Awful. Where has customer service gone? Between the re-stock crew treating the aisles like their own racetrack, the cashier who can't even look up from his phone between scanning my items to ask me if I found everything, if I needed a bag today, or literally even make eye contact with me. I don't see why people feel icky about this Safeway. It's probably one of the best in Santa Cruz County. First reason is this store seems to be a hangout among locals in the area. When I come here there is always some nice residents who are willing to talk with me here. Staff members here including the manager are very friendly, always willing to talk to you about anything. This store has the small town charm of piggly wiggly as you see in the East Coast. Everyone is happy and mellow. This store is a bit cramped but it looks like it's well maintained and very clean. Love the cookies from this store for some reason. IDK why but they were good. This place makes a good pit stop if you want to grab some food before going to Santa Cruz beaches. Drawback: Donuts are a bit smaller than the Safeway near my flat. read more

Amy the baker in SV Safeway saved my Christmas! My father had been wanting a Black Forest cake I had completely forgotten in ordering it. When I walked in to asked about ordering, I was told that they were backed up on orders but did ask for information incase they had extras. I got a call on Christmas Eve that Amy is able to make a Black Forest cake. I surprised my dad with the cake, and he was overwhelmed with joy, as that is the only thing he wanted for Christmas. First of all, all Safeway's are notorious for under ripe fruit and produce, this one is no exception. Sure they say you can bring it back, but when you are on a hike or trip and the orange you bite into with anticipation of juicy goodness is pithy and horrible not exactly the refreshment you count on while out on the trail. now try explaining that and the reassurance of returning it for a refund to a bunch of toddlers in tow who are all spitting it out and now fussing! thanks for the win safeway! the reason for this is because they are lazy! they buy all their produce on line, sight unseen without actually sampling any of it, then passing it on to us to do the quality control, offering the no-effort on their part refund, for which they are counting on people just throwing it away and not seeking the refund, basically counting on their customers being "suckers". That is not the real issue of this post, (this time) despite all the grey meat and oddly smelling pork and chicken that I have bought at this location, the real concern here is the FISH! (this time). Having been a commercial fisherman for many years in the past I am qualified to comment here ( certainly more than Safeway as evidence shows). once again the laziness and lack of regard for quality (much like with the produce and meats) is at play here. none of their fresh fish is on ice here. Simply keeping the temp down in the display is never really enough. fresh fish and shellfish needs to sit on a bed of ice. cold air only dries it out. case in point, between visits (3 days apart) I saw the very same slab of salmon which at the time of the first visit had already started looking like salmon jerky. but by now it was looking like a little better than a catchers mitt! the prawns were siting in a slurry of foul looking water with a nasty sheen. the shells by now had taken an unhealthy look and color. the clams and mussels were hard to tells they were bagged but the ooze in the tray was alarming, and a huge warning flag. The oysters on the other hand were individually visible. they were completely stored improperly. without a bed of ice, the cannot be kept at a safe temperature to insure their survival until consumption. they must also be be stored with the deep part of the shells down. why this is important? because oysters retain a bit of liquid in their shells to keep themselves alive. and being bivalves they need to periodically breath, so they will occasionally open up, but if the shadow side is down, they loose all that "oyster liquor " then die. which turns them toxic. what does that mean to the consumer? dinner party ruined, a return Safeway for a refund of a very expensive purchase, or worse yet (and not unlikely) getting sick and possibly death. talk about a dinner party fail! Looking at the way they treat shellfish and fish in general, I would advise not ever buying any fish products from Safeway. they are clearly too irresponsible to supply a safe product. it is just a mater of time before they kill someone. Weeks before posting this comment I spoke with the store manager, told him of my concerns, he thanked me, but nothing changed. clearly these people don't really care. could this be why they are constantly clearing out the poultry section or the meat section? supposedly tossing out product to clean shelves when rotten products are found? and who pays for that? we the consumers ! this store is a great example of how lax food quality and safety concerns is for Safeway then putting it off for the consumer to deal with. It puts customers heath and safety at risk for a dangerous food poisoning but is of little concern to Safeway. Alternatives would be nob hill, Scotts valley market or better yet for fresh fish H&H market. read more

Who writes a review about a grocery store? Well, I am taking the time because Liana went above and beyond to help me. At 8:00 am I went to the store to get some flower bouquets for a graduation. Nob hill had a sorry selection of wilted bouquets. Safeway had a great selection. I asked for help to create bouquets. The floral assistant was not at work yet. The staff was so kind to call for help. Liana came out to pinch hit and was so helpful willing to create the bouquets for me as I was in a hurry. They were beautiful. I went to go get my favorite Chicken Alfredo in the deli aisle. When I went to work to warm it up, I discovered the bottoms of the mushrooms turned moldy, and the chicken was an odd gray color. I immediately tossed it, and I am out $8.99. I would avoid this store in Scotts Valley at all costs. I will go back to Mission Street where they actually toss expired items. read more

Awful store. I spent 10 dollars on a bag of frozen mango here and my card got charged 128 dollars. I went in the store and made a complaint. I was told to write my number on a piece of random paper. I WATCHED THE WORKER THROW IT AWAY AS I WALKED OUT! Getting my money back was tedious to say the least, I spent hours on the phone with the manager. I went here again today (a mistake) because I wanted to eat something for lunch and this old lady cashier stepped in front of me at the self checkout and without asking completed a survey suggesting she was a good employee? Of course she's not, instead of helping people she butting in their transactions and wasting their time! Never once had a good experience at this safeway. read more

Didn't give all products with online order but still charged full amount. There were a ton of products like vegetables that were missing from the order and were charged to us but were completely missing when we picked up the order. We have not been able to get a receipt even though we requested it 3 times and we're trying to chat with an online representative for the third time now. The two previous times we waited for 45 minutes because there was a queue but then when it was our turn to chat they immediately closed the chat. So we've not been able to get any sort of answer as to why so many things were missing and why we were charged so much. Just completely atrocious customer service and legitimately bordering on theft. Instead it's gross incompetence resulting in us paying $250 for probably $125 worth of groceries. read more

Absolutely livid right now. Ordered pick up at 7pm. Given a window of 7pm to 8pm. At 6:55, received an email saying our order pick up was delayed. At 9:30pm (and i think I was more than accommodating waiting 2.5 hours after my original pick up tome), I finally called the store to see what was going on. The woman who picked up said that they stop filling orders for pick up at 8pm and my order "might" be ready tomorrow. I asked to cancel my order and be refunded. She said I had to call the manager in morning to talk to them about it. I asked how to make sure my order was not processed before I get ahold of a manager. Her response? "I don't know; they get here at 6am." So after waiting now three hours past my scheduled grocery pick up time, I'm now told I have to get up and call the manager at 6am to see if I can cancel my order?! I've been on hold with safeway customer service (corporate, I assume) for thirty minutes now. Safeway has been going downhill for years now and cannot keep their staff. Well, now they're losing a customer too. So so angry. read more

Safeway provides a great alternative to the overpriced grocery stores in the county. It provides affordable food for middle-class Santa Cruzans, who're fighting for their lives in this area. The Deli has a great selection of sandwiches. I met the store manager (I forgot his name), who was very willing to answer my questions. The store is clean and accessible. This is the third time I've come into Safeway and while they greet you at the door with "clean" carts, they don't reinforce mask wearing by employees in the store. When I asked for the store manager, the young heavyset long braided pony-tailed girl circumvented my concerns by running in to the office ahead of me. A few minutes later the young male " manager" approached me with several employees in tow. I expressed my concern. He said if an employee is on their break he can't enforce it. He was unprofessional. I went in for late night grocery shopping, the aisles were probably against both OSHA and ADA guidelines as there were boxes EVERYWHERE on both sides of the aisles. Some aisles I couldn't even get to. When I was finished doing the shopping I could access, I was told I needed to wait 15-20 minutes for the system to "reboot". I stated to the clerk they should let shoppers know beforehand to make purchases or they'd have to wait he responded with "there's nothing I can do now, you chose to shop late". What the hell?! Additionally, It's a little petty but I specifically chose items in my cart to receive monopoly tickets. I earned 17 or so but the same guy was like, " is 10 enough?" I was so done being in there I just said it's fine and left. If this is a 24 hour store, why stay open to the public if you don't want the business?! Does customer service only happen when management is brought in? I'll be taking my business to Nob Hill for now on. Keep your dumb tickets. read more

Bad Customer Service In general I don't shop at Safeway other than occasionally when I stop late at night after playing a show ( working musician ). I stopped last night to grab a sandwich and some chips and a drink. Sign says open...doors open. I enter and shop for about 5 minutes and then went to check out. Nobody home...(used to that)... walked around and found someone working. She says "We're closed". "Why are the doors open then? Your sign says open" Reply... "The cash registers update at 1 am and we're closed for 20 minutes" "I've been shopping. Can I just pay you for these?" "Sorry no" So here is a suggestion Safeway Corp ( the worker was polite...not her fault)... Since people leave for home around 12-1 when bars close you might consider a change in policy. -Setup your cash register update at 3 am when there very few people out and about. It would cause less impact to your customers who want to give you money. Orrrrrr... -If you can't do that then lock the doors so you customers don't waste their time. There you go kids. I don't go there during the day and I guess I'll just avoid the place all together now. There's a 7-11 across the street I can hit. Yeah frozen mic burritos!!! I hate to leave such a negative review because I normally have had a neutral if not positive experience with this location. Tonight, a manager - I think, I was not given his name or title - kicked me out of the store because I had brought my service animal in with me. First he told me that animals were not allowed in the store, and then after I let him know that this was a service animal, he proceeded to probe me on "what kind of disability" I had. Then, my support animal did what she is trained to do and barked once to warn me that my anxiety was reaching dangerous levels. I went to get out of the situation and as I was leaving the manager called after me sneering, "See! With THAT behavior especially, it can't be in the store - a service animal would NEVER do that!" ...uhh. Do you mean the behavior she is trained to do?? Ugh. Anyways, all of this could have been easily avoided with some simple training...of the manager(s). How about instead of immediately asking us to leave the store, asking for my dogs papers instead? I have them - every service animal owner does! I would have happily presented them had he asked. I was so taken aback by his clear agenda to just kick us out of the store as quickly as possible, plus the warning from my dog about an impending health crisis, just made it impossible for me to spend any longer in that situation. Just so that management can have an idea of who could clearly use some more training in this area, the employee who spoke with me was a 30+ year old man, bald, and I am not sure of his ethnicity so I will not guess. He was fairly short - about 5'8" or so. Average build. Could use an attitude adjustment. read more

ww have been shopping at Safeway in Scotts Valley for close to 15 years. we have been going there less often due to the quality of service we experience continually. I constantly find one of the senior employees, Matt, engaged in conversations with other employees down the aisles over his or the other employees phones. We have been left standing at the deli for 5-10 minutes while Matt and the deli employees stand around the register and chat away. line can be extremely long due to poor staffing, or employees avoiding the front of the store. read more

I knew there is a reason I never shop at Safeway. I usually go to Nob hill on mount Hermon. I went and bought some dessert cause the ice cream Place I usually go to doesn't have any of the flavors I currently like. So I decided to pop in the Safeway. I was in line checking out, and told the cashier I have a problem with my Safeway card my card work But every time I type in my number the few times it doesn't seem to work. She laughed and looked at me like I was stupid. She said well you Have to go register the card it's not gonna know the number attached to the card. Instead of explaining to me in a professional manor. She laughed like I was the dumbest person alive. And didn't even offer to give me the discount or offer another option or solution to my problem. She said it a super snotty tone your gonna have to figure that out. Yeah won't give this Safeway my Service of my Life depended on it. Teach your cashiers some manors. It was a super small thing but meant the biggest. I worked in customer service for 10 years and I could tell you I would never of treated someone like that. read more

My favorie thing about this business, by far, are the employees. Everyone from the cashiers to the produce people are super friendly and helpful. I'm a regular and have several cashiers who know me by name that my husband refers to as my "peeps." The shelves are always well stocked. Produce is fresh and there is a good variety. Nice meat selection. The store is clean. Parking is plentiful. What more could you want in a grocery store? read more
