Super nice staff. There was a confusion from my end, I did t understand the Japanese term for imitation crab in the black belt roll. I'm not a fan of imitation crab, I always swap it out for spicy tuna. I just ate the top salmon and avocado part and avoided the imitation crab part of the roll. Its a preference thing of mine. They offered to remake the roll for me but I felt awful because of the misunderstanding from the menu. They ended up comping that from my check. I really had a good experience here, everyone was nice, attentive and had great energy. I came with my friend who is pregnant so they accommodated us for ensuring her food was fully cooked. We were in the Coronado area of San Diego today. This restaurant was pretty busy during lunch (so be prepared to be patience if you come during peak lunch time). We ordered the Teriyaki Chicken bento box and a special order of their Tempura Roll add avocado & blue crab . Their other rolls that came out looked fresh & appetizing. The restaurant was pretty clean and the restrooms were decent. The server was pretty friendly and did her best to take care of her customers. They could use an extra server. I've eaten at Saiko no less than 30x. We frequently visited the north park location and, because my kids like it, we now drive over to Coronado. We've often celebrated birthdays and milestones there, as we tried to tonight. It's not uncommon to start your meal at Saiko with great, attentive service and then have it fall off a bit. Waiting for food. No servers checking on you for a while. Not uncommon. It usually comes around. The food is good and it usually ends well. We've visited so often that we are friendly with one of their best servers, JR. Love him. Tonight was a different story. It was SO BAD that the birthday girl was sitting at the table crying because she was hungry and in a hurry (after 2 hours) to go out with her friends to celebrate. It's ironic that the reservation confirmation that is sent says you only have the table for 90 minutes. If only... The service has gotten so much worse. Last few times have been bad. Literally, expect for nobody to look at you table for 45 minutes to 1 hour after you get your first round of drinks and appetizers. Complain to the manager and he will also ignore your table. He wears a suit jacket and fancy glasses but he's NOT a capable manager. His outfit is a facade. He lacks the ability to control the service and handle the customers. He hides and avoids. Probably a nice guy but not cut out for this position. Tonight was, Hands down, the worst service I've ever encountered in San Diego. And, the food wasn't great either. The tuna flight, which we've had a million times, was fishy and the cuts were off. Yes, the chefs specials are usually excellent as is the Saiko salmon and the tempura. But, not worth the dismissive approach to customer service, the long wait and the inconsistency in the quality. It was a great run but Saiko has jumped the shark. So many better experiences and much better food In San Diego. I'll never come back. PS: Love you Jr. Thanks for the memories. The service was super quick! My partner and I sat at the bar and the bartender was super nice and always checked on us. I didn't get his name but he was the best! We got the black belt roll, crown roll, and the grand roll. I'd really recommend the crown roll. The lychee drink was really good too. Great place for date night. read more

We made an reservation and when we arrived we were promptly walked to our reserved table. The waitress congratulated us on our wedding anniversary which was very thoughtful and treated us to a green tea ice cream. The imperial sushi was fantastic. The night of the swimming dead roll had a perfect touch of herb laid on top. Their nutmeg oatmilk speciality drink tasted wonderful but had a little too much ice in it. We had a great time! I have been here multiple times. I used to go more frequently when I lived close to the Coronado bridge because of the accessibility. I liked it a year and a half ago the multiple times I went, but this past week it wasn't as good. I got the Crown Roll which didn't have much flavor, salmon nigiri which wasn't the freshest and the rice was old and not cooked well. The miso soup was my favorite part of it. This sushi spot did not disappoint! First of all, I like to thank my guy in the front for kindly switching our outside seats to the bigger table. We had our dog and we felt so cramped in the two-seater corner. No one puts baby in the corner, or that's how the line goes in the movie (all jokes). Also, to our waitress too! When we asked our waitress questions, she was very detailed and good with her words. Already making our experience off to a great start! For drinks, we ordered the sake flights and accidentally the Italian water which actually turned out to be champagne lol it was okay but we preferred the sake. They tasted very good and again, the waitress was the one who provided us the recommendation. Really good with her descriptions! As for the food, everything tasted pretty good! The only thing I can criticize was the unagi (aka eel). It looked and tasted a little burnt. When I go to Japan, unagi is my utmost number one (いちばん) favorite food to eat especially at the Tsukiji market! Other than that, the tuna sashimi tasted great, and we devoured the sushi rolls! Anywho, I'm still giving a 5-star because the service was outstanding! This was our first time eating here and first impressions are always key to making a good experience! One of my favorite places to go! I have been eating here for 10+years! The only time it was not worth it was a 2-3 year period after covid.. I went a week ago, and the quality, service, and taste is back up to its old standard. The restaurant it self is clean and comfortable for a casual meal. Food was great. Most of the sushi I have eaten after one plate I would feel stuff but this place not only the food tastes awesome but doesn't make you feel bloated and heavy. The tuna roll was refreshing and light taste. The salmon nagiri was delicious and flavorful. The grand roll which is eel was amazing. The hint on winter taste because there was sweetness to it plus the char taste of the eel was good. I was hungry and forgot to take pictures but it was good. The waitress was nice and served us well. But the host didn't like much. I had reservation but I was late because of unforeseen circumstances, she made seems like our reservation was given away and saying they are fully booked while at that time, the place was barely packed and have plenty of open table. I was duped ............. my wife ordered the popular Crown Roll at Saiko Sushi, and this beef and potato guy really liked it. But I'll get back to that. This restaurant is located on the north end of the Island, just catty corner from the Coronado Ferry Landing. It's easy to tell that locals frequent this restaurant by the familiarity of the guests and the amount of togo orders that we saw picked up. The staff was friendly but the food prep was very slow. We started with the Edamame. This had the expected amount of salt and oil. As you can see in my pic there are chunks of garlic. I could sorta taste the garlic, my wife believe there was tons: we agree to disagree on garlic. We then went to the appetizer Tempura Shrimp. As you can see in my pic these were thin, elongated shrimp. The tempura batter was light and airy. But the sauces: reddish one was a sweet and heat type and the darker was a soy based sauce. This soy based sauce isn't just soy: interestingly its thinner but has a savory depth and a bit of complexity. We used this with our rolls. Speaking of which, the Crown Roll is a fav here. The predominant ingredients are the spicy tuna, spicy garlic aioli and the crispy shallot. I didn't think spicy raw tuna would be on my list of must haves, but this was a good Roll. Overall the spiciness was spot on - plenty of kick and after heat, yet it didn't overpower the taste of the fish. The crunch of the crispy shallots and tempura shrimp complimented the softness of the fish and rice. This was a well-balanced Roll. We followed this with the Shogun Roll. This was also good, but following the Crown Roll was a bit lackluster. (Note to self: reverse the order of eating these Rolls.) This is a subtle Roll with smoked ginger emulsion being milder. We will be coming back. There is also another location in San Diego. read more

Found this place for lunch on Yelp and decided to give it a try for lunch. We came on a Friday afternoon and plenty of seating in the restaurant. We were seated quickly and placed our order soon after. We got the sashimi, two rolls and the edamame. We popped in on a weekday afternoon. Enjoyed some brussel sprouts, happy hour rolls and fresh fish, including the tuna flight. The rolls were great, but it was the the fresh nigiri that shined! The tuna flight was terrific! Brussels sprouts were the current vegetable offering, and were outstanding. I don't normally think brussels sprouts when I go for sushi, but if available, I'll be ordering them every time. In summary, I don't find the lunch specials or happy hour to be that exciting unless you want cocktails, but prices are moderate, service outstanding, and the fish is fresh! Incredibly fresh and delicious sushi! My gf raved about this place and after dining here, I concur! We stopped by for lunch on a Wednesday and were able to snag a table outside to enjoy the sunshine and fresh air. They open at 11:30 and by 12:00 all outdoor tables were taken. We started with arnold palmers that were a little bitter, but the fresh cucumber water definitely made up for the lackluster taste. For apps, we had the Saiko edamame that was extremely delicious! If you like spice and fried garlic, you will be obsessed. We also had the karaage steamed bun that was delish, but I was disappointed that the karaage was only available in a bun as it is normally sold as it without the bun. Only one comes per order so for the amount of food we ordered, splitting one was perfect. Our mains consisted of the crown and ace roll. Both were fab, but the crown roll was the definite winner. The next time I visit, nigiri/sashimi are in my future. I ordered the blood orange chicken to go and OMG, I am not a huge fan of orange chicken to begin with, but if they all tasted like Saiko's, I would be in heaven. Had high hopes but it was not to be. Started off with gyoza. It is an old favorite and is one thing I use to compare these types of places. Sadly, it was dry and without much flavor. The inside was cool which I found off putting especially for the fried variant. Ordered tuna and salmon sashimi and it was very good. Cut just right and perfect temperature. Ordered 2 different t rolls and that is where it came to a stop for me. They layered on the sauces so heavy that you had no idea what you were eating. Heavy spicy mayo...reminded me of those all you can eat places where they either make the rolls 80% rice or hide the roll under sauces. I watched the table next to me and their rolls were as equally as slathered. Had a serving of calamari which was okay but it was served with the same heavy mayo sauce. Must get it by the 55 gallon drum. The server was attentive and super nice and the place was orderly and presented well. Indoor and outdoor seating available. Be prepared to sit very close to those around you. They pack you in pretty tight. Bottom line: If you want authentic sushi then this isn't the place. If you want kid friendly and palate neutral food then this will work fine. read more

I wish I had gotten pics but I was so hungry I didn't get a chance to snap any. The sushi was so good! The restaurant had a really chill and down to earth ambiance as well. My friend and I shared the Saiko tempura (mixed), the Kingpin roll (8) and the Grand roll (8). I really like the Grand roll, the goat cheese and mango added a nice flavor to it that wasn't overpowering. The Kingpin was my second favorite, the yuzu was noticeable but again, not overwhelming so it let each ingredient shine. It also wasn't really all that spicy. Customer service was great too!
