Happy Hour Sangria at the bar
    Danielle P.

Came to Sala to grab some happy hour sangrias on a weeknight. I'd been meaning to try the restaurants that have opened on this block but just hadn't gotten around to it, and was pleasantly surprised to see how nice the inside of Sala is. Low lit but still bright, comfortable bar stools, definitely a romantic vibe. Their website said sangrias were $6 on happy hour, but be aware that it's actually now up to $8. I was a little bummed at the increase, but boy were these strong. Honestly the most potent sangria I think I've ever had in my life. It was just the right balance of fruit, not too much ice but ice cold. The bartender was attentive and checked in on us frequently without being too overbearing. I can't speak to the food, but will for sure be back.

Stopped in for some food and drinks one evening after work and had a wonderful experience! The staff is very friendly and accommodating, and the food was delicious - I had the fried goat cheese and the pan tumaca and enjoyed them both.

Great tapas, dishes, vino and cocktails at Sala Astoria. The live music and Flamenco shows add to the atmosphere!

How have I not been here before?! Amazing service and amazing food. Came in on Saturday without a reservation and got lucky to be seated within a few minutes. The restaurant has plenty of seating, offering high tops, bar, and traditional tables. The vibe inside is reflective of the Spanish culture with lively music and decor. For drinks, we ordered a pitcher of sangria as we felt it was a good deal. We noticed other patrons ordering cocktails and they looked tantalizing. Definitely trying next time. For tapas we got the Pulpo, Calamari, Gambas and Croquettes de Gambas. All were great dishes and highly recommend. The Pulpo was perfectly cooked and seasoned. The Gambas was fragrant and spicy, wasn't served with bread had to ask. The calamari was lightly breaded which is a plus. The croquettes were mini but full of flavor. Ended our meal with Churros con Chocolate. The restaurant offers many specials during the week like paella specials which I am looking forward to trying.

All night happy hour on Mondays! (5 pm to close). Came here because 1) open Mondays and 2) happy hour. Beautiful large space, somewhat new building/development in Astoria. 2 people on a Monday holiday evening. We each had a couple glasses of wine (did I mention happy hour?) and shared some bites. Good food and portions, but they seemed short-staffed. We had to wait a while to get attention etc. I would come back for happy hour and food again.

Came back and just had to share the food. Had some repeat plates but tried new ones as well. The lechon was out of this world. Staff again super attentive and welcoming. Love the vibes. Will need to come back for the paella.

Gin cocktail, octopus & the garlic shrimp

Came here last night to grab tapas and a drink with a friend and honestly, we were not disappointed. The bartender was amazing and he was really good at making the drink. I forgot the name of my gin cocktail, but it was so good. I absolutely loved the octopus. It had a hint of Indian flavor since they had a green chutney sauce on top. The shrimp was good as well!

Lovely space, very bright and buzzy. Paella was delicious, as well as the croquettes. Pleasantly surprised with the goat cheese with figs, probably one of the best bites of the night.

Delicious and just the right amount of heat in this Spanish restaurant. The cuisine is traditional but seems they add their style to each dish. Always check the daily specials - they are too tempting to pass up. A must try is the sangria!! The staff is friendly and helpful if you have trouble choosing. The atmosphere is comfortable and modern.

Entraña a la brasa (hangar steak)

We came here for dinner with family and the restaurant was conveniently accessible from the subway which is a plus! Since we were a group of 6, tapas were perfect since we could share and try a lot of different things together. We ordered the datiles (bacon wrapped dates with almond), chorizo a la plancha, gambas al ajillo (shrimp with garlic), pan tumaca con jamon (rustic bread with Iberico ham), confit de pato con patatas (duck confit with potatoes), 2 person paella de mariscos (seafood paella), albondigas (meatballs), pisto manchego (Spanish ratatouille), lubina a la plancha (grilled branzino) and the entraña a la brasa (hangar steak).  For dessert we got the Tarta Santiago (a Galician almond cake) and Manzana Asada (roasted apple with puff pastry and spices). We managed to each get a taste of everything!  We were certainly stuffed at the end.  The chorizo was definitely one of the highlights and the paella was a bit sad and small (even for 2 people).  I had never tried the Spanish ratatouille before but it tasted as it looked (soft vegetables cooked in olive oil).  Overall it was a solid meal and the ambiance was nice as well.  Would definitely come back and try other menu items with a group!

Always such a good time. Alex was great to us. We appreciate the hospitality. This time we went for dinner and everything was 10/10. It was all delicious. Fav drink: Malaga nights !

Easily would come here again! I came on a Saturday night and had a great time. The staff was super polite and helpful in recommending food. We tried and loved: the fried goat cheese (queso de cabra con miel), steak with onion crostini (hangar a la plancha), and the braised beef cheeks with mashed potatoes (carrilleras de ternera). All of these were very tender, perfectly seasoned, and had pleasing textures. The cocktails offered are complex in flavor and strong. I really liked the White Shoes cocktail. Sala also has a trendy and romantic vibe to it, perfect for a date night!

Came here on a Friday and the service was awesome. We sat at the bar for happy hour and got some drinks. The cocktails were made perfectly and the service was super attentive and friendly at the bar. The espresso martini had had shaved chocolate on it and that was a great touch. We migrated over to tables for dinner and had some of their tapas and they were delicious.

We did see some big groups in there so I think it's pretty good for groups and for dates as well. We were not super hungry so we decided to get three dishes and one dessert to share. -Ahi Tuna Canario: This was just alright, a little on the sour side due to the sauces they used. The tuna was pretty fresh and they had fresh avocado underneath. -Croquetas Setas: Mushroom croquetes - this was also just alright, comes with three pieces. Very fried and crispy. -Chicken Wings: This was pretty decently, the flavors were good but nothing too special -Turron: This dessert was so good - highly recommend. It was the best item we had tonight, the cake was so good and the ice cream went so well with the cake. Overall - I think that there are other better restaurants in the area but they do have a lot of other tapas that we did not try.

Though they didn't serve the sprite-infused red wines I enjoyed in Spain, they did serve white sangrias, which were light, sweet, and very enjoyable. The toasted bread with tomatoes was bright and summery. While the food was Spanish, the prices certainly were not! It was a tad pricey. There wasn't anything below $13 for their small bites. Regardless of the hot weather, I decided on a table outside. Each bite of the tapas was delightful for what it was and I ended up ordering an extra tapa because I couldn't make up my mind. I chose the shrimp in garlic sauce (oil) that I sopped up with the accompanied bread, the dates wrapped in bacon (they do their own twist by filling it with honey ricotta stuffing and finishing it with a red wine reduction), I also went with cod fish croquettes (the perfect crispness on the outside and a delectable creamy texture of fish inside), I can never pass up the patatas bravas, so, I got those too. I had a glass of a beautiful, crisp, white Chardonnay off the menu from Spain. Definitely a must try if you are looking for a quick meal for one. We decided to share a few sandwiches - the Black Angus Burger with fries and the Crispy Chicken Sandwich with a side salad. I took my first bite of the burger and my eyes opened wide - what an incredible flavor! The first thing you notice is the rich flavor of the angus beef - it's unique! The meat was tender and juicy - it had tomato and lettuce - I added only ketchup. It was one of the most delicious burgers I've had in some time. The French Fries were excellent with a great taste and fry! Next up the Crispy Chicken Sandwich. I was a little apprehensive when I saw the Ciabatta bun - having fried chicken on such a hard crusted, chewy bread. It wasn't the best choice for this sandwich. My partner and I both felt the chicken was 'hiding' behind the dressings - tomato, thick avocado and chipotle aioli - we opted out of the Applewood smoked bacon, which would have made the chicken more obscure. I opened the sandwich and took out a large piece of chicken to really 'taste it'. It had a great exterior crunch, was tender and juicy. It may have been flattened a little. It was a good sandwich, but if it had been on a brioche roll without the avocado, I believe it would have been more of a true crispy chicken sandwich. The little side salad we had was yummy with a very good balsamic vinaigrette. Overall, Bocado was a delightful lunch - the Black Angus Burger is a must!! I'll most definitely be back to enjoy it again!

The ambience is classy and soothing, not too loud, even as they got busier later in the evening. Overall a perfect experiene. I will definitely be making Bocado my weekend go-to!

But after trying their cuisine, this restaurant became more than just a place to watch a mini concert, glass of wine in hand. My favorite dish here is their carbonara, and I dare say, it may be the best carbonara I've ever had. The pasta is wonderfully creamy with generous bits of guanciale. I mean, just look at this beauty - it's glistening! As though this dish weren't creamy enough, it's topped with a half cracked egg, the yolk a vibrant orange. The idea here is that you incorporate the yolk into the pasta while it's still warm. This is a French restaurant after all, so I will warn you that the service here is quite European. From my experience sitting at the bar, the server won't fuss over you as you dine, and if you needed anything, you would have to flag him down. It's not an issue to me. The only…read morereason I return is because it's my grandmother's preferred restaurant since she lives nearby. We arrived around 6:20-6:30 p.m. There were plenty of open tables, but we weren't seated until much later. During that time, the male waiter seemed more concerned with other tasks. He was seating a woman whose party of six hadn't yet arrived, going back and forth to the kitchen, handing out receipts, and collecting menus. After all of that, he finally approached us--not to seat us--but to ask, "How long are you going to take?" I replied, "Sir, we're here to eat." He responded that the side tables were for people watching the game. I explained that we were there to dine, as this is a restaurant. Even after we were seated, he avoided our table completely. He took the order of a table that had been seated after us while we continued waiting. About 20 minutes later, a female waitress noticed we had not been helped and took over our table. She was attentive, professional, and the only reason we received service. After placing our order, we waited about an hour for our entrées. The food was also underwhelming. The Papa a la Huancaína came with an excessive amount of sauce and very few potatoes. The Ceviche Mixto lacked the bright citrus flavor that ceviche should have. My grandmother, who is very familiar with Peruvian cuisine, found it bland, and even after taking it home we couldn't improve it. The Bistec Encebollado was slightly too salty for our taste. The beans simply weren't to my liking, though that's a matter of personal preference. Another issue is the dining room layout. The seating is extremely tight, to the point where it feels like you're almost elbow-to-elbow with the tables next to you, making the experience feel cramped. Overall, this visit was disappointing. Between the slow and inattentive service, the long wait for food, the cramped seating, and several disappointing dishes, the experience did not justify the visit. The female waitress deserves recognition for stepping in when we had been overlooked, but unfortunately she couldn't make up for the rest of the experience.
