I been to sala about 4 times already. I was thinking I did a review already but no.So after a bad experience at melrose ballroom I ended up at this Restaurant. We were greeted and welcomed. I love their drinks and fresh food. They had the futbol game so that was a plus. We had a few entries and ENJOYED A drink called white shoes made with mexcal. Its really good. A friend & I were having such a bad night at an event we went to for one of the FIFA matches at a place called Melrose Ballroom. Ghetto ugh We left during half time & were walking aimlessly trying to find another spot to finish watching the game. We were literally trying to peek inside Sala to see if they had a TV with the game on & a gentleman who works here opened the door & asked if we needed anything, welcoming us in off the street lol This was perfect !! He sat us down, told us to enjoy the game with no worries. We drank, ate & had such a good time! The vibe in here was perfect! 3.5 stars for the slow service since it was cinco de mayo and although they're usually busy, it was really packed even before 7pm. Only one waitress, one bartender? It's a fairly large restaurant. We ordered cocktails, few tapas and the steak. I would've ordered another entree but they were out of dish after dish that I would've tried.. well it turned out to be enough food since the omelette dish was so dense and I filled up on bread. The best dish was the shrimp with garlic tapa which I usually wouldn't bother ordering but I've already tried most of the menu. Lots of garlic. Really tasty ..dipped the oil with the bread. We were sitting there for a while, waiting for our drinks and other food but nothing came out so I wanted more bread since I was starving. My first meal that day. One the guys brought more bread for us quickly. The steak and omelette finally came. I would never order the omelette dish but L wanted to try it and it was tapas Tuesday so there was a slight discount. Very bland. Not enough egg, too much potato, very dry so we spooned a lil of the garlic oil from the shrimp dish and it helped a lot. I had a lil but L ate the rest. Salad was good but it was overdressed. The steak was a lil bit bloody in the middle even though we ordered it medium so it wasn't as good as we had it before. We still didn't get our cocktails because the bartender lady kept making margaritas which were only $5 that day instead of our $17 drinks. Someone came past 7:30pm and our waitress said he was gonna make our drinks. The drinks were pretty good but we already finished our food. Usually I would have ordered one of each cocktail at Sala but I was full and had other places to go. The slow service and the unavailability of certain dishes has impacted my recommendation to others but I still like the drinks here and we did enjoy the gambas tapa dish a lot.. read more

Came to Sala to grab some happy hour sangrias on a weeknight. I'd been meaning to try the restaurants that have opened on this block but just hadn't gotten around to it, and was pleasantly surprised to see how nice the inside of Sala is. Low lit but still bright, comfortable bar stools, definitely a romantic vibe. Their website said sangrias were $6 on happy hour, but be aware that it's actually now up to $8. I was a little bummed at the increase, but boy were these strong. Honestly the most potent sangria I think I've ever had in my life. It was just the right balance of fruit, not too much ice but ice cold. The bartender was attentive and checked in on us frequently without being too overbearing. How have I not been here before?! Amazing service and amazing food. Came in on Saturday without a reservation and got lucky to be seated within a few minutes. The restaurant has plenty of seating, offering high tops, bar, and traditional tables. The vibe inside is reflective of the Spanish culture with lively music and decor. For drinks, we ordered a pitcher of sangria as we felt it was a good deal. We noticed other patrons ordering cocktails and they looked tantalizing. Definitely trying next time. For tapas we got the Pulpo, Calamari, Gambas and Croquettes de Gambas. All were great dishes and highly recommend. The Pulpo was perfectly cooked and seasoned. The Gambas was fragrant and spicy, wasn't served with bread had to ask. The calamari was lightly breaded which is a plus. The croquettes were mini but full of flavor. All night happy hour on Mondays! (5 pm to close). Came here because 1) open Mondays and 2) happy hour. Beautiful large space, somewhat new building/development in Astoria. 2 people on a Monday holiday evening. We each had a couple glasses of wine (did I mention happy hour?) and shared some bites. We came here for dinner with family and the restaurant was conveniently accessible from the subway which is a plus! Since we were a group of 6, tapas were perfect since we could share and try a lot of different things together. We ordered the datiles (bacon wrapped dates with almond), chorizo a la plancha, gambas al ajillo (shrimp with garlic), pan tumaca con jamon (rustic bread with Iberico ham), confit de pato con patatas (duck confit with potatoes), 2 person paella de mariscos (seafood paella), albondigas (meatballs), pisto manchego (Spanish ratatouille), lubina a la plancha (grilled branzino) and the entraña a la brasa (hangar steak).  For dessert we got the Tarta Santiago (a Galician almond cake) and Manzana Asada (roasted apple with puff pastry and spices). We managed to each get a taste of everything!  We were certainly stuffed at the end.  The chorizo was definitely one of the highlights and the paella was a bit sad and small (even for 2 people).  I had never tried the Spanish ratatouille before but it tasted as it looked (soft vegetables cooked in olive oil).  Overall it was a solid meal and the ambiance was nice as well.  Would definitely come back and try other menu items with a group! read more

Easily would come here again! I came on a Saturday night and had a great time. The staff was super polite and helpful in recommending food. We tried and loved: the fried goat cheese (queso de cabra con miel), steak with onion crostini (hangar a la plancha), and the braised beef cheeks with mashed potatoes (carrilleras de ternera). A really solid Spanish restaurant in Astoria. The interior is so beautiful. It's bright, spacious and a little rustic with the exposed wood accents. What I really appreciate about Sala is all the specials they have on a daily basis -- their daily happy hour deals literally calls my name! I've also been there on Thursdays for their paella deals and Wednesday for their wine/sangria deal. I even saw that they have free flamenco shows on certain days! After spending a week in Spain, I had the sickest craving for Spanish food, and I gotta say that the food from Sala is just as good as what I had in Spain. The paella is a must get, and I would say that it's even better some of the ones I had in Spain. It's so flavorful and the rice is nice and soft. The octopus and empanadas were also really great. We came across this place for a late lunch. We had dinner plans in a few hours so we didn't want a huge lunch. I missed the tapas I had in Spain and was craving tapas. Luckily this place came up on Yelp and was highly rated so we walked over. We were greeted warmly and sat down. The restaurant was decorated beautifully :) We got some bread and oil for the table after we ordered. I got the rose sangria which was refreshing on a hot day. My friend got the dates wrapped in bacon which she really liked. I ordered the Calamari, the octopus and the croquettes. The croquettes came out first. They were crunchy on the outside and creamy on the inside. So much flavor! It was so good. I then had calamari. The breading was the right texture and seasoned beautifully. I really enjoyed the dipping sauce the calamari came with as well. The octopus was the real star! Grilled to perfection. Tender and fresh and seasoned very well. Wow I would love to dine here again and get a meal like paella. Best tapas I've had outside of Spain :) I also saw there would be flamingo dancing too some nights. How fun! LOVE THIS PLACE! The vibe, food, drinks, EVERYTHING! I have been here numerous times as I live around the neighborhood and each time I come I try to order something new and every single thing on their menu is divine. The consistency of the flavor and quality of the dishes is impeccable. Well worth the money. I highly recommend the Valencia Paella (seafood paella). On Thursday nights they have special pricing on this dish. The patatas bravas are amazing as well and definitely a must. For drinks, I highly recommend the "Ibiza pool" if you like tequila. It used to be on the actual menu but it no longer is---however the bartenders are familiar with it and still make it for me every time I request it. It is so yummy! The service is always top tier. We are typically seated fairly quickly although Friday and Saturday nights, and most evenings when they have happy hour, it can get very very busy. Sala also has a live band and shows certain nights. Makes for such a great vibe. This place gives me a little bit of Spain in Astoria and I love it. This place is well worth a visit if you're in Queens/Astoria. read more

Came here for early dinner on a Saturday afternoon - before the night rush. Ambiance-wise, this Spanish tapas spot delivers, cozy, with warm lighting, good music selection, and a well-thought-out layout that invites you to settle in for a long meal. Service was friendly and welcoming, but unfortunately, timing was way off. Dishes came out painfully slow and completely out of order, which made it hard to enjoy the meal as intended. As for the food: disappointing overall, with one major exception. The croquettes were the first red flag, when they finally arrived; more like soft, fried balls of béchamel than anything resembling a proper Spanish croquette. If you are going to serve them that way, just call them what they are. Other tapas followed the same pattern, small portions, high prices, and little to remember them by. Then came the roasted chicken. Finally, a dish that showed heart and skill, rustic, soulful, and deeply flavorful. It felt like someone's Spanish abuela had stepped into the kitchen. It saved the night and proved that the chef can cook, when they choose to. Would I go back? Maybe, but not for the tapas. I would return for that chicken and hope the kitchen's timing has improved. read more

A group of us came in on Tuesday night for their Queens event and had such a great time! Really good drinks and food - we loved the gaspacho, croquetas, gambas al ajillo, hanger a la plancha, setas con brie and tequila drinks. The tapas are meant for 2 people so if you have a larger group, definitely order a bit more but everything is fresh and hot outta the kitchen. I did find the hanger a la plancha just a little bit salty but that's just me. Everything else ewas great! Marganzilla is the go to if you love tequila - it's not too strong nor sweet and just has the perfect blend of everything. I think we must have gotten at least 6 of those! Great food, great ambience, impeccable service! This is a great date spot! Food: I'd you are craving tapas, this is an amazing spot to get some. We ordered the croquetas, queso de cabra de miel, pulpo a la plancha, and tortilla espanola. My favorites were the (1) croquetas, which were incredibly creamy (2) the queso de cabra de miel, which had the perfect texture and the honey added so much flavor. The octopus was really well made and the fish came with potatoes (which is why we skipped on the patatas bravas). The tortilla espanola was very fluffy and good. There was no part of this meal that I was disappointed with except for not being able to try more dishes. 4 dishes was more than enough for two people! Ambience: the restaurant is located underneath the train tracks. So you wouldn't assume, the large inviting atmosphere, Sala gives off. We arrived at 6 pm on a Sunday night and it was pretty empty but within 1 hour it started to fill up. They have a large open space with two bars! It had a very upscale vibe! Service: amazing service! We love going to Sala the food is always great and we love the tapas style dinning because you get to have a little bit of everything I think it's a great new edition to Astoria. We live over on Ditmars a bit of a trek but we'll worth it . I had two huge bars and a lounge area I must say this place fills up fast which makes for a great ambiance it makes you feel like your in Manhattan. Our Favorite is of course the classic pan tumaca with the lomo iberico bellota ! Fantastic I could eat it daily we usually always order more then one order because it is so good . We have also tried the papatas bravos ,gambas, and the hanger steak served on bread all were delicious. If I'm being honest we also tried the meatballs we were not a fan, kinda disappointed in them but all else was amazing read more
