an omelet and salad on a plate

I ordered a banh xeo and it was quite a disappointment. It was gigantic but was 80% bean sprouts with little sprinkles of chicken. The prawns were only placed on one half of the pancake leaving the other side empty. This is definitely not worth $19, considering a bowl of vermicelli with a lemon grass chicken and springroll costs less.

When my colleagues and I were first trying to decide where to go eat, we received high recommendations about Saigon Kitchen. I was surprised to see that they had a 5 star rating, and I knew I had to see for myself how good this place was. Oh. My. Goodness. I have not laughed this hard while interacting with staff at a restaurant in a very long time! The staff and chefs there were absolutely wonderful, not to mention funny and considerate. Customer Service: One of my colleagues had been peering into the kitchen to watch the chefs cook when one of them approached him and offered their chef hat to him and asked if he wanted to go back there -- and if he did, he'd have to cook. After some lighthearted bantering, the hat was returned, but what cracked us up was how observant the staff there was, as a few of the hosts and waiters approached my colleague and said "hi chef" to him. It was brilliant, to say the least. Food: we ordered the Seafood Caramel, Seafood Hot Pot, Vegetarian Salad Roll, and the Vegetarian Chow Mein. Everything was absolutely delicious! The peanut sauce that came with the salad roll contained meat products, and the waitress mentioned it to me so we were able to swap it out for a sweet plum sauce. I really appreciated that, as I would not have enjoyed getting sick. My colleagues who ordered seafood dishes both enjoyed their dinner. We definitely understand why Saigon Kitchen has a 5/5 star rating. Things to note: if you're from out of town and you're driving over, the street to turn onto from the highway is literally right after you cross the intersection, so heads up and don't be surprised if you miss it at first turn. The restaurant can get very busy, so if you know you'll be going there for dinner, I highly recommend you call in advance to book a reservation so you can be guaranteed a table -- many of their regulars do this. I'd definitely come back again!

Beef stew, my go to at any Vietnamese restaurant.

It was close to our hotel so we were able to walk which was a bonus. Lucky we had mapquest since it is tucked away. Friendly staff, the food was tasty and hot. We had beef roll, the beef stew and the chicken with caramel sauce.

Out for lunch with the husband, thought we should try Vietnamese. Friendly staff and good food! I also ordered a prawn hot and sour soup to go not pictured, too much food for two people.

Pho with no tendon or tripe.

We were seated after a short wait, as there was only one server. They were friendly and attentive. They have quite a bit of ramen options ranging from tonkotsu to curry ramen. I went with the basic tonkotsu ramen and added an egg. I wanted to be able to taste the broth without anything extra. My aunt got their seafood ramen (Nagasaki champon). I was quite surprised by the portion and toppings for each. There was plenty of noodles. The pieces of pork were large and I liked the variety of toppings. The seafood one had soooo much seafood ( small shrimp, larger ones, squid, and mussels) and had plenty of veggies. Both ramens were quite filling. Typically I don't drink all the ramen broth due to it being too salty or rich, but I found their broth had just the right balance. It was flavourful and rich, but not overly in either. Although at first I thought the price was a bit high, the quality and quantity justify it. Overall, it was a great meal to end our day on the island. I'll definitely be a returning customer.

Best food in Nanaimo!…read more I dined in on my lunch break having seen the good reviews online. I was not disappointed! The quiet establishment (on Friday around 2:00) had a pleasant and clean atmosphere with some K-Pop music playing on a TV situated in a corner. The menu is clear and easy to order from. If you struggle with pronunciations, each order has a corresponding number and an image of each dish. I ordered the SO BULGOGI DEOP-BAP. It was phenomenal! The beef and rice were cooked perfectly had a slight sweetness to it, the kimchi had a perfect spiciness, the bean sprouts and cabbage were fresh, and the romaine lettuce with the chili dressing was delicious and sweet. In addition to the atmosphere and the food, the prices I considered very fair for the quality and quantity of the food. Lastly, the service was good. This will definitely be one of my #1 spots to eat on Vancouver Island! I am so pleased to have finally been introduced to this culinary gem. Incredible!

Another one of those Yelp finds, needed a place, didn't know where to go, this one was glaring at me, so I took my wife in tow and went. This one on the outside is odd, as it is attached to a motel, and yes.... the parking is on the motel side. The main door to the restaurant is also next to the motel, and when you come in it's got this newage wooden feel, and you know you are here. We saw many seasonal food pictures up of things that are not on the menu, yet for the first night we went for the menu and ordered a pork rib dish and also their steamed egg. When the banchan came, I knew we were in for a great meal. There is this mixed salad with some sort of bean sauce they use as salad sauce.... this dish alone was a solid win. All the banchan was good, and our server would come by and asked if we needed any more. When the ribs came they were on a hot plate, just sizzling away with the white onions under the meat just caramalizing hard waiting for you to get in there and eat everything. A few minutes later the steamed egg came in a stone bowl, and our server used a spoon to separate the sides of the egg from the bowl, the steam was intense, it was a cold night, this was exactly what we needed and wanted for a meal. There was a lot of food, and we had to pack most of it to go, and I thanked our server, and asked him if we were to come back.... what would you recommend, and he pointed to the chicken noodle soup they only do for winter.... you can guess what we ordered the following day... and yes we came back for lunch. The chicken noodle soup was amazingly deep, and it is cliche to say, but very homey, comforting, clean, hearty, it had it all.... we were as happy as we were the day before, and I can't wait to come back to Nanaimo and come back to this place. Also.. if you like popular Korean-pop music.. don't worry you'll listen to it on the loop as I think I heard APT three times!
