My friend and I have lunch together at this spot every few months, and it's always deliciously satisfying. I'm kind of a food snob, but the flavor and quality of the food is comparable to some of the bigger name Mediterranean restaurants in the city. Love this little hole in the wall so much! & it's cheap too! I meant to take a picture of my chicken kebab platter, but had already devoured everything when the thought crossed my mind. The basket of pita with the meal is a nice touch as well. Sahara Cafe executes the classic dishes of Middle Eastern cuisine to perfection. We found this restaurant while out for a drive on the West Bank in Gretna and were completely pleased. We ordered the sampler appetizer and the sampler kabob - each element was was so tasty! The bread that accompanied the dishes was fresh and warm. Service was quick and courteous. The food is delicious, as good as any out there. It's not prepared the same as at every other Mediterranean restaurant, because food is prepared differently according to region. I love the rolled falafel sandwich at Sahara; every other restaurant seems to have the stuffed pita falafel. Sure I live on the Westbank, but I've tried nearly every Mediterranean restaurant in the area, including uptown, and we cook a lot of Mediterranean cuisine at home, and Sahara is brilliant. I'm a vegan, and they have a lot of veg/vegan options. They're also incredibly reasonably priced. Right behind Sahara is the Crescent Market, a great Palestinian grocery store with fresh pitas. If you hit Sahara, definitely get to the market, too. read more

Not sure where the critics went to but it could not have been here because this place has excellent food. I was and am a huge fan of Monas Cafe on Banks Street in New Orleans and this place is as good if not better. Everyone I've told about this place likes it. The food is always freshly made. There is no greasy chicken or microwavable bread. Someone here is being very unfair. You need to find out for yourself. I brought my brother hear because when he lived in new orleans, he was a huge fan of Monas. He bought the lamb chops and said he liked it better than Monas. Most medditeranean food places cannot touch Monas. I am also a huge fan of Monas and compare all others to Monas. Cleopatra is horrible and Byblos is often good but sometimes unpredictable. Some times the Kibby and rice at Byblos are not fresh. Sahara is just like Monas. fresh and tasty. You will not be disappointed. read more

first i would like to say the people who said this was a five star restaurant i had food brought to me from this restaurant once and it was extremely greasy. but i was appalled when i actually went to eat there the whole place was fitly. there was gunk on the wall between the table and the wall with hair in it. the table was sticky and when the sun shined in the door you were able to see at the adjacent table one of the chairs at the bottom between the legs was entirely encompassed with a spider web. i did not eat anything my self that day but the other people who accompanied me felt obligated to stay since we had ordered drinks already. we were the only people in the filthy place and the service was horrible i was so disgusted i couldn't even eat after we left the place. are crazy. please head that warning and don't waste your time. read more

Sahara is on our regular lunch rotation. Except for the beef schwarma, which is a little tough, everything we've had is excellent, especially the gyro, hummus, grilled veggie dishes. Sometimes they have a lamb shank special, which is delicious and a great value at around $14. The proprietors are courteous, friendly and efficient. My husband and I have always heard that Sahara was really good. My best friend and husband came down and we went on a date. When we walked in, no one was in there and the lights were extremely bright. The waiter/owner came from behind the counter dimmed the lights and started the music. We were very skeptical about eating because no one was there. We ordered appetizers which came out fairly quick. Then we ordered our entrees and when we received them, you could tell that all of our food was freshly cooked. Our veggies were crisp, neatly chopped and had not been sitting out. I grew up in a town with a great Lebanese restaurant and hold all to it as the standard. Although they didn't have exactly what I was wanting on their menu they worked with me to make it happen!! Very accommodating service very tasty food. Try the baba ganoush, it's the best I've ever had. We ended with warm baklava which was the perfect small bite of sweetness to end the meal. A friend recommended Sahara Cafe to me a couple of years ago. I estimate I have eaten 25 meals at Sahara. I can honestly say I have never had a bad meal there. The schwarma, gyro, kebabs, hummus, falafel, baklava, red lentil soup, lamb chops have all been simply outstanding. I have eaten many meals at both Mona's and Byblos on the East Bank, and stand behind my opinion that Sahara's food is tastier and fresher than either of these. read more

As first-time customers, my husband and I LOVED the food. First, the Lebanese tea was great. Then on to the falafel. It was excellent, but know that I have only had it one other time at an out of state restaurant. We will definitely order it again. As for the main meal, when I attempted to describe the salad I wanted, the waiter suggested the gyro plate because i would get hummas and pita which would not have come with a salad. My husband had the lamb and chicken plate. Both of our dishes were extraordinary - seriously! Service was extraordinary also. There were ten customers in the restaurant. The gentleman behind the register single-handedly greeted customers, took drink orders, took dinner orders, took phone orders, served the food and drinks, and rung up customer's bills without missing a beat.The food was hot, fresh, and very, very tasty. Kudos to the kitchen staff! Middle Eastern music was playing softly in the background - a nice change from the normal rock or easy listening music typically heard in most restaurants. If you are not really interested in trying other culture's food, stay away. However, should you like trying different foods with lots of flavor, then Saraha Cafe comes very highly suggested. Lovely staff (owner?) greeted me at the door & I ordered a wide variety so I could see which ones I liked best. Chicken Schwarma & Falafel Sandwich (wraps), Falafel Platter & Tabbouleh... ALL delicious & SO fresh! Haven't had such wonderful dishes since I was in my friends' Lebanese grandmother's house!
