Tried Saigon Tiger on a whim and found them a little disappointing. To start, their rice noodle bowl is so pricey for such a small bowl ($14), especially since it was just rice noodles with a few add-ins. Disappointing because their Lemongrass Chicken was delicious. Would say their Viet Coffee was actually terrible though. It was basically watered down Viet Coffee with a splash of condensed milk. Service was interesting to say the least. While the staff were polite and on top of checking all the tables, we did feel rushed to be honest. What I'm discovering is that Cambridge and Somerville are no longer a bastion for the international food scene. Saigon Tiger presentation is 5 star. I will give them that. This Vietnamese food is a far cry from being the best in the state. I would personally rank it toward the bottom myself. Let's face it, things aren't getting any cheaper so you're going to be paying more for everything. The $15 dollar banh mi is common now. If you're paying that much it better be great. Cute little spot right across from Davis Square station with about 25-30 seats. The menu is simple--apps, banh mi, vermicelli, and rice bowls. Nothing too out of the ordinary, but solid options. The Lemongrass chicken thighs were more flavorful than the crispy ones. There were no descriptions on the "fried egg rolls" and expected the traditional Vietnamese taro pork egg rolls but realized later it had a little V for vegetarian and was only a cabbage egg roll. Would skip next time. The dine-in experience could use some work. The table was so sticky I practically had to peel my phone off with a sound like velcro. Definitely made me think twice about resting my arms on it. I'll probably do takeout next time--food seems worth trying again, but I'd skip the dine-in experience. Cute little restuarant in the heart of Davis Square. Don't be fooled by the exterior, there is plenty of seating inside. The staff was very friendly and attentative. It honestly could've been two servings if I wasn't famished when we went. We also ordered the bao buns. Was indecsive so did one beef and one pork. Both were delicious but I was a bigger fan of the pork bun. To drink, I got the spicy lemonade which was delicious. The drink had an incredible layering of flavors which honestly made me think "THIS is what I want from a mocktail". My friend got the vietnamese coffee which she thoroughly enjoyed. This place has the BEST cocktails I've had in Boston! We got the lychee martini and another spicy cocktail with chill oil and coconut milk. Both had such unique and delicious flavors and were reasonably priced at $14 each. Every dish we got was also delicious. The portion sizes weren't skimpy but also not huge, so we got a few dishes to share. Our favorites were: Grilled chicken banh mi. The chicken was tender and curry-flavored. It paired perfectly well with the vegetables, crispy baguette, and sauces of the sandwich. Grilled okra. Such delicious flavors and well-cooked. Tofu spring rolls. Decided to check this place out after my doctor's appointment and I am so glad I did! Their Banh Mi is humongous! The Lemongrass Chicken Banh Mi has marinated chicken thigh, pate, mayo, and a varieties of pickled veggies. I really like the marinated chicken thigh, it's very juicy and tender. My friends and I did some work at Saigon Tiger, since we thought it was more of a cafe. Most people there seemed to be eating (not working) but we didn't have any problem working since they had wifi. Just be aware that it's more of a restaurant than a cafe! I got the ube vietnamese coffee latte, while my friend got the classic vietnamese latte. I liked my drink compared to other lattes I've had, even though I was a bit thrown off since ube is usually more purple than blue. First off, this place is adorable. It set my expectations a very high! We ordered the house muddled drinks, which were delicious- I highly recommend. But the food was really sub par. I ordered a crispy chicken lemon grass rice bowl and my friend ordered the tofu noodle bowl. The chicken just wasn't great quality- to the point that it was chewy and funky and distracting, even through the breading was great. My friend's tofu didn't have any flavor or much crispness. The prices are not cheap but the food is prepared very well. Of the "aesthetic" Vietnamese cafes I've tried in the Boston/Cambridge/Somerville area outside of Dorchester, this spot has my favorite banh mi! We got the beef spring rolls ($8), lemongrass chicken banh mi ($13), BBQ pork banh mi ($13), and an iced coconut matcha coffee ($8). We got to try 3 different kinds of meat and I was impressed by all of them! I've never had beef spring rolls before and I was expecting the beef to be quite plain, but it had a really nice seasoning to it and was super tender. The lemongrass chicken had a strong lemongrass flavor and was on the saucier side so the lemongrass sauce soaked into the bread. The BBQ pork had the sweetest flavor out of the different meats we tried and I loved how smoky and juicy it was! The spring rolls and banh mi were packed with fresh veggies. The pate in the banh mi was rich and tasty. The coffee was quite pricey but came in a large cup. I was able to taste the coconut and matcha flavors, which complemented the coffee well. Even though they added condensed milk the coffee wasn't overwhelmingly sweet. I would definitely come back again. The banh mi are pretty hefty on their own so a single sandwich can be a meal by itself-- the 2 of us were pretty hungry when we came here and splitting both spring rolls and banh mi left us stuffed. This place is fairly new and they are still ironing out some kinks... for a "fast casual" experience the food came out a bit slowly and the staff seemed stretched a bit thin, but this is completely normal when places are new and finding their cadence. I feel that these learning curves are expected for new establishments so I'm never bothered. The food was so fresh and tasty. The bread was good too, with a light crunch on the outside and fluffiness on the inside. I was full and satisfied when I finished the sandwich. I wanted to like this place because I normally love Vietnamese food and it would've been really nice to have another solid Asian restaurant in Davis. So that's probably why I felt more disappointed at the mediocre food. Everything else - the decor and service - was great! They seem to be going for a very mid-century modern meets urban Asian eatery vibe which would normally/probably be well-received by most Cambervillians. And our server was very attentive and friendly too. All that said, the meat (both chicken and pork) was pretty fatty, the noodles were stringy and dry, and the portions were smaller than we expected. And especially given that there are restaurants nearby with better food and portions (even if older decor, which has its own charm), it's hard to say if I'd return other than to maybeee give it another try with their bahn mi. read more

I walk by this area a lot and to be honest I did not notice this restaurant until a couple weeks ago. Finally decided to give it a shot today - and let me tell you... Probably the best banh mi I've had. The bread texture is perfect - it does not compare to typical banh mis which are either too soft, or too hard. They chose their bread perfectly. As for the flavor, amazing. I could not ask for anything more and would come back for lunch. I also had the BBQ pork rice bowl - wow. Perfect combination of savor, sweetness, and herbal. Tenderness of the meat, crunchiness of the veggies, the flavorful medium of the rice (its not just a regular white rice!). I don't want to spoil it too much, you have to try it out yourself. Generous portion too. Besides the normal veggie and protein ingredients, it also comes with a thin layer of pork paste, which is tasty! And very light on the peanuts, which may have helped it be more flavorful. I ordered the lemon grass chicken noodle bowl and there were so many noodles without taste and on top just small portions of the vegetables and chicken with a little side of sauce. It just had zero broth that would have helped it be a little more combined? I don't even know what to say. It just did not have taste at all! Very disappointing meal. We also ordered hot tea, which they hardly have any variety, but it was just a little teabag floating in a very hot glass of water. Again could have been so much more and I was never offered more hot water. The server was dull, the atmosphere was boring with low music on, the floors and windows were dirty so it wasn't fun to look outside onto the Davis Square area and the bathroom was really gross. Food: The banh mi were really huge! They load with tons of toppings and good protein. However, not a huge fan of the bread, it was a bit stiff/stale like it has been sitting out for too long. So it wasn't as soft inside/crunchy outside as I usally would have it. They didn't have a thit nuong banh mi which is my personally favorite, but the pork was filling with good amt of seasoning. The chicken wings were crispy with a hint of ginger/lemon grass. The chicken lemongrass rice plate had tons of toppings & protein but not enough rice to a have a full proportional bite and it was pretty costly like $30 for a small box. Pretty good non-authentic Vietnamese food at a higher cost! Coconut Matcha Coffee 4.5/5 -- actually grew on me the more i drank it. It's very coconuty and less matcha/coffe-y. I really enjoyed it and I will probably get this again; however $6 or 7 for coffee is a lot of money so i probably won't be getting it often. Vietnamese Iced Coffee 3/5 -- it feels like a regular latte i can get at that coffee shop next door rather than real vietnamese coffee. It is far off than the tastes of Ba Le's. I think they need more condensed milk and crushed ice. Not worth the $6. Chicken Banh Mi 4/5 -- pretty decent banh mi. The chicken flavor is there and love the addition of the pate. The bread is soft and flakey. I would go back for it. However, it is also a bit overpriced at $13. Even with this inflation, I think I have seen banh mis less than $10 still. I would get this again though. Pork Noodle Bowl 3.5/5 -- It's decent for me, but it feels a bit whitened. Irene said that argula as the veggie choice is weird as they traditionally use lettuce, but my theory is it's probably "healthier" and they can market that. Their interior is really cute and they also have free wifi, so it can be a nice study cafe spot! Although they do have pretty limited seating. If I were to come again, I would get the banh mi and the coconut matcha, or just the coconut matcha, and stay here to study. read more
