I keep going here and don't know why. Oh, well, I do. The corner market is small and Madison Market and others are further away. Little things always bug me about this location. Some big little, some not. They never seem to have Revive Vitamin Water, either in the juice/soda isle or in the "healthy" section. There vegetarian meats are spread between the "healthy" area and the regular freezer section, and they're almost always out of veg ground "beef". There's also no vegan cheese options, but I'll let that one slide. At night, the lines are usually absurdly long, which is totally inconvenient for grabbing a vitamin water on the walk home from the Twilight Exit. I'm sure if I still lived off of tater tots, pasta and spaghettios this place would be fine, but I expect some damn service and products out of my grocery stores these days. There's some sort of parking garage. I've never used it as my truck is over height but I can usually find a space in the spots before the garage at the 22nd Ave entrance. read more

This Safeway sucks. I'd say 50% of the time they overcharge me for something and I have to go wait in line at Customer Service to get my change. Last week, all the refrigerated cans of biscuits were about to expire or had already expired. Same with the cream cheese. I went to customer service to let them know and the lady looked at me like I was crazy. I just know some little old man is going to buy these biscuits and cream cheese and end up getting sick from... old biscuits and cream cheese. The layout of this store blows. The produce is kind of in the middle but not really, and the aisles at the other end of the store don't line up to each other. So you kind of have to go up and down and around the aisles a few times if you miss something. This store makes me miss the grocery stores of suburbia and I'm even contemplating trekking over to Albertsons in Mercer Island from now on. This review is based ONLY on the sweet Asian woman working in the bakery department. On a rainy evening I had walked over from my house in hopes of procuring a reasonably tasty baguette, only to find they were all sold out! I approached the bakery counter and asked the woman when their next batch would be thrown in, and she offered to put them in right then so I could have a baguette (even though I only wanted one!). She said "It's no big deal, I have to make them anyway, just walk around for a little bit and come back." So I wandered around for about 15 minutes grabbing a few other necessities and eventually made my way back to the bakery, right when the baker was pulling a full rack of baguettes out of the gigantic oven. She saw me right away, bagged a super fresh baguette, and handed it over to me with a huge smile. I'd never felt so cared for at a chain supermarket! So to the bakery department, kudos! Your staff (not just the asian woman) have always been pleasant and helpful. Keep it up, and I'll keep noshing on those baguettes (even if they are full of empty calories!) read more

This is the grocery store I go to most often because I live so close to it and for most things, they're just fine. The produce could have a better selection and better reflect the season, in my opinion. There are many better places to get higher quality and better prices on it than here. Their pharmacy staff are wonderful, and they'll get you anything, but you'll pay dearly for it if your insurance doesn't cover it. I had to get a special gel there and it was OTC and cost me twice what Ross-Kelley charged a month later. The service is great. They'll help you find anything if they have it. They are a small store, though, so selection can be hit or miss and a lot of things are seasonal. We can usually find most things we want, in spite of all that. I've always liked Safeway grocery stores. They might not be the fanciest store around, but they're generally pretty reliable for finding pantry staples and basics like vegetables and such. And then there's this Safeway. Maybe it's just smaller than the Safeway stores I'm used to. Maybe it's because I go there more often than anywhere else (super convenient to the boy's place). But really? They fail. - Terrible produce section - check out the moldy strawberries and giant asparagus. - The meat and seafood counters seem to close earlier than average, but it's highly doubtful that anything there is fresh anyway, so maybe they're doing us all a favor. - Extremely limited selection on stuff that I consider basic staples like corn meal, lentils, and split peas. Really, Safeway? Only one sort of lentil on the shelf? - Unwillingness/inability to keep certain things on the shelf. Their restocking habits are terrible, especially in the yogurt section. - Ultimate example of how terrible foods stuffed with HFCS get prominent supermarket real estate while other, healthier foods are ignored and/or outcast to bottom shelves where shoppers have to search for them. Again, just looking at the crappy produce here, how is that supposed to inspire someone to eat fresh fruit instead of Fruity Pebbles? Meh. Not that any of the above keeps me from shopping here instead of walking the two blocks to Trader Joes. Convenient is convenient, and it doesn't get much more convenient than walking downstairs to go grocery shopping. read more

I go to this Safeway most days for lunch, not anymore. I tried to purchase my lunch today with an e-gift card loaded on my phone. I have used this payment method on several of my previous visits without issue. After having to wait in a long checkout line (can't use gift card at self checkout) was told they won't take my gift card and that i would need to go wait in another line at customer service. The checker was rude and unhelpful. DON'T SELL GIFT CARD IF YOU WONT ACCEPT THEM. read more

So this particular store is not exactly in the best neighborhood and you are bound to look over your shoulder if you go after dark. That being said they have a decent, well lit parking lot and underground garage and it is hands down one of the largest, newest, and better Safeway's in the city. As a lifestyle store, they offer a pretty good selection of grocery items and you are bound to be able to get everything you need to make Thanksgiving dinner. The staff can be hit or miss, but you are bound to be able to follow the store layout and get what you need. The lines at the checkstand can get long and often times I wish they had the self-checkout like QFC, but oh well! read more

It's a national chain grocery store, we all have been to them. not too much to say. positives: good selection and pretty clean. This has been my neighborhood grocery store for the past 5 1/2 years since I moved to the area. One thing that sets this particular location apart from many other places is their level of service. I can say they have the friendliest and most helpful employees of anywhere else I've shopped in Seattle. I am almost always greeted with a smile, and asked if I need any help finding something. The few times I have asked for help, I've had the employees drop whatever they were doing to help me look for something. I've had them offer to open up packages to sample a product, or special order something that they didn't carry. As for quality and selection, I think it is decent for their size of store. Produce is above average and they have a decent selection of organic fruits and veggies. The one area I really wish they would improve is the deli counter. It is almost always difficult to get someone's attention to help me get fresh sliced meats and cheeses, and I can often see them working in the back, but they often don't notice someone waiting at the counter. I have resorted to just choosing whatever is already packaged in the refrigerated section or skipping this section altogether. It's improved slightly over the past few months, but this is still my one gripe. Overall, I'm very happy shopping here. read more

Since I live across from this Safeway, I've been going there for months. The staff is generally friendly (unless it's busy, then they kind of act like they hate you). For a neighborhood market, I think they have a really good selection. They have a gluten-free section, but the downfall is that once you get attached to them having a certain item, they usually stop selling it. Seriously, bring back the GF bread guys. Other than that, it's clean and they have enough checkers to handle the customer load. The bad is that if you don't know the layout of the store, it is the MOST unintuitive layout of a store ever. Also, as others have said, most of the Starbucks baristas are slow, so don't go there if you're in a hurry. Oh, and what kind of grocery store doesn't carry Borax? read more

Safeways in general have an ongoing issue about sale prices and checkout ACCURACY. Today was a new high: three out of three items were incorrectly priced at checkout, all of course HIGHER than they were advertised! After I've already jumped through ridiculous hoops like 'loading' these specials on my Safeway card, still they're WRONG. I spend more time having the prices corrected in Customer Service than I do BUYING the food. And only once in the dozens of times I've had to do that has the employee bothered to APOLOGIZE for it. Most of the employees, however, are quite pleasant. Love the butcher shop staff at this store, but WATCH Safeway's checkout prices like a hawk! read more

I've been frequenting this particular Safeway for 5-10 years. It's always been ok. But today, I was rudely accosted by the self-checkout person. I was purchasing a bottle of wine with a friend of mine, who is obviously older than 21. The checkout person requested my friends ID. In small talk, between the two of us, I mentioned that Washington state law only requires the person purchasing alcohol to be of legal age. The checker was apparently very offended by this, and was quite verbal about it. I ignored them, as I was not talking to them within the conversation. I continued on mentioning that I might just take my business elsewhere so I don't get berated for knowing the law. "It's company policy" they said. "Go ahead and try it, good luck with that" they continued. Still I ignored the checker. I believe this made them even more mad. I just wanted to get out of there. They kept going on and on, but I was paying little attention, as I was merely conversing with my friend. So you're telling me that it's store policy to not sell a woman a bottle of wine if she's grocery shopping with her kids in tow? You're telling me that two 70 year old men couldn't purchase a bottle of scotch if one of them didn't bring their ID with them? Pssshhh. read more

I'm not judging this Safeway on the whole (there's no way they'd get four stars for that), I'm just judging their sandwiches, since I go there a lot for lunch. There are plenty of sandwich places around, but I think people forget that Safeway has a very good sandwich bar. It's way better than Subway, and it's all made to order as you would expect. Decent prices too. i'd recommend the grilled turkey and havarti. It's an amazing sandwich, and while the service may be slow, it never fails to put a smile on my face because of its buttery goodness. Again, this is just about the sandwich. I can overlook the long lines, slow service and everything else for that. Try them out if you haven't. read more

What gives with their stinky fish? I've spoke with their fish processor behind the counter. She said if it's smells bring it back. I asked why sell it, no answer. Last night was wild halibut, last week wild caught salmon. The pack date mean nothing how long has it been sitting around before being packed? This has been going on for years I'd say about 50% of the time it smells bad but never gotten sick yet, thankfully. They are $6 for a bakers dozen and I have not found tastier bagels in Seattle, but ONLY when one particular baker is in shift, and when the oven steam is working. Thank you to the master baker at this specific location who delivers delicious bagels, and thank you to the friendly staff who stock shelves in the morning. I'm going to write the word 'bagel' a few more times to try and encourage Yelp to pick the keyword up so it will display Safeway as an option for people who plaintively seek tasty bagels in the taste wasteland that is occupied by Seattle's other bagel bakeries. This is a terrific neighborhood grocery store. The cashiers are friendly and remember who you are. Many times they even open a lane to help out and often stop in an aisle to offer help and direction. The pharmacists are wonderful - it feels like a small hometown pharmacy. Enrico feels like your best friend who knows a ton about wine and adult beverages - he's wonderful. If I had a complaint it would be the loss of a bank - I know it's been gone for YEARS but I'm still sad about it. read more

This store is remarkable. 40 years of shopping and I never knew anyone's name, let alone wrote a review of a supermarket. The difference here is the staff. Professional, friendly and fast. Special mention to Miss Renee, Nichole and Enrico! Putting this crew together couldn't be an accident, it was not, and I recently discovered how it happened. On a particularly busy day, lots of people, everybody was busy and moving fast, I saw something out of place. In the middle of the rush there was an older gentleman down on the ground, reloading the grocery bags. It was the manager. This Safeway is NOT in the CD (Central District) it is in Madison Park. The Good: 1. It has its own parking garage with plenty of ample parking that is free. 2. Its Safeway, great deals to be had. Easy to find meats that are marked down as they are close to their "sell by" date. 3. The staff is nice and quite helpful. (I didn't use self-checkout) 4. Large selection of organic fruit and vegetables 5. Produce section is nicely organized (broken down by, grilling vegetables, salad vegetables, etc.) Very nice touch. 6. I cautiously bought some pre-seasoned chicken wings and pork for the grill. They were affordable and delicious. The Bad: 1. The meat section has an odd layout. I felt like a moron wandering around in a circle trying to find some delicious bacon. But then it dawned on me everything is neatly divided by meaty categories. 2. The Shopping Carts... while they are large, its the oddest thing in the world that the shopping carts have no bottom rack. You know, when you want to like say buy a ginormous bag of dog food and store it under the cart. These carts don't have that. I was having a barbecue for Labor Day and bought a lot of beverages, which took up most of my cart. Yeah, I know... boo hoo I couldn't get all my groceries in my cart, but still, that bottom rack is handy. The Ugly: 1. The Deli. OMG.. its almost as if they see you coming and run away. While one woman was helping a lady, the other woman behind the counter and the man behind the counter walked away to the back food prep area as I approached. I stood patiently as they weren't prepping anything, they were just there. I eventually had to flag them down. I was happy to finally be helped, but quickly realized, I still had one helluva wait ahead of me. Not sure if the woman slicing the deli meat didn't know what she was doing, or maybe she was unfamiliar with turkey, but holy cow it took FOREVER. At one point I saw the woman considering giving me a bag of turkey that had already been cut and left near the slicer, she called another man over and they were examining the bag together. Like seriously deli lady? You're going to give me some turkey that's already been bagged just hanging around back there? I say to the woman as they examine the bag: "Can you please cut my turkey fresh". And she looks at me and says "yeah okay". All in all, I will of course return. As a Cap Hill resident that hates the QFC near me its great to know I can hop in my car and get to this Safeway, park and do all my grocery shopping, I'll just remember to make extra time if I need some freshly sliced turkey. read more

Occasionally I stop into this Safeway in the early mornings for odds and ends between the gym and work. I've got to say that the staff is super-friendly. At 7:30am, almost every staff member greets me, and most try to make sure that I can find what I'm looking for. Really, super nice. These are the things I know about: they have a good selection of liquid eggs and egg substitutes. They have a good selection of Field Roast Sausage and other non-meats. They have energy drinks (but not my favorite, Monster M-80). Because I don't shop here for my groceries, I can't account for a real shopping experience. But as a convenient stop on my route, it's pretty great. read more

Been coming here for two years and the recent remodel is nicer to look at for sure. People are complaining they rearranged all the aisles, which they did and that's honestly a poor choice. But as long as they don't do it again I can relearn the store. The quality of produce and meat does vary a bit, but it also depends on whether something is in season or not. Right now, you can get high quality King Salmon and yummy strawberries. Don't expect the same quality in April or October. In general the employees are pretty nice but I've had some issues with no one being around to help me at the sandwich counter and alcohol section; had to track someone down and they call for help, and no one comes by, even 10 minutes later.... This review is rambling, but the takeaway is: I'll get the basics here because it's way cheaper than anywhere else. I like their rewards program and it passes on savings for when I get fuel. read more

No, it hasn't really gotten better. I just feel bad about my one-star reviews of yore. In fact, it has kind of gotten WORSE, because they revamped the place and now even the MANAGERS have trouble finding things! Really, it's a horrifying re-design, aimed squarely at maximizing sales by forcing shoppers to TRUDGE wearily through EVERY AISLE to find what they need. What was already a mind-bogglingly stupid, senseless, irritating layout has gotten exponentially WORSE. On purpose. Oh - and they have locked up the liquor, so you have to track down whoever is on duty to unlock the cabinets, and it's a frightful pain. read more

I had my prescription transferred over to this pharmacy because I lived near by. The first time they didn't have the appropriate information transferred from my other pharmacy and made me come back. The next time they said they would make my refill automatic so i wouldn't have to call each time. Not so. When I came back they didn't even have the medication in stock and claimed to need a new prescription. The next day they called and told me I wasn't a patient of the doctor's office the prescription was from and couldn't get in contact with them. They called the wrong office. I called the number listed and got in touch with them immediately. And now I am 2 days late in taking my medication. The staff has been overall friendly and willing to help but there are some systemic issues at this pharmacy. I'll be transferring my prescription after I get this one sorted. read more

For all the bad reviews this Safeway has, I'd expected to show up to a disorganized store with all of the good things out of stock, no staff, little produce, little beer, and a tiny floor plan. As it turns out, people on Yelp like to exaggerate things. It's quite possible that the store used to be worse, but the store I visited had a decent beer selection, self-checkout and reasonable lines. I was able to find limes, despite the current shortage, and what looked like a completely ordinary Safeway. I walked, so I have no clue how terrible the parking might be, but the store itself was fine on a Sunday afternoon. read more

I've never had the slightest inclination to post a review of a grocery store, but the reviews being posted here are ridiculous. I almost didn't go here because the ratings were so mediocre. This perfectly nice Safeway bares no resemblance to the Kafka-esque hellscape described by so many people here. The criticisms I've seen revolve around a few issues: service, products, parking and store layout. Everyone I dealt with was perfectly polite and helpful. Every normal product you would expect is available and the produce is fresh and plentiful. If you have special dietary needs concerning gluten-free or vegan foods, this probably isn't your store. The parking garage totally fine. The layout was totally reasonable, not some corporate maze designed to squeeze maximum profit from customers. Everyone needs to take a deep breath and realize that this just is a regular Safeway. read more

This is the grocery store closest to me and I've been going here regularly for over 2 yrs now. The shopping trip this morning left me feeling it was time for a review, because: The employees here are extremely unprofessional. This morning it was the woman who was supposed to be supervising the self-check station, who was instead screaming across the store at every co-worker trying to see who left a very fake halloween spider on the self-check cash register. She kept scream-declaring that she refused to work until the coworker responsible for putting it there came and took it away. I was grocery shopping for about 30 mins, and this started before I arrived and continued through my departure, and she was true to her word - she didn't do a moment's work that entire time. Are you kidding me? Screaming through the store is unacceptable, and screaming that you are not going to do your job until someone else comes and throws away a stupid piece of plastic is, in my opinion, an immediately fire-able offense (if you are unwilling to do your job, you should not have a job). There was no recognition that customers were around and having to listen to this woman scream-investigate the fake-spider caper while she very conspicuously refused to do any work or help any customers. She did, however, find time to walk over to the Starbucks multiple times to snack on something she'd stowed behind the Starbucks counter. This is par for the course with this Safeway -- there doesn't seem to be any policy about employees being professional, speaking at an appropriate volume (employees screaming through the store is their standard), or doing their jobs. The service in the pre-prepared, sandwich, and deli/chicken counters is somehow worse - they're severely negligent and generally surly (75-80% of the time you're left standing there for several mins until someone walks by without looking over and you can call out to them that you're waiting to be served and no one else is around ((which is weird because they have a bunch of people working back there -- it's just that nobody who works here seems to do any work here). Outside of unprofessionalism/lack of service, there are regularly multiple self-check stands that are inoperable and generally only 1-2 lines open, so if you grocery shop in the evening, be prepared to spend 20+ mins waiting in line to check out. Their inventory is also quite poor, an issue that hasn't changed much over the time I've been shopping here. The store is oddly laid out, too. Also, I used to get soup here several times per week from the self-serve soup station and for over a year I've been asking, on a semi-monthly basis, when they are going to start stocking the clam chowder soup again (as lately it's been weird soups like Lime Chile), and their reply is always "oh we still stock that, we just ran out and need to order more". Then order more, you fools! You've received this question a dozen times and when that soup was stocked, it was the most popular one! I just don't understand the logic here, and the only rationale I can think of for why you wouldn't order this when a customer brings the lack of inventory to your attention, over and over, is lack of organization (i.e. the people I keep speaking to don't relay to the inventory manager) or utter laziness (the people I keep speaking to don't give a hoot what customers want and so don't do anything when this is brought to their attention). This Safeway, even for a Safeway, is pretty crappy. I might've given it an extra star for having a convenient Starbucks inside, but the Starbucks employees are as bad as the Safeway employees with the screaming back and forth. Will be spending the extra time to go the extra few mins up the road to Trader Joe's more frequently from now on -- I've never seen a shred of unprofessionalism from those employees. read more

I like their store, their selection, their prices (usually, some things vs. others of course) gets really crowded at times but people are friendly. They have nice produce, a great variety of wines and nice grab-and go dinner options like at their meat and seafood counter or deli. read more

Okay, so here is the deal. I have never once thought I would write a review about a grocery store but I can't help myself after the service I received today. I have been coming to this Safeway since I moved to Capitol Hill in December. Every time I come in I am greeted and everyone is always super friendly. Today was just over the top. I went in looking to buy champagne and schnapps to make this incredible drink I discovered as well as pick up other grocery items. I went to the alcohol section and asked a gentleman stocking the wine shelves for assistance getting alcohol out of the locked cabinets. He immediately jumped up and walked over to unlock the alcohol cupboard. I explained to him the drink I was looking to make and he was SOOO HELPFUL! I told him I had no idea about champagne as I am a red wine drinker. He helped me choose the perfect bottles with complete honestly, and filled me in on how to make the champagne last longer with a little trick he had learned. This man was so warm and inviting and I really enjoyed my conversation with him as well as learning a ton of new information about champagne and the best ways to drink it. I work in customer service and I am a General Manager for a large company, and his warm and inviting personality stood out to me beyond belief so I just couldn't help but write a review. . He did not have to educate me and explain everything in detail giving me tips and tricks. Most people would have just unlocked the cabinet, gave me my alcohol and I would have been on my way. His name was Enrico (I hope I spelled that right) Needless to say, after working in the industry of customer service for a very long time this was one of the best customer service experiences I have ever had, and that's saying a lot.
