I made a reservation online through Yelp! but it needed a modification. The restaurant was super responsive and the reservation was perfect. They were amazing. We were a group of nine that included a few children. We went all out. The clear soup was good and flavorful. The salad was fresh and we loved the dressing. It wasn't the typical orange ginger but a light dressing. Delicious! I got the shrimp and scallop combo hibachi and I love that it comes with both rice and noodles. Lots of fresh vegetables. The scallops and shrimp were meaty and perfectly grilled. Others got steak cooked to their liking and some got salmon. Apps were edamame and a dragon roll and spicy tuna. I didn't try the apps but it was a fancy presentation. Everything was just so good. The service was impeccable. The chef was super engaging with everyone, including the littles. Hibachi is always fun and they are pros on fun. They handled our group with humor and the theatrics you've become accustomed to at hibachi dinner were on point. We went there on a Sunday, late afternoon, and it was amazing. I also got a fried ice cream for my birthday with fireworks! Thank you! The restaurant is big and can accommodate large parties. Sake Bon is an absolute hibachi heaven in the Capital Region! I don't have any other that can quite compare to the quality of food they serve here. Their hibachi is always delicious, fun, & entertaining. Their chefs have more than a decade of experience and their teppanyaki skills really show it. Whether you're eating solo or with a friend, or a whole group, remember that you can still take a seat in front of the hot and flaming grill. However, you can still get the hibachi meals at a regular table but won't be able to watch the show (I highly recommend watching the show and enjoying the meal at the grill). They have great lunch specials and even kid's meals for those looking to keep the kids entertained. My go-to is their HIBACHI COMBO with STEAK + SCALLOPS. The chef will most definitely cook the protein to your liking. Not all hibachi spots include both fried rice and noodles in the meal, but Sake Bon does! The carbs are so packed with garlicky soy flavor, unlike many other places I've tried (bold, umami, and addicting...no kidding). The meal is complete with a side salad topped with the creamiest ginger dressing and a clear soup loaded with the perfect amount of sliced mushrooms and an onion flavored broth. Pair it with a nice cocktail, wine, or sake... you're all set! Their apps are also very generously portioned, so it's a good idea to share. My daughter ordered the appetizer Edamame, and SIL opted for the Chicken Satay skewers and Yellowtail sushi to start . Also ordered a side of fried rice which was disappointing in presentation. There wasn't any eggs, onions or green onions you'd normally see in a fried rice dish. Taste was pretty bland. I opted for the Sizzling Beef Short Ribs... OMG, it was wonderful. Great assortment of vegetables, mushrooms,onions, asparagus,zucchini. Ribs were sliced in manageable pieces, superb brown sauce with just the right seasoning. Accompanied by a salad ( which unfortunately had too many brown pieces of lettuce) and a regular tasting miso soup. The meal itself turned everything around as I opted to forgo the sides and concentrate on the meal itself. I'd rate it 9.7. My daughter ordered the Hibachi chicken with steak and had enough for another meal. Fried rice, noodles, vegetables, chicken and steak! Winner. All orders came quickly even though the restaurant had two HIBACHI parties going on and occupied tables around us. I appreciate the ambiance of the place, clean and welcoming. This was my second visit to Sake Bon. I was asked to find a Hibachi restaurant with high ratings and this one was on top of the list. There were 4 of us and I had made a reservation for 6:00. We arrived on time and were promptly greeted and seated. The only issue, and the reason for 4 stars is the hostess demanded we sit in certain chairs which prevented us from being able to talk together. If she had allowed us to sit at the end we could've been facing each other, not sitting in a line, and there was no one else sitting yet. There was absolutely no reason for her demanding this seating arrangement. When 2 couples go out to eat, they would like to talk with each other. Yes we tried and she was forceful with her demands. The restaurant was exceptionally clean and very comfortable. We found our chef to be very friendly and funny, he even ended up tossing an egg into his hat without it breaking. The meal was excellent, great flavor and plentiful. Everything was cooked to perfection! Overall an excellent experience! If we should return to this restaurant with another couple, we will demand proper seating. read more

The menu reads like a diner with so many interesting options, many that I have never seen before (e.g. the Duck Tortilla Roll appetizer that I tried and loved!). The Black Dragon Roll's tempura shrimp was cooked to perfection, not greasy and with a delectable crunch. Presentation is an art form. The seafood was fresh. The medley of greens were tasty. The salmon I had at the hibachi table was overcooked, burnt, stiff and completely dry on the inside. Worst thing about it was I was sitting right in front of the salmon as that was happening. I have to be honest here. Being from the DC region, and having the opportunity to experience great, diverse foods, I was severely underwhelmed with Sake Bon Japanese Steakhouse. Food: I was visiting Clifton Park for work, and decided to give Sake a try. On a weekday evening, the restaurant wasn't busy at all. I ordered the Shrimp Tempura Roll for my appetizer and the Shrimp Pad Thai for my entrée. The presentation of the Shrimp Tempura Roll was really nice and the sushi pieces were big (bigger than the normal sushi roll). In terms of taste, the shrimp tempura was crispy, as to be expected, but there wasn't anything special about the roll. The Shrimp Pad Thai did not leave much to be desired. While the presentation was pretty, the noodles were dry and the shrimp tasted like it should have been in a Schezuan dish instead of the Pad Thai. Drink: I ordered the Passion cocktail (rum, grenadine, fruit juices). The ingredients reminded me of a Bahama Mama. Unfortunately, the cocktail wasn't great at all; in fact, I don't think it was even a cocktail! It tasted like fruit punch Kool-Aid. There wasn't a hint of liquor at all. Service: While the waiters asked the usual questions, "are you okay?," "do you need anything?," it took nearly 15 minutes for my drink. This was a little unnerving since the bar was empty. All-in-all, I wouldn't visit Sake again if visiting Clifton Park in the future. I almost never leave reviews for restaurants but my experience at Sake Bon last night stuck out to me more than most and not for good reasons. Me and 3 others arrive and we intended to eat at an hibachi table, but it was a pretty long wait so we decided to eat in the dining room, no big deal. The first thing I noticed while sitting down was how dirty my chair was. Like there were bits of noodle and rice on the chair. I just wiped it down and went on with my business. The server greets us and I can tell she had a bit of an attitude. She never really checked in with us and did not even bring out our dinners when they finally arrived after waiting a little over an hour. She did bring out our appetizers, edamame and gyoza. The edamame was good but the gyoza tasted like it was out of a frozen bag. The sauce with the gyoza was also pretty flavorless. So after we finished our apps, we wait and wait for our food. 3 of us ordered hibachi dinners and the other ordered the general tsos chicken. So we get the soup and salad. They were not bad but I think they could cut down on the amount of dressing they use in the salad as there was a pool of it in my bowl when I finished. The food arrived after an hour wait, the original server no where to be seen, someone else brings our food. The food tasted like it had been sitting for a while as the 3 of us who ordered the hibachi dinners all had cold plates. The one person who ordered the general tsos chicken was okay, they said it tasted it good. I got the steak and salmon. My salmon was pretty good but the steak was some of the worst I have eaten at a restaurant. I asked for medium rare, it was well done. The steak was not seasoned and was very chewy. I could not bring myself to finish the steak on my plate. I ate everything else as I was pretty hungry. After a finishing everything on my plate but the steak, my stomach was not feeling great. Something clearly did not agree with me and I excused myself from the table and went to bathroom to vomit. After coming back, I see one of the managers coming out to talk with the table. Instead of showing any empathy for me being sick in his restaurant, he kept claiming that I couldn't have gotten sick from his food, it takes 4-5 hours for it to happen. I could not believe he was trying to argue with me and the others at the table. I ended up having to rush home because I was not feeling well but I was told we got some of the food comped fortunately. It's one thing to serve bad food, but to argue with a guest who just got sick in your bathroom, that is where I draw the line. The sad part is I have been to this place a couple of times before and it's always been a decent experience. Safe to say last night will be last time I eat at this restaurant. read more

My rule for restaurants serving sushi is that the decor should not be fancier than the rolls. However, when the rolls and the service are just as good as the decor, if not better, you have a major win. I came here for lunch, and I feel their lunch specials are a great deal, particularly the sushi combos... a 2-roll combo for $9.95 and a 3-roll combo for $13.95 are a great start, and then you discover it includes miso soup and salad. The non-sushi part of our order matched the decor (see above). My sweet potato roll was among the best I've had, and I was equally satisfied with my tuna and yellowtail. The rolls are well prepared, the rice is of very good quality, and the wasabi was generous and tasty without being overwhelming, i.e., it enhanced the flavor. We were checked on frequently, by not only our server but several other members of the staff. Our water glasses were refilled often, and our meals came out quickly. Sake Bon occupies a big corner space that used to be an Asian Buffet, IIRC. (Before that it was some kind of other nationality, judging from the ornate Spanish-style handles on the restroom door.) It's a cut above your average neighborhood Asian fusion place, with a sexy green and blue lighting theme, faux marble tabletops, a wall separating the hibachi room and its drunken revels from the rest of the venue, and a sound track playing "I Just Want to Die" way too loud. I visited as part of my upstate sushi tour whereby I order the sushi lunch plus a side of saba (mackerel). They let me include saba as part of the lunch special so I added an uni (sea urchin) nigiri as my plus-one. The sushi was well cut and not miserly. I got a small salad plus miso soup, not one or the other. And it was pretty presented with a little trellis behind the food (see photo), anchored in a wasabi base. Unfortunately the rice was too humid, causing the nigiri to fall apart. I hate to mark down a restaurant for a single flaw, but presentation and that first mouthfeel is everything in sushi. Plus I paid $6 for my single uni, which is out of line with the rest of the pricing (I would have expected $4.50). Sake Bon is not on the level of Unagi, Sushi Tei and Yoshi's, my three favorite local spots. It is on the high side of three stars, though, and I'll return and try the rolls which seem to have an enthusiastic following. read more

Having watched the extensive remodeling of this particular corner location, as the total façade refurbishing of the entire strip mall was wrapping up, we were intrigued learn that this new Sake Bon business was not another Asian buffet. Upon entering, you have three options. You can go to a fully stocked bar bathed in purple light with a couple of large TVs, you can choose to dine at one of the hibachi tables and be entertained by a teppanyaki chef, or you can be seated at a table in comfortable, upholstered barrel chairs, or on a banquette that runs the length of the main dining room, with a view of the very modern and sleek looking eight-seat sushi bar. Not desiring a hibachi show, we were directed to the barrel chairs and banquette. From the bar we ordered a couple of draft beers. It's rare to find Sapporo ($5) on draft so my wife got to compare it with the bottle version - it was fresh and good. I had an IPA ($6.50) whose brand I don't recall, but it too was good. We shared three items, a Mexican Hat Roll ($15), Snow Mountain ($11), and Bangkok Basil Prawns ($19). The roll actually reminds you of hats with slices of jalapeño and a dollops of the chef's sauce on top of yellowtail wrapped roll sections. A very attractive presentation and add the wasabi if you dare to make the spicy yellowtail even more spicy. Snow Mountain is a large mound of diced white tuna, red snapper and crab stick over a seaweed salad and topped with tempura flakes, caviar, and a spicy eel sauce. A delicious mix of flavors and textures. Yum! The Bangkok Basil and Prawns actually came with both miso soup and a salad. The miso was rich and full of flavor. The salad was crisp with a nice ginger dressing. This dish could have had beef or chicken instead of the prawns but I wanted to see how well they prepared the fish. The prawns were cooked perfectly. They had a nice crunch to the bite and a fresh flavor. Also in this dish were sweet peas, asparagus, broccoli, onion, and eggplant. None of the vegetables were overcooked, and the basil sauce was used sparingly with a nice basil flavor. Service was attentive and friendly. read more

Had dinner reservations for Valentine's Day. Took 20 minutes to be seated after checking in- got no response when saying party's name so I ended up asking again to clarify we were checked in. The woman in the front proceeded to say hold on and answer three calls about to go orders before saying yes you're checked in. Once seated in the dining room with half of the tables empty our server came to take our order. We were informed the kitchen was backed up and food was an hour wait. It was evident that to go orders were prioritized. Being in the restaurant industry myself I can understand being busy and it is a holiday but that had to be the worst service experience I've had in my life. Nearly 2.5 hours it took to be fed when reservations were made in advance. By the time my meal came it was cold and we were uncomfortable being there so long. I had been in a kitchen from 6 am to 2 pm before driving an hour to see my partner for a relaxing Valentine's Day at this establishment. Was anything but that and I wish I put a meal together myself. Not worth it on a holiday but might be nice if you're willing to waste a large chunk of your time for mediocre food. If you can't handle the customers in front of you, pause your to go orders.
