I don't remember how I found out about Toshi's Delicatessen, but I knew that I would have to visit this old school okazuya because it's been around for a while. There are a few free stalls for parking right in the front. I was driving in the wrong direction, so I wasn't able to park there. Plus, there's no sign to indicate where the business is. It's truly a hidden treasure! Service is friendly and down to earth. Just answer: Chopstick or fork? Plain musubi or with nori? And remember that it's a cash only environment. Comfort food was delicious! I got the last piece of salmon! The Hamburger patty had a teriyaki flavor. The chow funn was surprisingly really tasty! The nori musubi was nostalgic. Old school delicatessen located right in the heart of Kalihi. I bet youve driven past it as the location itself doesnt stand out, blends in with the environment but its neon sign against the early 5 AM hours should entice you to stop. Simply pick your starchs, sides, meats to be put on a plate and wrapped for take out. Charged per serving, everything was fairly priced. Good size portions that fill you up for less than 10$. Parking is on the street or in the residential and then you walk. Just watch for your surroundings. read more

Many people have been bragging about this place so I thought I would stop by. The first time I went I could not find it cause it was closed and there was no sign. I then went again and got there at about 11 am and they were already sold out of their food. I really got curious now as I was standing there and saw some people still coming by to buy what ever was left over. Today I came early and bought chowfun & bbq chicken & eggroll and boy was I surprised. The taste was out of this world. The chowfun really had a taste from each of my bite that was so good. The eggroll had a slight sweetness from each bite and blew my mouth and mind. The bbq chicken was moist and soft and I would really taste the quality as it was so good. Solid okazuya with the friendliest service and parking right in front. The baked chicken is my favorite. The teri hamburger and egg are both very sweet and flavorful. And I also like the hash and chow fun. Not a huge selection, but you don't need one when everything you have is good :) We usually drop by around 7am for takeout and there will be a steady stream of folks but not a flood, e.g., 1 or 2 people ahead of us and then another 1 or 2 behind by the time we leave. read more

Toshi's! One of those old school, hole-in-the-wall okazuya places and a favorite among my coworkers. This place has that real family business appeal to it. The food is displayed in the window and there are parking stalls right off of King Street in front of the entrance. Most importantly, the food is good! I especially like the chow fun and baked chicken. The noodles are a bit on the sweet side (not a bad thing) and the chicken is nicely browned which a welcomed change from standard fried chicken. Also very good are the teri hamburger, the egg, and the shoyu chicken. The gentleman that works here is very nice and friendly. Cash only, and be careful if when backing out of the parking stalls onto King Street. The food comes on paper plates and is wrapped in butcher's paper. Always on my Radar finally got to try um. They open at 4:45am so I stopped by before work and I ordered egg omelette, Teri burger, hash, chow fun and musubi. For $13.95 well worth it cash only and I talked to the owner they actually close at 10:00am before they used to close @ 12n. Also they are close Saturday,Sunday and Monday . The selection has a lot of variety to choose from especially they offer lots of fish entrees. From Saba, ahi, Salmon the only down fall I can see is that they don't sell any tempura items. My go to's are the fried chicken, chow fun, teri hamburger, and the shoyu chicken. I've tried quite a few other items but those are my go to's. Arrived at 7 a.m. to find only plain rice triangles, corned beef hash, tamagoyaki, shoyu chicken, hamburger patty, and a few pieces of saba. All out of chow fun for the time being; however, male worker informed me if I wanted fresh chow fun, wait time is 15 mins. I politely declined because I wanted to arrive early at work. Corned beef hash: More hash than corned beef. So soft. Great from toddlers to elderly to enjoy. Tasty! Tamagoyaki: That's the biggest piece I've ever come across at okazuya or delicatessen. Perfect with diced spam and green onions. Yummy! Must have! Shoyu chicken: Moist, tender, perfectly cooked, and not salty. Haven't had this in years. Brought back fond childhood memories. Hamburger patty: Sweet and salty contrast of sauce for homemade, thick hamburger with minced onions. Love the courteous customer service from gentleman and origami style folding of white thick paper. Maybe about 5 spaces depending on the size of the vehicle. Small establishment, I think 4-5 people can line up inside if I remember correctly when I went the last time. Order my usual...egg omelette, hash, Teri hamburger, hotdog and salad. My favorites are the egg omelette, hash and salad. The egg omelette is alittle on the sweet side but not overly sweet. The hash is larger, softer and not as dense as the other places. I think the salad has alittle sweetness too and not a lot of mayonnaise just the right amount. I've had everything they make and it's all delicious but I stick with my favorites unless ordering for family. read more

Its run by a japanese grandma and her middle aged son. Always friendly, delicious, everything is homemade and very cozy old style Hawaii vibes. There is no dine in, no seating. Because they do everything themselves they can run out by midmorning due to its popularity! The parking is drive-up slanted stalls right off the main road so parking can be linited and backing up into traffic can be tough. The okazuya items are ala carte and put on paper plates wrapped in paper. They offer chilled canned drinks and japanese potato/mac salad and namasu (pickled carrot radish cucumber) they put in mini trays wrapped in paper and foil to keep chill. The items can be seen by the huge picture window by the screen door. They don't use MSG because I'm never thirsty but the food is so flavorful! My faves are the tamago (which has some mest and veggie bits but still sweet), hotdog, teri patty, potato hash, shoyu chicken (so juicy and crisp skin!), namasu, potato mac salad and classic nori musubi! LP from Thursday, 5/12. Talk about a nostalgic moment especially since I haven't been here in years. I've been a patron here since elementary school and used to stop by almost every a.m. when I was in high school. My fave was the teriyaki hamburger, chow fun and rice. Grew up going to this place! Food is always Ono and very consistent. Sad to say that they don't serve the shoyu long rice anymore as it was one of my favorite things there!! I drive all the way from Kapolei to get their food and it's well worth the drive. The guy is very nice and often throws in a piece of chicken because i tell him to keep the change. Wrapping skills on point to! If you have ever been there you know how good he is at wrapping the plates lol, just brings back memories as a kid when i went with my parents to get food there. The two sisters and son still run the place. The food is exceptional, there Fried Chicken, BBQ Hamburger , Chow Fun and the best Mac salad. Talking to the owner, they're planning to close sometime next year. Open since 1966. Parking is limited 4-stalls in front of restaurant. Located across the Post Office. Pros: Hot chow fun with some veges Namasu crunchy and sweet Salad with egg and potato chunks Cons: Prices not cheap Comments: Parking in front on the low rise sidewalk which one can park diagonally but be careful when reversing as you can't see the traffic. There's a line inside and outside but the obasans are working quickly and we have time to decide what to get. It is not cheap but the quality is there with lots of ingredients. I like the paper wraps and rubber bands as old Hawaii is still here. Cash only and put it in the paper plate as it reads. To complete the ambience, the staff are speaking a little in dialect to each other and the requisite 'yusho' when lifting the heavy container. The continuing mission, find Oahu's best okazuya. Part of the fast disappearing old guard. Musubis made with a chawan and the weathered, wrinkled hands of a septuagenarian. Mismatched, chipped plates holding small piles of okazuya favorites; boiled shoyu chicken, hand formed teriyaki burgers and corned beef hash, shoyu hotdogs, thick omelets all sat on old, wooden shelves, its finish long gone. The best by modern okazuya standards? No. It's not about that at Toshi's. Maki sushi - None. Fried chicken - Nada. Tempura - Nope. Konbu maki - Denied. Inari (AKA cone sushi) - Not to sweet but very well seasoned age cone. Well seasoned simple rice inside with bits of carrot. Solid. Musubi - hand made with salt water seasoning only on the outside. Chewy nori (laver) covers most of the outside. Homemade, old school perfection. Odds and ends - Rubbery teri burger with fillers and bound by egg that exudes with sweet ginger soy from the inside out. Good braised shoyu chicken thighs with the typical 1:1 (sugar:soy) seasoning. Excellent rolled omelet with green onions and what taste like cut up hotdog inside. Very potato filled hash but fried well. Overcooked, but well seasoned floured and fried fish. Good, kinda oily chow fun (MSG and pepper seasoned with carrots, green onions, and choi sum mixed in). All old school correct and good eats! Very friendly service. Okay, foolish me, I thought Toshi's closed down for some reason and there's no sign there anymore! It's open for business, folks! Granted, it's open only 4 days, Tuesday to Friday, but it's still open! We love the corn beef hash, teriyaki chicken, teriyaki burger, egg omelet roll, and when they actually had it, the fish cake (which has been discontinued). It's a little mom and pop okazuya in a hole-in-the-wall store (the best finds) in Kalihi with an efficient guy helping to organize your orders, and two little Japanese ladies in the back cooking up our favorite okazuya selections. My All Time Favorite Okazuya!!! When my kids were little and we lived in Kalihi, we discovered it. It's been about 20 years we've been going there. Anytime I'm in the area, I go and eat there. The chow fun noodles is the best I've ever had. Everything there is OnO. I usually get the hash, egg omelet, spam and nori musubi. The family is always polite and the food consistent. First time coming here--- wanted to try a different okazuya. Arrived right when they opened so there was no wait. Convenient parking right in front. This is like a traditional okazuya with limited selections displayed on plates in their front window-- I loved it. I went with noodles, a rice musubi, a hot dog, two pieces of spam, egg, and a corned beef hash patty. The patty was the winner but everything was good/great. Toshi's Delicatessen is old school no doubt. Oldsters like me cherish these culinary institutions because they remind me of younger times when eating out was a special treat and food was tasty, consistent and affordable. I visited Toshi's around 9:30 am on a weekday and surprisingly scored a coveted parking space right in front of the deli's plate glass showcasing their daily offerings. Line was moderate but boy was it warm inside. One of the sisters was staffing the counter while the other managed the kitchen. You must be patient as this is not fast food and the older Japanese lady runs on her own tempo. Couple in front of us looked like they were new to Toshi's and they were getting worried as the 2 ladies in front of us ordered 5 plates and the okazu started looking like slim pickings. I reassured them that it was still early in the day as they didn't close until noon. I called out to the obachan and asked if more egg omelet, teri hamburger and corned beef hash was coming out and within 2 minutes 3 stacked plates of egg, hash and hamburger were brought out from the kitchen. 3 guys behind me must have been regulars and they were chuckling among themselves. Bottom line? It took around 25 minutes to get my 3 plates but it was worth it. The shoyu chicken was tender and well marinated, the teri burgers were beefy, hash was fine (not much corned beef but very typical local-style okazuya corned beef hash), hot dog was a big fat dog, and the musubi looked like an unstructured rice ball-just rice, no nori and no ume. The 3 plates were all very generous servings and the bill came out to $30. Worth it? Well, Toshi's does not have the wide selection and speedy service like Gulick Delicatessen but if you're in the mood for simple local-style okazu from the 50s, 60s, 70s Toshi's will not disappoint. I just started a new job in the Kalihi neighborhood and one of my coworkers discovered my love of okazuya. She mentioned a very popular place called Toshi's Delicatessen. Now, whenever I forget to bring home lunch (which is about 90% of the time), I thank the food gods that she told me about this place. It is less than a 10 minute walk from work and I can get a full plate of food for less than $10. That is what I call a deal! I have tried their teriyaki burger, chow funn, cone sushi, corned beef hash patty, and chop jae. It is all delicious. The flavors remind me of a home cooked meal, just like grandma used to make. If the flavors didn't make me a fan, the portion size would. The burgers are huge! I would say they have to be at least 1 inch thick and the size of my palm. When he kept telling me to order first, I knew he didn't really want anything there, so we moseyed on out. At Toshi's we parked right in front. Parking is kind of tight. Luckily there was a nice man there who helped direct me so I didn't hit anything. Me and my horrible depth perception. My dad was disappointed that they were already out of fried chicken. He loves his fried chicken,especially Popeye's. Eeeew. Next time we will come earlier, so there will be a wider selection. Super friendly staff led by a grandma that really appreciates your business. They do a very careful job at wrapping everything up for you to, so it won't spill. I ended up choosing my go to delicatessen food, hash patty, along with egg, teri burger, and two rice balls. I also got the namasu too. The namasu was a definite stand out, and I would totally recommend it. The taste perfectly complimented the taste of the other dishes. The hash patty had a little more potato in it than I would have liked. I would get the teri burger and egg again, especially the egg. I remember coming here when both were much younger, and when the aunty in the front had rapid fiyah fingah skillz on the adding machine! Tack tack tack tack tack! Aunty had some mad adding machine skillz! Lol Today, albiet a little slower on the adding machine, that same aunty can still be seen helping customers. I watched her as she gingerly wrapped up each plate with the classic butcher's paper and a rubberband around it to keep your napkin and chopsticks in place. Aww...so cute. Here you'll find eats like shoyu chicken, hash patties, long rice, okazuya style chow fun, hot dogs, and musubis just to name a few. But whenever I come here, I always get the regular or teri hamburger, eggs, and long rice. Kinda pricey I'll admit, but the hamburgers are thick and the eggs are some big bumbucha sized omelettes or something. I dunno, but it's ono! Although easy to miss, you've probably passed Toshi's hundreds of times before. They're located near the Kapalama Post Office on N. King St. across from O' Sung Auto Body & Paint.
