This place was unbelievable and not in a good way. The "Bobby Flay" burger was good and the chicken sandwich my husband had was ok. The fries were also good. The service was the worse we ever had. I understand we had to wait and we did not have a problem with that but 10 minutes before they were going to sit us they had us sitting at a table in the bar area which was cold. If they were going to do that why have us wait at all when those tables were available when we got there. We wanted to sit in the main area since it was our first time there. While waiting two of the employees started arguing over something right there where customers could see and hear. We did sit at a table in the bar area but we had to ask for everything we needed including silverware, napkins, refills on our drinks, our check, etc. The bartender would have served us better if he would have stopped singing and just did his job. We did not go there to be entertained by somebody who thinks he can sing. If he could he would not be working in that dive. I really wanted to go for the ice cream but my god that really made me made when they sat the banana split for two on our table. I should have told him to return that crap. You would think for $9.95 you would get more then a few drops of hot fudge. You can see by the picture that there was very little ice cream for that price. I guess they threw all those cherries on to cover what they did not have. It was supposed to have other sauces on it but if they did it was drops. So we tried it once and will never go back again. The Riker's Island pizza was really good except the crust was buckling under the weight of the toppings and juices and grease. Very generous with the toppings. Crispier crust and this could easily be a fave spot. The large easily fed 4 people. The fried ravioli - those kinds of apps are typically throw away apps, but theirs tasted like they put effort into them - fried lightly and with care. Sunday brunch cocktails were very affordable less than $7 each. Vanilla ice cream mix was delicious and the pecan bar was good - small portion and served cool. Would be better hot. read more

The beer is overpriced in my opinion, but Mississippi's laws and taxes may be to blame for that. Other drink prices are standard. The pizza is okay. Maybe New York style ain't my thang. Honestly, I would prefer a fast food pizza (don't judge!), but it's a fun place to go with large groups. The porch is nice to sit on, and the service is amazing. This place has some awesome pizza! My personal tastes are a little boring (limited to meat/cheese for the toppings) but friends of mine are more experimental and seem to love nearly every pizza they come up with. The ice cream is incredibly good as well. The full bar adds a nice touch. My wife loves the "Uptown Barbie." The only drink I don't recommend ordering from Sal and Mookie's is a mojito. I've tried it a few times and it is consistently far too sugary. On every occasion the waiters/waitresses have been very friendly and timely, and the orders have always been correct. In town due to hurricane Ida. Walked here one night with the kids to order ice cream. It's feet from the hotel. Not only did we wait 30 minutes for 4 1 scoops desserts; 2 of 4 were wrong. I went just to get caramel added in my milkshake which I originally ordered. The young lady behind the corner was so incredibly rude about just adding caramel which I previous ordered and was missing. To be honest I didn't want the milkshake didn't really like taste but hey I wasn't going to ask for my money back just wanted the caramel. I'm only here until Monday thank God we can finally go home. While in the area I yelp searched pizza and place was one of the first couple that popped up. A local we met at the park highly recommended it. We went over for a late lunch after the museum and playing at the park. It's on a side street right next to the JSU stadium. The parking lot was nearly full when we arrived. We were greeted and seated immediately. The place is much larger than it appears. It looks like a big single story house with a wrap around porch. Brick floors, lots of wood, open visible kitchen, ample seating. Our server came over as soon as we were sat by the hostess. She was perky and friendly. After viewing the large menu for several minutes we went with a regular - 14 inch- Meat Packing District which includes: italian plum tomato sauce, mozzarella, pepperoni, spicy italian sausage, prosciutto, and genoa salami. The pizza came out far quicker than I expected. It was fresh from the oven. It looked awesome. Kids were pumped. It was excellent pizza. Good ingredients. The House made crust was really good with a soft buttered pretzel flavor and a nice chew. Ever so modest slightly charred areas. Great for young kids and for kids that typically don't eat the crust like my son. He ate his crust today! A regular was plenty for 2 adults and a small child. Daughter had an entire slice, son had 2 I had three. I didn't need 3 but I managed. In addition to pizza they have a huge menu. Italian favorites, burgers, salads.... My kids liked the in store ice cream stand. They had a couple dozen flavors of ice cream by the scoop and a large selection of toppings. Daughter went chocolate w m&ms son went with some specialty chocolate flavor. The manager came over and chatted me up a bit. Nice guy made some recommendations in the French Quarter - New Orleans our final stop Sunday afternoon. All in all a very good experience. If in the area I would absolutely recommend. Hands down, Sal & Mookie's serves up the best pizza in Jackson. The crust is perfect: crisp on the outside, chewy on the inside, and the ingredients are fresh and delicious. My husband and I custom order our own pizza: cheese with roasted red peppers, caramelized onions, and goat cheese. We'd really like Sal & Mookie's to put this on the menu and name it after us. :) We're also fans of the CBGB's (Italian plum tomato sauce, mozzarella, pepperoni, roasted garlic, and red onions). The menu is so extensive that you're sure to find something you like. It's on the pricey side for casual dining -- around $25 for a large pizza -- but we consider it a worthwhile and regular splurge. Sal & Mookie's is a great place to have a birthday party; I've held one of my own and have attended two friends' parties here. The restaurant has a lively, colorful family atmosphere, and the ice cream bar offers a broad selection. Eating on the patio is pleasant when the weather is nice. I've celebrated my past 3 birthdays here with my usual sorbet twist, wings, and salad! The wings don't even compare to anywhere else, literally this is the ONLY place I'll eat them. \ You walk in and can choose to sit in the bar area (P.I.E. Lounge), in the main dining area, or outside where you can either have a cool breeze in the Summer or heaters on full blast in the Winter. The wait is never too long and the hostesses seem to really value your time in getting you seated and served as soon as possible. You can finish up your meal with the ice cream bar just in the back corner - they will usually deliver to your table. Sal & Mookie's has authentic Italian pastas and pizzas. The ingredients, preparation, and service are first-rate. I had the pasta and meatballs; the sauce obviously prepared from scratch from somebody's mother's recipe and was finished with chopped fresh basil. My wife had the ominously-named Rikers Island pizza which had authentic Italian sausage and fresh toppings. She noted that it was grease-free and baked to perfection. Portion sizes are generous and prices are reasonable. The thing that I noticed most was the abundance and cheerfulness of the servers. Whoever is training and managing their team is doing things the right way. And they have spumoni ice cream! The only downside is that it is rather noisy. Lots of families enjoying a 1960's vibe. I would give this 3 1/2 stars, but I can't...their prices are particularly high. Their food is excellent, but I'm not sure $12 for a Stromboli is worth it. I got the chipotle chicken BBQ Stromboli because it was different, and man, was it good! My husband got the Cuban sandwich and has previously had the chicken parmigiana. They were both good, but not GREAT. I haven't tried their pizza, because I can't see paying $25 for a large pizza. The atmosphere is good and the staff was incredibly friendly and helpful. The atmosphere of the place is a good vibe. I really dig the Muffaletta Panini (muffaletta on the thin, pressed-grilled, focaccia bread). I wish they offered a cardboard grease catcher like in the bottom of a Pizza Hut box to absorb any grease from their Pizza. Everytime I've ordered any pizza with meat it's served on a metal pizza pan and once cut the grease collects on the pizza pan and thus continually soaks into the crust of the pizza, making the crust saturated with grease. I've much prefer it if they had some sort of grease catcher between pizza and pan. The ice cream is ok, not great. Great vibe with outdoor seating! My wife and I tried this place out 2 weekends ago and had a GREAT time. Of course we tried the pizza lol. We got a large pizza with white sauce (which I usually am not a fan of but this was really good), smoked gouda, pineapple and chicken. So good! We also ordered the chicken cacciatore (first time trying that as well) and that was even BETTER! We truly enjoyed ourselves. Hands down best gluten-free pizza I have ever had. Sal & Mookie's are very generous with toppings regardless of how many you add (I have never seen that at a pizza place; usually it's less ingredients added as you add them even though you are paying for them to add each ingredient). Not only is their pizza good, the employees are very friendly and considerate. Sometimes I feel insecure going out to restaurants because I have to be mindful of my food-allergies, but not at Sal & Mookie's; I always feel welcome and cared for when I order. I've been on the search to find my go-to pizza place in Jackson, and have been meaning to try Sal and Mookie's since friends always speak so highly of the place. Pros: - Came with my family at 5:30 on a Saturday. It was already starting to get packed, but we were seated quickly. Hostess was very kind and friendly, too. - The inside is bright, clean, and family friendly. I was expecting it to be more dive-y, so this was a pleasant surprise. - WINE!!!! OMG, WINE. AND COCKTAILS. I'm always super disappointed in many restaurants for only serving beer (boo, MS strict wine/liquor license laws!) and have almost come to expect most places to have just that. - The spinach salad was on point! Cons: - It's pretty loud in this place. Ambiance is fun but nothing special. Great for kids, though. - The pizza we got was pretty bland. It's like they didn't use any spices whatsoever on it. For what hype this place gets, I expected more adventurous flavors. Although Sal and Mookie's won't become "my" pizza place, I'll probably be back for a date night with baby in tow. Also, there are are so many wait staff but it's weird how so little gets done. However, the stromboli is AMAZING. AMAZING. The stromboli is so good that it outweighs all the service issues there. I visited Sal and Mookie's for the first time today while meeting friends from out of town. Both myself and my friends were very pleased with our experience. The business itself is very visually appealing with a spacious dining room and an outside deck that is an added bonus for gorgeous days filled with great beer and food. I myself didn't try the beer selection on this trip but they seem to have a pretty extensive collection. I love that they show you which beer pairs well with the food options. Speaking of the food, at first sight you might think that the prices are a little steep when in reality you get a decent amount of food for the price so it's worth it! The lunch special, which is what I ended up getting, was VERY reasonably priced for a slice of pizza and a salad. The slices of pizza are true New York slices (From what I've gathered from TV and friends' NY experiences) as big as two and a half slices from a chain restaurant. As far as their salads go, I have to say that Sal and Mookie's has the absolute BEST Caesar salad (dare I say) I've ever had! The dressing was tangy and garlicky which is the way I prefer my Caesars with plenty of dressing left over to dip my big a** slice of pizza into! The staff was very friendly and helpful as well which made for a pleasant dining experience. I am looking forward to coming back and trying the different pizza varieties and the only reason I didn't give it a full five stars is; I haven't experienced enough of their cuisine to go stark raving mad but I fully intend to return and change my rating once I've tried the beer and pizza combos that caught my eye today! read more

The food here is excellent however our experience was not good. We walked in at 4:00 pm on a Sunday afternoon. We seated ourselves and after 10min I went and got menus. There were 15 four tops seated, two servers and they were confused as to who needed to do what... management needs to tighten up and properly schedule wait staff. I've eaten here several times, but today was the first time in about 2 years. The service was decent, but it took nearly 25 minutes to have our appetizer brought to the table, and the restaurant was nearly empty. Our beer was FLAT. Enough said there. Then, our pizza arrives. We were starving at this point, and dove into our meal, only the realize that the ham (or pastrami?) on our Nola Central Grocery pizza was rancid. We stopped eating, and both came home with sick stomachs. I love eating at this restaurant, but I really can't deal with food that's gone bad.
