A great restaurant option if you're a vegetarian visiting Buffalo! Which is often a struggle, most restaurants in the area will offer a veggie burger and that's about it... but the tofu here was delicious and could be subbed in for SO many dishes. I've been struggling for a couple of days now on just how I wanted to rate Saigon Cafe. I came here on New Years Day night looking for some quality Thai food and when it came to the food they did not let me down. My issue with Saigon Cafe was that on a night that it was roughly 4 degrees outside, that they decided not to mention to us or any of the other people who walked in the front door that they did not have any heat. I would not of been upset to walk in and be told "hey, something is wrong with our heat, we are sorry" but no, they let us enter and seated us just like it was any other day. If you care about the customers, you are honest with them. Because of how hungry we were at the time (and mostly that we just really wanted Thai ) we kept our extremely thick winter jackets on and waited for pad see you (I think I'm writing this correctly). The food itself was fantastic. The chicken was hot, the noodles were tasty, and the vegetables were cooked just the way they should of been. Overall, I'm bummed to only be giving the Saigon Cafe 3 stars but I can't look past there failure to let us know that they did not have any heat. A simple heads up would of been enough to make the situation okay. Other then that, the food was fantastic and it's definitely something I would enjoy eating again. read more

I asked for hot but personally it wasn't very spicy in my opinion, if you have a higher spice tolerance it may not do it for you but they were generous with the protein in the noodles. The Vietnamese iced coffee was delicious, strong and sweet. My friends ordered udon noddles and green curry and enjoyed their meals as well. I've been to Saigon Café so many times I cant even put a number to it. It may not be the best Thai restaurant in Buffalo, but it certainly is consistent. Consistently delicious. So this is a general review and not for a specific occasion. I've loved Saigon Cafe since their previous location closer to the Buffalo State campus. The menu features Thai as well as Vietnamese dishes. The ambiance is romantic, yet casual. They have a full bar with 4-5 beers on tap. They offer happy hour from 4-7pm Mon-Fri, late night happy hour from 10-12am Thur-Sat, and Brunch from 11am-3pm on Saturday and Sunday. I have tried most of the menu, and never really had an issue with anything that I have ordered. Sometimes I stick to old familiars and other times I have tried something new. The Vietnamese pancake is my favorite appetizer. The crisp crepe like pancale is filled with shrimp, pork and crunchy bean sprouts, scallions etc. A bit hard to eat, but I can get over that. The dipping sauce adds a nice sweetness to the whole dish. It is quite large, so I suggest splitting it between 2 ppl. If in the mood for just a nibble, go with the spring rolls or pit stickers. The tom khar gai soup is also scrumptious. As far as the entreés go, I've had all their noodle and curry dishes. I usually order Pad See-Ew or Pad Thai, both delicious. Recently though, I tried the Curry Udon and I was pleasently surprised. It may have become my favorite noodle dish here. The noodles are thick and have a lovely chewey texture. The sauce has a hint of curry which is soaked up by the noodles and protien of ur choice(I had tofu.) Pretty much all the curries are tasty, my least favorite is Panang because I don't like undercooked green bell peppers. The Ginger Scallion stir fry is also the bomb! Since moving to Buffalo from Toronto just before Christmas 2015, I have eaten quite a bit of Thai food (my wife and I are big fans), all of it consistently fresh, tasty and satisfying. Saigon Cafe continues that trend, no doubt. We discovered Saigon Cafe by accident, actually. My wife remembers it being further north on Elmwood, near the Co-Op (we went looking for it one chilly February night and found Taste of Siam instead). It was there for a very long time, but they moved to this new location about a year ago (according to our waitress). The restaurant has two personalities - the neighbourhood bar with a loud TV at the front of the restaurant and the zen dining area at the back. There is a patio with a few tables, not many, but they were in the sun on a late Thursday evening. Our go-to at Thai restaurants lately has been curry, because it is usually the most consistently good item on a restaurant's menu, is relatively healthy and it almost always has coconut milk in it (mmm, so good!). Saigon's curries hit the mark on all of the above. We ordered two curries - red with chicken and green with steamed tofu. We were ecstatic to learn that we could order brown rice (white rice's healthier, yummier cousin) at no extra charge with our curries. We had only ever been charged extra for brown rice at other Thai places, which our waitress thought was totally insane. The curries were delicious. Both were brimming with fresh vegetables, the red with large chunks of bamboo, the green with seasonal vegetables. The chicken in the red curry was tender and the tofu in the green was nicely steamed, firm and luxurious on the tongue. On a spice scale of mild to wild, the "medium" spicy that we ordered was a little spicier than we have had at other Thai restaurants, but very flavourful and memorable. The big windows that look out onto Elmwood Avenue provide some fun people watching, if you fancy yourself a people watcher (hey, who doesn't?). I got there right when it suggested, and my food was ready for me. On a funny note, when I read my receipt for my request for extra spicy, they rewrote "Asian spicy!" on the receipt. I thought it was kinda funny. The food itself was pretty good. My spicy curry was pretty good, and I haven't had curry that spicy in a long time. It was just what I wanted. I'll be honest I didn't even know about this place until I tried a spring roll of theirs at the Taste of Buffalo 2 years ago. I also haven't to the Restaurant yet, my brother Nathan and his friend Nicole have eaten here 4 times (since I'm the one who goes out to eat a lot, Nathan has one up on me for that). I remember trying their Dumplings at the Taste of Buffalo for the last 2 Years, filled with Cabbage, Carrots and either Pork or Chicken with some Soy Sauce on the Side (I love the crunch as soon as you bite into it). Nathan & Nicole took me for Local Restaurant Week back in March, I love Vietnamese Food we came in, it as slow and we were sat by the Window. While deciding what Entrees we wanted we each got a plate of Dumplings (one of the best Appetizers I've ever had). I also ordered a Cocktail called the Thai Coco (Coconut Rum, Lemongrass Syrup & Lime Juice) Rich Coconut flavor sweetness from the Lemongrass (there was also a lovely fragrance) and take your Lime Wedge and squeeze some Juice over it for some Acidity. We then ordered our Entrees, Nathan got the Mongolian Pork Chop, Nicole got Pad Thai with Chicken and I got a Bowl of Pho (I felt like there wasn't a lot of Rice Noodles in it and I love my Rice Noodles) I wasn't impressed with Dessert either it was just a little bowl of Ice Cream with a Chocolate Chip Cookie (Dull & Boring) but we had to wait 10 minutes, we even waited 13 minutes to get our checks (the service was a bit lackluster). Next I come I hope it improves. Next time was a month ago For Restaurant Week again, it was Slow (me & Nathan went) on Monday and it was slow. I had a cocktail called the Lightning Bug (Sweet Tea Vodka, Citrus Liqueur, Lemonade & Iced Tea) It was like Spiked Iced Tea. For my Appetizer I got a Spring Roll called Nem Cuon, it was filled with Marinated Grilled Pork and Pickled Vegetables with a Hoisin Sauce on the Side (The Ratio of Pork to Vegetables was way off, there was only one little nub of meat in there and I found the Rice Paper to be a little Chewy) Nathan got Dumplings (again). For our Entrees Nathan got the Mongolian Pork Chop (again) but he wasn't crazy for the Butter Sauce that came with it (I agree, it tasted like Rancid Garlic). I ordered their new Noodle Dish called Bun Bo Hue an Authentic Hue Style Beef Noodle Soup with a Spicy Lemongrass Broth. It also had Braised Oxtail and Pork Ham (This dish was Hit & Miss to me, the hits were that the Broth was Spicy and the Beef was Tender, the Misses were that there was too much Cilantro and Thai Basil and I wasn't crazy about the Ham. It had a weird Texture, I didn't Taste any Smokiness or Saltiness from it and it was an Unattractive Grey Color). Also I thought the texture of the Noodles was a bit Gummy and that they were gonna come up and slap me in the Face. I am usually not a particularly picky eater when it comes to food, I will eat and enjoy just about anything you put in front of me. But, after my first lackluster experience at Saigon Cafe, I was quite disappointed. I came on a Friday night with a group of 5 friends, so it's expected the service might be slightly slower. We had a calamari appetizer that was completely bland and had to be dunked in the sauce to be edible. For my entree, I had the Bun Xao Curry with calamari. When I received the dish, the curry looked yellow and tasty, but when I ate it, no flavor at all! I decided to take a few more bites to see if I could find any flavor in the dish, and was unable to, it was just completely bland. I just couldn't take another bite of what tasted like raw noodles from a box. I had to ask for chili paste to dump on the dish and I'm usually not one to have to spice up my dish. Service was one of the worst I have experienced in recent memory, the place wasn't even full and it took forever to get things rolling and we continuously had to flag down our server. The band playing hillbilly country music in the tiny room ended up ruining our dinner during the last hour because we had to scream to hear each other talk. I contemplated giving this place three stars but then I thought back to how mind blowing the food of their competitors is and realized how badly they need to step their game up. I've heard so much hype about this place so I had to check it out. The service was mediocre. I liked the ambiance at first but for the beginning half of our visit there was no music and I think it's awkward when it's silent inside a restaurant. Before I ordered my dish I asked what type of noodles they put in it, and the waiter told me crunchy noodles. "Okay" I thought to myself, he must just mean slightly undercooked noodles. What he actually meant was that the noodles were completely uncooked with some vegetables thrown on top. An adequate knowledge of the menu would've been appreciated because I ended up greatly disliking that dish, it was definitely not what I was looking to order when I went to try this place out. The flavor was unbalanced in the green curry I had. The spice was also not spicy at all. We ordered "Asian spicy" and the waiter asked if we were sure, we told him very much so, and yet we still needed to ask for additional spicy sauce/chili peppers. It was medium spice at best. I should mention that none of the three of us that attended lunch together enjoyed our food so I know I'm not being crazy. The rice we were served was hard, both brown and white, so I'm not sure how long it was just sitting back there for. All in all, I'm not pleased with how this place presented itself. I really am surprised this place is not rated higher. I have been coming here since they were at their old location near Cole's. I try to get something different each time and am rarely disapponted. Since I really always have a great experience here, I will limit my review to my most recent experience. We were greeted right upon walking in and seated outside. The service was really great. Our waitress was attentive and kept refilling our water glasses as it was hot out. She quickly retrieved our ice cold beers as well and helped my friend decide on a menu item. She was very knowledgable about the food which I think is SOO important at a restaurant. I am a stickler for service and our waitress lived up to that. Now onto the food. We started with spring rolls which were fresh out of the fryer and so crispy. A winning combination with the pickled veggies on the side. My friend got the spicy green curry with beef. Such a good combination of spice and flavors along with the creaminess of the curry. I also love how all of the veggies have a bite to them and aren't cooked to death. I got the Bun Bo Hue which was a HUGE portion. It is a very flavorful broth with different meats and noodles. I could only finish half and took the rest for lunhc the next day. We ended the meal splitting a Thai iced tea. Very sweet and creamy as Thai iced tea should be. The atmosphere, service, and food was all exactly as expected. Love this place! read more

Visited this place on a Sunday for brunch. We had a party of 5 and had actually tried to go to a aouple od other places butbwas turned away due to not having reservations. We were drawn to this place because they had a banner saying $2 mimosas (we were sold!). The place was not busy at all and we were able to get seated right away! Granted this was not what we were looking originally looking forward as itbwas vietnamese/thai food for brunch, however, it would have to do. Service: was great! Granted the place was not packed but our waitress was very attentive and our food came out very fast. She kept our mimosas glasses full! Food: i ordered a pork chop meal ( i want even try to spell the name), it was good and the pork chop was big. The only complaint was the pork chop was a little stuff. The portion size of the dish was very large, i had to take most home for left overs. Husband ordered the pho and it was so delicious! We actually have only had pho 99 pho and we both thought that Saigon's was better. The quality of beef tasted better. Had my first experience at Saigon Cafe on a Friday night and had the ease and luxury of being seated immediately which was definitely a plus. The ambiance and interior is very relaxing, and there are even small tables outside if you want more an elmwood view. We shared pot stickers and I had my all time favorite, chicken pad thai (on the spicy side) and everything was superb. The portions are great, as they are at many thai restaurants, and everything was filled with flavor and brought out very quickly. I plan on making this one of my go-to places for thai when I am downtown. Highly recommend! read more

We headed to Saigon Cafe after a long drive from Michigan and a weekend of overindulgence. We were looking for something that had a little bit of green to it and a whole lot of taste. Saigon Cafe delivered. Setting: The restaurant comprised of both a "bar" dining section and a traditional restaurant section. The bar side of things was well decorated with intimate lighting and featured high-top modern tables for two in addition to the bar seating. The traditional side was made up of larger tables and better lighting which proved to be functional but lacked the intimacy of its cozier counterpart. The two of us chose to eat at the bar side. Menu: The menu was loaded with various options for both Thai and Vietnamese food. Our favorite dishes were there (pad thai, pho, vermicelli) as well as an abundance of new meals. Prices ranged from a few dollars to $20 for entrees. Food: We got the works. We started with an appetizer of a Thai stuffed pancake (Bahn Xeo) which was loaded with shrimp, pork, bean sprouts, bamboo, and scallions topped with basil and their homemade chili garlic sauce. The appetizer was phenomenal- the best part of the plate was the homemade chili garlic sauce and use of basil. We ordered two bowls of Tom Khar Gai soup (chicken breasts in a coconut milk base with lemongrass, lime, and basil leaves) to accompany the appetizer. The soup delivered as much as the Bahn Xeo. For the entree we split grilled Pataya Salmon which was topped with a delicious curry sauce, more chili garlic sauce, and a handful of vegetables. Very very good stuff. We loved the grilled taste imparted in the salmon. Overall: This place is fantastic for a date night or for two people just looking to grab a bite to eat. Saigon Cafe is a fusion of Vietnamese and Thai menu options located on Elmwood ave off of W. Utica near Toro. I love the location but parking comes with the typical issues in this area during peak times. I met friends there for a quick dinner and we were seated right in front of the live entertainment singer who was actually very talented but made it hard to have a consistent conversation due to the volume. As I was running late, my friends had already ordered Pho as they are obsessed about trying it in every place that we eat at. I did try the pho broth prior to her adding any condiments and it was good but holy SWEET! I will add sugar to my pho but this broth came out already incredibly sweet, it made it easy for me to decide not to order it. I went with the Tom Yum soup and Calamari instead. I'm hoping it was just a heavy hand of the cook that night because my Tom Yum soup was bitten by the sugar fairy as well. It was just too sweet to the point of me just eating my shrimp, squid and clams and pushing the remaining leftovers aside. Now what saved the night was the calamari! I love getting calamari at asian restaurants because I enjoy the chili lime dipping sauce that seems to be the typical sauce that comes with it. Let me start with the calamari which was cooked perfectly, but what I LOVED was the spicy peanut style dipping sauce that was provided. I want to like Saigon Cafe, since it's so close to my apartment, but all my experiences have either been underwhelming or disappointing. Most recently, we ordered takeout: summer rolls with tofu, pineapple fried rice with tofu, and curry udon with tofu. I'm a vegetarian, and my husband volunteered to go meat-free so we could share everything. This ended up being a bad idea because the tofu was consistently bad in every dish: too dry and chewy, and weirdly sour. I often eat tofu, so I know when it's funky. It's a semi-casual place and the service has always been absolutely wonderful. Their summer rolls are probably their best appetizer. It's the only one I've had, haha. I haven't felt any need to move on from it though. Their entrees are all amazing. I love to get their coconut curries with rice. If you order your dish spicy, it will definitely come spicy. Their soups are also really good and comforting. Apparently, it's a great place to order for pick up from what I've heard from reviewer Alex L. I feel pressure to provide more intricate details but honestly this is all you need to know. You will get great Vietnamese/Thai food and the servers are always SO nice. I wholeheartedly recommend this place. They used to be in this little quaint location across from Pano's and it was my favorite but they were getting so busy so they moved here. I went had dinner here this evening and the service and food were good. As we were finishing dinner cockroaches ran up the wall and on to the back of our seat. As we were racing out the waitress told us that this doesn't happen all the time, only when its cold. I have nothing more to say. read more

If you're in the mood for Thai, look no further than Saigon Cafe or Saigon Bangkok (depending on where you are). The best Pad Thai I've had in the area and it's been consistent for years. I recommend asking for a side of peanut saté sauce and throwing it on top! Tofu Curry is another solid choice - with a red coconut sauce and fried tofu pieces, even those who don't think they like Tofu will find it delicious in this dish. Food was good UNTIL we noticed there were a ton a flies constantly landing on us/our food and roaches crawling in the booth we were seated at. No explanation given, no attempts to remove the bugs or price adjustments offered. The staff was very attentive and kind but also very nonchalant considering there were visible roaches crawling around. If there are roaches in the dining area, I can only imagine what things are like elsewhere in this establishment! read more

Five of us stopped in for dinner at around 8:30 this past Friday night. The place was about half empty. We were warmly greeted and shown to a lovely table in the back. Upon perusing the menu I noticed many familiar sounding dishes, as well as some that I had not heard of before. While I am usually a bit of a creature of habit, I decided to try something new. My "Crazy Noodles" (Saigon-style, fresh flat noodles served with mixed vegetables and tossed in a white pepper ginger sauce) were a very good choice. Thick noodles, most likely house made, were delicately sauced and tossed with lots (!!!) of delicious chicken breast pieces, cabbage, carrots, and broccoli. The dish was large enough to bring about a third of it home for the following day's lunch.... when it was just as tasty reheated. A very good place for Asian food in the Elmwood Village. read more
