Maybe I just ordered the wrong thing, but the Beet and Tomato Salad was WILDLY disappointing. Came here for a casual light lunch on the patio. The rustic log cabin restaurant was lovely and mountain view was picturesque. The staff seemed nice enough although perhaps stretched thin (on a very hot day on a sunny patio my water glass was left empty for far too long before any sort of service). Anyway, I ordered the Tomato and Beet salad which looked perfect for a light meal on a hot day. But for $17 I didn't expect it to be THAT light. It was literally 3 leaves of butter lettuce with maybe 5 cherry tomatoes and not even half a beet, and a tiny dollop of chevre. When it was put in front of me I was actually taken aback and a little confused at how pathetic it looked. It had a ramekin of dressing on the side (which was fortunately actually quite tasty) but was humorously way too much for the salad -- and I'm not one to skimp on salad dressing. The overall flavour of the salad was pretty good too. My boyfriend had a smoked trout sandwich that had a side salad that was almost twice the size of mine. I finished my "meal" in about 3 minutes and waited patiently for him to finish his and we left immediately so I could go munch on some snacks we had in the car. Perhaps if I had ordered anything else this review would look a lot different, and I might be inclined to come back to try something else if I'm in the area with some more menu research... but I just don't know how a restaurant could have overlooked a menu item so grossly. I might expect small portion sizes and high prices for something much fancier - but not bare lettuce, tomatoes and beets. read more

Let me first start with saying the atmosphere here is very nice and welcoming. Let me also say that the staff is friendly and does a good job of trying to make your experience enjoyable. Here's where they FAIL miserable, the food has ZERO FLAVOR! I ordered the French onion soup which was made with chicken broth, terrible. I also ordered the lamb burger and it was a frozen patty cooked on a George Forman grill, ZERO FLAVOR! I wanted to give this place a good review but there is no way in hell I would ever recommend this place to anyone ever even if my meal was free. Giving 2 stars due to the ambiance and nice staff. The food though? 0 stars. I ordered the french onion soup in which was made with chicken broth, and was flavorless. I had to add salt and pepper and I don't even use salt typically. From there I ordered the turkey wrap. Again, flavorless. The berry aioli was watery, runny and the turkey had a gamey taste. The food was was excellent. What is lacking for a five star restaurant is service with extra's . First of all charging a dollar for bread per person is ridiculous ( 2 small slices of Italian bread) is uncalled for. Second, we ordered a salad to share for an appetizer, we received a large bowl of salad for both of use to eat out of, you would think that giving us plates to use would be appropriate. We needed to ask for pepper for our salad since we didn't even have any on our table. The chief did his job, but service department needs some work to make this a five star rating restaurant. read more

We saw this place when driving by and thought we would give it a shot. I am so happy we did! The restaurant was incredibly unique- offering two completely different menus between their upstairs and downstairs. The downstairs offered full plated dinners and the menu looked delicious. The upstairs was tapas dishes and so we decided to head upstairs. The service was excellent and every dish was excellent and very tasty. Definitely try the smoked trout and bison tartar. Just had brunch at this little gem of a restaurant. The food was fresh and nutritionally rich. Farm fresh eggs with brilliantly coloured yokes, thin sliced red potatoe hash, chicken sausage garnished with fresh fruit and a nutrient rich smoothy shot. Delicious! Not to be missed! We stopped for a quick bite before heading home, and stayed the afternoon drinking delicious chilled wine on the patio. The food was excellent - the mac and cheese is worth a try. Our prime rib was cooked perfect, veggies and mash beautiful! Wonderful atmosphere sitting inside a log cabin.

Originally found Sage through Canmore's Dining Guide and found the advert and sample menu to be quite attractive, however when we got there it seemed like the guide was very much out of date. While the bistro has a nice location and beautiful view, the interior is a bit drab and dated. We found that the menu was completely different from what we had expected and it was difficult for the four of us to find something that appealed to our tastes, and it's not like we're exceptionally picky. Specific to the food, the Venison Meatloaf was rather bland and overshadowed by a tiny portion of superb homestyle Macaroni and Cheese. The Thai Chicken Curry was a bit on the weak side with no attention paid to presentation. While I do like the idea of fresh local greens included with each dish, they were soggy and hidden underneath the main dish. For the level of quality given the price is too high, but hopefully the management will reform the menu and kitchen soon as the dining room was quite emtpy for it being a Saturday night. read more

Great spot, cool building, good service - and there it ends! The menu is "strange", some of the food (PEI Mussels for one) not very good, and the prices are RIDICULOUS! Our meal which primarily consisted of app's was $400 (4 people) and they even charged us $9 for oil and vinegar to dip our bread. There are some GREAT restaurants in Canmore. Sage Bistro at 1712 Bow Valley Trail is a casual restaurant serving brunch, lunch and dinner. It's an indoor restaurant and not noisy. They have an upstairs wine lounge and tapas restaurant and some patio dining. Nice contemporary presentations, not fancy, good portions, and good service. Entrees range $25-30 My wife and I had dinner at the Sage Bistro and enjoyed it. We had reservations and were seated immediately. Our service was prompt and friendly. My wife ordered a pinot gris and I had a beer. My wife ordered the onion soup which was disappointing, very strong flavored and finished under the broiler which overcooked the cheese. My wife ordered the yellow curry and I had the BC steelhead, medium rare. Both entrees came as ordered accompanied by fresh vegetables and were delicious. Having had salmon on this trip that was ordered medium rare but served well done and dry, I was very pleased with the chef at Sage. We shared a chocolate decadence for dessert which was very good and topped off the evening. Nice presentations, and good portions. Service was very friendly and prompt. Our overall experience was very good. With wine, beer, soup, dessert, tax and tip our dinner expense was $129. read more

Sage is by far my favorite resturant in Canmore. The food is so good you won't care how much it costs. The upper floor is this beautiful wine lounge, which I would suggest going to instead of the restaurant, as there is a great view and wonderful decor/atmosphere. Check it out! read more

I came here with friends on summer vacation in the Banff/Canmore area and we had dinner here on a quiet Monday night after a long hike. Our meals were delicious! I liked the wine selection and the two young people with us loved the bucatini pasta and we all loved dessert. My friend had a great cocktail and the salad was excellent as well. We ate here twice and had night and day experience. We had the anti pasto platter and drinks the first night the service was attentive and food was great. After such a great experience we went back and got the worst service I have had in years. Our friend asked of a soup sample as she was not sure of pumpkin and currie. The server said no. That tells me the soup is frozen and thawed based on serving size. I ordered the truffle popcorn it came cold which means old. One of the 4 of us waited almost 10 minutes after the rest of us received our appies to get his 3 pieces of bruschetta. Pretty sure we won't return. read more

We're new residents to Canmore and are wanting to review and try all there is to offer in dining here. Sage was advertising a 3 course dinner so we thought this would be a good choice for the evening and a great example of what Sage had to offer. Of the 4 different meals we tried only "one" was worth the price and quality they are trying to attract to their establishment. Three meals out of 4 very poor quality, pulled pork Mac and cheese with one small piece of pork , cheese dry and missing any elegance. Lamb meatballs lacking any kind of accent herbs and flavour, it would have been great to have something to dip them in? And the risotto, we thought that they just ran out and we were given the last of the pot , more like a appetizer portion and lacking any robust flavour. Then there was the beef bourguignon, this is usually a family favourite that we eat at home on a cold winter day, here the beef was dry and over done just not at all restaurant quality. It was suggested we go upstairs to try their tapas fair but we thought that the downstairs dining would give us a better idea as to the quality of the restaurant, or is it the upstairs that has better food? Well for now it'll be a while before we consider going back. Oh and by the way I would like to mention the service was excellent unlike the food.
