Dinner was good. Food was tasty. Service was sufficient. Place looks uninspiring from outside, but once you get inside, you feel like you've stepped foot in Mexico. I love the ambiance, I think it adds to the experience and subconsciously adds a little something to the your food. Kind of made me feel like when I was in a little cantina in Mexico. Tip: if you go to a Mexican restaurant, always get the Mexican Coke, Not the US Coke. They come in a tall glass bottle. The flavor is better. The Shrimp with Chipotle was tasty. The spanish rice with beans weren't bad but nothing to write home about. Chips and salsa was plain. Really wanted fresh nachos, but whatever, it's free, I can get over it. The Carnitas were good. So, the food was authentic and I really like that. Now for the Store in the restaurant. This might sound/be really picky or a little OCD, but it's a turn off to me: When you go into a store and see items that past their shelf life. I understand that just because a date passes, items don't magically go bad. I understand that stores want to reduce their costs. But if you're going to sell something that passes expiration date, then at least separate it, don't try to pass it off as being new. Discount it or something shortly after expiration to move the product. April expiration and we're entering October. If a place does that, it makes me second guess what they do with their ingredients for the restaurant. Are they willing to compromise some meat that's been sitting around? How about old veggies, what if your carne asada falls on the floor, does the 5 second rule apply, maybe we can cut costs and initiate a new 10 second rule. I'm not saying they do this, Remember the food tasted good. I'm just saying when I see places compromise things for the sake of cost, I just start to wonder. Read a yelp review and it said if you are looking for Tex Mex this is not the place for you. Absolutely 100% correct. My wife is Mexican and having lived in El Paso for 17 years this place is the real deal. Had breakfast here before and as Nacho would say, "It's the best." We had dinner and from the Shrimp Cocktail to the Chicken Flautas to the Torta al Pastor ....it's was all fabulous. Regrets beans cooked to perfection along with the rice. You find yourself in Gonzalez, Louisiana. It's a hot day, but you don't want to settle for fast food or jambalaya. La Michoacana went above and beyond my expectations. I got my jarritos like I always do, and I ordered fast: tripe, barbacoa, and carnitas. This was the best offal taco I've ever had in my life. Crispy chili soaked exterior, decadent clean and soft interior. Gonzalez is named for Big Jose Gonzalez, the sheriff back in the late 1800s. Let's hope this Latin family can make their mark as well. Yesterday after work my co-workers and I ate at Sahuayo Mexican restaurant (which was then called La Michoacana Mexican restaurant.) They serve chips and salsa but please be warned, if your intake for salsa isn't the best or if you're just Caucasian this salsa is SPICY!!! The chips were a bit stale but the salsa made up for it. I actually forgot we even had a waitress due to the fact that she only came over 3 times but it was fine since another waitress, Alexa (whom was more attentive, kind, and quick) got our 2nd round of drinks while our waitress was in the restroom. What I ordered: Chile relleno topped with cheese, beans, rice and Mexican style salad which is just lettuce tomatoes and avocado and 4 tortillas on the side and an authentic Corona Mexican Michelada! The Michelada was one of the best I've ever tasted and don't even get me started on the Chile relleno, TO DIE FOR! I usually have problems with other restaurants burning the chile but Sahuayo made them to PERFECTION and the mix of salad/beans/rice + the warm tortillas set the bar high! Also if you have time, you could walk and check out the Sahuayo Food Store next door but since it's connected to the restaurant it's just a few feet away. We had dinner at La Michoacana this evening for the first time (thanks to the great reviews here). It did not disappoint! This has to be one of the cleanest restaurants/stores I have been to. We were hungry and did not take the time to browse through the grocery section but I could see from our table how neat, clean, and organized everything is. The ladies room and dining area were no exception. We were allowed to seat ourselves since there were plenty of open tables at the time. Our server was extremely friendly, even going so far as to explain what many of the authentic Mexican bottled sodas were and helping us make our selections. Each of us tried a different one - mine was called Lift I think (apple flavor) and the other was Jarritos grapefruit. Both worked nicely to counter the heat from the red sauce and jalapeno sauce. The chips and salsa hit the table immediately after we sat down. Fantastic fresh flavor, perfectly spiced with just the right amount of cilantro. No ketchupy salsa here! Both of our dishes were excellent and plentiful, and served steaming hot. One was Barbacoa and the other was the Carnitas plate. The plates came with salad, generous slices of fresh avocado, rice, beans, and diced onion and fresh cilantro. I cannot emphasize enough how perfectly cooked and seasoned the meat is! We also both chose corn tortillas which are the best I have ever had. Nothing at all like the stiff and dry store-bought corn tortillas. Great food, friendly service, and very reasonably priced. I have been to latin american restaurants all over the country, from Los Angeles to Miami to Boston, and this hole in the wall restaurant had unbelievably amazing food. They've been at this location for a while---a secret kept for Gonzales, LA, alone. The service was excellent except for a little hesitation at first---"I wasn't sure if you spoke english!" This is as authentic and delicious as it gets. I ordered my food to-go. I was told it's normal just to walk up to the counter if that's what you want to do (you can also call ahead with your order). Otherwise, just walk in and take a seat. Service was quick, and they do accept debit cards if you're paying more than ten dollars. I ordered a chorizo torta, which came out on soft, fresh made bread (see the amazing homemade pastries in their store, next door), and which was both generous and portable. The blend of spices mixed with the meat was fantastic, and the avocado-based sauce I was given on the side was habanero-hot and muy sabroso. I also ordered three tacos---tripe, carnitas, and barbacoa. Holy. Cow. ¡Claro que sí---fantástico! The salsa verde I was given on the side was rich and savory, and also tasted homemade. When you think of good mexican food, you do not think of Gonzales, Louisiana! This place was 'off the beaten path' - honestly I had never explored anything outside of the outlet mall in Gonzales - but Mom wanted to try this place after reading a few reviews off of yelp. When I first drove past this Grocery store/restaurant I said 'nope we are not going in!' but mom said 'The reviews said it was sketchy come-on!' We wandered in on a Sunday around 2 pm and there were about three other tables of spanish speaking patrons. We were quickly greeted with some chips and salsa from the hostess and both ordered tacos (Mom got shrimp, I got Fajitas and Carnitas tacos) and WOW --- these tacos were delicious. There wasn't anything fancy to the tacos except for well seasoned meat, tasty flour tortillas, and very few toppings. After lunch, we moseyed on over to the grocery store and bought a huge slice of tres leches cake which was about $4. Six tacos, two cokes, tip, and a tres leches cake cost us $24 read more

Was just in the neighborhood and searched for nearby restaurants. Looked sketchy from outside. The tortilla chips were not homemade and a little stale. Diablo Fish was very spicy and delicious. There was not a lot of fish meat for a whole fish. Nacho cheese tasted like it was from a can. Re fried beans were ok. They were lighter than they are in Mexico. Maybe made from white beans? Sad that I never received sour cream as it's a taco and should be customary but I didn't ask. Salsa was mediocre, but had a good flavor/heat level.. Chips seemed to be bagged, not fresh but you can't have everything you ask for! I'm not able to confirm some of the more positive reviews I've seen on the site about La Michoacana. It's not bad; it just didn't blow me away. Obviously, the key component is the quality of the food, which is pretty good. As it was the first time I had visited, I started off with something basic--corn fajita tacos--and they were pretty tasty. A bit heavy on cilantro (NOT a plus for me), but they're spicy and filling. Portion size was average. The price for my meal was very reasonable. The best thing about La Michoacana was the beautiful server. I didn't catch her name, but I am very likely to go back and try another entree just to see her smile. I will say that the language barrier was an issue. As a native Louisianian, I'm more a French speaker than Spanish; I'm consistently perplexed by business models which exclude sizeable portions of its home market by not employing individuals who are fluent in the local language. read more
