Was not so impressed. I love mom & pop places so was looking forward to checking this out. When I walked in I didn't mind the outdated decor as long as the food was good. Being a diner I went with a good ole home cooked breakfast (served all day). My food must have been cooked before the rest of my table's as my eggs came out cold and there's not much worse than cold runny eggs. I was disappointed by what is listed as "home fries" as I was really looking forward to cut Potatoes fried to a crisp. What I got was a disorganized pile of hash browns on my plate, with clumps of burnt potatoes and undercooked potatoes all mixed together with no seasoning/flavor at all. The service was nothing to write home about either. I was constantly smiling and saying thank you to see if she would loosen up some, but she kept her tough exterior and continued with her short quick answers. read more

We stopped here for lunch on a 13 hour trip from the OBX and were extremely happy. It looks plain on the outside but the service was super fast and the proportions were very generous. The chicken souvlaki was so fresh and the Greek salad dressing was light and delicious. The turkey club was delicious with generous serving of turkey breast, fresh lettuce and light on the mayo on perfectly toasted rye. Even the coffee was perfect! The best part was three meals with soup included, unlimited coffee , and rice pudding was only 26 bucks! Do not underestimate this place by it's plain outside facade. This place has okay food, and my server provided prompt and courteous service. My server did, however mess up my carry out order. I ate in the restaurant and ordered 10 barbecue wings to go. When I got home (across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel), I learned that my carry out meal was liver and mashed potatoes instead of wings. I detest liver - I detest detest detest liver. The restaurant is about 60 miles from where I am now, and I would have to pay $26 in tolls to go back there. I had my receipt, so I called the restaurant. I offered to send them a photograph of what I received. The woman who answered the phone asked who my server was. I have no idea, other than WF maybe mid 30s. Luckily for me, the receipt indicated I had server ID number 21. She informed me that they did me no good at all because they use the same ID number for everybody - I had to be able to ID my server. I told her I could indicate what time I was there and my transaction number from their receipt. Didn't matter. I'm not getting a refund. I asked to speak with the manager, and the woman said she was the manager. Next time I travel across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel I go to the Eastern shore I'm supposed to go by that restaurant and say hey I'm the lady who didn't get her wings - and she'll give me a set of wings. Seriously poor customer service. It is not my fault that their receipts provide useless information to them. It is my not my fault I cannot ID My server. It is not my fault this restaurant doesn't take the step to actually use the server ID numbers that the receipts provided for. I particularly appreciated her "I have no F's left to give" tone of voice. Her reaction was pretty much I can't help you if you can't identify the transaction or server. The receipt I have provides a server ID number, a reference number, and a transaction ID. Apparently the receipts just spit out fake information because they can't be bothered keeping their stuff up to date. I know it's only about $10, but I've never had such poor service when someone messed up my order and I have a receipt. I offered to take a photograph of the food and send it to them. Anyhow their food is OK (but it's nothing special) - but the customer service sucks. So I won't be back. read more

Stopped here in the midst of a ten hour drive from the Outer Banks back to New Jersey. The menu is gigantic, literally hundreds of options. I debated getting an appetizer and am glad I didn't given the size of the Philly cheesesteak I got. First let me say a meal on the road that doesn't kill you is a successful one. Success! I wish I could give this place 3 stars for the charming waitress, being from Boston it was nice to experience a bit of sincere hospitality. However.... The Sage diner has several locations in this area we ate at the one in Exmore near the Best Western. Being Boston centric snobs we didn't expect a Greek style diner in what we would call the middle of nowhere. But there it was the six page one thousand item Greek menu. I ordered a special, fried flounder and shrimp, my wife ordered a lump crab casserole, the sister in law ordered a crab cake on a serving of macaroni and cheese. Our meal came with a serving of corn bread ( yum, less sweet then in the north) and soup chicken bow tie noodle. We tried a couple of pieces of pie, apple and lemon meringue First lets get to the hits, the flounder was one of the best pieces of fish I have had, lightly breaded and wonderfully fresh, shrimp were also very good, the macaroni and cheese was well worth ordering, oh and again the corn bread was good. And now the flaws. The soup tasted as if it was straight from a bullion cube no real attempt to mask that nasty Lipton cup of soup taste My wife's crab casserole lacked the tender sweetness of fresh crab, it was rubbery and drowning in straight butter. The crab cake was bready and my sister in law didn't finish it so I new it was not good. Most disappointing was the pies, the apple pie was stone cold and the crust was pasty I flipped the crust and ate the filling which was straight from a can and mediocre. The lemon meringue was also a big disappointment the lemon filling was grainy and curdled with an odd lemon like flavor the meringue was almost undercooked or some kind of non-cook product. The story of how the Sage Diner landed me in the HOSPITAL... Came here in July of 2018. The restaurant smelled terrible [EDIT: not to mention that the place had more flies than people!] and the water tasted dirty, but our server was very kind and courteous. I ordered pancakes and bacon, which tasted fine. Nothing exceptional, but by no means did they taste awful. [EDIT: the people who I came with received salads with rotten greens, and a dish of frozen, improperly cooked shrimp...5 minutes from the ocean! Seriously?!?!] Unfortunately, I found myself throwing up after leaving. In fact, I was throwing up for 3 days. After being admitted into the hospital, I found out that I had gotten staph borne food poisoning from the meal I had at the Sage Diner. It was my only full meal on my trip from NJ to OBX, but 3 days and 15 pounds of lost weight later, it clearly wasn't worth the quick bite. If I make the trip down to OBX again, I'd rather not eat the whole day than have another life threatening meal at the Sage Diner. read more

Good American, fresh food in an unassuming atmosphere. The service was great. The parking lot was loaded with cars from Virginia, so you know the food must be good. I ordered a meat lovers omelet, which came with home fries and toast. ALL chefs need to be informed that "If the eggs turn brown, they're burnt." Yep, mine were dark brown. Also, while I'm sure it was an accident, my omelet had a couple of tomato pieces in it. Not normally a problem, unless you're allergic to tomato's. The manager, sensing that something was wrong, approached me and insisted on getting me another omelet. It came out of the kitchen in record time... UNFORTUNATELY, it was also burned. When we finally could not take the smell of literal shit, we asked to move to a different table. The server told us that the smell was coming from another customer (rude and unprofessional). I suggest not even going into the parking lot of the Sage Diner, even if you have to just use the bathroom. So, allow me start with this painful review. Bathrooms are not clean. Well, at least the girls. Yes, the toilets work and so does the sink but nothing could make me want to puke more then the black mold-looking substance next to the toilet. Next, the food. After eating just half my meal, I was forced to the bathroom by my asshole. The food was either over cooked or under cooked. Whatever you do though, don't get the fish and chips. It includes onion rings that don't taste anything like onion rings, and fish that tasted freezer burnt and very old overall. Well, you have to expect it from a restaurant like that. If they can't even keep the bathroom clean then they must not have enough money for new fish. Lastly, headaches. After eating there, I have a headache. Sage Diner is a good all around restaurant with a very wide variety of food choices. The menu reminds me of a NYC diner. We have eaten there 3 times now and have never been disappointed. The Chefs Salad is made with fresh cut turkey and roast beef and not deli meat. It appears to be a family owned restaurant and includes some Greek dishes which I have not tried. While the food is good I give it 3 stars due to the decor and type of restaurant. It is not a 5 star experience nor should it be. The prices are reasonable and the service is good. It has a large number of seats and we have never had to wait. read more

Have never been to the one in Onley. Got the open faced meatloaf sandwich with mashed potatoes and gravy. The meatloaf was soooo big and Sysco made even though the waitress said it was good.. it was bland.. about 49 minutes after eating it, I had the worst stomach ache, then gastric issues.
