I looked through the menu and decided to get the 10 pcs nigiri for $29. I decided to treat myself. Took him a while to make the food, which was fine I was scrolling through my phone When I got my food it looked kinda sad - the rice is v dry and the fish looks ok. When I had my first bite the rice ultimately fell apart, the same w the rest of the nigiri's. The fish didn't taste fresh at all - le sigh. Went here with a group of friends for the first time and really liked the concept - it's cool being able to try different Asian dishes all in one spot! It was a bit of a wait for sushi since several other tables also ordered it, but totally understandable given there was only 1 person preparing the sushi. It didn't feel like a restaurant that I was expecting, it was more like a food snack shop which is fine. The food I ordered tasted fine nothing that would make me say I'm excited to order again. We ordered lion king and it was warm, not hot. It tastes more on the sweet side. What we really didn't like was as how all the rolls were primarily just rice. We understand the outter park is rice and no biggie there, it's the inner part we were most disappointed about. Enjoyed the Japanese bbq and the mixture of avocado and protein. Vibe is nice. Very hip and contemporary. The robot is fun. Would be nice to have a television from the lounge area or a mirror. Love the concept of this restaurant! SAGA Kitchen houses a handful of different Asian restaurants in their "food hall". (I quote food hall here because you'll order from all the different restaurants once vs going to different registers). You order on your phone via QR code, and items are delivered by a robot waiter! One Instagrammable choice was the Treasure Box, a handroll kit that came with nori sheets, wasabi, pickled ginger, and four ramekins of sushi rice topped with assorted raw fish including salmon, yellowtail, tuna, scallops, and uni. The quality of the fish wasn't particularly good, but the presentation was colorful and beautiful! My favorite dish was the Curry Rice, made of a thick Japanese curry sauce with onions, carrots, and pickles along with rice and tonkatsu, a perfectly crispy, panko-breaded fillet of pork. The curry had a sweet, savory, and distinctly fruity flavor, and the tonkatsu was meaty on the inside and nicely crispy on the outside, even when dunked into the curry sauce. While the katsu sandwich is one of my favorite things to ever, I have trouble with the discriminatory nature of the service. It seems to not be my personal experience that the people who work and own the business do not care for their customers unless they are white. My cousin and I sat and ordered plenty of food, while the waiters did not check in on us ONCE. Utensils and sauces are self serve. Found this place on tik tok and was drawn in by the variety of food options and aesthetics of the place, but I was pretty disappointed by the food. What we ordered: Crab Cream Croquette (3/5) - All I tasted was the cream filling and I couldn't taste the any crab in here at all. It wasn't bad, but I would prefer less cream and more crab. Chicken Karaage App (3/5) - You can't really go wrong with this dish but I wish it was a bit crunchier on the outside. Other than that, this is just your typical karaage. Shanghai Pan Fried Bun (1/5) - I was the most disappointed by this dish because it's one of my favorite dishes but also the worst pan fried bun I've ever had. I don't know if they even fried it because the whole bun was soft and there wasn't any soup inside. This was basically just your regular bun with some meat inside. Kurobuta Katsu Sando (5/5) - This was my favorite dish out of everything we ordered. The katsu was tender and the bread was nice and soft with slightly toasted edges. Also felt that the slaw and sauce paired very well together. If you're gonna order one item from here, order this! Treasure Box (3/5) - I liked how big the sashimi pieces were but the fish didn't taste that fresh to me. Not bad, but could be better. Special Kaisen Don (3/5) - Same as the treasure box, the fish was not bad, but I wish it was more fresh. Multiple cravings for different type of asian food? No problem, go to SAGA! I was meeting a friend here and it is rare for me to be in this area so why not pick a random spot to meet up and have lunch?! There is not private lot and only street parking. Nothing really too hard as residential parking is easy to find and a 1-2min walk from the restaurant. We arrive the time the place opens so there was hardly customers but there was still quite a few people going in and out. Outdoor seating also available but not for large groups. There is two sit down areas, one being the main spot and the one right next door. I wouldn't recommend a group more than 4 since the space inside didn't look like it had a big enough table for more than 4 people. You order through QR scans on the table. One QR scan per table which means your group cannot look at the menu or order separately. One tab per table. Doesn't look like there is an option to split pay. You can only pay on the app/QR scan. If you're paying with cash, you pay up front. The food is brought out by the robot servers. I am getting use to that. We ordered the dim sum set meal, treasure box, and one shrimp tempura roll. The dim sum set meal and treasure box is pretty solid. I highly recommend. The shrimp tempura roll wasn't as exciting. Since this place is more like a self service spot, sauces and utensils can be found next to the register. I had to ask for plates though. It's decorated so cutely and has a lot of Murakami art and some hypebeast art shown off, complete with some Supreme decals LOL. SAGA Kitchen basically houses food from like four different restaurants (if you can call it that?), so you can get sushi, dim sum, Japanese cafe-style food like curry and sandos, and ramen. Service was decent, considering we were the only ones inside. A robot server gives you your food too! The food itself wasn't bad; the soup dumplings (xiao long baos) had little inserts of red vinegar so you could squeeze it into the dumplings. The pork katsu sandwich had good-quality pork that wasn't chewy like your usual pork katsu. They describe themselves as a virtual Asian food hall, but for those that don't know that, the place is a little confusing. You can sit wherever and scan a QR code to order (and pay). Walk up to-go orders have to go to the right entrance where the extra seating is to place orders at the kiosk. They were decently busy between the dine-in and takeout orders so the food took 20ish minutes to come out. I got the salmon avocado roll which was tasty but a little chewy. The sake nigiri was a decent size, but was $5 for the one piece that was okay. Wish they would have given the tea in a mug instead of a paper cup; it makes sense with the food hall idea though I also wish they had some dessert or sweets! Definitely an area worth exploring. An interesting concept of dining in Alameda! We eat in Alameda a lot but mainly Park or Webster Ave. I was surprised to see a restaurant off the busy streets. In-person dining is available in their main restaurant or next door - there is plenty of seating. We are a family of four (with an infant) and ate in the next door dining room. I didn't think it was too cramped for a Wednesday evening. I think there were 2 other patrons there during that time. Menu options were interesting, as you can choose from different types of food. My favorite were the salted egg yolk buns! My daughter loved the kitsune udon as well. We returned on a Friday night for takeout and it was a seamless experience! Note - there are four menus to order from. Dine-In service - there is a QR code at each table where you'll order your food online and a robot will deliver your food. Food - The chicken gyoza was yummy but I wish it came with dipping sauce. The tonkatsu ramen was unfortunately luke warm and the noodles were very over cooked. The broth had good flavor but I'm sure it would have tasted better hot. The pork chasu was equal parts fat and meat. My brother got the spicy ramen and his was served hot. Ambiance - Loud hip hop music is played and the vibes are very chill. A laid back scene perfect for interacting with friends. The cloth chairs are really dirty and could use some upholstery treatment to steam them clean. Just something I couldn't help but notice when arriving. There's a small patio (6 tables) out front along the curbside, and a very nice and clean dining hall next door (which we chose). Our go-to when I need some Asian comfort food. It's got a bit of everything - Chinese dim sum, Japanese cafe food and noodle soups, and sushi. I appreciate the dim sum while my 2.5-year-old loves that as well as the cafe food. She'll say it's "So yummy!" while scarfing down the soboro don, haha. So it's always a good day when we have SAGA Kitchen for dinner. We usually do takeout since honestly, that's how I can actually access the miso soup if it comes with the meal. (There was one time I could not get the miso bowl top off and I gave up instead of getting help or burning myself, while eating with my toddler.) The service isn't terribly attentive especially if you're in the separate dining room, which works for people who'd rather be left alone when they eat. With a toddler, that's harder. The last time we were there, they were also playing explicit rap music, haha. Not a big deal to me personally, but something to note if you want to bring kids. I was very confused at first, but there are 4 different 'brands' or kitchens that serve different cuisine here: - Koharu = Japanese Katsu & Curry - Yue Club = dim sum - Sachi = sushi - Slurp Shop = ramen My S/O and I came for lunch, specifically for the sushi. Our Order: * Har Gow -- pretty good!! Would want to try their other dim sum. * Omakase Treasure Box -- good value (~$30)! The fish was good. The rice was a little vinegary. The included seaweed was stale. * Tiger Roll -- good * Miso Soup -- watery, don't get The weirdest thing about this place is the waitstaff/the layout of the restaurant. Is it half service? Is it full service? There was no one in the restaurant but the servers still went through the trouble to send the automated cat server to our table. They gave us water but we had to get our chopsticks (there a table with utensils and condiments in the middle of the restaurant). All sushi items was fresh and yummy. Dim sum set was good except for salted egg yolk bun. We got smear of egg yolk inside. Not enough fillings. What a disappointment, I was so hype to try it. Vendors include: SACHI SUSHI - sushi and omakase YUE CLUB - dim sum KOHARU - Japanese street food SLURP SHOP - ramen & udon What I got: - dim sum set meal {har gow, sui mai, salty egg yolk bun, shanghai pan fried buns, house xlb, tofu skin w/ shrimp} -- amongst the items, I really liked the Sui mai because of how big the shrimp was! Great quality and well made! The house xlb was good. Loved the tofu skin cause of the extra crispy tofu skin wrapped with shrimp paste! - kurobuta pork katsu sando -- this was so freaking yummy!! Love how crispy and trended the pork was! Perfect amount of sauce and the bread was not too mushy or soft. Loved every bite! - beef katsu sando -- also a very good sando! First time trying a beef katsu sando and it was well cooked and not dry. My mom loved both of the sandos! Overall, I would totally come back! Worth the drive! read more
