Loved. This. Place. In moving from the Plaza/downtown KC area to Olathe, we've tried a few sushi restaurants that made us long for places like Kona and Nara. For us, the more suburban sushi restaurants have been lackluster, at best. We went to Sake Lounge on a whim last Saturday night and could not have been more pleasantly surprised. It's definitely unassuming from the outside (part of a strip of shops near AMC 30), but the inside of the restaurant feels upscale and has a good vibe. Blake was our waiter, and he was really helpful when we asked for suggestions (KC Rainbow roll is a MUST, Avocado Eel roll and King Salmon roll were wonderful). Blake gave us just the right amount of attention throughout our experience and was very laid-back and personable. The meal presentation was impeccable and interesting. Looking around the restaurant, each table's presentation varied. You could tell that the sushi chefs really cared about the way that the food was presented (not to mention how fantastic it tasted). On our way out, EVERY person working there smiled and wished us a good evening. The second we got into the car, we wanted to go right back in! This is our new go-to place. I hate that each experience here is so different. I rarely make updates while I'm still in the restaurant but here I am incredible annoyed by the food and service. We like to come during happy hour because of the great deals. We usually order the Thai pineapple shrimp in addition and that has goes downhill with each visit. On this last visit instead of trying to correct my dish, the waitress told me that's how it is supposed to taste. No, I always order this dish and it is NOT supposed to taste like that. I don't complain to get my food free, I complain because I work hard for money to just waste it on junk. Came in Monday for my birthday and All You Can Eat Sushi. We went in the lounge area, but quickly got redirected to the sushi side and got to enjoy a nice evening. The all you can eat option wasn't advertised, but thanks to Yelp, we asked and got to enjoy it. It was advertised soup and salad, but our waitress would only allow us one. I had the salad and the ginger dressing was amazing! I had 2 rolls and my SI had 4...which I ended up eating half of his last roll to make sure we didn't get charged $.50 per piece. It all came out on a sushi boat and looked great. Taste was good as well, except the hot & spicy roll wasn't hot or spicy, but it was still good. I went for lunch & ordered the sushi combo: choose 2 ($8) or 3 ($11) rolls of your choice (from a list of about 20) and soup or salad. Their salad has a creamy ginger dressing and is a substantial serving. I tried the salmon avocado roll, crispy spicy crab roll, honey chicken roll, and peanut avocado roll. Peanut avocado was interesting & better than just avo & fish because of the crnchy texture. Honey chicken is a cooked roll of battered chicken & honey sauce. I wild like to go back with a group and order a sushi roll boat. They have some fabulous combos at good prices and some original, very complex rolls available. For non sushi lovers, they also have bento boxes, teriyaki, and a section of Chinese favorites to choose from. So you can go with your co-workers and everyone can dine happy. read more

The atmosphere is wonderful. Classy and modem but modest and not pretentious at all. Our waitress was very nice and attentive. We went around 4 so the place was nice and quiet but started to pick up as we were leaving. We ordered their special and it was some of the best sushi I have ever had and the presentation was gorgeous. The special was 5 rolls for $35. The chef cam by to talk to us a bit too which was nice. This is a good option for sushi. Everything tastes good and the presentation is always fun. The gyoza is my favorite app. The crab Rangoon is on the sweeter side. I've had several rolls and they are all good. I think the bagel and volcano rolls are my favorite here. The only non sushi meal I have tried is the peppered steak and it is really good. If you are ordering to-go allow for 5-10 minutes more than they quote. If I get there right when they say I end up waiting a decent amount of time. There is really no good place to wait because the chairs are right by the doors. read more

We had dinner here on a weekday. We were seated right away and had a very nice waitress. I had 2 sushi rolls and my husband ordered the hibachi steak. The sushi combinations on their menu look really good and the sushi boat the table next to us ordered looked cool. I would try that if we had a bigger party. A pretty good sushi place with enough variety and good ambiance. The food... a pretty decent sushi place. They don't have a lot of the more unique items like Uni or Toro, but you'll find all the usual items here (probably catering more to the regular audience). They have lunch specials (which I've never tried), some very good happy hour specials, and a good selection of rolls and mixed sushi or sashimi platters. I wasn't the biggest fan of some of the appetizers though, if you're looking for just another flavor to your meal, it might be worth it, but I would recommend just getting an extra entree/roll/etc... The venue... the ambiance is pretty good, the restaurant is split into two sections; one section is for the bar/sit-down and the other is purely sit down and sushi bar. They also have a private party room if you have a large group. It can get busy, so you might get stuck waiting at the bar for a table. However, there are TVs and beer to keep you company so it could definitely be worse. Overall... worth a visit if you're in the area. read more

This sushi restaurant doesn't look like much from the outside but the inside is very trendy. This was my first visit. Prices of the rolls were comparable to other sushi places in town. We walked in without a reservation and was seated immediately. Waters were refilled quickly throughout our meal. I took one star because they forgot our crab rangoons and it came after our sushi. Pretty disappointed. They also didn't have any crab meat in it whatsoever. Omg! The sushi presentation was the best I've had in the area. It had a lights, banana leaves, flowers, etc. I loved it! The sushi was very good. We had spicy girl, iron man, and #1 Yum yum roll. The #1 was the best one, in my opinion. I've been here/gotten take out tons of times and the food is amazing. I love the volcano roll and haven't been able to find something as good at any other sushi place. Food alone is 5 stars. I'm giving 3 stars, though, because the service is pretty bad. I'm a server and don't like to be hypercritical of service, but it's not even worth dining in anymore. Once my partner and I waited over 30 minutes to get our check when it wasn't that busy. We even pushed our plates out to make it super obvious that we were finished eating. We watched a table of four that sat after us get all of their food and pay before we even got our check even though we had the same server. The last time we went we asked for a booth and said we were willing to wait for one if needed. They came to seat us 5 minutes later and we didnt get a booth. We assumed none were about to be open and just accepted it until less than 5 minutes later one opened up. Before we could ask a family of 5 sat there with young kids. They honestly probably would've been more comfortable at our table since the kids couldnt even reach the table in the booth. Just ten minutes after that another booth opened and a couple was seated. Other times haven't been as bad, but I still have never left without at least some small issue. It seems like tables around me get better service, so maybe it's just bad luck or because we're younger. Take out is fine, but almost always late. When it's a busy weekend night I totally get being a bit behind, but even when it isn't too busy inside I almost always end up waiting about 10 extra minutes. read more

New fav Sushi place...plus if you have those friends and family who don't like sushi, they have some Thai, traditional Chinese, Bento boxes for additional choices. The Crab Rangoon is done with wonton wrappers in a square pocket and packed with the delicious creamy filling you can't get enough of! Much better than the traditional tiny fried Death Stars that slice the soft tissue of your palette! The presentation is beautiful and the prices are a bit less than many sushi joints. Unfortunately the hibachi steak was not great. Service was horrible. After waiting 10 minutes for a waitress to take our drink order, we had to flag down the hostess for help. This establishment speciality is sushi. There isn't a hibachi experience like many other restaurants I have dined at. The flavor of the food was bland, and they do not carry the same condiments as other hibachi restaurants. If you are there for the sushi you are probably safe, but avoid this establishment if you are looking for a traditional flavorful hibachi entree. read more

We just happened upon this place while waiting for my daughter at Cosmic Jump. We sat at the bar so we could watch the magic happen and happen it did. They sushi chefs were amazing to watch, turning out beautiful masterpieces one after another. I personally don't care much for sushi so I had the prawn and vegetable tempura which was delicious and my boyfriend had the Sweet Mama Roll that came as a piece of art. Turns out, Sunday happy hour is from 3:30-9pm which was an added bonus. We split 5 rolls and 3 appetizers between the 2 of us (we hadn't ate all day) and we had plenty of leftovers left! Our favorite sushi roll was the shaggy dog! The Kanj salad is a must have as well! So refreshing and delicious! We also ordered the crab rangoon which was just as amazing as well as the rest of our food! Our total ended up being only $50 for our 5 rolls, 3 appetizer, and a coke. Which we thought was a steal! Our server was friendly and accommodating, even with her getting sat 4 other tables at the exact same time! I wish this place was closer to us because I highly recommend it. We had an excellent experience here. After waiting maybe two minutes to be seated (a wait for which they apologized), we studied the menu which is FULL of sushi options as well as entrees for the less adventurous. The outside of the building is not too exciting, but the interior is nicely decorated with tables and booth benches of, apparently, bamboo. We tried the avocado salad which was topped with at least half of a sliced avocado. The miso soup was solid, and the seafood hot and sour soup was tasty. Crab Rangoons were tasty, light on crab, but filled with a pleasant cream cheese sauce. The fabulous part of the meal was the entrees. Hubby had the Spicy Girl sushi (see picture) which was gorgeous and tasty and included real wasabi. I had the General Tso's which was actually SPICY! And had a great flavor. It's really disappointing that I have to update my review from 5 stars to 2. We used to come to Sake Lounge quite frequently until we moved a little further west. The service was always awesome and the food was even better. We walked in, and stood at the front door for a good 5 minutes before someone even acknowledging us. The hostess came over and said "Yes?", almost like it wasn't normal for us to stand there wanting to be sat at a table. She told us it would be a 15-20 minute wait. We asked if we could just sit at the bar instead and she told us no because they didn't have servers for the bar. 10 minutes go by and our name is called. They sat us at a table that hadn't even been cleaned off. No big deal, they seemed busy. They moved us to a booth instead which I prefer anyway. Our go-to for starters is always hot sake & crab rangoons. Our hot sake, really wasn't really hot. It was just warm. Sake is sake but it's always best hot! We got our crab rangoons and they were delicious as always. When it came to ordering our main entree, I ordered a philadelphia roll and my boyfriend ordered the King Salmon Roll & the egg drop soup to start. This has always been his favorite roll to order when we come here. His egg drop soup came out first. The best way to describe this soup was flavorless hot jelly soup that has been sitting in the pot for at least a full 24 hours. It was absolutely terrible. We didn't want to say anything, it's just soup. So we left it at that. We then got our sushi. Mine was normal, I did order a very simple roll. The King Salmon roll was overcooked and not their normal yummy roll like it has been in the past. The salmon looked and tasted like it had been overcooked and 'seared' for too long. Not to mention, it tasted 'fishy'. Not the good kind of fishy. We decided to say something to our waitress because we just couldn't finish our meal. The manager came over and told us how we should have ordered something other than that roll. It was disappointing that she wasn't understanding. She clearly saw how overcooked the salmon was. Needless to say, Sake Lounge isn't the same as it used to be. Service is terrible and food could be way better. read more

To say I'm a frequent customer of Sake Lounge would be an understatement. My husband and I eat at this restaurant at least 3 times a month, however, after our experience last night, I can confidently say we will never return. After paying our bill of over $200, my husband placed our newborn's car seat on a table next to ours not being used that had two empty drinks. As we put our child in his car seat to head out close to 9pm, a busboy came over and yelled several things along the lines of "are you serious", "I need to clean this table", "move!". When we apologized, he again stated "move! I need to clean this table". Now I would understand if this table was already being cleaned by him and we placed the car seat there or if there were others coming in needing to be seated there but even then a polite "would you mind moving your car seat so I can clean the table please" would have been much better than the manner of his tone and choice of words. As this encounter occurred, our friend who was there with us overheard this employee being disrespectful towards us and asked the busboy what he said. This employee then came our friends face and yelled "what?" "Do you have a problem?" And puffed his chest big to try to get a reaction from our friend. When the employee was asked what his name was he would not answer and continued to make rude remarks. At this point, we have a crying baby and asked to speak to a manager. After telling the manager what we just experienced her response was "he's just a kid, we try to tell him to control his anger but he's just a child." First, this was not a child, this was an adult who is old enough to have a job. Even if he was "just a child", a customer let alone a person should never be treated the way this employee thought to be ok. The manager continued to defend her employee while she also listened to him continue to try to argue about needing to clean the table. Fast forward to today, I called the restaurant and asked to speak to an owner. I was told by an employee that they would not have the owner call me back unless I told them why I needed him to. I explained to the lady on the phone we had a poor experience occur while dining at their restaurant last night and I would appreciate to speak with him at his convenience. The lady said I could leave a message for her to tell the owner but he would not be available to call me back. It is safe to say after this experience at Sake Lounge and the response I received on the phone that she would see if he has time to call me back based on my message that I will never return again. read more
