I chose the Everything Bagel, which had a thin, crispy crust on the outside, but the inside was full of soft, airy textures, and the spiciness of the black pepper was particularly prominent. It wouldn't be an exaggeration to say it's the best bagel I've ever had. The Favorite: Boiled egg + tomato + avocado, fresh, refreshing, and full of oily aroma, delicate, fluffy, and with a touch of crispness, it's hard not to be the Favorite! I chose the Rosemary Sea Salt Bagel, which, as always, was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, with both seasonings having very prominent aromas, becoming more fragrant with each chew. They have free wifi so if you come during slower hours, it's a convenient spot for studying. Despite the usual long lines, the staff are always friendly & efficient. I highly recommend their Classic Lox! They always load up their fresh bagels with generous amounts of add-ins. Definitely getting your moneys worth. Two things tipped me off right away that this place isn't for anyone who has high standards for bagels: They were out of both sesame and poppy bagels; and they toast their bagels unless you go out of your way to tell them not to. The plain bagel I got was dry, flat and bland, with a neutral, characterless texture that lacked much contrast between the crust and interior. Sure, the bagel was a big step up from a heated-up frozen supermarket bagel, and I'd have been OK with it if I got it in a random diner in the middle of nowhere. But it was two giant steps down from the bagels you get in any of the several acclaimed bagel places in the Boston area--two of the best of which happen to be within 10 blocks of this place. On the other hand, this place has tables, and the basement brick vibe, while not particularly pleasant, isn't oppressive. And to be fair, their business seems much more based on the modest selection of breakfast and lunch sandwiches served on bagels rather than on the bagels themselves. The counter service was civil and efficient. So if you're not looking for great, or even very good, bagels, then this place isn't a bad option for lunch in Harvard Square. If you're in it for the bagel, though, keep walking--you don't have far to go. read more

Long lines on weekends, limited seating. The bagels are decent, soft & fluffy. The everything bagel had good seasoning, but the rosemary sea salt was all rosemary no sea salt. We got the bagels 'as-is' as the shop does not have dairy-free cream cheese options. The person at the register was nice & explained on weekends they can only accommodate one as-is bagel per person which is fine. However, another person (?manager) interjected and stated it was a limit of one as-is bagel per party, not per person, which seems a little absurd. We ended up ordering and paying separately to accommodate the one as-is bagel per party rule. When we picked up the bagels however the manager was again rather hostile and stated it was one per party even if the party split up. There's no signage in the store about the rule and their website actually specifies the rule is one as-is bagel per person NOT per party on weekends, so the manager was wrong. It's fine to have arbitrary rules but if you're going to enforce them, there should be appropriate signage up and it should be correct on the website. Overall, bagels are decent and while the cashier was friendly, the manager was off-putting and enforcing an incorrect rule so would not recommend this place. Yummy yummy bagels! Always love coming to this cool bagel shop whenever I am around Harvard Square. If it's around breakfast time expect there to be a line but don't worry it moves quickly. But come early because they do run out of bagels. I have tried several different kinds of there bagels but I always go back to their everything bagel. They have a few specialty bagel sandwiches but you can customize your own and you have a list of different spreads and toppings to choose from. They also offer coffee and I've tried both iced and warm and depending on the weather they always hit the spot. They have plenty of seating inside and a bench out front. I really like all the plants that decorate the place and the interesting books and Vinyl covers. My favorite spread that they have is their jalapeno cream cheese! I love spicy so this one's perfect for me. The jalapenos are always fresh and huge and they are not stingy with the amount they smear on your bagel. Black Sheep was not too busy during midafternoon and had plenty of seating. I ordered The Favorite on an everything bagel. There was no line, and the food came out in a timely manner. Out of all the bagels I had that day, this was honestly my favorite. Everything just blended perfectly in this sandwich. It was generously packed, and each ingredient tasted fresh. There was a small bit of skin on the avocado but that was easy to spot and remove before I started to munch away. I loved the texture of the bagel as it was soft but still had a bounce with each bite. My friend ordered an Asiago bagel with Cinnamon Honey Butter spread, and that was also good. There's always a long line but it moves pretty quickly, from the front door to the cashier it only took about 5-10 minutes, and by noon they were sold out of about half the bagels. We got the rosemary salt bagels (with PBJ filling) and everything bagel (turkey avocado) with added sprouts and cucumbers. The rosemary one was fine, but the everything bagel was extremely salty, and there was half a cucumber slice and no sprouts in my sandwich--sad panda:( overall it's a super bustling spot in a prime location, but unfortunately didn't meet my expectations. read more
