We dropped in to Sal Tang's on one of their last days open with this concept. They had some notable Nom Wah classics like the giant egg roll, and a lot of Canto Chinese American dishes, some better than others. Our favorites were the ribs, scallion pancake with short rib, pork fried rice. Dishes like the crab mozzerella sticks were just OK. Services was great, drinks were good. I was in Brooklyn with my brother to see a concert and we decided to grab some dinner beforehand. He knows BK better than I do, and suggested we go to Sal Tang's based of the good experiences he's had at the owner's other establishments. I was game, so we made plans here for an early dinner. It wasn't just my brother who was familiar with the owner Sal Lamboglia's restaurants- I dined at his nearby restaurant Swoony's and remember having a good meal. Sal Tang's is a different concept and draws inspiration from Chinese American cuisine. We got there right at opening so the restaurant was not crowded. It's a decent size with one main dining room that contains several tables and a large bar. Decor is inoffensive - the most noteworthy thing being old school bright yellow tables that add a pop of color. The menu is separated into apps (with a separate dim sum section), mains, and rice/noodles; we decided to split two apps and two entrees since we each wanted to check out multiple offerings. We decided to start with the pork dumplings and crab rangoon mozzarella sticks. The dumplings were excellent - a generous filling of tasty seasoned pork and fried perfectly. Honestly it was one of the best dumplings I've had...ever. The crab rangoon mozz sticks were interesting; I'm not a big fan of crab rangoon to begin with, and I don't like pairing seafood with cheese but these were not bad. This is more of a me thing though - the quality was there so if you're a fan of these flavors they would be a hit. For mains we split the sesame chicken cutlet and the beef with broccoli. The chicken was pretty special - it was covered in the traditional sauce used for sesame chicken but it still maintained a crispy exterior and juicy center. The sesames encrusted on the cutlet added a welcome extra layer of flavor - this was a yes. The beef and broccoli was good, albeit a bit standard - nothing to rave about but also nothing bad to say about it either. We also decided to try their lemonades - I got the hibiscus limeade which was pretty good; I didn't taste too much lime and the drink was unexpectedly heavier than I thought but it was a unique treat nonetheless. Service was good - everyone was friendly and food was served at a good pace. Overall, I enjoyed my experience at Sal Tang's. I wouldn't necessarily go out of my way to come back, but I'm a sucker for sit-down Chinese American restaurants and would definitely return if I'm in the area again. read more

It's a shame this place is closing down soon, I went for the first time and felt so refreshed by the atmosphere. It reminded me of some Philly restaurants that toe the line of kitschy, retro, and upscale. The fusion comes through in the décor -- a light-filled almost diner-like space with nods to classic Chinese American restaurants -- as well as in the food, with super-sized egg rolls (my favorite dish of the night) and hot honey shrimp. The tofu was so soft yet had the slightest crisp on the outside, and was very flavorful. We shared 3 entrees among 3 people and it was the perfect amount of food. The lo mein was just fine, nothing spectacular. I did like the crispy batter on the shrimp and the sweetness, and the lychee martini was perfect and not too sweet or too strong. But I can't say I'd recommend this place for the food particularly, it didn't blow me away. It's the 80s hits playing and the cafeteria cups, the cozy details in the dining room, the excitement I felt about a truly novel dining experience without being pretentious or exclusive. Sal Tang's serves favorite Chinese comfort food and snacks and is a popular destination in the Cobble Hill neighborhood in Brooklyn. It was busy when we came here for Sunday dinner and was unable to accommodate us inside even when it was raining (we had booked for outdoor dining). Our group shared some appetizers such as scallion pancakes and cucumber salad with a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc. The cucumber salad was light and very refreshing. We then ordered four dishes and shared them family-style. We had beef and broccoli, crispy branzino with black bean sauce, their signature sesame chicken cutlets, cumin lamb over rice, sautéed pea shoots, and shrimp fried rice. Overall, the dishes are decent and with good portions. The dishes are served in a timely fashion, and we enjoyed every single dish that was presented to us. We had a lovely time here. With good food and awesome customer service, you won't be embarrassed to recommend this place to family and friends. read more

Came here with author Grace Lin because a colleague said this place reminded her of her book CHINESE MENU. It delivered! Loved the vibe, loved the food. The crab rangoon mozzarella sticks were really special. Real crab! We also ordered the spicy pork wontons and the scallion pancakes as apps. The wontons were just the right amount of spicy for me. Great little spot nestled in Carroll Gardens, bordering Cobble Hill - great area. The Short Rib Pancake is a great App to share, as is the cold peanut noodles. We enjoyed the Chicken with Garlic, Chicken Cutlet with Sesame Sauce and Beef and Broccoli dishes - all very tasty with a sharing of pork fried rice. The service was awesome - the manager was super friendly - letting us know about their other ventures - Swoony's (American) and Cafe Spaghetti (Italian) all nearby and operated by owner / chef Sal Lambroglia (Wilson Tang co-owns Sal Tang's). We sat in the entrance foyer location, which was fine, but around the corner is the main bustling dining room - packed on this early November Friday evening. Totally enjoyed our experience! I decided to come to try this restaurant before they close for good on Aug 1. The menu looks good I thought I might try a few things. Unfortunately I have a shellfish allergy which prevented me from ordering some of the food like the crab Rangoon mozzarella sticks or the egg rolls. I like how the bartender was friendly and accommodating when I asked if I can get the lychee lemonade in a tiki mug. So, I found a bunch of negatives with the food itself but not the food I ordered. The price to portion size looks stingy and needs to be better especially when you are in NYC and there's so many restaurants serving the same or similar food with better prices and more food. There were food on the shellfish free menu that wasn't available anymore which I found disappointing like the dumplings. For example, $28 for the short rib scallion pancake seems high especially when you can get the scallion pancake plain for $9. I saw someone nearby ordered the lo mein and the portion looks small for $15 or $22 for beef and why isn't on a plate? The food I ordered is the spicy pork ragu fettuccine which I liked a lot. It wasn't too spicy and they served it on a long plate rather the same metal bowl they used for the lo mein. I think there was a bone in the dish or it could have been the garlic not sure. I like the fusion of Italian and Chinese flavors in the dish. I do hate how long I waited for the dish. I felt like I waited 20-25 mins for single plate of pasta but I saw how small the kitchen and how busy the place during dinner service so I wasn't too upset about it. Overall, I think it's a fine one and done restaurant and I honestly don't miss this restaurant even if wasn't closing for good. It's a 15 min walk from the nearest subway for a restaurant that serves overpriced Chinese food with stingy portion sizes. I had my second visit here last night after a really good first trip a few months ago. Unfortunately, it didn't live up to that first trip. The service has gotten a little slower. Drinks were taking 8-10 minutes to come out. Check-ins were erratic and seemed to improve toward the end once other servers started checking in and helping the initial server. The food was hit-or-miss, unlike last time, when everything was above par. The dumplings were delicious, especially the spicy pork. The hot honey shrimp and broccoli were also exceptional, as usual. However, the beef and broccoli were bland, and the crab Rangoon mozzarella stick wasn't very good at all. Mozzarella cheese has too much flavor to be paired with the crab, unlike cream cheese in the original. Our first trip brought us back. In my mind, some of my fondest memories is my extended family ordering take out Chinese food. Growing up in Brooklyn, I swear we had the best of everything! My grandparents would order a feast and we never had leftovers. For my 6th grade graduation, I said I wanted to go to Chinatown for moo shu pancakes. This is how we adopted Chinese food into our culture. Now? Everything sucks on Long Island. Order spaghetti with marinara sauce and I get egg noodles with ketchup. Are you feelin' me yelper? The moment I read about Sal Tangs, I knew my wife would be excited as well to try this new spot. We walked in at 5pm without a reservation and were seated pretty quickly. Look at the menu pic I posted, it straight out of old school Brooklyn. The bar is a nice size with room for about 10 people. This isn't a large dining area but they can make it work for a large party. Make reservations! What impressed me the most was the egg rolls. These egg rolls were MASSIVE! Inside was large pieces of ground pork, fresh ginger and cabbage, all wrapped in the crunchiest shell. And the duck sauce?! C'mon, do you think Sal Tangs is messing around with plastic packets? The duck sauce was homemade. Soooo good! We also ordered the fried pork dumplings but I wasn't as excited. My wife ordered Branzino with burnt soy? Sal, awesome job on the fish. They got all the bones and the sauce was dynamite. I ordered General Tso's but it's sesame chicken with a few peppers. This was not an overbattered and fried mess. My friend had been wanting to try this place for the longest time, so we ordered a bunch of dishes to share and honestly... it was pretty disappointing. The only two dishes we really enjoyed were the Crab Rangoon Mozzarella Sticks and the Shrimp Dumplings. Both had great flavor and were easily the highlights of the meal. Everything else just fell flat. The Sesame Chicken was bland, the String Beans lacked seasoning, and the Cold Noodles didn't have the punch or balance of flavors you usually expect from a good version of the dish. Overall, most of the food felt under-seasoned and forgettable. It's always a letdown when you order a spread hoping to find a few favorites, but only two dishes really stand out. Finally a Chinese sit-down restaurant in the neighborhood of Cobble Hill. I came on their grand opening day to an elevated Chinese-American restaurant. There was no wait at 6pm when I stopped by, but when I came back at 7pm, we had to wait 45 minutes until we got seated. They do have a small waiting area where you can have some drinks. I ended up trying all three cocktails on the menu: Lychee Martini ($16), Sunset Spritz ($14), and Golden Vesper ($15) while the fiance had the Black Duck Porter ($10). The lychee was absolutely delicious that I could've easily had so many of these; it's sweet, refreshing, and got me a good buzz. I found the golden vesper came with a bitter aftertaste, but decent. I'd pass for the sunset spritz, but I'm not a spritz girly. For food, we started off with a Hot & Sour Soup ($6) and Salt & Pepper Chicken Wings ($13). Both of these were delicious and flavorful. Nothing is more comforting than a hot and sour soup while the wings were crispy and flavorful --extra delicious considering I usually prefer a saucy wing to dry-rub. I would order both of these again. For the main entrees, we got the Sweet & Sour Pork ($20) and General Tso's Sesame Chicken ($22) with a side of White Rice ($2). Both of these dishes were saucy, which made them taste quite similar. The portions are pretty small, especially for the price. I was underwhelmed by the repeating flavor though and wished I ordered a different item. Unfortunately, these items were recommended by our waiter since our party had a shellfish allergy, so we were a bit more limited. Sadly, these two dishes fell a bit short for me. At the end of the meal, we were given a classic fortune cookie. Overall, the meal was decent but I found everything too pricey. I grew up eating Chinese food, so this felt catered to the non-Asians in the neighborhood. I appreciate the welcome to Cantonese food in the neighborhood, but hope to see more variety in the future with better pricing. read more

**Long Read** so bummed the menu has taken off general tso sesame chicken and chicken wings,, I was looking forward to trying those two items! But the bbq pork ribs and immaculate friendly restaurant staffs, did indeed make up for it just a bit. The ribs were tender and sweet glazed. Two individual bathrooms with the vacant/occupied mechanism my favvvv type of door indication. My favorite dish of the night was the gigantic egg roll, it came pipping hot and remained that way throughout, while the other dishes got cold fast. Oh that lychee cocktail was so yummy we got a second. Beef broccoli was good with crunchy broccoli but feels kinda heavy, I asked for chili oil to help out the dish. Sweet and sour pork looked like chicken but we liked the vegetables in it, esp the chinese celery. Fried rice didn't have that wok smell i was looking for and the shrimp wasnt very seasoned nor charred. Hot and sour soup was yummy filled with ingredients and just right for me. complimentary scallion pancake from the nice staffs, but did not taste crispy. The blood orange sorbet....... was sooooo sweet we were not sure if it's added sugar or that's how sweet the orange itself was! This neighborhood needed a sit down Chinese restaurant and so glad the food is awesome. The portions are on the smaller side should it's better to go with a group and order several dishes. The crystal shrimp dumplings and crispy orange beef are the best dishes on the menu. We ordered the wings, egg roll, shrimp dumpling, sesame chicken, branzino, fried rice and bok choy. Egg roll was good but kinda pricy at $7 for one, I prefer my sesame chicken with white meat but it was still good. Fried rice and bok choy were also good. I used to come to this spot back when it was called Veksler's, and I'm really enjoying the newly redesigned vibe and format of Sal Tang's. The space feels refreshed but still welcoming, and the food definitely impressed. We started with the crab rangoon, which was a standout--easily the best I've had, especially since it was made with real crab. The egg roll was another favorite: generously packed with meat rather than being mostly cabbage like most places. The shrimp dumplings were top 3 material--flavorful, perfectly cooked, and beautifully plated. The short rib pancakes were dense, rich, and delicious. The sesame chicken cutlet with General Tso's sauce was solid, though it didn't quite stand out as much as the other dishes. We also got the pea shoots which were good but nothing surprising. Why 4 stars instead of 5? The drink menu fell short. The beer and wine selection was underwhelming, and the cocktails leaned way too sweet for my taste. Next time I'll probably stick with a classic martini or Manhattan. That said, the service was great. Even though the kitchen got backed up and there was a ~45-minute gap between apps and mains, the staff was attentive and friendly the whole time. I had dinner at Sal Tang's on Saturday and everything was absolutely delicious. When we got there our table wasn't ready but that was okay because we were able to get drinks at the bar and they transferred the bill to our table once they were ready to seat us. I got the Mai tai and my Bf got the lychee martini, both delicious. We only waited 10 min max. For food we ordered the wonton chips and pork dumplings for appetizers. For entrees we got the fried rice, branzino, and chicken with garlic sauce. Everything was so tasty and flavorful and the portions were just perfect for Two people. Both my bf and I were full and satisfied after our meal. I wanted to love Sal Tang's so so much but it fell short of expectations. The appetizers were fantastic (shrimp dumplings, egg roll and scallion pancakes). The cocktails were average (weirdly served in wine glasses and were just not elevated with quality ingredients). The main courses were just not good (sweet n sour pork, the beef and a garlic chicken). The meat was so tough and dried out - maybe that's the style of cooking? The sauces were way too basic. I think I would try the vegetarian options because the meat was so unfortunately prepared. I would definitely try the hot and sour soup based on the reviews. read more
