Stopped here on the way through town headed back to Tennessee. Saw the reviews online and decided to try it out. Really enjoyed everything we ordered. Fish and chips for my husband and they were a little greasy but delicious, and the collard greens and slaw were very good. The staff was friendly, but that is where it stopped. I went to the bathroom right after I got my drink as we had stopped in while traveling. The bathroom was just nasty. It smelled like years of uncleaned pee. It was dark and generally appeared dirty. There was also no soap or paper towels. I was ready to leave at that point. If they let areas that I can see look like that, what does the area where my food is prepared look like? When I got back to my table, I noticed the glass I was drinking my Dr. Pepper out of still had lipstick from the last person that used it. I left $10 on the table for the drinks and the server. Our friends invited us to Sage and Bar and Grill. It was quite a drive for us, but it was worth it. They have great happy hour specials. You have to try the pimento cheese fritters. Their dinner prices are also reasonable. I recommend the filet mignon with a loaded baked potato. read more

I went to Sage for the first time after mostly ordering their food online and decided to give the inside of the establishment a try. When we walked in, they had a live performance going on, and the patrons were having a wonderful time singing along and drinking; it was very loud too lol. There wasn't a hostess at the door so we were a little confused about where to go so we decided to sit at the bar (pictured here). It took a little bit of a while to get the bartenders attention but I'm assuming it was because they were pretty busy so no complaints there! I stopped in for lunch on Monday afternoon with some friends. The building was previously a barbecue restaurant and before that a catfish place. It has a rustic look and feel. The dining room is open and includes a bar and three pool tables. The ambience is very causal. We were seated promptly and our waitress was friendly. She was efficient in taking our orders and keeping our drinks filled. Our food came our pretty quickly. I ordered the Chicken Fried Chicken with Garlic Mashed Potatoes and Onion Rings. I thought my lunch was outstanding. The fried chicken breast was thick and cooked just right; tender and juicy. The batter was crispy and topped with a nice white gravy. The garlic mashed potatoes were a perfect complement. The onion rings were big and crunchy, not greasy at all. Details follow. Prompt. and courteous server seated us quickly, brought menus, and took drink orders. (Although I'm still confused about what they actually have on tap. And the server wasn't too sure either....so I grabbed a good old Yuengling.) Menu was pretty much basic pub grub. Food service was prompt and my burger was Excellent....fat, juicy, tasty. Wife's salad was onion-forward to a fault...and wings were not impressive. Bland. We could see that the Karoke music was fun for many of the folks in attendance - lots of hootin' and hollerin' and appropriate applause...but the audio level was so high, any other conversations were nearly impossible. Pool tables available .... if you spend a certain amount .... darts too. The handful of TVs had several sports on them, but were difficult to see, let alone hear....closed captioning would help. My soul is on a budget. I cannot afford stress, envy, negative vibes, doubt or deceit. Walk in to Sage and you won't be short of anything but goodness. Katie is a phenomenal owner, hostess, waitress, and overall exemplary human in the all too difficult world of hospitality. This was my first stop on a first trip to Birmingham and Katie left me with the best impression of southern hospitality. Plenty of parking and seating, our preference was the patio. Pretty chill vibe with plenty of TVs for football nights and pool tables to keep you from being bored. Lucky enough to have live music on a Thursday night and a perfect evening where the Truck Stop Honey brown ale was as cold as any air conditioning one could ask for on a typical Alabama humid summer night. We had several cocktails to quench our thirst and they kindly made me a killer very dirty martini. In order to not stumble out of the place, we did order the charcueterie board and XXX smoked wings. Portions are so generous and cook staff is quick with the orders. The BLT was amazing with pimento cheese and freid maters on top. Trust me, pretty delish and goes well with the Truck Stop Honey. If you rather go all out southern, the shrimp and grits were incredible. We also got the meatloaf and my girl friend couldn't stop gushing how it tasted so homemade with love and goodness. Katie surprised me with a dessert sampler that included the fried banana pudding and chocolate brownie with fresh crushed walnuts accompanied by ice cream. Food was really yummy. However the live music was to loud to talk to my family it was nice just needed to be turned down just a little. Our server was good. My biggest issue was the toddle running around the restaurant with no shoes on. Service at bar was good. Just stopped in for a late meal (no alcohol), but bartender seem to be attentive anyway. This is not always the case. I ordered meatloaf, and I'm pretty sure it was from yesterday. Warmed up, hard as a rock on the top. Couldn't cut it with the fork they gave me, they didn't give me a knife, so I had to use my pocket knife. I thought the guy sitting on the barstool next to me was going to fall off his stool laughing. And the karaoke was ear bleeding horrific. I'd say the ambience was definitely more bar than grill. My husband and I are so grateful this place exists. The food is good most of the time and reasonably priced. Drinks are kind of pricey but well made. Service is always friendly and attentive. They do have their bad moments but what business doesn't? There are pool tables but it doesn't deter from the family environment. They often hold community events, such as crawfish boils, which is amazing. They have karaoke on Tuesdays and live music on the weekends. We've always enjoyed the bands when we've been there for them. Definitely recommend. read more

This restaurant recently opened in the area about three months ago and has been busy every day since. Tonight was the perfect time to go without it being a large crowd. The current owners decorated the restaurant nicely and livened up the space. Our waitress (Tori) was absolutely fantastic. She provided excellent service and was very pleasant. My friend ordered the loaded potatoes as an appetizer. I ordered the peppercorn chicken with collard greens and macaroni and cheese. My friend ordered the 16 oz ribeye steak with macaroni and cheese and a baked potato. For dessert we ordered the turtle cheesecake. The portion sizes were plentiful and our food was the perfect temperature and taste. Both of us really enjoyed our meals and discussed how we would be back soon! read more

Sage is a welcome new business in Calera, as we don't have many options for dining there at this time. We had dinner there today, and had mixed reactions. The restaurant has a nice industrial/rustic feel with sage green walls I can only imagine are a nod to the name! The hostess sat us immediately, and our server came by quickly to get our drink order. We ordered a Pumpkin Spice White Russian to share just to try it, and it was gorgeous AND delicious. We started with an order of Pimento cheese fritters. They tasted very similar to fried Mac and cheese, and we were disappointed that there wasn't much pimento flavor coming through. So not bad, but not as good as we had hoped. He got the Jai Alai Burger and I ordered the Sexy BLT. His burger just tasted like your typical barbecue hamburger but he did say he wished the onions had been sautéed longer. My sandwich was....a lot. There was a lot going on. There was a TON of pimento cheese on it, which ended up overwhelming everything else. There was also a bunch of bacon, but it was really over cooked. I couldn't really taste the fried green tomatoes and the sandwich really needed that brightness to keep from being so heavy. I had the Mac and cheese on the side and it was delicious, but after my heavy app and sandwich I just couldn't finish it. He had the pickle fries on the side and these were SO good. I'd come back for just those! I do want to say our server was great. I can't remember her name, but she had blonde hair in a braid. She brought me a bit of the Mac and cheese to try before I ordered it to make sure I liked it and I appreciated that! All in all, not bad. Chicken salad wrap has no taste Waitresses are not present. Just comes out runs something to the table then disappears for a long time WHEN not busy. They had enough time in the back to cook the food as well but they have a cook. Sage was a local recommendation for good food and drinks specials during my recent work trip to Alabama And I was not disappointed. Sage provides a friendly welcome and ambience. Mike at the bar looked after me well and his food recommendations were spot on. Great local Pilsner and I would recommend the hamburger steak dinner. Was Happy to go back a second night too!! I travel quite a bit for work and Sage is one of my favorite finds. If I'm back in the area again I'm definitely going to pay another visit. Hearty recommendation from me!!! read more

I don't usually like fried green tomatoes but these turned me into a fan. Ashley was our very nice waitress that kept our tea filled. Sage has a lot of special beers and specialty drinks, however, I was driving. My brother had the lemon pepper wings and collard greens. Both were good. They did not have corn bread. I had the peppercorn basted chicken, baked potato with butter, butter butter and fried okra. A photo on Yelp shows a photo of the chicken with what looked like white pepper gravy. However, it is peppercorn ranch dressing. The chicken was very good. I hope this place succeeds because I would definitely stop here again! read more

First, Id like to say that i've been coming here for about a year now because of karaoke. It's one of the only bars that has karaoke that allows minors, and I have kids. So, that is a plus, and I think the only plus other than the wonderful staff. My family had been going there a while, and go every Tuesday for karaoke. Which, the DJ only gets paid $120 for being there for 4 hours. Yes, I've never run a restaurant, but I do know what is good. Most of their food is frozen and heated up (not very well), and most of their food is way overcooked. And their prices are absolutely insane for this terrible quality of food. They put shredded cheese on the fries and put it in the microwave. The only reason I continue to come here is because of my family. I love my family. I'll end with this, if we ever find a better place with karaoke, we'll definitely stop coming here. I can promise you that. read more

I have given this place shot after shot to be good and it just never does.. My first trip here, I came with a buddy and we just wanted wings and beer... Simple right? We get in around 3pm and there's maybe 5-6 people inside. We think we will get sat immediately, however, we stood at the front for a very uncomfortable amount of time. There was no "please seat yourself" sign so we waited. Finally after about 10 minutes waiting at the door, we said screw it and went to the bar and sat. Sitting at the bar, we looked for the bartender... nowhere to be found.. I finally flagged down a passing server and asked where they were. She said she would grab them and they'd be out shortly. 10 more minutes go by... no bartender... no water while we wait... no nothing so far.. annoyed and just about ready to call it quits, the guy pops out from the back looking like he just ran a marathon. He finally took our drink orders and then we got menus.. noticed more people coming in and waiting like we did. The server that we saw before yelled to them that the hostess was in the restroom and would be right there... in the restroom? For almost 30 minutes? I mean I get it, sometimes you just gotta go... but cmon now.. needless to say, we got the wings finally. Very small, dry, unappealing wings with sauce that wasn't great and then beer which was fine. The second trip was worse in that it not only took an act of congress to get sat (we had a group this time) but the beer I ordered had a film on top of it with 2 dead gnats floating in it. I notified the bartender and he poured me another and you guessed it.. same thing... I just stuck with water after that.. didn't go back for a LONG time after that.. just stopped in by myself the other day to see if anything had changed. I actually got seated in under 10 minutes which was nice but this may have been the worst one of all as the wings I ordered were undercooked to the point that the inside was pink and lukewarm. I notified the server and she took it away. I had lost my appetite by that point and asked for my check and to see about just getting refunded seeing as I only took a bite out of a wing. Thankfully I was refunded for this but I have given this place 3 chances to be good and it just hasn't been... maybe it's just my luck but I cannot get decent service or food at this place. read more

We ate at Sage Bar & Grill about a week or 2 ago. This is a great location right off the interstate (I-65). The ambience is family friendly bar if you can believe it. We went on a Mon night & they had karaoke starting @ like 6 pm & there was a dedicated group of people who come for the food & karaoke. They knew each other & were greeting each other as they came in. On to the food, my hubby had hot wings (flavor hot) & the a smoked then flash fried. They come 6 or 12 wings. Hubby said the wings were excellent, crispy w/good hot buffalo flavor. We split the loaded fries & the were like a steak fry w/there"beer cheese" (liquid cheese, very tasty) w/ crispy bacon & ranch dipping sauce. They were a little different than most bar loaded fries but very tasty. I had the chicken tenders appetizer & got 4 white meat chicken tender & the were fried perfectly w/a very tasty honey mustard dipping sauce. Price was around $35 for the whole meal,, which we felt was reasonable. Service was good as well w/a down home, everybody knows your name kind of atmosphere. read more
