I finally went to the restaurant side, and I ordered Chilaquiles, because I have not seen them anywhere in Louisiana. They were the real deal, and I would go back again just for that dish. They also had huevos rancheros in many other authentic Mexican breakfast dishes. I'm also very picky about coffee and there was very good. The staff was friendly, and more people on the Restaurant side, speaking English than on the grocery side. By the way, I have continued to go back to the grocery often and although prices have gone up, just like all groceries, I think it is still a very good place to find good bargains. Avocados have gone up quite a bit, but they were huge and just the right degree of ripeness so about three of them. Please give these people your business as the very large Ideal Grocery that open just around the corner from them will certainly draw business away from them. read more

Still an amazing place for authentic Mexican food. Over the past few years, eating here nearly once a month, I've never had anything bad. If you like traditional enchiladas, burritos, quesadillas, etc, there is plenty of that. But there are some amazing dishes that are hard to find elsewhere - mojarra frita (ask if they have redfish - it's so much better when they do, and get the diablo sauce). Seafood fajitas (fajitas del mar) with fish, shrimp, squid, and octopus. Really good stuff. Whole (or half) grilled chickens, caldo de res, a wide variety of ceviches - you just can't go wrong. I'm moving back to Louisiana recently. When I lived here before, they were very few Mexicans, the only Hispanics being Cuban. That said is a great grocery store that also has an incredible restaurant. I haven't been to the restaurant yet, but if it's half as good as the grocery store, I would love it. read more

If you're looking for traditional Mexican food, this is the place! It's a small locally owned little place that will not disappoint. Salsa and green salsa have amazing flavor and it's HOT! Wait for your drink! They have a lot of things on tap, soft drinks come in bottles. We ordered fajitas and got a loaded sizzling platter of meat and veggies with plenty to take home! The servers English is a little rocky but they always make sure they have it right before leaving the table. The guac actually tastes homemade, and the enchiladas are made with love. May not be as cheap as Taco Bell, but it sure tastes a hell of a lot better. The other reviews are correct! Wonderfully authentic Mexican! I had the fish and shrimp ceviche (actually a Peruvian dish but common at authentic Mexican restaurants) and the barbacoa tacos. Went for lunch today, and loved it! Talk about a Gonzales gem. Was given free chips & salsa upon arrival - salsa was spicy, so beware! I ordered two barbacoa gorditas, queso, shrimp aguachiles (shrimp in a spicy lemony green sauce & red onions), and redfish diablo. Everything was good, except that they gave me the fish plain instead of with the diablo sauce. I didn't mind though, because my mouth was already burning by that point. I really enjoyed my meal, and also noticed many others eating the daily special, the caldo de res (beef soup). One guy told me he comes every Saturday, just for the soup. Very unprofessional. Worker taking the to-go order acted like it was my fault that they put in the wrong order than what I wanted. Drove all the way home, saw it was wrong and returned it. After hubby & I raided the Polo RL store we were famished & decided to check out this Mexican place down the street. KAWONGA! This place is un. Believe. Able! You walk in, it's a little Mexicano grocery, but you walk to the back of the store & there is this little Mexican taco diner. It's super cheerful painted in several shades of orange & it's really adorable! Very neat & clean. The bathrooms were very clean as well. We ask if we order at the counter or just sit & we quickly find out no one speaks english only spanish. No problemo amigo. We are from Texas lol We sit down order some tacos. They had the tripe, tongue, carnitas, barbacoa & fish tacos. We order three carnitas, three barbacoa & one whole tilapia fried in a diablo sauce. The waitress brings us some chips & fresh made salsa plus three bottles of stuff. In the bottles were super delicious sauces of hot, hotter & HOLY CRAP! I loved the super hot 'holy crap' green one. I was so busy stuffing my face with it I forgot to ask what it was. My bad. The tacos where OMG.to.die.for! The carnitas were so tender & flavorful, the corn tortillas were fresh made & grilled....holy.baby.Jesus.YUMMY! The barbacoa was so tender it melted in your mouth & it had this smokey flavor OH.MY.GAWD! Then, then, THEN the waitress brings this freakin WHOLE giant FISH out that filled the room with a sweet aromatic aroma that came from the Flavor smelling GODS of La Michoacana !!!! We were really excited to try this place based upon the reviews as well as the nicely decorated interior. Unfortunately, it was a huge disappointment. I ordered the garlic shrimp that came to the table with a strong old fish odor. I could taste that they used margarine instead of butter, and the shrimp were floating in the margarine which saturated everything else on the plate; rice, lettuce and beans. The old shrimp were also soft and mushy, and the casings were really hard to remove. I started to feel sick and couldn't eat most of the meal. My husband, who loves burritos, said that his was tasteless and mostly lettuce and onions with very little meat. I wonder who wrote all of the good reviews? Sahuayo is one of the few good things in Gonzales, but this restaurant is better than good. The food is something to be proud of, the staff is always friendly and helpful. If you're looking for real Mexican taqueria food at reasonable prices, this is where you need to be. However, if you're looking for American style "Tex Mex", (eg. Las Palmas) this definitely isn't it. Personally, I'll take the more authentic route wherever possible. I'm certain we were the only non-Spanish speakers in the place, but the staff was friendly, patient and helpful as we ordered, so we didn't feel awkward at all. (My wife ended up just pointing at a dish on another table and saying she wanted whatever that was, and I very nearly did the same). Food came out quickly. Portions were plentiful and everything was delicious. Bonus points for the Mexican Cokes with real sugar instead of HFCS. We will definitely be coming back here often. read more
