I just realized St. Louis Drive in has a okazuya side. It's on the left of the drive in. Food and service is excellent. Gotta go early because they sell out of some stuff fast. They are open Wednesday - Saturday 7am-1pm or until the food runs out. That day we got there around 11:00 and a lot of stuff was gone. L-O-V-E the food. [FOOD] My usual order when they are not busy is Chow Funn, Fried Chicken, Hash, 2 Plain Musubis drizzled with Teri sauce, and Mac Salad. Love the simple taste of the CHOW FUNN which makes it a must get for me. From the great texture of the noodles to the not so much vegetables it's definitely broke da mouth. Though lately when I no like think or am in rush then I just get "A" which consists of Sushi, Musubi, Chowfun, Chicken, Luncheon Meat, Potato, Shrimp, and Fish since it has most of the stuff on their menu. Just FYI the mac salad and namasu is stored in the refrigerator. [COVID-19] I'm definitely a fan of their safety procedures such as requiring masks, limiting the amount of customers allowed inside to order, social distancing of customers outside waiting in line, etc. [PARKING] This is one of those places that if I see it open and there is parking then I stop. Wanted a quick bite to eat so decided to go to St.Louis drive inn but there was a long line. So I went next door to St.Louis Delicatessen. Of course not to much selection because I got there like about 12:30pm and their selection wasn't much left . As you know for Okazuya you need to go early. I ordered their Maki sushi, shrimp tempura and fried chicken. I liked their chicken it was moist and crispy ,shrimp tempura was ok more on the battered side and the Maki sushi was ok. I came back recently 3/17/23 St.Patrick's Day to pick up some goodies. Still good homey mom and pop take out okazuya bentos that I enjoy. Prices have gone up slightly, and there's a charge for each container that is used. Inflation, it's everywhere! I still enjoy getting my okazuya fix from this place. It's a local family owned business, and nowadays, not too many young generations help or take over the business as the elders retire. I love the nostalgia. This place serves up the nostalgia to the max.. I grew up on okazuyas and this was one of them.. some of my favorites are as follows Cone sushi- super tasty the rice has a nice consistency and the sushi itself is massive. Any of the tempuras you can't go wrong Teri Beef is delicious tangy sweet and salty all in one. Chow fun: it does have a different texture then what some people would think it's a little more wet they probably cook it in broth which I feel I get hints of chicken broth. But none the less super tasty. My all time favorite Corned Beef Hash patties if you love corned beef hash you cannot pass these up they're simply outstanding. I encourage you if you're in the area check this place out it's typical okazu hours so they usually close at like 1pm maybe a little later and a heads up they do only accept cash. read more

This is maybe my favorite place of all time. I've been coming here for years and years. I just went there last week after a long time and I think it's just cuz I never have cash on me. When I really need to eat there I'll go get cash first. The food is awesome. Gotta have chow fun and the tofu. Seems the chow fun noodles are different but still good. I gotta have the tofu. And I think the chicken is the best. Better than Zippy's! Sorry and that's only my opinion. The maki sushi is amazing. Musubis are perfect. Family owned and run, this Okinawan okazuya offers old school favorites with bolder flavors and drawing from different cultural backgrounds within plantation villages. Translated, it's a hodge podge of Asian-ish food. See odds and ends for their best. Maki sushi - Sold out. Inari (AKA cone sushi) - large but loosely packed, sweet, well seasoned age cone, slightly too wet. Rice is sweeter than most and wet with slivers of pickled carrot. Matches the oily food but not the best. Konbu maki (seasoned seaweed wrapped pork)- Not offered. Fried chicken - Very well seasoned bone in thigh. Sat coated in flour before being fried. Still crisp on the outside at room temp, moist on the inside. Tempura - Slightly crispy on the outside, yellow (food coloring added), giant oily bready dough balls surrounding shrimp and veg (carrot and green bean mix). Well seasoned and not bitter from the baking powder. Not the best. Odds and ends - Very good nishime. Simple, less sweet but deeply flavored with dashi and soy sauce, well simmered daikon, carrot, and sheets of konbu. Good long rice (Korean japchae minus uhhh everything but the seasoned long rice). Old school solid chow fun. Somewhat oily, slightly overcooked then wok fried noodles seasoned with salt and white pepper and a few slivers of carrot and beans. Great boiled shoyu chicken. Sweeter than most, skin on bone in thighs. Real fried luncheon meat (not Spam). Note: Cash only. No nonsense but friendly local service. Prices in line. Unfortunately you should get here earlier than later since they sell out of things quickly. Parking is a little limited and there's usually a line! But it's fast and straightforward! One of my favorite okazuya to go to. I've been going here for 35+ years back when I went to St. Louis HS (do the math lol). I remember grandma and grandpa used to run the place. She would always take care of the students. Whether it was hooking us up with extras or matching our portion to us not the money. St. Louis deli isn't your fancy food place but rather an old school okazuya. The food is very tasty and good. Some of the items are unique and can only be found there: shoyu tofu, chow fun and kombu just to name a few. Not saying that other okazuya don't carry those items it the taste that separates them from others. The only bad thing is the parking. It's limited and now with corona virus there is even less parking. I have had to wait it out elsewhere then come back later. Since I don't live near here, I try to go there whenever I have a chance. Kinda sad. This was my Saturday morning go to place. I used to come every Saturday with the exception being when they were closed. The former owner took a lot of time off. Wish him only the best in his retirement. Similar to the drive inn side service is really friendly and make you feel your business is valued. However, it just takes way too long. I had hoped to go yesterday but when I saw 5-6 people waiting at 6:50 am -10 minutes before they opened - I didn't stop because I knew that meant I'd be waiting 30-45 minutes in line. Last time I was here the lady in back of me stopped by to pick up food for her husband. She tried. Heard her calling someone to say she'd be late for her appointment because it was taking longer than she expected. After waiting about 30 minutes she ended up leaving which was unfortunate because it was me, then her, then about 5 other people in line. I felt sad for her. I hope they will realize they will be losing a lot of loyal customers because of how long you have to wait. Namasu? Nishime? The one with the potatoes and carrots in the shoyu style sauce? What is that thing called?! As I'm waiting in line at St. Louis Drive-In, I see this door. You know, the screen door that you see which leads into an apartment. So, being niele, I look closer and see what looks like a counter area with a hot line. Hmmm. I was fooled into thinking this was part of St. Louis Drive-In, maybe the employee entrance or a catering entrance? Yes, being niele, I had to check it out. After walking in, I spocked all the goodies, including musubis, corned beef hash patties and Namasu! Or was it Nishime? So I took a chance and asked the friendly lady there how much for an order of Namasu, while pointing to the potatoes and carrots in the shoyu sauce thingie. She laughed and asked if I was talking about the Nishime. I pointed again and she confirmed it was indeed Nishime! $5.00 for a 16 ounce container, which to me was a bargain! Definitely can't get this stuff on Maui for that price! So I ordered a container so I can enjoy it with my Teriyaki Style Mochiko Chicken from next door! This place is a hidden gem, for sure! Had I known it was here, I would have visited more often. They share the same parking lot as St. Louis Drive-In and are literally to the left side of the order window. And yes, their Nishime was delicious and definitely worth the price! And Yes, if you like delicious Nishime, check this place out. The pricing hasn't changed since my last review in 2012! Get there early to ensure that they have all of their delicious Okazuya items. For about $3, I recommend ordering 1/2 chicken long rice and a piece of fried chicken. Crispy skin, chicken thigh, moist on the inside. The chicken long rice is the darker, thicker noodles (compared to the Hawaiian style). Very tasty, and not too salty. This is the only place that doesn't use spam for their fried luncheon meat, it tastes more like a canned ham, much leaner and "real" meat. Excellent musubis, plan with ume or nori wrapped. Another nice quality about this okazuya, is the fact that they always have the same assortment: fried chicken, shoyu chicken, nishime, luncheon meat, hot dog, shrimp, vegetable, and potato tempura, chow funn, long rice, and tofu. The only item that I don't like is their shrimp tempura, because of the thick batter that they use. I prefer the traditional panko shrimp tempura. Their vegetable tempura is the best on the island. It's been a long time since I ate from here ... maybe when I was still just a kid. But lately, every time I drive by, there's always a line. Business must be good! I ordered the chow funn, cone sushi, and fried chicken. Chow funn was a little bland to me but good enough. Cone sushi had a nice light vinegar sushi rice which I liked. The winner is the fried chicken. It's moist on the inside, crisp on the outside, and tasted great. On a really busy day, parking is slim pickings. I've seem some people park across the street where L&L is and walk over. I just circled the block a few times until a parking spot opened up. The Musubi, potato cake and chow fun were good. The fried chicken was too salty for me though the taste was good. The battered fish and shrimp were too doughy for me. I would rather have the lighter tempura batter. The cone sushi was a little tangy from the vinegar and I would like it sweeter instead. Overall the food was ok. The two women at the counter are very efficient were filling the orders quickly. The parking lot can get filled pretty quickly around lunch time but at 10:30am it wasn't bad. I really like this okazuya. It is so fun to see what they have and pick out a fantastic (large) meal. There isn't much of a seating area, just one table outside.....it's pretty much just take out. Sometimes there is a line, but it is worth the wait....and it goes pretty fast. Today was a good day: fried chicken, chow fun (of course), cone sushi, tempura shrimp, and nishime. The fried chicken was very good. Flavor was amazing, and the skin was crispy. As always, the meat was soft and juicy. The chow fun is very good here (my wifes favorite). Cooked right, good flavor, and just the right consistency to the noodles. The cone sushi is great because it has a sweetness to it. Consumption time: 1.2 seconds. The shrimp tempura has a heavier batter than you would expect. Definitely a thicker, bread-ier type coating than panko, but it's tasty. The best part, believe it or not, was the nishime. Seaweed mixed with daikon makes for the perfect combination of textures.
