Still my GO TO sushi place cuz I love their Cambridge Garden roll. Very unique!!! However, the portions and their prices are becoming more and more ridiculous. $20 for a tiny roll?! $10 for a small thing of shishito peppers?! Outrageous ... especially during these times. I still fully recommend this place for the taste and quality, but the amount you get for the price is pure heartache. Can't comment on the ambiance cuz I always UberEats this, but for the service, it's always very quick and exactly how we order it.

My friend and I came here one weekday evening for dinner and were able to be seated right away despite not having a reservation and also the overall size of the restaurant being relatively small. We were quite lucky as I noticed more people standing by the wall waiting around as the night went on. Few things make me as happy as seeing a gluten-free sushi menu, so I'm super grateful that this restaurant is able to accommodate my allergy! Our server was very welcoming and patiently went through all the different rolls that could be made gluten-free and brought out tamari sauce without me even needing to request it. My friend had been here several times before and told me that she's really enjoyed Sakana's specialty rolls, especially the ones with truffle oil. I'm not the biggest fan of truffle oil, but I also thought all of their specialty rolls looked really enticing. It was a bit of a bummer that the ones that I wanted to try the most couldn't be made into a gluten-free version... I ended up going with a roll that had tuna on the inside and scallop on the outside, as well as an extra Philadelphia roll. The specialty rolls are about ~$18 or so and the more regular rolls (that come with 6 pieces instead of 8) are about $8. As other people have noted before, the portion sizes were a bit smaller than I expected, especially for the specialty rolls. However, other than that, we had a wonderful dining experience. Our food was brought out super quickly and they continuously checked on us throughout the evening. Overall, I can see why this place gets quite busy around Harvard Square, definitely a solid local option if you're in the mood for sushi!

Came to Sakana on a whim, and honestly this was some so-so sushi. Their fish doesn't taste particularly high quality. Their Tuna Sashimi wasn't good, it was a bit hard to chew. Their Salmon options tasted way better. No issues with service though, their staff all seemed very nice.

I ordered takeout here. For two people, we each ordered one roll and got the spicy tuna rice tots to share. They gave us utensils for one person in the bag...and indeed, the rolls were quite small and it was more of a one-person sized serving. The quality of the fish was delicious and it was plated nicely. I didn't like the texture of the rice tots themselves, though I liked the fish on top.

This was our 3rd time here and it's definitely my favorite sushi spot in the Somerville, Cambridge, Medford area. While it's a small restaurant with about 5 tables and 4 bar seats, we've never had to wait more than 10 min for a table on a Friday or Saturday night. Additionally, the food is always fresh and comes out quick. What I like so much about this place is the unique combinations of the sushi. Especially the Sakana, Hokkaido and Spicy Mango Avocado rolls. What we ordered: - Sakana Makimono: We get this every time. The jalapeño and crunchy sesame soy sauce are amazing - Hokkaido Makimono: We get this every time. The spicy yuzu miso sauce is delicious - Rocky Road Makimono: First time trying this and would make this a staple in our order - Hot Chili Maki: solid - Spicy Mango Avocado: love this simple unique roll - Spicy Crispy Shrimp: solid

Even though the place is pretty small and cozy, the wait goes by quite fast. My favorite was the torched raw scallop--so much flavor. We sat at the sushi bar so it was nice to see our food being made fresh.

If I had to choose a couple items for my last meal on Earth, sushi from Sakana would be on there. Sakana is a small gem that I found out about 2 years ago. I came here with a hungry friend and we ordered 5 rolls EACH. Yes, this is a small hole in the wall place and yes, it's a SUPER casual place. But I absolutely love coming here. Service is very attentive and the place is clean. My favorite rolls to get here are the Hokkaido and the Sakana, but every piece of fish that you put in your mouth from here is fresh. I have not had a bad experience and I hope it stays that way. Sakana is also very affordable (for sushi) and the quality is top notch. The place is definitely a no frills type of spot. There are plenty of street parking and is super accessible by bus/ a 10 minute walk from either Central/ Harvard Red Line. They also offer a few alcoholic beverages like wine, beer, and sake. Definitely come here and you will not be disappointed!

Standard, reliable sushi rolls, nothing crazy with affordable pricing for people who want sushi. I felt slightly disrespected by service, which I'll talk about in the latter portion of the review (this is where I deduct 2 stars). I am a big fan of having sushi mostly ungarnished to appreciate the fish on its own, but I branched out from my usual and wasn't disappointed. Soft shell crab (10/10): I love soft shell crab, the tobiko and eel sauce gave it a sweet and saltiness. Very standard roll. Sakana roll (9/10): I like this one a little less, just because I was overwhelmed by ~stuff~ but the chili oil crunch was a nice touch. I really loved how buttery the torched salmon was. Yellowtail roll (10/10): not much to say, standard and good. Service was subpar. There were two other tables in the restaurant who had walked in after I had sat down. When I was sat, I was not brought water until after the other tables had gotten it and after I had asked for it, and the first time I was greeted when I was asked if I was ready to order, which again, was after the other tables ordered. It was a disappointing and a bit offensive. I would order takeout here but probably not come back to the establishment itself. I try to separate service from the food, but it all felt a little rude and unwelcoming.

Another hidden gem in the Greater Boston area! I came here for the first time recently and had a great first impression- the staff were extremely helpful and the fish was so fresh! We ordered the salmon salsa taro chip ($11), salmon oyakodon ($21), and chirashi donburi ($22). The server notified us that they were low on salmon but offered to replace the salmon in our appetizer with tuna. We enjoyed the tuna salsa. It had the perfect mix of fresh tuna pieces, crispy peppers, and the saltiness was just right. This dish did not skimp on the fish! The servers kept an eye on our plate and offered to get us more taro chips when they saw that we ran out. The taro chips were hardly salted at all but I liked how the starchiness and crunchiness balanced with the soft, savory tuna. I would totally get the salmon oyakodon again. The bowl was loaded with salmon roe which added so much fattiness and richness to everything! My favorite part was the seared salmon belly and its crispy, fragrant chili oil on top. The bowl didn't look super big at first but ended up being quite filling. There was just enough rice that every bite had salmon roe and tobiko. The chirashi bowl had a huge variety of fish, all of which were very fresh. The seared tuna with chili oil was, again, my favorite part of the bowl. The price point for the raw fish donburi is pretty comparable to what you'd get at other spots around the city. The vibes of the restaurant are homey while sleek. I highly recommend this spot!

My experience here was pretty good. Host and server were really nice. They even accommodated switching out the shrimp items bc I'm allergic to shrimp. The sushi boat filled me up, everything tasted fresh and the presentation was nice. One thing I didn't like but totally out of their control was how close I was to the next table. I could hear the conversation next to me which was awkward. I would come back again.

Great small sushi restaurant right on Mass Ave in Cambridge. Specialty rolls such as Sakana, Rocky Road, and Crimson are really impressive with a variety of flavors and textures. Standard sushi such as salmon avocado also very good. Great service and great sake options as well. Small space but very cute and comfortable for a date night.

I stopped by Sakana on a whim for lunch. The sushi lunch special ($15) was delicious and very high quality. It included 5 pieces of nigiri and 6 pieces of a roll (spicy tuna is listed on the menu, but they were kind enough to let me sub salmon avocado!). Super tasty!! read more

Been on the hunt for sushi around Cambridge since we moved here last year, and out of the gracious recommendation of a neighbor, we heard about Sakana. Their delivery has consistently been quick and fresh - we're going on week #4 where we've ordered at least once a week. Although we are still working our way through the menu and everything so far has been great, we highly recommend the Nigiri plate and the Sakana roll... you won't be disappointed! read more

First time eating here and ordered 5 rolls that got slammed into 2 boxes. I'm sure the rolls would have been delicious but the packaging of the food was a turn off. Everything pretty much tasted the same because it was just all mushed together. I order the dragon roll everywhere I go and I could hardly recognize it. The Sakana maki was mouth watering good and I would come back for this alone. But I love to judge a sushi place by the simple staples - their California roll and their spicy tuna - both super fresh and simply amazing at this place. Wow my new favorite sushi spot in Boston! Went here per a friend's recommendation, and everything tasted great! Would recommend sticking to nigiri. They have some creative appetizers that I tried (tuna on top of rice tots, salmon salsa with taro chips). I think the next time I go I will just order a bunch of the hamachi, unagi, and salmon belly! They top their pieces with good flavor and texture. For example, the salmon belly is topped with a savory crunch thing which pairs very well. The fish is all so fresh, and the toppings are perfectly complementing the fish so as to not be overpowering. I usually don't like unagi because the sauce is often too much, but here is is perfect! I'm craving the sushi as I write this, so maybe I will pop in tonight for dinner! read more

Nice, cozy little sushi place with some real gems and great service. We stopped by for an early dinner on a Sunday, looking for something light and refreshing after a few days of heavy fair. We were warmly greeted and quickly seated; not too surprising given the time of day, but always nice for Cambridge. Prices were very nice for the area, with the bill coming around 35/person, tip inclusive, and that's with ordering a fair bit of food. Our server was a great guy, and we really appreciated his friendly take on the menu offerings. Speaking of food, everything was excellent. We ordered some salted edamame, which came out quick to snack on, along with bowls of miso (which came with the entrees). Perfect temperature for both, and just the right level of salty for the miso. We ordered the Nigiri Dinner and the Makimono Combo Special to share between the two of us, which was just the right amount to fill us up. I'm usually pretty picky about nigiri, but Sakana's fish really hit the spot: each piece was excellently fresh, and seemed very meticulously prepared. A touch too much wasabi paste on a couple pieces, but I can hardly complain. A star player of the night was the Seared Salmon Belly, which was honestly one of the tastiest single pieces of sushi I have had since I was last in Japan. We liked it so much we had a second order of it in lieu of desert, which was the perfect closer. Likewise, the rolls were great, the Caterpillar especially. Rolls are typically something I think of like pizza: frequently good, but rarely exceptional. That being said, their humble Caterpillar happened to reach that perfect combination of texture, flavor, and balance that defines an exceptional roll. I was a little less jazzed by the Mango Special roll, but that's probably just my inner purest talking. The Snow Mountain and Spicy Tuna were both great as well, and pleasingly light. Overall, a surprisingly great little corner spot. If you're in the mood for some quality sushi, try the Seared Salmon Belly and the Caterpillar Roll, and enjoy the experience. read more

I came here with a friend on a weekday night, and we were immediately seated upon arrival and given menus and served water. There were a lot of options on the menu, but I eventually decided on the Hokkaido and Dragon. One of them had seared scallop on it which was delicious which gave the entire roll a roast-y seared flavor and it was awesome; I've never had sushi like that before. Both rolls were really fresh, and I liked all the ingredients in both. I really enjoyed my meal, and service was pretty good too. The rolls came out to be around $30 post-tax which is a bit pricey, but for the quality, I would go again. read more

I love their food. I have not been to the restaurant yet. But now that everything is loosening up I will I order takeout no contact delivery. I also order the same thing every time! It's so good. I always tell myself to try something else but I don't. I will when I visit restaurant. I hope this will be helpful regardless The Sushi Sakana Roll You can read ingredients on their menu on line. Fabulous Fresh just made and everything is delivered fast. I use DoorDash now Salmon teriyaki It's served with Miso Soup Rice and veggies with the Salmon. Plain and two different sauces on the side in containers. Everything is packed really well & nicely. But the Salmon is so great. Not the usual pink piece of salmon you always see. It is so fresh and darker and more moist and there are 3 usually 4 pieces! I have ordered this over and over.. But I am going to the restaurant soon and hope to try other dishes. read more

We had a lovely time at Sakana. The staff were every attentive to our needs and gave several recommendations that made our evening enjoyable. The food was presented well and tasted well. The quality of the ingredients was good and was clearly very fresh. The decor was simple but not understated. I appreciate that they have a heater above the door. Although we were seated right next to the door the heater that only turned on when the door opened kept us at the perfect temperature as the first snow of the season fell. Nice sushi place. The fish itself was nothing out of the ordinary sushi type you can get. Service was really attentive and the restaurant had a nice ambiance. My one complaint is the lighting. It's just way too bright. Made my eyes hurt after a long day staring at a screen. I like to have slightly more dim lighting during dinner. We shared the sushi boat and had soups of our own. I got miso. Great boat sushi combination! read more

We got the sakana roll, Hokkaido roll, spicy tuna and yellow tail scallion! They made a spicy salmon for us by accident and gave it to us for free! You should come here solely for the service but the sushi will make you stay ;)! Their specialty makimono is amazing. I really recommend the Hokkaido roll. Also the sale menu is great! I always have a truly wonderful experience here and the service genuinely care that you have a wonderful time. Very fast and prompt. I really appreciate coming here. read more

They have an intimate dining room with pleasant decor and large windows. They're also reliable with takeout - quick turnaround and sturdy packaging. I've only had take-out here since I live around the corner, so can't tell you anything useful about the dining experience. My limited interactions with the staff have been very pleasant though. Customer service is friendly & accommodating. Prices: Pretty reasonable! Food: Yooo what a deal, y'all. That sushi boat for 1 is perfect to split for 2. Get the sushi boat & get that makimono combo & you're set! Comes with soup & salad. That's some delicious quality sushi for 2 for less than $60 right there. Sushi is always fresh, great portions, & fantastic selections. Highly recommend. Really nice alternative to Cafe Sushi if you're looking for something new to shake up your sushi life. Favs include: -Smoked torched scallops -Scallop handroll (gotta ask for it) -Crimson roll -Hokkaido roll -Uni -Chirashi -Salmon oyakodon (3 slices of raw salmon, salmon belly, ikura, & tobiko on top of rice) Love you, Sakana. We arrived at the restaurant an hour before it closed, and the host said couldn't seat us because it's late, asked us to do take out, so we did take out. We came back in 15 minutes to pick up our food, and saw they just sat down a new table of people plus there's more seats available in the restaurant. read more

I'm a sushi lover but I admit sometimes when it comes to trying new non buffet sushi places...I can be hesitant because of the prices. But I am so glad a friend recommended this place to me!! I am in love with the Sakana roll!!! If you're like me and think specialty rolls might not be worth the money, think again my friend! Our next favorite sushi restaurant!! What I love about the sushi here is you do not need to dip your nigiri sushi in soy sauce because the chef usually brushes some sauce on the top of the fish. This allows you to enjoy the sweetness and own flavors that each fish carries. Thumbs up! read more

Very good local sushi place. They use very high quality fish, as good as you can normally find. I got the tuna and salmon donburi, which was reasonably priced and great tasting, although the rice could have been a bit softer. Be warned, the menu is pretty short compared to most sushi places, with very brief descriptions as well. Would recommend and come again. read more

Everything is outstanding here! My daughter sister and I had an outstanding dinner here on a late Sunday evening. All tables were occupied so we sat at the sushi bar and were promptly served. Between the 3 of us we shared a seaweed salad, sishito pepper tempura, 8 pieces of tuna sashimi and 4 signature Makimono rolls. All food was elegantly presented and was super fresh. This place has great nigiri! I got the 8 piece nigiri dinner during my last visit. All star was the seared salmon belly nigiri. Theres a really nice sauce they put on top with sesame seeds to add a nice little crunch. Also enjoyed the shrimp, hamachi, strip bass and bronzini nigiris. I have gotten delivery a handful of times now from Sakana and every time it has been a delight! I would like to dine in someday soon. They have a variety of both simple and fancy sushi, and I love that the menu is not too large or overwhelming. They put a delicious crunchy garlic topping on rolls featuring salmon, and the salmon sashimi. I love this so much, but if you're a purist be aware. I honestly don't remember which rolls have been my favorite because I have fun trying different things each time. Everything has been good and fresh. Couldn't recommend more! read more

Let me start by telling you how amazingly wonderful the service is!! You sit down and cold glasses of water appear and menus with a the most helpful and gracious waiters. The food is absolutely amazing - delicious is an understatement!! Also the créme brûlée afterwards is heaven on a plate. Speaking about the plates and bowls - love love love the pottery! Really phenomenal, wow! It's a delightful small place but each piece of sushi was prepared with so much care and you could tell all the ingredients used were of the highest quality. I can't necessarily speak on the dine-in experience. However, I would highly recommend ordering take-out from Sakana only on the condition that you would like to spend two or more hours of the night expelling everything you ate a few hours earlier, much as myself and my girlfriend did. For the money we spent, we were very disappointed :( read more

I had a really nice lunch at the sushi bar today. The place was almost 3/4 full when I sat down a little before 1pm, but the sushi bar was empty which was great for me! I normally go to cafe sushi, but with such strong reviews I wanted to give Sakana a chance. I ordered the sushi lunch and was not disappointed. The spicy tuna roll even had some heat to it. The sushi itself was fresh and plated with care and precision. The seared salmon belly was a little sweet for my taste buds, but everything else was spot on. Great value, attentive service, and fresh fish - def will be back. read more

Had an amazing experience at Sakana. I had ordered delivery once which does not do the fresh sushi justice. We showed up last night about 8:00 and they did not have a table for 3. There were various 2 person tables but there was not a way for the three of us to be at the same table. We waited about 15 minutes maybe. They offered us water and the menus when we were waiting. After we were sat they gave us all a miso soup and the chef prepared some salmon belly as an apology for the wait. As the reviews note it was delicious. The crunch and the sakana sauce on the fresh salmon belly was delicious!! Very glad we got to try it. We ordered the Makimono Combo Special, Sakana Sushi Boat, and the Chirashi Donuri. There was plenty of food to go around. The rolls were very delicious and rolled well while the sashimi was tasty. The Chirashi bowl was very good and the rice had a nice flavor. I really enjoyed the assortment and diversity of fish they offered. The hot chili roll was fairly spicy but I also enjoyed the kick. These seem to be some of the most popular items and I know why! Delicious sushi with fair pricing! This is my favorite spot for sushi in Harvard Square. There aren't many tables, so come early or prepare to wait. The staff are very friendly, and the food comes out fast and delicious. The sushi boat is a great deal, and all of the food I tried was good, especially the sweet potato roll. Between Harvard and Central Squares, there's a nice little sushi restaurant called Sakana. It has excellent service, fresh sushi, and a cup of delicious green tea to welcome you to their establishment.
