How have I never heard of this place until now?? I was kind of dreading making the trek to Cobble Hill, but I was so pleasantly surprised at how good the food was. The first plus was that we didn't need to make a reservation for a group of four on a weekday night. The second was that their happy hour goes pretty late - until 6:30PM. We ordered soup dumplings, dan dan noodles, hot and sour soup, beef dry pot, and kung pao chicken. The soup dumplings had a delicious broth and the ground pork was extremely flavorful. The hot and sour soup invoked nostalgic memories for me, as it reminded me of the best one I had growing up in California. The dan dan noodles had a delicious spice that was complimented with the schezuan peppercorn for a little bit of numbness. The beef dry pot was AMAZING. Make sure to specify the spice level. It was definitely hot, but still delicious. The beef was so tender and not dried out or chewy. The vegetables made a hearty companion to the meat. In a neighborhood where Chinese options are largely limited to fast casual and ancient takeout spots, this solidly classy sit-down Szechuan space has been a welcome addition for the past few years. The food is mostly of excellent quality, and the service is better than the Chinatown spots of my youth would have me expect. This is not the place for General Tso's chicken. They specialize in proper Szechuan cuisine. Accordingly, the mapo tofu is the real deal, spicy and excellent. I'm always happy to get it, and my shirt never is. The Chungking Chicken is a winner, and I'm always happy to eat the dan dan noodles. I have yet to try the Kung Pao, but I've heard good things. The starters are also of good quality. Scallion pancakes are awesome, soup dumplings, although Shanghaiese, are still quite good (although better ones can be had for cheaper a few blocks north at Nan Xiang), and the wontons in chili oil are great. Speaking of which, ask for some chili oil and use it liberally to punch anything up, especially the Stewed Fish with Vegetables, which is an excellent choice if your mom also can't handle the heat. I like how the lunch specials come with some pickled veggies. I like pickled things. There's a full bar, and even a negroni on the happy hour menu that I haven't been brave enough to try it yet. We came here for dinner during the winter restaurant week which is a steal for 5 courses and 2 drinks for $60. I really enjoyed the strong tea flavor but a little too sweet. The appetizers were the star of the show. Everything was cooked well, there just needs to be some adjustments to seasonings and the amount of sauce for some dishes. The service was quick and easy. Since the tables were small, the waiters were good at removing empty dishes as we finished so we had a little more space to work with. The dishes came out continuously and timely and we didn't have to wait long for the next course. Then we also got the Spicy Cumin Lamb ($26) with Rice ($2) and Szechuan Beef Noodle Soup ($16). The food is super authentic and spicy as Szechuan food should be. I loved how tender the beef is on the noodle soup, which was comforting and packed with chili. The lamb were good too, but that was too pricey for me, especially since rice was extra.
