I came for hookah and a snack and was a little disappointed that they no longer serve hookah (at least for now), but I decided to still get a snack and that was a pretty good decision. This place has absolutely amazing food. The atmosphere is pretty casual. I kind of felt like I was at someone's house, and that's probably partly because the people were also super nice. Everything tasted like it was made with real ingredients. I could tell they use a good olive oil. The labna and the faoul here were the best I've ever had. I will definitely come back and recommend this place to anyone who's in the neighborhood. I'd probably also pick up and take home if I'm in the area. I only gave it a 4 instead of a 5 because of the hookah issue, but if they had it I'd probably just move in. read more

My favorite Mediterranean on the Westbank. Service can be a gamble and the food takes a little longer than normal. (20 minutes or more to wait rather than 10 or 15) and there is usually only one person on the floor taking care of dine in and Togo orders. This place is amazing. So amazing I might even venture to say that it is in my top 3, maybe even top 2, favorite places to eat in all of southeast Louisiana. Hands down best Mediterranean food I've ever had in my life. My boyfriend and I have been here twice for lunch. The prices are good, the atmosphere is nice, the service is great. I don't understand why it is never crowded. Their pita sandwiches are around 6 bucks - cheaper than subway. ..easy choice right there. Delicious food, good prices and great service. I never thought I would find better middle eastern food in New Orleans than Los Angeles but I have to say this place is fabulous. This Cafe opened in May 2009 and is absolutely delicious. The owners are from Palestine and understand the cuisine beautifully. The service is excellent; staffed with two beautiful, lovely ladies. The menu includes hicken and beef Shawarma, chicken, beef, kufta, and lamb kabobs, fried kibby, grape leaves, falafel, hummus, baba ganouj, musabaha, qudsia, foul, lebna, Gyro, wraps, and other Mediteranean food. All the lamb served is Halal. The restaurant makes its own fresh Baklava and other desserts. It is a great place for Vegetarians to dine. The food is reasonably priced. There is even an arabic grocery store next door to pick up groceries to compliment your lunch or dinner. The restaurant does not serve alcohol but allows customers to bring their own alcoholic beverages to compliment their meals. They also allow take-out and phone-in orders and have a catering menu which makes their already well-priced food all the more affordable. Order to take home a pint of hummus or any of the other dips or a dozen falafel when you dine in. This is the best Mediterranean food I have ever had in my life. When it comes to Middle Eastern food, Sahara will make a believer out of you. Even your most skeptical relative - the one who hates everything - would have trouble hating this place. The plates are huge, especially for the price. Flavors gush from every bite. YOur stomach will be delighted that you chose this place. I have had the kafta, gyro, and sampler. All are amazing and well worth repeat trips. I now find myself seeking out Palestinian food because it is the closest approximation of what's on offer at Sahara (the owner is arabic and from Jerusalem). Location is much too far from downtown to attract a touristy crowd, but no middle eastern restaurant could survive on the West Bank without a strong following amongst the local Palestinian/Jordanian/Lebanese immigrant population. This place has been around for a few years, so it is clearly doing something right. I found the best way to get started here was to asked the owner for his suggestion. I am a white man in my 30s, and I have seen people of all colors and age groups served with the same quiet dignity and courtesy at Sahara. You should definitely venture here if you have limited experience with food from the middle east. I found the atmosphere to be reserved, but cordial. Showing all the mom and pop Mediterranean restaurants on the Westbank some love. I used to grab Sahara on takeout on a weekly basis, one of the best places to catch a lunch break at. I love their chicken and beef shawarma platter. They give generous portions of hummus and pita. Plates are so filling, and whole. This is definitely one of those home cooking kinda places. Definitely go here, it's not too far away from Halal Guys and the price is just as competitive, plus you get quality ingredients. I noticed that there was a middle eastern restaurant pretty close to me, ordered delivery. Big mistake, huge. Ordered hummus and lamb, disappointed to open the container to find ground meat, but the hummus had to be good right? All I could taste was salt, no sesame, no sumac, the olive oil was just greasy without that lovely fruity taste of good olive oil. Like I said the meat was ground, no telling if it was lamb, beef or goat. No flavor at all. No garlic how can middle eastern food be bland? The pita was good. First, the owner is very friendly. I do a rotation of my favorite Westbank restaurants and this one stays on the frequently visited list. It's nice to go someplace where the owner remembers you and chats a bit. As for the food, I have never had anything here that wasn't fantastic. Best falafel in the city, hands down. The lebna is lemony yogurty heaven on a plate. The hummus is fantastic. Chicken shwarma is moist and flavorful. The fresh pita comes to the table warm. I'm really happy that I not only don't have to drive to the Eastbank for Middle Eastern food, but if I did live on the Eastbank, I would drive to Sahara. The food is not fancy and neither is the restaurant. The food is, however, flavorful to the point that I get specific cravings for it. LOVE this place!! read more

Kind of hard to get to and thus under-crowded, Sahara Cafe has proven to me to be the hands-down best Mediterranean cuisine on the west bank and a strong contender for top ten in New Orleans. The service is excellent and the felafel is the best i've had since mahmoun's in NYC. I find the hummus and babaganoush to be a cut above average as well.
