I've been looking forward to trying this place for quite some time. Today was the day and it was just mediocre Chinese food. Nothing really "wowed" me with my meal. I had general tso chicken lunch special and egg drop soup. While there was flavor, it was just your basic flavor and nothing is really setting them apart from other Chinese places in the area. I was so happy to stumble on this restaurant after missing eating good Asian food for several days. I was pleasantly surprised that the flavor and quality lived up to my expectations and palate! I can't speak on the ambiance or the service as we ordered it to be delivered but we were truly impressed by the food. It was flavorful and made just as intended. They gave ample sauces and everything was still a good temperature by the time it was dropped off at our door. My wife & I loved Spicy Home Tasty when it first opened in Commack. The parking lot is difficult to maneuver so we stayed local to East Setauket when craving Chinese food. When I read about another location, I said we should give it a try after work. The parking lot, there's a few spots by the front door but a huge lot out back. We're shown to a small two top by the window. We glanced at the menus and decided on our typical dinner: Shrimp Shumi, Orange flavored beef and sesame chicken. The food came out pretty quickly. The shrimp shumi had these teenie tiny shrimp inside the small dumplings. It had a weird mouth feel. The Tangerine Beef, it seems like the chefs working here never worked at the other location. The small pieces of chicken were over battered and the beef had a thick, gloppy sauce on it. It wasn't an enjoyable meal. The waiter came by and gave a steak knife to my wife and not to me? At this point, I want leave. The waiter never came back to check on us so we shared the knife... The interior of the restaurant. The size is the same as the commack restaurant? Last night, we heard a horrible crash, like a shelf collapsed and every dish broke. I noticed there are tables on a platform, an older gentleman stepped off and almost tripped. This is by far one of the best Chinese food places on Long Island. I moved further out east about 2 years back and was very upset at the quality (or lack thereof) of Chinese food places vs my prior spot. I've tried a new place each time in hopes of finding a decent one, though out east the options are limited and quality lacking, but thankfully now I've found my forever home. Food is always very fresh, prices and portions are very reasonable (especially for lunch specials), there are some very unique dishes that they offer, and the best part, the food is delicious. My favorites are the dry pepper chicken and curry chicken. But there are a lot of items in the menu and I've only been here a few times so far, so still have some trying out to do. All of the more common staples are very good too (chicken and broccoli, etc). Everything has been great, even the wonton and egg drop soup is fantastic (and seems much more authentic instead of the super yellow wontons and broth most places serve that taste like nothing and seem like it's been food colored). Even more, the food is always available very quickly. I once ordered online through yelp and yelp had an issue and needed to cancel my order, but I didn't find out until I got there. I placed the order again at the place (fairly large - 5 dishes) and it was ready in 10 minutes, it was super fresh and delicious, and they even threw in some edamame for free! Highly recommend stopping by and trying this place if you're nearby. I'm about 20-25 minutes further east, but it's well worth the drive. I've only ordered takeout so far, so can't speak to the ambiance or service sitting down in the restaurant, but it seems very clean and the staff at the counter is always very friendly. Decor is pretty nice too, it's a stark contrast from the rundown stores with printed faded pictures of menu items that looks like it hasn't been cleaned in years like most Chinese food places around here. So when we knew we would be in the area, we decided to give this one a try. Tuesday night, 6:30pm. Parking lot is sufficient with a few cars parked in front of the door. We walk in and there is an older gentleman sitting behind the counter. He looked up but didn't say anything until we said "can we sit?" He then nodded yes and pointed to the tables. Soooooo, we picked a large booth next to the windows and seated ourselves. It felt odd. The other 2 booths by the window were also occupied On every table were menus, a small dish with a napkin and a tea cup on top. Next to it was a fork and spoon. I don't like when dishes and utensils are already on the table unless wrapped in something. Who knows how long they've been sitting there. Upon turning my tea cup right side up, I noticed the napkin on top of the plate was a bit dirty...like it was placed after someone else decided not to fully use it. Other than that, the place seemed pretty clean. You could see and hear the kitchen through the door across from the table. No biggie, but the curtain covering it was like a bed sheet? Did not match the decor lol. The waitress came over and she brought a small dish of complimentary pickled cabbage (different) and hot tea. We were trying to ask her questions about so many things on the menu, but there was a big language barrier. We said that we did NOT want anything to be spicy. She then recommended spicy dishes. We asked about certain ingredients, but she didn't understand what we were asking. She was very sweet, but because of this, we had to stick to basic dishes. We ordered chicken and broccoli, pork fried rice and chicken with cashews. The 2 dishes came with a small bowl of rice on the side. We asked if we could omit them since we wanted to try the fried rice, but she insisted that it comes with each meal. I said, ok, then can I switch one to brown rice and she said yes. ($2.00 extra on the bill). The tea was very hot, which was nice on a blistery cold day but it had zero flavor. Not enough tea bags in the pot. We asked for water and we each got a glass. Thankfully because we needed it! The chicken and broccoli was ok. Nothing spectacular. The brown sauce was a bit thick and had overcooked scallions and garlic in it. A first for me. Some of the chicken was tough and some wasn't. The broccoli was fine. The chicken with cashews was actually Spicy chicken with Peanuts! There were spicy peppers throughout the dish, even though the dish was not marked spicy. She must have misunderstood and had them make it spicy. And I can't stand when they use peanuts! It's the cheap way and should say peanuts on the menu. Use cashews or dont call it that! My husband does not send things back so he just had to pick out the peppers, chug water and eat peanuts. The pork fried rice earned the stars believe it or not. It was not the nasty, yellow stuff with hard or fatty pieces of the red, sticky pork. It was actual fried rice with peas, carrots, onions, egg and tender pork slices, fried to a golden brown. I'm upset that I didn't get a picture but it was because it came late to the table. The food was also a bit salty. Portions were enough to share and/or take home. I asked about dessert but all they had was regular ice cream. We got a fortune cookie and a 50 dollar bill. (Goonies, Ha!) I really wanted this to be THE new sit down spot! It wasn't horrible, but it wasn't some place I'll be rushing back to. As someone who is quite picky when it comes to Chinese cuisine, I was pleasantly surprised by the quality and freshness of their dishes. Spicy Home Tasty 2 is serving authentic Szechuan style Chinese cuisine. SHT also has a very successful restaurant in Commack NY. It was formerly Tofu Restaurant. The only resemblance is the delicious quality dishes. They focus on serving fresh, healthy and natural dishes. Unlike Tofu you will not find sushi here. I will just have to accept it because I am hooked already. The staff was very welcoming and friendly. Daniel was our server and we could'nt be more pleased. Used to come this location years ago when it was To-Fu, but hadn't been back in many years. When Spicy Home Tasty II opened at this spot, we were looking forward to checking it out again (we enjoy the Commack location too). Parking is good, with enough space for the number of tables they have. The place is nicely lit, clean, and roomy. They have booths and tables, as well as large-party tables with dividers for a little privacy. The staff was attentive and accessible, even when they were clearly busy for New Years. The food came out quickly and did not disappoint. Seafood pan-Fried Noodles, Scallion Pancakes, Soup Dumplings (some of them stuck together and tore open, but the soup was on the plate so it was still retrievable :D ) West Lake Beef Soup - Amazing (good for 2) The standout was our Shrimp Dry Pot. it had huge pieces of wood ear mushrooms, bamboo shoots, and very big shrimp. The food is good, but many dishes, as warned on the menu, do have spice, so if you don't like spicy food, please let them know; otherwise, your dish will for sure have a kick to it. The restaurant is spacious and decorated like a buffet restaurant. We had the spicy cucumber for an appetizer and it was refreshing and flavorful. We also had the shrimp shumai and shrimp dumplings. They were odd and I don't recommend them. It tasted like the shrimp was imitation or very poor quality. The cold seasme noodles were delicious. We had the sao chicken, orange beef, eggplant dish, shrimp lo mein for our mains. Tge food was good but very saucy. The worst dish was the orange beef. We didn't even eat it and sent it back. It looked gross and was of poor quality drenched in sauce. The sao chicken was delicious. We also had the garlic shrimp and that was good. The food is decent but they really rely on the sauce here to carry their dishes. I don't recommend the shrimp appetizers or the beef dishes. When you order consider asking for less sauce. Enter Spicy Home Tasty 2 which is the more appealing of their two locations. I would challenge that your average native Long Islander even comprehends what quality Chinese food is and please don't feel I'm insulting anyone. We only know what we've grown up with. I've traveled the world and lived in 3 different states and need you to trust me and go visit Spicy Home. The food is fresh, I'll call it very clean and prepared nicely. The menu is broad and filled with your favorite traditional dishes and many Szechuan offerings along with authentic Chinese cuisine. The wonton soup is excellent and you will notice extremely flavorful without the oily residue most Chinese restaurants offer. Friday night we had the Tom Yum soup which is a Thai favorite. This was just amazing. In addition we ordered a traditional pork fried rice, a Szechuan Chicken Dish and a Szechuan Beef with spice peppers. The Rice, unlike your local stop was not yellow, sticky with little orange pork pieces, this was fried brown rice, fluffy and fried to perfection with lean pork strips. The Szechuan dishes were absolute meals of quality. They were not drowning in goopy sloppy sauce. The restaurant management and wait staff are pros and very knowledgeable. The ambiance in general is good but I feel it could use a bit more authentic Chinese art and decoration. I'm a big believer in setting the mood, so dim the lights, have authentic music playing and this place is a home-run. We got our drinks with a pot of tea and complimentary pickled salad instead of typical wonton crisps and duck sauce. For appetizers, we ordered the Honey Ribs and Fried Pork Dumplings. Ribs were sticky and sweet, perfectly charred. Pork dumplings were large and equally, perfectly fried all around, giving them a nice, crunchy bite. They were filled with a delicious pork mixture. My husband ordered the Pepper Steak for dinner with pork fried rice. The fried rice was nice and dark, with large pieces of pork meat. He enjoyed the tender, thinly sliced, flavorful pepper steak. I ordered the King of the Sea, which came with lobster, scallops, shrimp, and (imitation) crab meat in a brown sauce. Delicious! It's so hard to find really good, consistent Chinese food. Bon G. and I visited SHT in Farmingville yesterday to check it out vs the Commack location. Housed in the former Tofu location, it is literally the same as the other venue right down to the menu. When Commack first opened it was a Sechuan styled menu, now its primarily Cantonese with a page fo Sechuan and some Hot Pots. We ordered for appy the Dan Dan Noodles..disappointing in that it was just like cold sesame noodles, not in hot chili oil like we get in Flushing. For mains Bon got her standard Cumin Lamb... was very tasty but loaded with onions and other greens. I had the Mapo Tofu, my standard and it was pretty good. I ordered it hot and Mala..it was both. Overall the service was great and the place is clean. When craving Sechuan we will probably go to Spice Workshop Where traditional Sechuan reins supreme! I read the reviews and with the good and bad I decided to try it anyways. I found the food subpar. The fried rice had a different taste to it, kind of mushy and lacking that Chinese food "flavor". So bland without the pork. My homemade has more flavor but of course I haven't figured out how to get the Chinese food flavor. The sesame chicken flavor was ok but the chicken was stringy as I have found many Chinese restaurants serve stringy chicken usually due to over cooking it, and I'm use to it swimming in sauce but these pieces seemed to have been dipped, so lack of sauce is also a complaint. The spring roll was fine as spring rolls usually are. The wontons in the soup were soft and mushy, not firm as they should be. They don't give crispy noodles with the soup either. Honestly not impressed. Was a bit pricey too but would be willing to pay more for good quality food which this absolutely was not. Maybe their sushi is good but I didn't have it. We were debating ordering 2 dishes and I'm glad we didn't. We ordered a chicken dish hot and spicy- served in a huge bowl. Absolutely delicious!!!!! It was so tasty and the chicken, pieces of cabbage and whatever else that was in the dish was the tastiest dish I've ever had. The food here is the best in the area- hands down. The food is hit or miss and service is a big miss friendly & polite but one and only one server taking care of 7 tables of 4 people & clearing tables too ! COME ON ! This has happened the last three times we went ! This equals to a long time between dishes and services almost 1.5 hrs for an appetizer and 2 main dishes .Now we know it's an authentic Chinese restaurant but we ordered shrimp & lobster sauce with added garlic and ginger and the server confirmed with a quick yeah yeah 2x and lo and behold neither were in the dish ! What we received was 7 large flavorless shrimp half cleaned in a blah bland congealed sauce and we couldn't send it back we couldn't get the server's attention . This is a very simple dish that uses maybe 6 ingredients so easy you can make this at home in sauté pan . We also had their dry pot and a pork belly dish at a different visit and that was good but very salty no use in sending back cause it would take 20 minutes to get the server. This was literally the worst Asian food my family and I have ever had, and that is saying something. To start off, the wait was ridiculous. It was not busy, and I still had to wait a half hour for the food. I ordered the "pad Thai", my dad ordered the sesame chicken dinner combo that came with an egg roll and hot and sour soup, and my mom got the "vegetable" dumplings. They obviously overextend themselves with the size of their menu. The "pad Thai", the sesame chicken, the dumplings, the hot and sour soup and even the rice were absolutely flavorless. Literally tasteless. I don't even know how that's possible, it's actually kind of impressive how little flavor it all had. The spring rolls and egg roll were soggy and drenched in grease, even more so than is usual for Americanized Asian food. The "vegetable" dumplings had meat in them.
