They give you a decent amount of toppings and noodles. The broth is pretty light. Not too much MSG in it. Both the lemongrass chicken rice and the grilled pork vermicelli has the same charredness to the meat. I loved the charcoal flavour to it. We came on a rainy Sunday night and it was pretty quiet. Seated right away and given menus. To take advantage of it being our first time at this restaurant, we settled for the 5 course meal for 2. This consisted of 2 appetizers, 2 mains and 1 dessert for around $60. We chose the spring rolls , papaya salad, beef pho , Saigon fried rice and banana chocolate cake. Ice cream was on the list of dessert choices but we found out later that the banana chcolate cake also came with ube ice cream ! So the better value there. The papaya salad was light and fresh but a little on the astringent side as it caused me to cough a bit more than usual, but great flavour. The deep fried rice chips that came with it was a nice textural addition. The spring rolls were crispy and packed with a good amount of meat. The pho soup was comforting and flavourful but not as deep and rich as I've had before. The fried rice had the silliest soft egg and was tasty as well but lacking also the more deep umami or " wok hey" flavour when fried rice is cooked at a higher temp in a wok ( but I'm also used to Chinese style fried rice dishes so maybe soem bias). The banana cake was smooth and yummy, not the strong of banana and paired well with the ice cream. Overall I think it was a great way to sample many dishes in one meal. First time trying out Saigonville Vietnamese Cuisine on a slow Friday evening. They took over the spot from Mr. Red Cafe. A few $15.00 deals (Monday to Thursday) along with $59.90/$79.90 5-course dinner specials. Pho bowls are in the $17.95 to $22.00 range. They even have rigatoni on their menu. - Goi xoai du du ($12.95) - small kick but standard mango papaya flavours - Cha gio cua ($14.00 for 2) - came out piping hot. Truffle crab filling was tasty - Bun bo hue ($18.00) - decent broth. Viet pork ham was the best of the meats. Brisket was overcooked, pork rib slightly dry, no pork blood - Goat meat noodle soup ($19.95) - red dates and goji berry was new, broth was mild. Tasty Vietnamese place on Hastings. This place used to be Mr. Red. Parking is available on the side streets. There are also metered streets on Hastings. Place looks pretty modern, with the wooden trim and tiled walls. Bit of a hipster feel with the shelves and plants. Staff were friendly. No complaints. I tried their Saigon knocking noodle soup (Hu tieu go Sai gon). Basically pork (instead of beef) pho with pieces of deep fried pork rind. Nice and tasty, though the portion was a bit smaller than expected. Broth is clear. Served with plenty of green onions, and some bean sprouts and black pepper. Pricing is a bit higher than the competition. There are also options to add additional meet (such as pork ribs) for a few bucks more. Wouldn't mind coming back at some point, though there are quite a few other places along the same stretch. read more

Came for their soft opening that had a limited menu but 30% off everything! The restaurant is newly opened by an ex-Lunch Lady chef. We got the Truffle Cha Gio, Hu Tieu Saigon, Softshell Crab, Grilled Baby Octopus, and Bo Luc Lac. Everything was really great. The cha gio was my favourite. It was really juicy and truffle was a nice touch. I usually don't like cha gio that's not homemade, so this is high praise! The Hu Tieu Saigon was really good as well -- a very simple but well done dish. Tastes just like at home. My mom often makes this dish and it's on par in my opinion. The only thing I didn't like was the pho noodles -- not my preferred texture. The soft shell crab with the chili sauce was really good but I do wish the sauce had a little more punch to it -- either spice or flavour. It was a little light to me. The garlic bread that came along with it paired well. The baby octopus is very similar to a dish I've had at Lunch Lady. It comes with a sweet citrusy dip that complements it really well. I think my octopus was a little overcooked though as they weren't as tender as I was expecting for my soft mouth. The only dish I was disappointed with was the Bo Luc Lac. It doesn't have flavour you would expect from an average bo luc lac. The gravy was too Western for my taste. The salad was good but didn't really pair well with the steak. The dauphinoise was too small to enjoy with the amount of steak you get. However, the steak was cooked well and I could see some folks liking the flavour. It just really wasn't for me. This restaurant deserves credit though, for their innovative dishes and use of ingredients to put a twist on traditional Vietnamese cuisine. I came on a Sunday evening and it was very slow, hopefully business picks up for this spot as I found the food relatively good and tasty! Saigon Chicken Wings (3/5) - $14.95 Taste: Salty sweet chicken wings, not the juiciest, but not dry either. Portion Size: 5 pieces Sate Octopus Skewers (4/5) - $12.95 Taste: Mini octopus had a nice charred flavour to it and I liked the dipping sauce which was a refreshing sour contrast that paired well. Portion Size: 2 skewers - small Truffle Crab Spring Rolls (4/5) - $14 Taste: Wood ear mushroom complemented the truffle crab flavour well. Crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. Portion Size: 2 spring rolls cut into 4 pieces - small Stir Fried Beef Rigatoni (3/5) - $21.95 Taste: I really enjoyed the beef in this dish, it was cooked medium rare, juicy, and flavourful with a hint of sweetness. The reason why two stars was taken away was because the rigatoni pasta was served quite dry. Portion Size: Entree for 1 person Saigon Luc Lac Steak (4/5) - $28.95 Taste: Steak was cooked quite well and tasted rich in flavour with the peppercorn sauce. The potato dauphinoise was flaky and buttery and the slaw salad pairing was light and refreshing! Portion Size: Entree for 1 person [Value for Money] The menu needs to be revisited - for the price point it felt like the portion sizes should have been bigger or the prices need to be lowered. Located in the old Mr Red Cafe spot, the decor is basically unchanged. They have a vegan pho ($18) on the menu, which prompted me to try it, and I added satay sauce ($1.90) to the broth The soup came out in under 10 minutes. The portion was decent, coming with gai lan, king oyster mushroom, and carrot, but with only 4 small cubes of fried tofu. The vermicelli portion was adequate. The broth was not that complex, especially compared to satay broths elsewhere in town -- it's actually undersalted. Not bad overall but definitely not one of the best vegan phos in town. And at $18, this is one of the more expensive phos around. Very kind service and pleasant environment. There are better pho places in town for vegan pho, especially for the price. Nothing will ever compare to Mr. Red's but I was open to liking this place. Nope. Everything I've tried has been terrible. Awful spring rolls - not the traditional Vietnamese ones. Bready with hardly any filling. Not gluten free. I'm personally not a fan of the mean pho but others may like it. But the vegan pho - fine broth, but only one stalk of green bock choy and 2 pieces of tofu. TWO! I couldn't believe it. You'd serve a meat pho with 10 pieces of meat but you serve me vegan pho where my protein is two tiny pieces? Just insulting. The only reason this review is not one star is because the service is ok and they are well meaning but the food is terrible, and a huge disappointment. read more

The food was excellent. The sizzling beef bahn mi platter was extremely unique and a modern twist on the traditional Bahn mi. My server was super nice. She accommodated every need I had. They charge for tap water. We came in as a group of 6, had food and ordered drinks. Asked for water and they said "no we aren't serving water tonight". When I saw other tables drinking water, I asked for water again. Then they said they can give it to us but it costs $0.50 per 250mL and there were no free refills... for tap water.
