Dr. Cavender is wonderful. The staff is rude except for Kelly. It said that the doctors don't insist that their staff is helpful empathetic and kind. When our pets are sick we are very upset but they don't seem to care. I've known Dr cavender for years she is excellent she should be more aware of how her staff makes people feel. read more

Dr Dobson is absolutely amazing!!!! This man is the most compassionate, caring and loving human I know. The front desk however, disrespectful and unacceptable. During an extremely emotional time, I was treated with a lack of compassion, empathy, and basic courtesy. The overall tone felt dismissive and rushed. No one expects perfection, but respect and kindness should be the bare minimum--especially when families are saying goodbye to a beloved pet. On Monday, September 15th, my in-law's dog, Junior, was brought in very sick. He left with a possible positive for Leptospirosis. Dr. Cavender, the main veterinarian, was helpful and accommodating at first during the initial diagnosis. Came in late into the night to get samples for a test and see him. By Tuesday night, his lab results confirmed kidney damage and probable liver failure. He was in obvious pain. Crying and groaning. His test results were reviewed by a family member who is a nurse. She stated that a human patient with those levels would be on IV drips of antibiotics and pain relief. On Wednesday morning, when we asked for pain medication, I was sent home only with more fluids and another antibiotic. Junior continued to suffer, screaming in pain, and we had to call again to specifically request something to ease his pain. At that point, we were still uncertain about his future and holding on to hope. Despite our efforts, my in-laws ultimately made the heartbreaking decision to end his suffering, and I took him in to be put to sleep. That morning had already been filled with tears, unbearable pain, and multiple trips to the clinic. By the time I carried Junior to the door of the Salem Veterinary Clinic, I was emotionally exhausted. I was denied entry at the door without any explanation and told to take him back to the car. There, in the trunk, Dr. Cavender and her assistant, Nicole, approached from the back of the clinic with no greeting, no acknowledgment. They shaved his foot in silence. The doctor briefly left to retrieve a bag, again without a word. As Junior took his last breaths, I sobbed, reaching out past them to touch him one last time. Still, no one spoke to explain what was happening, to offer comfort, or even basic compassion. When it was over, the only words I heard were from Dr. Cavender: "It's a shame." And then they left me there, broken and alone. I was stunned by the lack of empathy. At one of the most traumatic and vulnerable moments of my life, the care and humanity I expected from the staff were completely absent. A construction worker across the street, not the clinic staff, was the one who came to console me. Dr. Cavender is undoubtedly a skilled veterinarian, but her compassion toward grieving families was nonexistent in my experience. The coldness I encountered has left me with deep bitterness toward this clinic. What was already a tragedy was made far more devastating by the way we were treated. I did not deserve this. Junior did not deserve this. Rest in peace to our beautiful boy. AND SHAME ON YOU Dr. Cavender. You are a shame. read more

We had very positive experience with Dr. Cavender and Salem Veterinary Services. Our cat was a new patient to them and they were able to get us in to the clinic for an emergency appointment on the same day we observed a serious issue with our very senior cat of 21 years. Dr. Cavender and Kelly and other staff were very knowledgeable, skilled, competent, kind and helpful, with Kelly going above and beyond to help care for our cat. It is with great sadness that we made the decision after a week that our cat would be best served by putting her to sleep. Throughout the entire process, Dr. Cavender and her staff were thoughtful and caring. It was very touching that they sent us a very thoughtful condolences card for the loss of our kitty. Dr. C yelled at my dad when he asked if she needed help bringing my dog (who passed at home) inside. She proceeded to drag his body inside and his head kept hitting the door. She then slammed the door in my family's face without saying a thing. Didn't even realize that would be the last time I would see my dog. And my last memory of him was disturbing and traumatizing. There should be an option for ZERO stars!!!!!!!!!AVOID Dr. Ann Cavender at Salem Veterinary Services. She is not fit to be in practice and she cannot be trusted to care for your pets. She's been in practice for far too long to think that this is appropriate and I'm completely disgusted and heartbroken. I have been going to her practice for 25 plus years and this past weekend she abused my dog right in front of me and my mom. Please please please share to help others avoid this treatment. From reading reviews there are at least four others who have experienced this abusive behavior. I am completely sickened, saddened and disgusted by the lack of care and ethics of a medical professional that I came into contact with today. My dogs are my children and to find the right care for them is extremely important. To learn that a veterinary business suddenly changes their ethics and feels that they can manhandle your 6 pound dog is abuse in my eyes. My baby Coal, who is 15 weeks old, was at the vets today for his shots. I didn't not ask for an ear cleaning but got one anyways. She proceeded to pluck his ear hair, he's a mini poodle. Again, didn't ask if it was okay, just did it. This is only the second time he's had his ear hair pulled. No ear hair powder was used either. She got upset with him. She very aggressive pulled the the hair on the back of his head and neck and he instantly started squawking. It didn't stop there. She then placed her hands around his neck! He continued to squawk and I swear she squeezed him around the neck. The assistant did nothing to stop the vet. I so badly wanted to reach over and remove her hands from my baby but didn't want to be accused of harming the vet. I am so floored with this and how my dog and I were treated. I will definitely be reporting this clinic and this vet. I've also learned that I am not the only one who has experienced something like this. I had a long standing wellness appointment for my golden retriever in December. I arrived at 8:00 am. Nicole the VERY RUDE receptionist said that I didn't have an appointment and I can wait 3 hours to be seen! I asked for another appointment and if she would write out the appointment card for me. ( So that I would have a record of the appointment, in case it happens again to me). She scribbled on the appointment card, so that you could not read it at all. !!! I wish there could be 0 stars. This is not about dog care. When our family's pet past away we brought our dog to This vet hoping he would be treated with care and respect. Instead we dropped his body off in the back and they claimed they would take care of him. We couldn't as a family drive away watching our lifeless dog laying outside alone. So we asked if they could at least bring him inside. They felt inconvenienced, had no compassion but agreed. Some 80 year old ugly grandma comes out and try's to move our lifeless dog inside who's about 100 pounds and was struggling moving his body. Me and my dad asked if we could help move the body seeing how she's struggling, actually kind of disrespecting the body of the dog. After we offered to help this old hag snapped at us and got upset for some reason that our minds couldn't fathom, and said no she can do it herself. I s**t you not we watched for 3 minutes as she struggled to move his body inside, mutilating it as we're watching and as she finally got it In the door, (He's not all the way in) she tried to shut the door with his head still in the way, realizing she uses her foot to move his head out the way, and shut the door. No condolences, no apologies and she left my family especially my sister crying as we left, thinking his body will not get the right care, and driving away we were thinking of going back to retrieve the body from this place. This has nothing to do with the quality of care this place may provide, they are good vets who don't have any heart for the people who bring there pets in. read more

Everyone here is beyond rude- no matter how long you've been a patient for. 15 years ago this place was a hidden gem with very reasonable prices, but that's not the case anymore. Seems like both of the main vets have lost their love for the job, as even they have become pretty awful. I've had 5 different family members & friends also leave this place, for similar reasons. They just don't care about your pet- speak down to you, treat your "furbabys" like livestock, add on random prices/fees etc. it's truly a shame. Oh, and the waiting room is a disaster. I have never understood why the doctors allow it but it's been this way for years. Dawn was there for 20 years...and was never polite or accommodating, literally none of the staff is polite on any level EVER... in the 6 years I've been going there. They don't even make eye contact while they spit out some dismissive remark...all of which makes it highly unlikely that they treat the animals with kindness when the owners aren't there... The prices are very reasonable and Dr Yates is amazing... otherwise I would have never kept going there. If you can afford it there's other competent veterinarians in the area. Ultra rude staff, I was actually baffled by the way they spoke to me. I was on the phone trying to tell them about my dog being sick and they cut me off mid sentence to correct me. I wished the woman a good day and she hung up the phone without saying anything. Just shocking etiquette and lack of empathy. THE MOST INSANE PART THOUGH is that my dog was actually abused right in front of my face. The doctor needed to look at my dogs eyes and he's a sissy so he would turn his head away. Her response is and I quote "fine. If you're going to act like a jerk, we're going to treat you like a jerk." So she had the other nurse grab a leash to muzzle him with and I'm thinking okay just get him to hold his head still. NOPE she put the leash around his neck and nose then pulled as tight as she could. My mouth dropped. I tried to stick my fingers between his neck and the leash and barely got through, I told her that's too tight he can't breathe and she said "of course he can breathe" as he's literally gargling for air. It was absolutely horrifying and made me want to cry. You couldn't have tried standing over him and holding his head? I could've gotten it done, my dog is a sweet and well behaved boy. Why is your first instinct to punish him for being scared? We will never be returning, my dog will be seen by compassionate and caring people. This experience was disgusting. read more

I have visited this vet on multiple occasions with a few of my pets (7 cats and a dog) #farmlife. I'm there for the treatment of my animals first and foremost! But there is a certain amount of compassion expected when taking your pet in for a visit, however knowledgable Dr Cavendar may be does not excuse the lack of common courtesy that is displayed and her blatant disregard to Nicole's behavior towards the customer is absolutely unacceptable!! I understand Dr C has taken Nicole in and has treated her like family (yeah I have inside insight) she should be aware how Nicole is not only taking advantage of this but running her business into the ground! Wake up Dr C before you no longer have what you've worked so hard for. Nicole expects everyone she comes in contact with to know how the vet office is run and what they need or how they expect to receive information they want with telling you how to do so. The rest of you, may be like me and over look the rudeness (for a limited time) bc you need your pet seen in a pinch but trust me it's not worth it and there are plenty of other places that will get you in and actually treat you like a human with real feeling, I hate to think how the pets are treated when out of their owners site makes me absolutely sick to my stomach and I would NEVER trust them with over night care or even to take my animal out of my site!!! I cannot stress this enough, DO NOT GO HERE!! This place is a butcher shop.. Sure, It might be cheaper than everywhere else, but so not worth it. You get what you pay for. I've had cats for all of my 37 years and NEVER have I had a worse experience with a vet office. I took my two kitties to get neutered today and what a nightmare. First off, my boyfriend and I offered to carry the crate to the back room for the receptionist bc she was an older lady and the crate was quite heavy. Big mistake, the place is FILTHY! Not a sterile environment, at all. Food everywhere, dirty dishes mixed with operating tools, it was disgusting. I should have taken my cats & ran for the hills at that point, like I wanted too, but I didn't. :( They then call me about 45min later to say that my cats are done & ready to be picked up. I had ran a few errands, so it took me about 30min to get back. I walk in & the crate is just sitting in the middle of the waiting area with a room full of patients (all with dogs) I mean come the F*ck on.. my cats just went through surgery, like they need to have the shit scared out of them the second they open their eyes. So weird.. And now for the fun part... As I'm paying I ask the woman a few post op. general questions "whats the recovery for the kitties" "will they need to be in cones" etc.. She was so fucking rude, full on dismissed me and said, word for word "They're recovered" that was her answer to every question i asked "They're recovered" Wouldn't even look up from the file she was holding. I get the cats home, after our 45min drive and within 15 minutes one of their sutures opened and part of his scrotum was spilling out of the incision. needless to say, I had to put him back into the crate and take him back to the vet. At this point, I'm pissed but more so worried about my little dude. I get back to the vet, they again could not be MORE RUDE, to where at one point one of the vet tech's called me a bitch because I was asking if I could speak with the Dr before he goes back into surgery. This place really is such a joke. Never in my life have I experienced such terrible service. What makes it so much worse is that they are dealing with peoples pets who are more like our children than pets. It makes me super sad for them, especially Nicole (with an N) Wolf, the one who called me a Bitch for no reason, at all. How professional. She didn't seem to have any compassion towards animals at all & just has a horrible attitude. If you've made it this far, sorry for the long review. This is my 1st review, EVER, for anything.. Thats how downright awful this place is. I can't stress enough, don't go here. It's not worth saving the 50 bucks. You'll regret it and your pets will be worse off for it. I have been going to Dr. Cavender for 8 years. I like her straight forward old school approach with my pet, but her receptionist is beyond rude. And looking at these reviews, it looks like I am not the only one who feels this way. When I called to schedule an appointment, she acts like you are bothering her and is snide at every question you ask, like: do you have evening hours? When I had to call back to change my appointment time, she acted very annoyed and passive aggressive and then kept me waiting on hold for 17 minutes-- there is not a doubt in my mind she did this on purpose. When I called back she put me on hold for another 5 minutes. She has been rude several times, so I know it wasn't just a bad day. This woman needs to get a job where she doesn't deal with the public. This place is dirty, and I had the worst customer service experience of my life going here because of the receptionist Nicole. I've never met someone so miserable and rude in my entire life. I've never took my dog for services so I can't speak on the vet services. What I can speak on is the absolutely wretched, rude troll of a receptionist they have answering their phones. I moved last year to the area and was looking for a new vet. I called 3 months ago and they told me to try back in August because they weren't taking new patients. So today I noticed my dog had an ear infection so I figured I'd call there to see if they were finally taking new patients. Here's my phone call: She answered the phone and I said " hello i was told to call in august to check to see if you guys are taking new patients yet?" And she goes very rudely " what do you mean??" I said " well when I called a few months back you guys weren't taking new patients yet and was told to call back in August. " And she just says "correct". And i said "sooo you're not taking new patients yet?", and she goes "correct" And i said " ok thank you " and she said nothing and hung up on me. I was so floored that i decided to call back and ask for a supervisor ( yes I pulled a Karen but it was warranted). So she asks me why I want to talk to a manager and I said to make a complaint with how rude you were. She snickered and said okay. Then put me on hold for a while. Someone else came on and was just as rude. I told her the story and she was silent. I said "hello???" And She just said "well we aren't taking patients until November " and I said "well why didn't she just say that ? There was no need for her to be so nasty to me for no reason". And she goes "ma'am what are you looking to do?" And I said "I cannot believe you're not apologizing for her behavior. You think it's ok for her to talk to people like that ?" And all she said: "Ma'am do you want to wait until November for an appointment or you can just call another clinic" . I was completely floored. I just ended up hanging on her after that. I would NEVER go there and hope nobody else has to deal with these sick people. But by the looks of the recent reviews, I'm not the only one who had a problem. read more
