Coronado island sushi bar and grill Saiko Sushi is serving creative, local fish, rolls, drinks, and other Japanese fare. AMBIANCE Modern, day-lit, and just a little quirky with homage to Godzilla and retro Japanese art. SERVICE Friendly, helpful, knowledgeable, attentive FOOD 5/5 Shrimp Yakitori: tenderly grilled on a skewer, with a delicate yet delightfully fragrant tandoori marinade. 4.5/5 Saiko Roll: salmon, yellowtail, Kani Kama (imitation crab meat) wrapped in sushi form, then tempura fried, and served with wasabi aioli and an almost gel-like caramelized soy sauce 4/5 Spicy Opah Roll: subtly spicy

I got reservations for a Friday night, we got there a little and the host kindly was able to seat us right away. Just in time for us to still make Happy Hour. The happy hour portions are huge and so affordable. I suggest going hungry. We ordered the Saiko edamame, spicy opa roll, champ roll and a salmon avocado roll. All delicious. For desert we got the PB mocha cheesecake. So delicious and decadent. It's a small restaurant but they really make it work. The full windows in the front makes for great lighting. A wonderful time really

In Coronado for work. Stopped in for dinner. Had the sesame seasoned edamame, a crown roll and a tempura ice cream sandwich. I would order the roll again but not the other two. Service was great. Place is small but we never felt rushed.

Saiko is a gem on Coronado island. Their sushi is one of the best places I have had the pleasure of dining at. All their cuts are so fresh and they have a lot of awesome daily specials that have some unique cuts of fish and rolls. The service here is always on point but it never hurts to make a reservation as it is a small place. The restaurant is very cozy but modern.

Food was good but in a place this small it shouldn't take 30 minutes to get your first drink. The food beat the drinks to the table.

We were first to enter and it was clear immediately that omakase is this restaurants institution; delicate lighting that highlighted the bar that separated diner and chef, clean lines everywhere, and just overall a beautiful place. The theme of Sushi MARU is truly attention to detail, and that extends from arrival, to service, to, of course, the food. Staff were incredibly attentive and easy to talk to, including the chefs. The food, I will comment on just generally as the menu is constantly changing (as is the case with many omakase): each dish was composed of pieces that complemented each other well and created a cohesive flavor pallette. Each nigiri was artfully prepared that emphased the quality and cut of the fish, and were complemented by flavors to further highlight that. The flow of the evening was non-traditional omakase, but it felt perfect. Price ($180pp) is not for the faint of heart, but is cheaper than others I've seen. Would absolutely visit again for a special occasion!

This is one of the OG sushi spots in San Diego, and I've been coming here on and off for decades…read more It had been quite a few years since my last visit, though. With so many new sushi restaurants opening around town, it's a little out of the way for us, and honestly, I had almost forgotten about it. I'm so glad we decided to come back because it's every bit as good as I remembered. I made a reservation for the sushi bar, which is always my favorite place to sit at a traditional sushi restaurant. Instead of ordering my usual rolls, I decided to splurge on the Chef's Choice nigiri. I also asked the chef to serve each piece one at a time rather than bringing everything out at once. I love taking my time, enjoying each bite, and watching the chefs work, which is another reason I prefer sitting at the counter. The Chef's Choice was absolutely worth it. Every piece was incredibly fresh and beautifully prepared. My favorite was the aged toro, which had been aged for three months. It had such a rich, buttery flavor and completely melted in my mouth. My husband ordered a few specialty rolls, and he was very happy with both the quality and the generous portions. I also upgraded my regular miso soup to the clam miso soup, and I'm so glad I did. The broth was delicate and flavorful without being overly salty, and the clams added a wonderful sweetness. Even though I was already pretty full, I couldn't resist ordering three pieces of tempura after seeing them come out for another customer. I rarely order tempura in the U.S. because it's often heavily battered, when authentic Japanese tempura should be light, crisp, and delicate. If you've ever been to a dedicated tempura restaurant in Japan, you know exactly what I mean. This tempura was surprisingly close to what you'd find in Japan--light, airy, and perfectly crispy without feeling greasy. For dessert, we shared the green tea Basque cheesecake. It leaned a little on the dry side, but I still really enjoyed it because the matcha flavor was rich, bold, and not overly sweet. We also had a chance to chat with Akira-san behind the sushi bar, which made the evening even more enjoyable. The hospitality and attention to detail really reminded me why I've always loved this place. With so many trendy and expensive sushi restaurants in San Diego these days, this restaurant continues to stand the test of time. The quality of the fish is outstanding, the atmosphere is authentic, and I honestly think the prices are very reasonable for what you get. It's a classic for a reason, and I'll definitely be making the drive back more often.

There was no wait here but parking was a nightmare and there is almost no street parking right around the restaurant which is near the trolley tracks. I recalled coming here for a light dinner with my husband many years ago and thinking it was good, but expensive. I asked if they had Japanese soda for my daughter because it was not on the menu, and they said no, but after we came back from the bathroom the host had found one for us. They gave us chopstick helpers and were very nice. We ordered braised pork belly as an app and wagyu nigiri, albacore, hamachi, salmon belly, 2 salmons, and unagi. I think that was all. They nicely split the order so half had no wasabi for the kid. They were very considerate and I appreciated it. The food however took a while to come out. The braised pork belly was ok, but the fat had not rendered as well as at some other places so we ate around it. The flavor was good though. The hamachi was probably the best item-tender and tasty. The albacore was standard and a generous piece, but the salmon was a bit tough and my kid who usually inhales salmon tasted and then left the salmon. The wagyu had good flavor but was surprisingly chewy. For $26 I would expect it to melt in your mouth but it was not easy to bite through. The eel was very tender but had a weird taste, and was disappointing. I found myself chewing on a scale from maybe the salmon and was overall underwhelmed by the food. The bill for a soda and the sushi came to almost $150 after tax and tip for me and a 6-year old. Usually my husband and I and my kid go to places with better quality and pay the same price for the three of us. Will not be back.

The reviews here say the service is friendly and good and they are right! Jenny looked after us and we both really liked her! Vibrant and friendly. Mixed drinks were ok. I wasn't thrilled with my watermelon one (I forget the name) but the wine i had after was excellent. For dinner I had the smoked pork chop and I have to say, it was a little odd. Ive never had meat or pork especially that was so soft and mushy? I mean I kinda liked it but it was just so weird. I was trying to figure out how they did that because usually pork has a nice chew to it. You could eat this with no teeth and thats no exaggeration. The sauce kinda overpowers the nice smoked pork flavor. The rice was amazing- made with sesame oil or something. My wife had the salmon and loved it. Huge dish too. Oh their ceasar salad has the big ancovy fishes on top - not my favorite but some places do this. Just FYI. Some other review mentioned it looked like a concrete bunker with flowers. Ha I can see that but we both thought the place was cute! Very loud though! Concrete walls and stone bar wall - even when it wasn't busy its hard to hear your friends. So I don't know. I'd go back maybe?
