Quite a small bakery with bar stool seating, and a few outdoor seating. For a Sunday afternoon, it was pretty busy! Unfortunately found this spot overhyped. Strawberry Matcha was disappointing - matcha by itself was very bitter, though the strawberry puree did balance the flavor profile a bit. It also tasted very watered down, almost as if there was no milk added? And the Cortado was alright, not the best that we've had. We also got their Blueberry Yuzu Cake and Marble Tahini and White Miso Chocolate Chip Cookies. The cookies were okay, a little on the dry side. Same with the Blueberry Yuzu Cake, it was good, but also a little on the dry side too. The blueberry and yuzu flavors weren't balanced very well.

A local Asian inspired bakery with lots of unique flavor combinations that compliment each flakey pastry so well. Everything of course tastes better fresh but I love trying all the free samples they offer. They have a really nice drink variety too and I love all their seasonal options! A good stop to pick up something quick on the commute or a fancy way to spice up your typical morning coffee

Sadly not a big fan. I paid $26 for a a few subpar pastries and drink (almond Croissant, cruffin, crinkle cookie, and a matcha drink). Some of the pastries were sold out in the afternoon. The bakery is cozy with a beautiful private patio tucked in the back of Al Volo restaurant next door. While the Cruffin was fluffy with tasty cinnamon sugar coating, I didn't like the Lychee grapefruit filling. The Almond Croissant was a bit soggy and the almond paste was very bland. I asked for the Black/White Tahini Sesame cookie and instead was given the Crinkle Brownie Cookie, which was quite decadent. The Strawberry Matcha was quite bitter and a huge let down. While I tried to stir the strawberry puree at the bottom with the matcha on top, the flavors didn't quite mix well. The service was just as disappointing as the pastries. The male staff member was not welcoming and overall had an apathetic demeanor (he couldn't have cared less). While I love to support small businesses, Fresh Baguette has better pastries and baked goods across the street and Rose Avenue Bakery in Woodley Park has amazing Asian-inspired baked goods!

I stopped by Saku Saku Flakerie for breakfast this past Sunday before a movie at the Avalon. It's a Japanese fusion bakery, and when I walked in, I wanted it all. I decided on a quiche, an egg salad sando, and a tea. The was really tasty but had a little too much crust to filling (maybe that was intentional?). The egg salad sando was something I could eat every day - flavorful and I loved the pickles on it. The tea was great, too - fruity, unsweetened. It's a small little shop, with some bar stool seating inside and a few tables outside. The service was quite fast (my quiche was warmed up, so that and the tea took a few minutes). I found easy street parking around the corner from the bakery - a 2-minute walk. I'd definitely return to try more from them! And I'll definitely have another egg salad.

I love the concept of this place. A Japanese modern-fusion with french style cafe that leans towards not only Japanese flavors, but techniques in dessert-making. Their morning buns include mochi and they offer a variety of matcha drinks. Being a Flakerie, the pastries are indeed well made and flakey! Kudos to the recipe developer for coming up with these flavor combinations and recipes, as you can see, the pastries have many flakes due to the careful attention to lamination of dough and butter. At this location, you can peak through and see a little bit of the process and at the very least, they have a large showcase of their daily pastries that rotate daily. However, I must admit that the eating experience falls a bit short. Due to the high volume of customers and few staff, on popular days you can expect a long wait and its likely that your order might be out of stock for the day. In the long line, we saw a lot of other visitors rearranging their order to account for the limited supply. But as a cafe, its typical to run out of high demand items early in the day. Our drink felt speciality (and that premium is definitely apparent in the prices) but the flavors are not so pronounced. However, the drinks are made to order and served at the perfect temperature. We came on a cold and busy day so our pastries were cold (but flavorful!). It was not the best because mochi is just a hard block inbetween bread, very heavy on the stomach, but I see the vision they were trying to achieve in having a chewy mochi center, do try pastries warmed.

Matcha tastes like water. No strength at all. Leaving a three star review instead of a two star because I feel bad. But it was buns.

So glad I had the chance to visit this adorable bakery and can't wait to add it to my go-to weekend bake shops. The staff is absolutely amazing-super friendly. Their latte was perfect- the cinnamon bun flavor was delightful and the barista made the drinks quickly but with care. The pastries are great. There's a pretty good variety of them to choose from.

Omg. So glad I don't live closer to this place because I would be here nonstop! This storefront is narrow with a big window and a few seats on a narrow bar along the wall. There was at least one table outside, but a lot of people took their goods to go. I had a black sesame latte which was SO GOOD, but be warned, my mouth and lips were covered in ground black sesame afterwards and I didn't realize until 30 minutes later. My cardamom pistachio mochi bun was outstanding. So flaky and chewy. I have no idea how they do it! They were also very generous with the icing, which was delicious. Can't wait to come by again soon.

I've been meaning to check out this place for a long time, and I finally did. I guess I expected too much. When I arrived around 1 PM, most of the breads were either sold out or not available. My daughter ordered a cold matcha latte and a croissant, while I had a hot matcha latte and a smoked salmon quiche. The first thing I noticed about my daughter's iced matcha latte was that it was very powdery. I saw that the barista made the latte from scratch, mixing the matcha powder with milk, but it tasted overly strong with matcha. As for my quiche, it had been heated, but it was still cold on the inside. This place was a huge letdown for me. Sorry.

Visiting from Los Angeles and had to drop by. Saku Saku is an amazing Japanese French spot serving Matcha or Buttered Croissant soft-serve, hot and iced matcha lattes, Kouign Amann, pan, sandos, and damn delicious guava & passion fruit cruffins. I ordered the Kouign Amann, guava cruffins, passion fruit cruffins, matcha & cinnamon Mochi rolls, wagyu beef curry pan, and a wasabi Mayo sausage roll. Unfortunately my soft-serve order had to be refunded for my 8:15AM order, so I was unable to try it out. The machines need time to ready the product. Understandable. Who orders soft-serve in the morning besides foodies visiting from 2500 miles away, right? I was really happy with everything we ordered and I'm looking forward to coming back again. Definitely don't sleep on Saku Saku!

I've been wanting to try out Saku Saku Flakerie for the longest time and, coincidentally, when I came to the Union Farmers Market for TOIMOI bakery, I saw their newest outpost after deciding to take a stroll inside of Union Market. I decided to pick up a cinnamon roll that caught my eye because of the good amount of cream cheese on top. I will definitely come back again to try all the other items on display.

This was genuinely the WORST strawberry matcha latte I've ever had in my entire life. I hate to have such strong feelings about it but I don't know how a strawberry matcha could get worse with every sip. I feel like I need to warn everybody to get anything else besides their matcha. Although they were nice at the register, the barista take forever to make our drinks (legitimately 20+ minutes for our 3 drinks when it was only 2 girls ahead of us), the barista who made the drink seemed to have anger issues (at the drinks, not at customers). It was a little strange but nothing too alarming lol Anyways, the ice went in first, then strawberry compote for about 1/4 of the cup on top of the ice, then milk and then matcha on top. This created a really layered drink but there was wayyyy too much strawberry. The strawberry compote was bitter and lacked any sweetness - I've never had flavorless strawberries. It just tasted like straight strawberry stems. And the more you drank it, it got worse! I thought my drink (regular milk) was bad. My friend got oak milk with hers and her oak milk tasted even worse than mine! And we love oat milk! We did get a mochi dessert and it wasn't terrible. But genuinely - if you have a love for matcha, this place should be avoided like the plague

The canele was rubbery and chewy with an eggy aftertaste unlike the caneles we've had at the McLean location. Three in a group of five felt abdominal discomfort after having the pastries. The Rustic Boule, again something we've bought multiple times was doughier than usual, without the hearty pores and crust, like it was packed warm days ago. The saving grace was the pistachio orange blossom tart. Stars are for the tart and one of the guys at the counter who was kind enough to hold on to a sling bag the 7 year old left behind. What i did not anticipate was a half raw egg with the yolk swimming in a sea of translucent completely uncooked "whites". It was like a golden disc encased in a snot rocket. Ok, maybe that's their "runny". Slide it off the toast and press on - snail trail of mucus be damned. The avocado spread was great - bright, citrusy, and well seasoned. The "hot sauce" was likely from a bottle and could have been left off. The radishes would have benefitted from being tossed in lemon, salt and pepper.
