The Bun Bo Hue broth is probably one of the most flavorful broths I've had, it's perfectly seasoned. My brother had the wonton noodle soup and that was very delicious as well. I wish I had ordered the sandwich but it's something that I will have to return and try. As for service, it's a family owned eatery (so nice to see) but I don't think they have the customer service part down just yet. Omg, yes! Finally! A good banh mi place in New England that ISN'T in Dorchester, MA (AKA Vietnamese town). I am a HUGE fan of banh mi but ever since my big girl move from Texas to New Hampshire, I have been very unimpressed with every banh mi joint I've tried up here - and yes, I have tried banh mi in Boston's Chinatown and no, I was NOT impressed. Saigon Sandwich House lives up to my expectations. GREAT banh mi! But desserts/drinks could use some work. (I have tried the famed Hong Cuc Grand Eatery that is 2 minutes away but the banh mi from Saigon Sandwich House is better overall.) The banh mi here has all the necessary elements to a solid banh mi. The French bread tastes like it was baked fresh and has that perfect, crisp, flaky exterior with a fluffy interior. Banh mi is pretty messy as it is, you WILL get crumbs all over you but there are some places that over-toast their French bread which makes the bread way more flaky than it needs to be. The bread here is perfect. Saigon Sandwich House fills your sandwich up with a good portion of cold cut meats! The cilantro and jalapeños are fresh. The pickled carrots and daikon are lightly pickled and sour enough. BUUUTTTT....the two most important ingredients in my book: pate and buttery mayo. My favorite thing ever is getting down to the last bite of my banh mi and all that's left is that end piece of bread, a glob of pate and a glob of that scrumptious buttery mayo for the perfect last bite. *drooool* The pate and the buttery mayo from Saigon Sandwich House have won me over and leave no room for complaints. The nuoc mia AKA sugarcane drink here needs some work. My drink was a bit more orange than it should have been which means there was too much orange juice added to the fresh sugarcane juice. Fresh sugarcane juice is a very pale yellow color but you typically add a splash of freshly squeezed orange juice in there to enhance the flavor. Saigon Sandwich House overdid it on the OJ and I think the OJ here is store bought so it tasted a tad bit artificial as it overpowered the actual sugarcane. I also tried the che ba mau AKA three color dessert. This is one of the easiest Vietnamese desserts to make but I thought it was just okay here...I wouldn't order it again. I tried the combo and bbq beef (a rip-off at $5.75) - both were lacking flavor and did not have enough protein or pickled veggies in them. Although, I did like how fresh and light the bread was. I don't agree with some reviews claiming their sandwiches are better than Hong Cuc. Saigon needs to step up the flavors. I'd most likely return for drinks. If you like a more light flaky banh mi bread this is the shop you want! All combo flavors are perfect and I could eat this for days without feeling bored. Shakes: Light and refreshing. I love the banh mi at this place, it's delicious and the price is average. The lady at the front desk was extremely kind and friendly. However today I came back for an avocado shake. I was really craving a avocado shake with boba. I watched the male employee make the drink from my seat, he clearly put water into my shake. He added only a drip of half and half that was left over from the carton. I saw him pull out a completely new carton of milk to pour into my friends drink, yet he didn't put anymore in mine. My drink came out disappointing. It tasted like blended down avocado water... I think it's interesting the things people do when they think you can't see them. This place is the real deal for Banh Mi. I actually went to this restaurant a ton during my college days, and since I left, I do miss this place. This is my first time in Boston for a business trip and I wanted to get food before I headed to my final destination in Lowell. I found Saigon Sandwich House not far from where I'm going and decided to catch an Uber from the airport. My Uber driver dropped me off and I walked inside the restaurant with my suitcase. I see 3 staff members and I nodded hello to the cook who saw me enter the store while the owner and another staff was assisting a customer at the register. The customer ahead of me ordered less than $10 worth of food and they wouldn't accept debit transactions under that amount, the owner asked if he had cash in a rude tone, so, he went to go get cash from his vehicle. I ordered grilled pork vermicelli salad, egg rolls, and Saigon iced coffee, I attempted to pay with my debit card but it got declined after several attempts, but they already started to make the food before the payment was process. Apparently there's a security block to prevent fraud on my card because I'm from out of state and had to use a different card. I could tell the owner was upset at this point. I had just enough to purchase my items on my other card and unfortunately couldn't leave a tip. After I paid for my items I can see her behavior was flustered. I didn't specify whether it was to go or not, that's my fault, but they didn't ask either. I sat down and waited for my food, which took less than a minute to receive, the owner looks over and I can tell what she was thinking, she asked if I was dining in, and I said please, and the food was already packed in a Togo container and bagged ready to go, she looked pissed and took it out the bag and said it's in the togo because I didn't tell her. Her body was shaking and she was very upset for some reason. She pushes the food across the countertop and I walked over to get it and I apologized. I'm the only customer in the store and nobody else has come in since writing this review. The egg rolls came about 7 minutes later and she walked it over to me and said "here's your eggrolls, honey", she's probably calmed down a bit at this point. I've managed a restaurant and have been in the customer service industry and this wasn't the service I expected. I understand they're busy prepping food and have things to do but the reason you have a business is to serve people, and that includes customer service. Otherwise, the food is good. I would have left 5 stars if I didn't feel belittled and received rude service. I will give this establishment another opportunity in the future, I'm sure she's just having an off day... But now I have finished my food and got my Uber and preparing to leave. She now looks more relaxed.... Update: I returned to the restaurant 1 hour later after I finished my business errand, I wanted to leave a tip because I didn't have enough earlier, I pulled up in my Lincoln Continental, walked in, and placed my tip in the jar and walked out. A family owned cute little cafe. Don't bother going to a Vietnamese restaurant for bun bo hue. Just come here, it's the best bun bo hue In the area, and they're quick with the service. Their banh mis are great; their bread is traditional with the crispy outer layer/crust, and fluffy on the inside - this won't cut the roof of your mouth like other banh mi locations. I always get the Dac Biet (combo/special) with extra pâté. They also sell their pâté separately. If you're up for bubble tea, they don't fall short on that either - great quality drinks at reasonable prices. Ever had chè? They have the best around and they're instagram worthy.
