, I am done with Safeway, they can kiss my $1200/month grocery expenditures goodbye. read more

Everything in this safeway was suuuper easy to find and the staff were friendly (or as friendly as you would expect for a safeway). They made enticing announcements like free starbucks samples and free soup samples and the exact types of things that make my ears perk up. However.... I felt like I was being mugged by every single old person that crossed my path. I don't get it. Is there some sort of Grocery Store Etiquette that I am not being made aware of? Burned hand selecting a roasted chicken and was going to let it go. Upon feeling the burn decided to go back to point out safety concern to manager. Upon informing her, the initial response was there's a warning sign(!!!!) I already know it's hot and didn't need the worn out knee level, approximately 3 inch caution tag to tell me that. For a run-of-the-mill chain grocery store, this place has fantastic meats... they are close to Costco quality without the membership. Not just any Safeway store mind you, just this particular one. This store must be the main HQ store (well since Safeway is HQ'd in Pleasanton). I remember when I lived in LA and visited my bro in Pleasanton, we would come here and I would drool over the meat. Nice big, thick steaks. And the butchers are very friendly and helpful. You want flat-iron steaks cut? sure. Shortribs cut kalbi style? no problem. In fact my big freezer has a few pounds of Safeway meat sitting in there, bought on sale, and waiting for warmer BBQ weather. read more

I had never been to a Safeway before, but frequently shopped at Vons, which is essentially the same thing in So Cal. You can tell the store had recent renovations. Even regular grocery stores have adopted some of the options previously only found at more expensive health food stores, such as an olive bar and a large selection of organic food. I purchased lunch meat here that was very fresh with the sell by date 3 days away. Often in Vons in San Diego the meat is near or right at the sell by date when you purchase. I was amazed when three different employees asked me if they could offer any assistance. It was a nice touch, although by the third time I started to wonder if I looked lost or slightly autistic... This store also has a Starbucks inside, which I don't particularly like but almost everyone else does. The store was extremely clean and well lit. Barely waited to check out. Would definitely go back, particularly because my Vons club card works there as well. read more
