They make good fresh eats everyday. It's a regular urban stores with a food counter with various options to order. Their grilled chicken and lamb plates are nicely portioned and always hot.

DO NOT SLEEP on this halal market and deli in West Oakland. It has the rating it has for a reason! Also, it's super close to the West Oakland BART station if you ever need to be there. I was actually stopping by to stop by a Goth market event at a local brewery (to review shortly)... The market has all of the things you would expect. Nothing off there. The real (!!!) kicker is the counter-serve deli they have. The food is quite frankly some of the best Middle Eastern food I have EVER had - and at an extremely affordable price. You order at the counter and it takes a bit because they are actually making your dish fresh! I ordered two dishes. First, I had to order the lamb platter - the store is Yemeni and lamb mandi is unique Yemeni specialty. It's basically lamb, rice, spices, veggies, yogurt and all the other stuff you'd expect. The meal was absolutely delicious and massive. There were two giant pieces of lamb - that basically slid right off the bone. An absolutely amazing dish. I also come from a very lamb-meat-centric culture and I was absolutely shocked at how soft this lamb was - I've actually never experienced anything like it!!! Second, I ordered the veggie platter because it was cheap and wanted to take something home. It was pretty good - hummus, baba ghanouj, pita, falafel, rice - also all the things you would expect. Also a great, solid meal. They also give out complimentary Yemeni tea. I think it's sugared up green tea. A bit too sweet for me, but a nice touch if you're into that. There's a few places outside to sit. Though it was actually raining the day I went, so I had to eat in my car. So I guess the enjoyableness of your dining experience is a bit dependent on weather. Anyways, the food is cheap, generally very good, and the lamb mandi plate is absolutely one of the best things I have ever eaten in that part of the Bay. Highly recommended if you want a tasty, cheap, filling meal (especially if you need to fill lots of people) - to show up and grab a plate!

    Chicken Shawarma Plate Vs Wrap
    Razaa A.

This place has all halal items on their menu which is great for those with dietary restrictions. They have street parking right outside of the business and you can call in your order ahead of time for convenience. The items are fairly priced and the service was quick and professional. I ordered the chicken shawarma plate and also a chicken shawarma wrap. Both were really tasty but I would take the wrap over the plate. They don't use pita for the wrap and it's more panini style, which I really enjoy. The plate is still a solid option. I didn't realize this place was so close by and had solid food so I'm looking forward to trying this again soon!

Just found my new favorite local togo shawarma spot. This spicy shawarma was straight smackin. Hood eats are good eats!

(Left) Chicken shawarma plate w/ rice & hummus (Right) chicken mandi from Too Good To Go app
    irma d.

I had 2 orders from the Too Good To Go app. They were both 2 pcs. of chicken mandi w/ rice. I also ordered a chicken shawarma plate. - Rice - it was very flavorful. I can taste a good amount of saffron. It was also fluffy & not dried out. - Chicken Mandi - it was fall off the bones tender & moist. The spices they were marinated in surely permeated in the meat. It must have been soaked overnight. - Chicken Shawarma - has a lot more savory spices than what I've had in other restaurants. If you're not a spicy eater, watch out for the very thinly sliced spicy green peppers . I initially thought they were bell peppers because it had some until I bit into a small piece. It tasted good to me bec I like a bit of spiciness. - Hummus - it was great I definitely will be going back to try baba ghannouj, lamb aqdah, lamb chop plate, kofta kabab & meat samosa. I enjoyed what I just got so I'm very encouraged to try their other food.

This is for Too Good To Go review only. The area is very busy and minimal parking. You go to the counter and show it is for TGTG pick up. The counter will write the order on a piece of paper for the actual pick up. The portion is pretty big for the portion with a whole quarter chicken leg, rice, some lettuce and sauce. The store is packed wall to wall of products as well.

    Just wow.

The best lunch I've had in a long time. Lamb & Chicken combo. The lamb was fresh & fell right off the bone, cooked to perfection. The chicken was crispy on the outside & juicy on the inside, also fell apart! Rice has raisins & spices, huge fan. The chef behind the counter was funny & humble, I can tell he has baraqah in his hands mashAllah! Highly recommend this spot if you're in the area!

Awhile back, I tried to bring as much business to Star Meat as I could because 1. it's a small business and 2. it's inside Star Grocery (which I LOVE, so it's convenient). When I would go there, there would often be 2 or 3 people behind the counter and oftentimes I would be the only customer. I felt like I had to stand there forever before anyone even acknowledged I existed. Each person would be busy doing something, but there was no "I'll be with you in 2 minutes." Finally, I went one day and there were 3 workers behind the counter chatting with each other. I was the only customer and was standing around 6 feet away from them, looking right at them. They went on with there conversation (not doing any other work) for a full 5 minutes. Finally I thought, "OK, they really don't seem to want my business, so I can go to any one of 4 other places and get what I want." That was a year or two ago. So, today I thought, why not give it another try, it's certainly convenient. Again, I'm the only customer at the counter. One guy is washing equipment and two guys are making sandwiches. I know that they know that I'm there, there are mirrors all along the back wall exactly for the purpose of seeing the customers. After around 4 minutes I think, who knows how long I'm going to be standing here. Maybe they have to make 20 sandwiches and I'll be here for a half hour. So, I left. I don't have anything like this experience at the 4 other meat counters I go to in the area. I'm totally fine waiting if I have some sense that I'm waiting for a purpose and that the worker will get to me as soon as they can. But at Star Meat, it feels like I'm more of an inconvenience than a customer. "Hi, I'll be with you as soon as I can," goes a long way.

Hey I like some veggies and fruit and shrooms also but most of my diet is meat and seafood, as mama God intended it to be. It is awesome to have such a nice family owned butcher shop in town that is all about quality. In the freezer section are meaty oxtails, lamb and beef neck bones and sometimes knuckle bones. In the meat counter they have cut up leg bones. My number one place for bones. Store bought bone broth pales in compareson to my recipe and even though a takes a hot minute to make, it's worth it. The staff is great and very knowledgeable.

And after gazing at their product listing one day, I can kinda tell that they probably service a lot of ethnic shops like taquerias and small brick n mortars. You actually don't see or interact with any of their products directly. Upon opening their public door, there's a small office with a window. There's a current product sheet there with current pricing. You have to go by this and not with what you got in the past, or internet postings, as this sheet will be their current inventory and pricing. And pricing these days can vary greatly from week to week as well as supply. There's also a hanging bulletin board that has a lot of weekly specials. Once you've found something, you just place the order with the nice receptionist. She'll draw up a receipt and take your payment. CASH ONLY (for some reason). You then have to go outside where your car is and wait for a warehouse employee to bring it out to you. They are quick, like I've never had to wait more than 3 minutes. I've tried this place like 3 times now since I work nearby and just hit this up on my way home. Here are some finds: *In a very industrial zone of San Leandro. Close to the Costco but much deeper in industrial streets. Can't see it from a main road. Gotta go under an overpass then parallel a railroad track. Now that I know where it is at, it's a breeze. But first time looking it was a bit of a challenge. *All meats I've gotten thus far are frozen solid. But nicely frozen where you won't have to break anything separating things. Lots of things are well sealed in tight cryovac. So will have to spend time defrosting goods, can't go home and start cooking. But I just put whatever I'm planning on cooking in the fridge for a good day and just cook it the next day or so. And in what meats I've gotten even though frozen at one point is still of really good quality once defrosted. *Beef seems somewhat 'Choice grade' but I haven't seen any labeling to say so. Steaks I've tried are meatier and chewier than most grocery stores in my area, but in a good way. Feels more natural and not as 'water-y'. I've only tried 1 lb Rib Eye Steaks and thin cut NY strips so far, and have been more than pleased. Also tried some lamb shoulder chops and they too made for good dishes. *Pricing less than retail grocery stores unless there is mass grocery sale. Competive with Costco beef pricing but here you'll have to defrost something slowly. But you won't have to go through the Costco grind of getting aggravated in the parking lot, weaving through hundreds of people and waiting in life-sucking lines. I mean I'll still go to Costco, but if I can go to Costco less, then I've just freed up a big part of my personal time. *If I'm ever gonna feed a big group, big bbq, holiday party, big potluck etc., this will be a legit option. You can get cases of stuff here, whole ribeyes and briskets, cases of chicken/pork/lamb. They even have bacon, sausage and common cheeses on wholesale. And a big draw here is they have a ton of ethnic meats, which is why I'm sure they deal with a lot ethnic mom n pops. Tripe, suadero, beef cheeks, pork necks, livers all here. Probably won't find that stuff at Costco. *Warehouse hours, open like super early like 6-7 am and close by noon. Works for my hours but not for many others. Good fit for me, so they'll become a resource for me.

For the leg of lamb, I think most people get a whole leg of lamb. That was way too much for me and I think the butcher thought I was confused when I asked for less and asked me what I was doing with it. He ended up saying he could give me a half leg of lamb and I agreed. Thar was about 3 and a half pounds (bone included) which was the perfect amount. I seared it and then braised it and the meat fell off the bone. Delicious and the price was pretty good. I was cooking my first pork chop and decided to come here to get it. Their pork isn't labeled as Berkshire or Duroc or anything but that probably keeps the price down. For chops, they had boneless, bone in, and double cut (which was also bone in). I mentioned I wanted it to be about 2 inches thick and the butcher said to get the double cut.I got 2 beautiful thick pork chops for $6.99 a pound so about $18 total. The regular cut bone in pork chops were the same price though obviously smaller. I brined this overnight and reverse seared it and it was great. The chop was a loin chop- loin and then a tenderloin nugget- not a pure rib chop. Cooked really nicely and was tender which I think was partially the overnight brine and also their pork. They do sell some vegetables and grocery supplies if you want to just make a single stop. They also have a deli with some sandwiches that looked good and prepared foods. You can also get other meat like rabbit, goat and such here. I'd visited the chain grocery and couldn't find fresh Turkey legs. What they had in their freezer case looked so unappetizing and were breasts or thighs and even the grocery butcher said to try the local meat market. So I called up Waylands to see if they had and they could get in with in a weeks time.
