This store feels very cramped. The aisles are extremely narrow and it just seems like there's just too much "stuff". That being said, they did have the specific variety of Playtex baby bottle that I was desperately looking for. Pretty random, so that's why I'm giving 3 instead of 2 stars. read more

Just moved to Fircrest about three months ago and started patronizing this Safeway. It was annoying in several ways, but I kept going because it is super close to my house. After my last trip, I am done. Fred Meyer is getting my business in the future. On the last trip, I had a few items in my cart already and needed some vanilla extract. Strangely, there was a sign in the baking aisle that the vanilla is kept in customer service. What?? When I got to customer service, I asked why it was there and the clerk said, "That's just where we keep it." Okaaay. But now, after standing in line at the customer service desk for my vanilla (two customers ahead of me), I have to go through the regular checkout (again standing in a slooooow moving line) to pay for my groceries. Why should I have to stand in line twice?? To top it off, when I got home and placed my bags on the floor of the kitchen, I noticed a horrible odor. Turns out it was the shrimp I bought, past its pull date. My husband then had to make a beeline for Fred Meyer because I needed the shrimp for dinner. Other miscellaneous issues with this particular Safeway: super slow checkout, very few lines open (this seems to be a common complaint on Yelp); limited inventory due to small size of store; only about 4 small carts which are never available. Convenience packages of fresh fruit and vegetables are almost always on their last day of freshness and no discount for them. read more

Always lines at the checkouts. No matter what time, day or night. They simply never schedule enough cashiers. You can be here at midnight and have lines. Not acceptable, especially when everything is expensive. read more

If 0 stars was a possibility, I would choose that option over a 1 star. This is just a warning for all those who plan to order from the bakery department of this store to have a backup plan at the back of your head while you order a cake. I ordered a cake for my son's 4th Birthday Party, and they failed to make it. I showed up to pick it up at the designated time and nobody that was present could find it. They called 2 managers in the store to come help find it. The invoice for the cake was there, but there was no cake. I was livid, but I was not rude. I calmly said that this was unacceptable and that it would be the last time I ordered anything from them. I live a block away from this store and because of that experience (coupled with the fact that everything in the store is expensive), I am thinking of boycotting the whole store altogether. The bakery has the best enery bars. They are always so fresh. Great customer service too! The meat dept is great too with nice selection of family size meat packages. The butcher will cut the meat exactly how you want it. I shop here for meat and their fresh baked goods. They are the best in University Place! read more

I ordered some fried rice and fried chicken. The chicken was full of salt and the rice was a heart attack in a box. They put a tone of oil to moisture the rice. Awful and very upset because they used to cook better. Not going back to buy any meals. read more

Like any big store, there are nice people who work there and the less-than-friendly people. I have mostly experienced the latter at this Safeway. They almost always have what I need - but for a price. I am very grateful that I am able to shop at the commissary where prices are WAY lower. read more

I like that they're super convenient and close to where I live, but I really dislike that they don't have a self checkout or at least more check out lanes open during busy times. There have been countless times that I've had to wait 10-15 minutes for three items, crazy! This place is so conveniently located I keep stopping in to give them a chance. I eat mainly fresh food (fresh fruits/veggies/meats) and when I can't buy any produce because all the displayed items are ROTTEN I think we've got an issue. I attempted to purchase tomatoes from this location, I checked out a couple of them and they were covered in mold. I passed on the lettuce because it was starting to turn black and slimy. I got the few pre-packaged items on my list and headed for the checkout. They never have enough checkers available and the checkout is worse than Walmart! Save yourself a headache and head to Fred Meyers or Trader Joes. read more

One of the checkers named Summer T. is very condescending and rude. My experience with her last night is cause for me to take my business to another grocery store. She did not bag part of my groceries and expected me to juggle them out of the store without a bag. In addition to this, when the screen at checkout asked if I wanted cash back, and I missed it, she said in a very loud tone "Cash back? Yes or no, very simple question. Not my responsibility! Duh!" And then she ignored me and chatted with her friends who were in line behind me. This was not the first time I have been treated this way by her. Poor customer service by Summer. I spent over $10,000.00 a year at that store but I will never go back. Summer needs to be fired today. read more

Ugh, their deli food is garbage!! The last three times their Shanghai special has been especially dry along with the egg rolls. I've ordered their orange chicken & it USED to be as good as Panda express, now they just push their dry ass drenched in orange sauce non breaded chicken & same w/the general Tsao. The rice no longer has egg & the peas/carrots are non existent! The "chow mein" noodles? Pasta fried w/cabbage. Bad experience with the casher name Nick totally have no patience, I was doing a WU transaction there, waited over 30 minutes, I didn't know what was wrong with my transaction, he called on a phone also served other customers, but he never speak a word to me to let me know what's going on, I just waited and waited for over half hour, finally he came to me and told me, they can't figure out what's wrong, so he had to return my money, with his attitude, he did not even said sorry, for all the time I been waiting there, then I asked him for a WU phone no. I called them by myself and their customer service was good, told me sorry for the convenience and gave me a promotion code. So, this is a sad review because I love Safeway but, don't like what it has become. I've been shopping Safeway for several decades and have always enjoyed the quality and customer service. When I was a teen I even worked for Safeway and had an amazing experience learning customer service and how to go the extra mile. Times have changed. This store is busy. Great! You would think that they would have payroll to employ enough cashiers. Not. Only 2 or 3 cashiers at a busy time. They have to call and call over and over for someone to help cashier. Linda the manager is very slow to respond as well as Jeff a supervisor. Jeff can be seen talking with a cashier as a long line is forming and he has no sense of urgency or care other then his conversation. I have contacted the Safeway corporate office and never heard back from the district manager...maybe this is why the store is this way. read more

I had a really humiliating experience at this Safeway yesterday afternnoon. I'm 7 months pregnant and was buying $90 worth of groceries and trying to use my WIC check for a few of those items including lactose milk. I've used the WIC checks to buy lactaid milk before and never had an issue... The checker informed me he couldn't accept them even though I showed him the book that says they are an 'approved' item. So the manager comes over and she says she'll check for me and call them. At that point I realize it's going to take awhile so I ask the checker to put a closed sign up or take my scanned items back so i'm not holding people up. He ignores me and lets the line build up and just stands there glaring at me. The manager comes back and says no dice but keeps insisting I switch my milk for regular milk which I have to keep explaining to her won't work as I cannot digest it. She won't make an exception etc. etc. I get that rules are rules but I've been spending thousands of dollars shopping at Safeway for the past 25 years and we're talking about $5 worth of milk... I feel like I was treated very poorly and with no empathy at all. Its not my choice to be only working part-time in this economy and I don't need to be treated like a 3rd class citizen. I could have done without the attitude and the glaring. I will not be returning to ANY safeway again ever after this experience. I've always been treated well at Top Foods and will be giving them my business from now on. I got home and realized have my produce was limp and bruised as well. read more

I'm giving it a 2 star because the staff is very friendly, but holy cow can you please do something about the check out lines?!!!!! Usually 2 lanes are open, and that's it. The store feels cramped and if you need to run in for one or two items, it will take you at least 20 minutes. I live right down the street and I will drive out of my way to another store just so I can avoid this place. 95% of my time is usually STANDING IN LINE!!!!!! Please fix this problem. read more

This place. Is always busy and long lines to checkout. It takes longer to checkout than it does to shop. Most of checkers are good but some are extremely slow. They seriously need to do some teaching to the baggers on how to bag. Cindy started to bag my bananas with the meat. The checker told her not to bag fruit with meat. She said ok then proceeded to put the celery and tomatoes with the packe of chicken. Hey at least fruit and meat didn't get mixed. I always put the items in an order for bagging. Cold. Canned produce etc. but never fail they will mix it up no rhyme or reason. Some bags they will put one or two items and others are so packed they rip. There is only a couple baggers who do a decent job. I always feel like I am being stalked by Cindy. No matter where I go she will be there asking me if I'm finding everything. It was 6 times she did this in one trip. I finally told her I have been shopping there longer than she has been there and leave me alone. I went to checkout and she left the one checker she was helping and came over and started bagging mine. The store is very cramped. They could get rid of some of the liquor and more space for food. Convenient but they are going down hill and am finding Fred Meyer isn't so bad. At least Fred Meyer teaches bagging 101. They have enough checkers. They don't have people that stalke you end constantly ask you if you need something. read more
