Came here for lunch on a Tuesday around noon. A group of 6 of us were able to be seated immediately. Lots of free parking in front of the building. The decor inside is cute. The menu has so many options, it was very hard to decide what to order. So many sushi options, noodle and rice dishes. I got the the chicken Yakisoba and split the Rock and Roll sushi roll. The noodle dish was very tasty and came with side of soup. The portions were filling but not too much food for ~$11. The Rock and Roll sushi was very tasty with 4 large sushi rolls. We came here a few years ago and it was quite good. Now, however, the experience was quite disappointing: 1. First, they charge extra for credit card fees but never inform you once you speak with them on the phone 2. Second, while ordering desert, they tell you all of a sudden that they have 2 hour limit per table also without informing us of that over the phone. 3. Food itself: they told us of their best steak - the rib eye steak that was supposed to be "juicy" and "tender". When they cooked it, it was full of fat with barely any edible meat. You would expect superior quality for $53 per portion. Other food was pretty good, but this was unacceptable! 4. Other: they charge $20 for each open bottle of wine and extra if people share any of the entrees. They did say over the phone about the open bottle of wine but overall restrictions and extra charges just add up to be ridiculous. read more

I've eaten at Sakai numerous times and all have been just like tonight. The service is great, the sushi is wonderful- fresh and a great selection. Beer on tap, wine is nice, kids meals are quick and well thought out. It's the best sushi in the entire Dayton area, hands down! And it's 1/2 the cost of those expensive sushi bars to the south. I'd highly recommend Sakai! Tonight was our boys night- me, my son and grandson. My grandson picks the restaurant and he picked Sakai. I ordered sushi - spicy tuna and a California roll. My son ordered sushi and my grandson did the children's meal. We bashed. Sushi was all fresh and delicious. Service fast and accurate. We love Sakai. First time dining here, the sign outside and on the door calls out hibachi which is why we chose this restaurant. The hibachi area was unlit and we were seated at a booth. So I was already disappointed but I understand manpower may be an issue. The food tasted fine but our meat was all cold and no refills were provided. The lead up - Sakai is located on the west side of Troy. It's in a shopping center with plenty of parking and can be easily found from 41. The walk in - fountains flowing and soft playing music we entered. All staff (including sushi chefs) greeted us and quickly sat us. The menu/drinks - the menu is huge and somewhat confusing. There are 2 separate parts of the restaurant. One for casual dining (what we normally do) and other for hibachi. The hibachi is less than exciting compared to others I've been to but this review is for the sushi. O let's talk about the sushi! There are two different sushi menus. One being really reasonably priced from 4-8 dollars per roll. (Featuring more basic yet delicious rolls) and the other menu is almost twice as expensive yet the rolls are huge, artist, and mouth watering. Grub time - I order the carribean roll, dream roll, and spicy tuna. There is something about this place that just beats other sushi spots. Maybe the rice, maybe it's the fresh fish used. You never get a piece that has the dreaded (yucky fish smell). It's always consistent with nice flavors and new and exciting sushi specials! The service- incredibly fast, friendly, and spot on. Can't ask for more. The verdict- Sakai is a great restaurant that every sushi connoisseur need to try. Priced with other sushi joints it won't break your wallet. I ordered $21.35 in food and I've never felt more ripped off. The portions were so small that I expected her to hand me another bag with the rest of my food. A small cup of soup was $2.50 and the other $17.85 was less than a cups worth of rice and a handful of salmon. What's worse is they had the nerve to tack on a $1 "convenience fee" when I called it in and drove there to pick it up. Decent food, but too pricey for the size of the portions given - inflation or no inflation. I won't be eating here again unless they eventually reduce their prices. read more

I grew up eating a lot of Chinese food. I loved Chinese food, however I had never eaten Japanese. The typical American has the very narrow-minded idea that all Japanese cuisine is sushi, but this is very wrong. I fit myself into this category many years ago. After a great deal of education into the matter, I finally was curious to try Japanese, and even felt brave enough to give sushi a chance. I ended up at Sakai Japanese Bistro. The menu is vast and covers a great deal of their cultures' tastes. There is also a hibachi area of the restaurant, although I have never eaten at that end, it seems to be very popular. The sushi selection is large and everything I have order is fresh and made quickly. The presentations are lovely and eye pleasing as well. I have yet to receive an unpleasant roll or nigiri selection. The sushi tends to be my appetizer however, as I am partial to the soba noodles. I love soups, especially of the Asian variety. Soba has such a strange, yet appealing taste complex and Sakai is the only local Japanese restaurant that I have found to offer it on the menu. I usually order the beef or the curry. The former has a nice sweet/savory balance, with the curry giving a nice bit of heat. Note that Japanese curry is vary different in taste to that of Indian, with a fairly mild amount of heat. Definitely a flavor worth experiencing. The last time we were there, my wife ordered a bowl of ramen. This was probably the only negative experience we have had at Sakai. She was very unhappy with this choice, stating that it was lacking in comparison to the ramen restaurant that we frequent in the Columbus area. In my opinion, ramen tends to be best ordered from Japanese restaurant that ONLY servers ramen. I have also learned this the hard way, although it was not at Sakai. The service is always spectacular and never lacking in anyway. We took our family and another family a few years ago, and they were more than accommodating to our large party, despite it being a busy Friday night. In fact, they had a special "private room" that they sat us in. It was really nice to have the entire space to ourselves! Even though we were in an out of the way area, the service was still amazing. Our waiter was constantly checking in on us. There are a lot of Japanese that live in and around Troy, and they all seem to gravitate to Sakai. This is certainly testament to the owner's dedication to the authenticity of their menu, as well as to his loyal clientele. I have eaten at several other Japanese establishments since my first experience with Sakai, but this is certainly my favorite. read more

We had dinner here the other night, myself and 5 of my teens. Chose the hibachi side to eat at. 1) first impression/seating/wait. Very fast and clean 2) service/drinks & order taking. The waitress was quick and did well with drinks, bringing them back orderly. 3) chef. I have been to other hibachi styles and this was was sub par. The chef didn't greet us when he came to the table and the show, well quite frankly, sucked. 4) sashimi was excellent ** nicely prepared, and tasted delicious! 5) appetizers. Potstickers, salad and soup. The dressing on the salad is nice and delightful. Soup, typical miso. The waitress forgot my soup and salad but brought it to me once I asked. 6) hibachi food. Under seasoned, bland, poorly prepared. Chef didn't do it the way I have seen most places so that all the food gets served to you hot. By the time the underseasoned veggies got to my plate, the rice was cold. If there would have been a trick, volcano or something? Idk. That chef definitely needs more training and he needs to taste his food while learning. 7) price. For 7 of us, $200$ was rediculous in my opinion for the nasty food. I have ordered here before and will continue to order my salmon teriyaki or my sushi platters to go, where, assumingly a different, more skilled chef does the cooking, but for hibachi... we won't go back for this one :( read more

This place is pretty good if a bit inconsistent. Given that it's a Japanese restaurant in someplace as far afield as Troy, I don't have any major complaints (except perhaps about locals who refuse to learn to use chopsticks or pronounce the name of the restaurant like "sake," which, for the record, they're also mispronouncing--but I digress and wax a bit too snobbish). The sushi and sashimi are sometimes fine sometimes good, maybe depending on which day the fish came in. The tempura is unremarkable but perfectly edible. The service is passible to good. I don't really get the whole hibachi/teppanyaki fakery thing, but if you're into that, it's also an option (tho' I think you need to call ahead). In the end, given the paltry options in Troy, when I'm in town visiting family, I usually end up here at least once, sometimes even by my own choice. read more

My co-worker and I went to this restaurant while we attended a local welding class and it was the best decision we made. We sat at the sushi bar and the workers were so nice. The sushi was amazing!!! It honestly is the best I ever had. I am 33 and just transferred to Louisiana from Hawaii in the Coast Guard and have a lot of experience eating sushi and this literally was the best. It's surprising that this place didn't get reviewed more times considering it appears to be the only Japanese restaurant in Troy. I went to the restaurant for lunch today. Upon stepping in, I noticed several customers are Japanese (Good Sign # 1). The waitress greeted me in Japanese (Good Sign # 2) and offered me a counter seat. Being from California, I am always skeptical of ordering seafood in a state without a coastline. Therefore, I ordered beef don and tebashio (grilled chicken wings). The beef don was fairly good, on par with what I have had in California. The tebashio was grilled nicely. The lemon slice came with it had decorative peel. The only thing I have against this place is that the waitress forgot my hot tea and the beef don was slightly salty without a drink. While I was eating, the chef came to the counter to start preparing saba. You can tell that he is quite experienced from the way he was slicing the fish. I read on ActiveDayton.com that the chef has been involved in several Japanese restaurants in Dayton (http://www.activedayton.com/dayton/restaurants/144011/DetailedList.jspd?activity=144011). I'm with Gregg H. on this. Yuck, yuck, and yuck. I will never go back to this restaurant again. The sushi is bland and completely lacking in originality. The meals prepared at the hibachi are greasy and way too salty. The miso soup tastes like water. The service is slow and completely unengaged. And, to top it all off, you're lucky to get out of this restaurant spending less than $15 on sub-par food. Take my advice: if you live in Troy and want sushi or hibachi, it is definitely worth making the drive to somewhere that is not Troy in order to find a better restaurant. Jules is a huge sushi fan and, lacking options in the Englewood area, we took the quick trip north to Troy to give Sakai a try last year. After our first time out, it's quickly become the place we take friends for fantastic Asian food on the north side of Dayton. Firstly, though--skip the hibachi/teppanyaki table. It's good, don't get me wrong, but it's the same thing you'll have anywhere. For the real Sakai experience? You need to hit the sushi bar and the dining room. I wish I could speak more to the sushi aspect of Sakai, but as I mentioned, I'm not a fan. Jules, however, swears by the spicy tuna roll, which always smells fresh and clean, with tightly packed rice. She's had several other rolls, as well, and has never had a complaint. For the best stuff, though? Order one of the ramen/udon noodle bowls. You'll receive a bowl the size of your head of delicious steaming broth, filled with either thin (ramen) or thick (udon) noodles, a slow-cooked protein, and several other enhancers. My favorite is the beef udon, which has a fantastic balance of sweet and savory, brought on by the slow-cooked beef mingling with slices of sweet yellow onion. Jules prefers the soy ramen, which comes with slices of roast pork, egg, and more. The best thing about the ramen/udon bowls? They're cheap! The two of us eat heartily, with leftovers, for less than $25. You can't beat that with a stick. Go slurp some noodles! read more

THE best restaurant in Troy, Ohio and rivals anything you would find in Cincy, Columbus, and Cleveland. Once you walk in every employee says "Hi" and will bow. Very gracious when walking you to your table asking you how you are and they make you feel very welcome. Service is very prompt and courteous. The menu is diverse since they offer a teppanyaki or hibachi area and a regular area including a sushi bar. The sushi bar is very authentic offering options like: salmon, tuna, soft-shell crabs, mackerel, BBQ eel, etc. The sushi menu is a separate menu and can be ordered as such. The hibachi menu offers many seafood and meat dishes, all done very well. The regular menu item include many Udon noodle dishes, sauteed salmon and chicken, tempura , plus some speciality items. I really like the fact that they include a "speciality menu" for everyone ( much like the "secret menu" that most of us non-Asians only here about) as this menu includes some rare (well rare for midwest Ohio folks) like mackerel ( which is delicious) and beef tongue ( which I am dying to try). I was in Troy, OH for business and tried Sakai because of the decent reviews from other Yelpers. I'm from Los Angeles so I've had great sushi and I've had terrible sushi. Sakai was, by far, THE WORST sushi I've ever had and here's why. First, I was the only one at the bar. I waited about 5 minutes until the chef finally stopped chatting with his buddies at the table next to bar before he meandered over to me. We said my hellos and I gave him my verbal order--isn't that standard for every sushi bar?? Apparently not here. He made me write down my order on the order menu in front of me. I WAS THE ONLY ONE AT THE BAR!! It's just silly. The sushi order form included basic sushi options only. No originality at all. I almost got up and left before ordering and both my wallet and I regret I didn't. I ordered a couple of small cut rolls and a hand roll and he made the entire order very quickly. The hand roll was fish, rice and seaweed! Nothing else. Booooring. I needed to dig to find the salmon in my cut roll and the chef was so lazy on my spicy tuna cut roll that he put a dollop of hot sauce in top each each piece like a cupcake. Huh? Just as the other reviewer stated, the fish was all pre-cut. I huge sushi no-no. I also ordered the miso soup which lacked salt. It was bland as can be and when I received my check, I reluctantly signed my name on my slip. The whole meal was worth about $5 but cost me over $20 with tip. Ugh! Positives: Most Japanese restaurants bear little resemblance to restaurants you might find in Japan. Sakai is the real deal. With the American Honda distribution center in Troy, and the Honda engine plant in Anna, as well as the various suppliers in the area, this place caters to Japanese clientele. They've got a pretty wide ranging menu which is meant to provide a lot of the comforts of home to the Japanese expat community, but it can be a bit hit or miss. That said, the flavors are right. That may sound like dim praise, but it's actually hard to find. I've always found the service to be very good. Negatives: I find most dishes to be good, but not great. And if you are looking for hibachi or 'international' sushi, all the various rolls with the rice on the outside, these styles of cooking are perfectly fine, but they were developed by various people in the US for US tastes. It's not universal, but the good folks of Japan tend to eschew these styles, particularly the hibachi, so you might do better somewhere else that specializes in them. I'm not sure. Just speculation on my part based on some of the reviews. I lived in Japan for several years, so when I come, I come for more traditional comfort food as well. Summary: Good, authentic food. I am originally from Oregon and was a bit surprised to find a Sushi restaurant in Ohio, but I like ti better than any of the West Coast sushi restaurants. The sushi is always very fresh and tasty, and the sushi chef takes special orders. The Miso soup is fantastic, and I have yet to order anything off the menu that I didn't like. Had a great lunch here today. Though I am a regular here I never have had a bad experience, and since I am new to yelp I am going to do a review. Seated pretty fast, party of two. Place was busy. Waitress got our drink orders right away and returned with the drinks. A few minutes later the waitress returned to take our orders. We started off with suishi, tuna roll and spicy tuna roll. I like this suishi here becuase they do not make it cheap by adding veges. Photo included. Also ordered for appetizar gyoza, okonomiyaki, and takoyaki. Didn't try the gyoza but brother ate them and said they were pretty awesome. He also really liked the takoyaki and was partial to the okonomiyaki. I, on the other hand am a takoyaki snob and just love the takoyaki here. Perfectly fried with a good amount of sauce, mayo and dried fish flakes. The okonomiyaki was much better today then other times. It is always good, but since I havent had it in awhile I think I enjoyed it much more. For the main part of the meal, yes we ate alot today, I ordered oyakodon and my brother beef yakisoba. My brother was amazed at how good it was. He never had this before. He now plans to bring his wife here. My dish, oyakodon was also delicious. It is the first japanese food I have ever eaten so its like the perfect comfort food for me. So Sakai never fails on this dish. Oh, also had the miso soup, love it. Now I know my review is glowing, but the meal well deserves it. If you havent been here before you should try it. read more
