I truly wish I could give this place a full five stars, because the food itself is absolutely amazing. Every dish I've ever tried was flavorful, well-prepared, and clearly made with care. You can tell a lot of heart goes into the cooking here. On top of that, the staff is wonderful -- friendly and genuinely welcoming, which always makes us feel valued as guests. Unfortunately, I have to rate my current experience four out of five stars due to an issue that significantly impacted our meal. While we were eating, there were cockroaches crawling on the wall near us, which was extremely unsettling and completely tainted the experience. It made it very difficult to continue enjoying our food, despite how delicious it was. I say this with sincerity: if the restaurant can fully address the cleanliness concerns, including any cockroach or rodent issues, I truly believe this place can return to being a solid five-star restaurant. Though they advertise they serve both Thai and Vietnamese cuisine, you won't find boat noodle soup or khao soi here for Thai food. For Vietnamese noodle soups, they do offer some of the other popular ones like bun bo hue, bun rieu, and bo kho. Here, they also have rice plates and vermicelli bowls too. Best Vietnamese restaurant in Lowell hands down. The broth for their pho is so rich and crisp that it makes me forget that I have a cold. And the cuts of meat that they use for their dac biet is so tender and full of fats. We didn't have to wait long for a table even though it was a busy weekend. It's not too small of a space and customers eat pretty fast, so tables clear up and get filled quick. My husband got the wonton soup with yellow noodles and I tried some of his broth. To my surprise it tastes just like egg drop soup. Very savory. I've also had their meekathung/chow foon a few times and it's great, doesn't lose to Cambodian restaurants in the slightest. My cousin also orders fried chicken from here every time we have a family get together because their chicken size is big, and it's golden and crispy, and just so good. If you're still wary about trying this place, I suggest you take the advice of the many award plaques hanging on their walls for best Asian(?) restaurant that were received years in a row. No greeting, no water, no napkins, long wait for menus, no check ins on how the experience is. We had to grab our own napkins, and had to give notice we didn't have any water either. So with no expectations for service, we got the pho dac biet. The flavors were great. Not too heavy, good body on the soup, and it was a little sweeter than what I'm used to. I was given the recommendation for Viet Thai for the "best Pho around". I have never have Pho so if I was going to I wanted the best. We ordered a large Pho, rice and chicken fingers and everything was fantastic. The broth was exceptional. The rice was fresh and the batter on the fingers was really some of the best I have had. Not sure how to eat pho but we managed through and enjoyed it all. Will definitely be back. Based on a 1-time recent visit. Seems to be family run. I got the Beef Pad Thai for takeout ($11.95) and I kid you not, in 5 mins or less the hostess had my order ready after I paid. I was surprised by the very quick turnaround (& a little suspicious lol), but the order was decent overall. -1: It was missing any crushed peanuts which is traditionally on top of the noodles. The pad Thai sauce was also very strong in fish sauce flavor but palatable. And portion size was fairly substantial enough to share amongst 2. The rice noodles were very chewy (in a good way, I think an indication of being fresh), piping hot like it was definitely wok-fried. A little skimpy on the beef and mung bean sprouts. I notice they charge a small "local" tax on top of the standard meals tax which is weird, not sure if that's a mandated Lowell thing. And if you can pay with cash that's recommended or you'll get charged 3% more with credit card. read more

Update on my review and service: I came here recently to celebrate with my family for dinner. I know the service is normally bad, but this time the male server was good and polite. The issue I had was after we paid and left and the charge went through on my credit card I noticed it was more than what I had on the receipt. When I called a male picked up and I simply asked why it was more than the original receipt. Apparently there is a 3% service charge for using a credit card. I don't run across this normally when I eat out at restaurants. Apparently the sign was outside of the restaurant window, which of course I didn't notice, cause it wasn't clear at all. When I asked him where it said there was a 3% charge he said everyone always calls about it, and that we should "all know". Even though clearly I did not know and the server didn't inform us of this. He was mean and had a horrible attitude about it as well. If it is so obvious how come so many people are calling about it??? Next time have your servers tell people there's an extra charge if they are using a credit card! Shame on the man answering the phone for talking down to customers because we don't know there's a service fee. read more

EVERYTHING HERE IS SO GOOD! I'm shocked by the 3.5 stars overall rating because I legitimately loved everything I ordered. The food is authentic, the flavors are developed, and the prices are cheap - what more could you want? This little gem in downtown Lowell is the perfect stop for all your Vietnamese cravings and then some. They have a pretty decent sized menu with everything from pho to vermicelli to rice plates. Made the 45 minute trek from Manchester, NH to try out Viet Thai and lemme tell ya, I'll make that trek over and over again for this delicious food. You walk in, seat yourself, and someone will be by to give you your menus. The fried chicken wings are MASSIVE. They are super crispy on the outside and oozing juice on the inside. These took the longest to come out despite being an appetizer but they fry them fresh because they came out piping hot. The meat was verrry tender. The fried squid/calamari was perrrfect - fried well, good texture, and it just had the perfect balance of salt and pepper. For my entree I got the stir fried crispy yellow noodles with seafood. I don't really like eating my vegetables but that SAUCE was so delicious and tasty that it made all the vegetables tasty as well. I love having the mixture of the soggy sauce-soaked noodles on the bottom with the crispy noodles on the top because it adds some variety. What surprised me most was the pho. Some places really water it down and dilute the broth so they can make more bowls but Viet Thai does NOT do that. When you walk into the restaurant you can already smell the hint of pho but when they brought it out to the table...the aroma, the fragrance... MOUTHWATERING! You just already know it's going to be good. The flavors are just so wonderfully developed and the broth is just so rich. Viet Thai definitely has the best Vietnamese food Lowell has to offer.
