My bad opinions of Safeway(Potrero lately) are varied. From checkers that CAN NOT do simple math to apply a discount to specialty clerks who barely have a clue as to their inventory/prices. (Meat dept.) BUT today I put LUCKY'S on Fulton SF up for review ! The best info I got from staff in last 2 trips was that the permanent closure of that store is on 9/11/26 !! Hint ? The disaster in staffing over last 5 yrs has been like 9/11 in the service field. Just not surprised at all. The strange thing is that the store shelves are stocked and floors etc. are clean. Stopped by for a late night purchase and needed to use the restroom. There is a locked one near customer service - but customers are directed into the stock room and to a truly disgusting, dirty restroom. Trash all over and not clean. No toilet paper. While making my purchase I told the cashier, and she seemed entirely unconcerned. Why isn't the front one available for customers and the stock room one for employees? And why isn't the restroom clean? Makes me concerned what else is disgustingly dirty behind the scene. read more

I ate one of those whole cooked chickens-in-a-plastic bubble, and I've never been as vomitously sick as I've been in my life. I consider myself lucky I didn't have to go to the hospital. I called Safeway customer service the next day, and they didn't seem like they wanted to hear about it. The representative said they'd follow up with me, but they never did. I hate this Safeway but it's close so I have to go there sometimes. I have nicknamed it sketchy Safeway because they are often out of basics, the clientele gets into fights, I'm begged for money in the parking lot, and it's dirty. I try to avoid taking my kids there if I can help it. Produce is hit and miss. They have now raised their prices so there isn't even a price incentive to shop there. You're better off at sprouts, Trader Joe's or any other Safeway in Marin which they seem to better maintain. This store needs a serous facelift and a better security guard. I sure enjoyed my almost $7 for a half gallon of milk and $8 for a head of cabbage. Both items were cheaper at sprouts and maybe even Whole Foods. The employees really care here, however Safeway Corporate does not care about this location. It seems they choose to invest in all the surrounding stores within the area but leave this one alone because it's the smallest and oldest store within the area. The store also deals with a lot of homeless outside the store that deters customers from coming in. Bathroom needs to be cleaned many times a day due to the homelessness and transients that frequent the store. But overall this store has some pretty amazing employees. Lisa in floral has a true talent with what she does. The Starbucks Baristas add so much to this store and the night crew puts a lot of care in stocking their aisles. The customer service booth is busy throughput the day and they have a nice team taking care of the customers. They often get slammed with western unions due to other safeway stores turning customers away. Bakery is hit or miss at this location. Great employees. Not the best area in which the store is impacted by. read more

I have been shopping here since 2005. Everything in this store has gotten soo much worse. First, they got rid of most of their experienced checkers. Everything shunted to the self check line. The store itself smells awful to the point you feel gross when you leave. I know the homeless have always been around there, but it feels like they are the only people in there anymore. The meats are all prepackaged and hide the grey parts to the bottom (and there are no deals anymore). The bakery is barely one aisle. Certain things are always out of stock. The parking lot is always filled with junked cars. Its amazing that this store even is still open. I only stop in for one item in emergencies these days. Truly depressing. read more

On 3/18 at around 5:30pm the brown haired brown eyed security guard at the front right entrance of the store was playing with some girlfriend of his and told me "Keep it pushing" when i tried to see which person he seemingly was trying to apprehend. Apparently he just plays with his girlfriend on the job. Reeked of marijuana too.. Managers, use the date and time I provided to find who was working that particular shift at around that time. During our last Safeway shopping venture in Idaho Springs, CO, my husband & I had a thoroughly positive experience. I needed to pick up an RX & finally decided it was the day for a flu vaccination. The pharmacist, Jennifer was extremely helpful. I did not need the RX for awhile, she had no problem with me waiting until it was needed. She also looked up an RX I had a concern about as well as providing the necessary paperwork. Jennifer was kind as well as professional. Richard, the deliverer of the vaccination was extremely patient & did everything possible to ease my distress & possible soreness. Matt was about to leave his register as the rush was over, but his light inadvertently left on. Even though his mindset was on his other duties, he checked out our groceries with a winning personality displaying humor & warmth. This San Rafael Safeway looks and feels like a supermarket out of a David Lynch film. Dark lighting; claustrophobic interior design; odd-ball/sketchy characters hanging out both outside and inside the store. It's not a scary place by any means. It's just different. As for the the store itself, it's a Safeway... so you'll find what you need (deli, bakery, fresh produce and meats, etc.) at a fair price. This ain't no Whole Foods Market. I'm actually a fan of their baked goods here. I picked up 24 frosted cupcakes for like $10, and they were just as sweet & tasty as anything you'd find at a small-town bakery. Of all the Marin Safeways I've been to, this location gets you in and out the door the quickest. At most other Safeways, it takes forever to pay at check-out (due to limited # of cashiers, elderly shoppers trying to find their Club Card and coupons, etc.). So this San Rafael Safeway definitely deserve props for their fast service. That being said, of all the Marin Safeways, this is the store that I wouldn't want to hang out at for too long, lest my car get broken into. It's kind of a dodgy area, folks. So be alert and shop with caution. read more

On my May shopping trip Breyers ice cream was on sale for $2.99 so I bought seven..when got to cashier I asked her to check if the sale price was still $2.99. All she had to do was scan the item but instead she asked in broken English about the Safeway app..told her I use my Safeway card not an app. She said it was $6.99! Then she got help and he insisted it was $6.99 so I put one back..when I got home and looked at the receipt the six I bought were all priced at $2.99!!!??? When she finally scanned the item she never corrected her misinformation and told me the correct price...two totally incompetent people..the blind leading the blind! I'm a fairly new Marinite - I relocated from Denver this past spring. My "main" grocery store in Denver was also a Safeway, and while it had a few "issues", any negative emotions I had about that store have evaporated since moving here. I'm so conflicted about this review. My now "main" Safeway is this one, on B Street in San Rafael. However, this review also applies to the two Safeways in Mill Valley, since I frequent those as well. The stores are beautiful! There is an abundance of free parking! (F R E E P A R K I N G ! !) The employees that exist are warm, friendly, knowledgeable and extremely helpful! ... all two of them. I swear to God there is some sort of conspiracy happening within or amongst a consortium of Safeway corporate management. I have NEVER -- NOT ONE TIME -- shopped at any of these three Safeways without a MINIMUM wait of fifteen minutes in line to check out. I have NEVER -- NOT ONE TIME -- seen more than two check stands open at once; one regular, and one "EXPRESS" (ha ha ha ha ha ha). Have you ever been forced to, like, MATH at a grocery store?? Well, I can't math to save my life. But at Marin Safeways, if you're buying maybe five items or less, you are forced to calculate which line will be faster -- the "regular" line of four customers with packed-to-the-brim shopping carts, or the "EXPRESS" (ha ha ha ha ha ha) line of eighty-six customers with one item. It's math. I can't do it. I saw a few other reviews of these stores practically BEGGING Safeway management to acknowledge, recognize or address this issue, but it's beyond clear that they give zero f--ks what their "captive audience" feels. They aren't oblivious to the fact that Marinites' (nearly) only other option is Whole Paycheck. I love picking up sushi, or hot bar, or an obscure pasta or sauce (hello RAO'S!) at Whole Foods but I can't stand "green" cleaning products and I can't afford to pay eighty-five bucks for an organic, cage-free apple and a tin of cruelty-free dolphin-safe mints. United Market now has most of my grocery business; the employees are just as amazing as Safeway's and the store is great. I just prefer the meat selection at Safeway, and a couple other essentials that United doesn't stock. I'll keep going back to Safeway when necessary, but I'll do so under duress. And you will wait in a line for an average of let's say, two days. And the quality of food does NOT compare to Whole Paycheck, TJ's, or United which are your nearest options. Why such a high rating might ye ask? One star just because they exist. Half a star for servicing my needs when I don't want to pay the Flatiron for a quick meal when I really only want to drink and watch the game. And half a star for having beer on sale when I show up. I had two balloons inflated at Safeway in mill valley. One ballon was not inflated to its full potential and I was close to this Safeway on B st. I called and asked if I could get it touched up ,Guillermo answered I let him know I had the receipt. He said no I asked why he said go to the store in strawberry I'll charge you full price. Apparently Guillermo is the store manager. I would expect better customer service he's very unprofessional. I shouldn't pay a "full" price for a ballon that does not need "full" inflation. I see this store as a location challenge and not an employee problem. Tough neighborhood. But I would add that I always feel safe shopping there. Great team makes sure of it. Security in the store has to deal with theft there daily and other problems that go along with it. I love every employee in here. When the going gets tough you never hear them complain. They just try to assist you as fast as possible. BRAVO Safeway team. I am a regular and I have come to see how they embrace the challenges and treat me with a smile and hello. Juliana greeted my with that ever present smile on this trip. I enjoy going through Juliana's and everyone's line. Today it was her turn. I always leave with a smile. The new manager seems to be open and receptive to the needs of the store. I understand supermarket math and how labor is determined. They do the best job they can't with the hours they get. A side note about the outer departments. They rock. Always a smile and friendly help from produce, bakery, deli, meat, Starbucks, customer service desk, and our all important courtesy clerks. I never had a bad shopping experience at Safeway until shopping at the B street Safeway I wanted to pick up the $5 special Friday Fried Chicken the lady at the deli counter no matter how many times I tried to catch her attention she kept ignoring me when she finally assisted me she asked if I was upset I said yes you totally ignored me no matter how many times I tried to gain your attention. I do not like the Safeway downtown San Rafael. The Deli is open to 5:00PM but the Deli people hide or refuse to serve around 4:30PM. If the Deli staff stops at 4:30PM they should post it as such. It's irresponsible, rude and unprofessional. Safeway downton San Rafael is not following Covid guidelines of keeping people 6 feet apart and are not taking people in order. I guess if you say hello in Spanish and Spanish people are working, the Spanish person is served 1st. This seems like reverse discrimination to me or is somthing wrong at this store? My Handicapped dropped a frozen package on the check out belt while he was unloading his basket. Next thing he notices is a bunch of employees and management grouped together staring at him. He asked the checker if he said or did anything to threatening him and the checker said no. Why was Safeway intimidating my Handicapped husband? I do not think he should have to wear a sign around his neck informing you he has physical problems. I told my husband not go to the downtown Safeway but it's the closest. I have lived in the Gerstle Park area in my entire life and the Safeway on D St. has been my preferred grocery store. This store gets a lot of criticism because it is too small even though Safeway wanting to expand and San Rafael refused to let them and in the past has not been fully stocked and kept up. There is a new manager named Lisa who is running the store now who is absolutely fantastic. She has done an amazing job making Safeway run more efficiently. Gracie is the supervisor manager of the store and she is the most fantastic and amazing employee. She is knowledgeable helpful kind courteous and has made sure that the store has been fully stocked ever since she has worked there. The story has never looked so good! read more

This Safeway makes me laugh when I shop here, I have never been to another store where so few of the staff don't give a F*#k. It is a neat shopping experience. Just last week the woman in line next to me had a bird in a cage piled on her cart and it pooped in the checkout aisle. The clerk called overhead "can someone clean up the bird's poop in checkout?" Niiice. I get most of my staples here, canned beans for $1 etc... every friday they have a five dollar deal though, it changes weekly so you might get lunchmeat or a rotisseried chicken. Hate is a very strong word which I usually save for things like: Bee Stings Bad Drivers Parking Tickets Jury Duty But Safeway, I hate you. Well, I hate this location. There are never enough checkers. A lot of the checkers are rude (not the cool manager dude, you're nice). The store is dirty. There are sketchy characters hanging in the parking lot. And people who have food stamps pretend like they don't know what they are allowed to buy, so all the lines take ridiculously long, because they are trying to by cheerios when you can't buy cheerios!
