Following Supertramp's advice, we took the long way home over/through the Bay Bridge-Tunnel. This allowed me to spy the Sage Diner for a mid-morning breakfast. We were seated promptly in a clean and inviting restaurant, our waitress served up our coffees in no time. Nice menu selection with specials also available. The sweet potato waffles are excellent and even though it wasn't on the menu, the cook had no trouble making my wife's "normal"... scrambled eggs, home fries and onions all mixed together. First of all, this restaurant is one of the best I've ever been to. When you first enter the diner, you'll notice the atmosphere and a clean looking restaurant. The staff are nice, and you're served in a timely manner. Prices are also very acceptable for the big portions. I'll also put out there that the cornbread they give you to start is amazing. It's fresh, and may just be the best cornbread I have ever had. I ordered the burger steak with brown gravy. The steak had too many onions for my liking, but that isn't the diner's fault. The mashed potatoes were warm and tasty, but the rice pilaf I ordered was a little cold. I don't blame them, as all of our food came out together. The rest of the food my family ordered was also delicious, according to them. If you're going to get a soup, I must recommend the Cream Of Crab, as it's very delicious! Passing through on our way to North Carolina we stopped for breakfast. The food was excellent, the staff was so friendly and kind, and prices are very reasonable. The restaurant and the bathrooms are kept very clean, but are certainly old. All in all it was a very good experience. read more

We were on a long road trip and on the way to the Bay Bridge Tunnel. We stopped in for breakfast and it was great! We got pancakes and sausage, an omelette, and eggs benedict. Don't bother. No wonder all the other Sage Diners on the Shore have closed. Stopped here around 7:25 PM on a Wednesday night on my way back to Va. Beach, the waitress sat me down immediately and put a menu on my table. I sat there for 15 minutes and not one person stopped to ask about my order or even to take my drink order. I decided to walk out and as I was getting up, the hostess who was guiding two customers to a nearby table asked if I had been helped then she says: I am sorry, the waitress who sat you left and didn't tell anyone. The hostess did see me come in and two wait staff members cleaned the table next to me while I was sitting there. So, I can't comment on food since I didn't get any, I guess they don't need the business. Will never go back and I do go by this place at least every other week. read more

Why 5? Great food! Great Service! Great Price and Clean! Stopped at the Sage Diner for Breakfast on our way to the Outer Banks. Ample parking for our motorhome. Easy on-off, right on Rt. 13. Immediately greeted by Steve. Couldn't be friendlier. He was also our server. Perfect! So nice to give your order once, didn't have to repeat at all. Order came out "hot" and correct. My husband had a Waffle and Sausage. Delicious! I had the Poached Eggs on a Muffin with Swiss Cheese and a slice of Tomato. Never had that before? It was absolutely yummy! It came with Home Fries. They were also yummy! Hefty serving. The atmosphere in the diner was inviting. Everyone seemed happy, friendly and everyone was helping each other. The cost? I love this little diner! The staff is very welcoming and friendly. I had the Belgian waffle and it was very light and airy, not like the thick, heavy waffles I've had at IHOP. The bacon was tasty as were their sausage links. We were visiting from Yorktown and wanted to get an early start on our day. I liked the fact that they opened at 6 am so we could get breakfast out of the way early. The prices were very reasonable as we were trying to budget our vacation spending. I have lived in the area for over 10 years, and nothing beats this place for all the things you'd want from a diner. This cute little out of the way restaurant features a wide menu. They serve breakfast all day and lunch and dinner. I ordered crab cakes, mash potatoes and gravy plus turnip greens. To my surprise the crab cakes were not only huge but cooked perfectly. The mash potatoes were good but the gravy was a little thick for my taste. The turnip greens came out of a can which was surprising because of all the farms nearby. The cleanliness of this establishment was impressive. However, the best part of my visit was my waiter. Like most people we stopped mid roadtrip on our way to somewhere else and had no idea about the excellent reviews. Seating even at 6pm on a Saturday was a breeze as shockingly the diner was barely half full. The children both opted for the spaghetti & meatballs and the quantity was large. We've been coming down to the shore for 25 years, but never went to the Sage until yesterday. The service was wonderful and everyone was very friendly. The food was your typical comforting diner food and very good! I had turkey and mashed potatoes and soup. The mashed potatoes are homemade and so are their soups. my daughter had a turkey burger and fries, She was very happy. Very convenient location for travelers and good prices. This place has always been a must stop on our way home from up north. Until today. We have erased it from our fav spot, and are currently looking for a new one as I write this. Service and quality have gone down each time we stop, and tonight was enough. We came in about 20 minutes until close. We were greeted rudely, told we could still be served, then were told to hold on a second while the waitstaff asked someone in the back if it was okay. Whoever that was peeped around the corner to look at us, and that was that. We stood waiting for a few, but decided just to leave. Not worth it. Truly an option for everybody. Even low calorie choices. Once we had decided what we wanted to eat, our server Terri came to take our order. She was an expert conversationalist, and quite possibly the nicest human being alive. She gave us wonderful sightseeing recommendations and even shared a few stories of her own. I honestly have to give a very mixed review for this diner. First and foremost the place was filthy. The dirty floor in the entryway should have turned us around but we continued in. We asked to be reseated because of the number of flies in the main dining room. The floors were filthy with a poor overworked woman trying to vacuum with a worthless vacuum while she waited in people. There were three waitresses and at least four grown men doing nothing much more than waiting to seat people and then for the ticket to be paid. There were two other men clearing tables. The waitresses were phenomenal they were cheerful and ours gave extremely good service and attention even as she had to rush around. Our meals were just okay. The menu was too large for a restaurant to be able to serve fresh foods. The shrimp was frozen and undercooked. The steak tough. While waiting for our check I used the most disgusting restroom I have been in. My shoes stuck to the floor the entire time and I had to step over a sign laying on the floor to keep the entryway open. Upon my return to the table the check had not arrived. I went to the counter to pay and the useless man standing there asked which waitress. She promptly came from the back with a huge tray of food for another diner. She apologized as she went past me. I asked useless man for a cup of hot water to go. He mumbled something and went back to shuffling the paid tickets next to the cash register. I went over to the waitress that was figuring up our ticket at the time and asked her for the hot cup of water because it may have been above useless mans pay grade to get hot water for customers while the waitresses are running their tails off.
