I had my backyard completely redone with this company in 2020. I had a patio awning installed. They had it permitted through the city and inspected. It passed. Just two years later we started noticing that the window directly under the awning was leaking during severe weather. (So once or twice a winter) it has been a nightmare ever since. I called Salens to have them come inspect. They did not come out. They gave me the number of the company who did the awning. My husband and I both reached out to them to NO RESPONSE. At that point I felt like I wasn't going to get help from Salens or this other company. I reached out to several awing companies and explained the issues I was having, to see if they would come inspect the work. To no surprise very few people felt comfortable inspecting work that wasn't theirs. I found someone who did come out, pulled back flashing, recaulked, and sealed some cracks around the area. This helped initially but the leaking came back. I had a leak detection company come out and they couldn't replicate the leak. At this point my option is to pull the awning down and throw 6,000 down the drain or cut a whole inside my home in the drywall to see where it's leaking. Pulling the awning down will require me to completely resucco the backside of my home. Theres no visible damage from the leaking. Our Insurance company couldn't find the source and declared it wasn't from a storm. I called Salens back because I really wanted to speak to the owner about this and I left a message with another staff member. It's been two weeks with no call back. All of this to say I would vet the subcontractors this company uses. I also would not recommend drilling into stucco ! read more

If this company would have made any design recommendations, my fence would have never rotted, nor would i have been suckered into spending an extra $5000 from something that later had to be removed and now have to look at something the wife gives me grief over by wanting to move. Its better to pay the extra money for a general contractor or civil engineer with some design creativity. The concrete is solid however. read more

Someone from Salens insists on parking either across or in the red zone of this crosswalk in front of an elementary school multiple times a week. Thus, the little elementary school students have to walk out into oncoming traffic before the cars can see them and (hopefully) stop. Douche move, Salens. Well, I had this company out to take a look at my property and discuss my project and never heard back from them. After checking in about a week later I was told there was a family emergency and he was working on the quote. Now it's another week or two after that and I never heard back from them so I guess they ghosted me. Maybe because my project was not enough money? I think $7,000 is a lot of money. See my original review for his bait and switch pricing and poor communication. His reply to me pretends it was just a miscommunication, which it was not. He wrote different numbers on the contract than we had agreed to verbally and I didn't catch it until it was too late. Shame on me for falling for it but still not cool. He then up-charged me to get back to what we'd originally agreed to. This updated review is for the results of the drainage system they put in our backyard. As you can see from the photo it was a complete waste of money. They did not place drains in the low parts of the yard where flooding occurs. If they had trouble finding them they could have asked me and I would have shown them. Instead, they put a few drains randomly in the yard and placed the drains above the level of the grass so nothing actually drains into them. Anyone who passed fifth grade and learned about gravity could have predicted that this would not work. They also did not take the drainage all the way to the street, but only to our side yard. The net result was that I spent money for a company to dig up part of my lawn but provide no benefit. The concrete patio was ok but with their poor quality, poor communication, and unethical pricing I would not hire them again nor recommend them to anyone. read more

Sal is not respinsible. They did not rebar and put in proper air condition drain drip hole so after a few months, we have multiple cracks, rising concrete about 5cm, and discolored concrete surface. the rising concrete can cause trip and falll safety hazard. I called and sent over pictures and Sal the owner would not even want to come and see what he can do to repair. Originally he gurantee the concrete for 10 years before I pay, now it has only been 14 months. Don't trust this company!! The reply from Sal is just to cover up his lies. There were pros and cons to this company. After mulling it over, and waiting for about two months to see how the job turned out in my backyard, I ultimately decided on a 2 star rating. I have stamped concrete dividing my backyard into 2 separate areas, both roughly 12'×13'. One side I requested 3/4" river rock to be filled in after the area was weeded, graded, and weed block layed down. The second area was to have sod layed down. To the rear of this area, were planter boxes with over grown weeds, all of which I requested to be removed. Pro: From the beginning Salen was easy to communicate with as he was prompt to reply to any of my text/phone calls. His son, Aaron, also seemed professional and polite. Pro: The bid Salen provided was per exactly what I requested, unlike other landscapers trying to upsell.... And the bid was the cheapest. Con: Ultimately my disappointment stems from the 2 man workcrew that actually did the labor on my backyard. There was a much older man, and another man whom appeared to be in his late 40's. The man in his 40's was rude to me on 2 occasions. First occurrence came about when he asked if I was okay with the rounded shape of the bender board on the side of my yard with sod. I explained I wanted it to be "square" so that it would match the square corner opposite the yard with rock. He said he was fine changing it to be square. After he changed the shape, it wasn't square to match the other side of the yard, and I told him again I wanted a square corner and pointed out again the bender board. He then went on a rant, saying "I know what I'm doing" and that he does this every day.... Con: According to my contract, the area where I wanted sod to be installed, needed to be prepped. The contract outlined the removal of the topsoil and new topsoil to be added so that all of the weeds could be minimized. However, we noticed the area prepped for sod had foxtail seeds everywhere! Pictures included. After the planter boxes with overgrown foxtails and other weeds to the rear fence were removed, a mound of dirt full of weeds remained. If this dirt was left where it was, it would have been fine, however, this weed-ridden soil was used to level out the prepped sod area. Great... now my new lawn was going to be full of weeds. Make sense? I don't think so! I told Salen about this. He had the 2 man crew plus a third guy to shovel off the weedy top dirt and replace it with actual new soil they trucked in. Although the company made an attempt to correct the problem, the damage was already done. The foxtail seeds had been mixed in. Just a few days after the sod had been layed foxtail weeds began to sprout up. Major disappointment. Con: after the sod had been installed, and the crew left, we checked each sprinkler head. Surprised, that one sprinkler head was completely covered. Sure, not a big deal, I could have ripped away the sod myself to expose the sprinkler head, but the installer should have checked this. I told salen and he got his guy to come back. Con: Major attitude occurrence number 2. I meet the 40 year old at my side gate. As soon as I open it, in a rude and loud tone he says "WHAT IS IT?!" My husband stood near the opposite side of the backyard and heard the man's tone. As the man enters and then sees my husband his attitude changed.... major attitude. I don't know, but something is up. The man cleared the sod away from the sprinkler head and after that I thought all was good. Con: I noticed several gaps in the sod. I asked Salen to come out to inspect the work. Salen did and assured me the lawn was perfect. Fast-forward a month and there is an obvious seam smack down the middle. Had the sod been staggered, a large gap running the length of the lawn would not be apparent. Also, with gaps come a bumpy lawn... Con: The rock side. So I wouldn't even say 50% is 3/4 inch rock. A lot of river rock pebbles mixed in. Seemed like a way for them to cut cost.... Con: Wow, surprised weeds sprouted up along the edge of the rocks close to the concrete in a matter of 3 days. After investigating why, apparently there was a 4" gap in the weed block from the concrete. Sloppy job. Or cheap job? Cutting back on weed block. I dunno. Salen has been in business for a long time. I'm sure he's had a lot of successful job sites under his belt. Unfortunately this is not one. Like I said earlier Salen himself did not do the work, but his name is on the work trucks. We do have intentions of getting the front yard landscaped with a rock bed and low water usage plants. I'm guessing we'll be looking for a different landscaper. read more

Salen please stop telling lies. The general public has been fooled by you for 35 years but not AAA investigators or The state of CA. The Contractors board did not rule against me. You refused to pay your bill for damages and they said take you to court. LETTER attached and they gave me instructions how to sue you in small claims. They said due to new Corona Virus rules your damages were not a large enough dollar amount so I have to pay the attorney fees. Below is the check for $9,775.48 paid by my insurance AAA for some of the damage you did to our house. Guess who they are going to go after the money from? Below is a copy of the repairs I paid for so far that you caused from reckless driving of a Bobcat tractor by your employees and sloppy work with improper tools. The same employees that threw chicken bones in my neighbors yard. The same employees that drove all over my neighbors driveway and yard. Below is a copy of the letter I received from AAA after they did a full 3 month long investigation on your company and the damage you caused on 6/3/2020 to our dwelling and fence. AAA doesn't pay invalid claims. The evidence against you is overwhelming. Yes my lemon law attorney sued Thor Industries for a RV that was driven 500 miles to get repairs 7 times so they bought it. My attorney got most of the money as they always do. You sure got me there! The previous contractor was arrested with multiple charges so the state also did a thorough investigation before Salen started work. These damages were all new caused by Salen. Prior to Salens arrival we had some cracked concrete poured out of code in a few spots so we contracted Salen to demo and redo. He said no problem he has 35 years experience. Prior to Salen we had a brand new house, fences, stucco, sewer line, garage door, gutters, and front and side yard landscaping. Salen damaged all of these areas! read more

Just had my driveway redone. The scope was to break-up, remove and haul away the old cement (Wednesday). Then form in the new layout, add gravel, #4 rebar 18"oc (Thursday), pour 4", 6 sack cement, about 850sf (Friday) and remove forms, complete clean-up (Monday). I'm very pleased with the finish product, thus far. I went with a basic brushed finish, because I find it has more use benefits. Attitude (Patience & Professionalism) - 5 Attention to Detail - 5 Communication - 5 Materials - 5 Clean-up - 5 Cost - 5 Timing - 4 What impressed me most, was the gentlemen, Juan, who did the layout, pour and finishing work. He was very thorough, personable and knowledgeable. He measured from all angles, lined off the measurements and double-checked them. I really appreciated him taking the time to get it right, rather than rushing through it. He was excellent at his trade. I was equally impressed by the owner, and son, who were very attentive and courteous. Let's face it, any type of remodeling comes with a level of stress for the home owner, and the last thing we need to deal with is an impatient, mightier than thou contractor. We had our backyard landscaped by Salens. The quote was awesome. Very fast, detailed estimate, and no pressure sales feels. We received a quote for the same amount by someone else but didn't feel right, so money wasn't a factor in choosing them. Work took about three weeks total. The concrete was done super fast. The landscaping did take a little longer. Everyone we met was very nice. My husband did need to discuss some issues with aesthetics with them. At the end it was those issues that made him feel like he needed to check the work every night. But it is still good work. None of our plants have died or none of our grass had dried patches. The work was done well. One thing is that I wish I would have known the bark was going to be the type that was chosen because I don't like it. It's our fault for not asking. It's been about three weeks since the work has been completed and we are very happy with the work. When we decide to do our front yard we will give them a call for sure. I would recommend them at the least for something simple as our yard was something super simple. read more

They did work for us a little while back and I didn't review it right away but was on my to do list. They did an extended part of our driveway, dog run and small fence. The drain line went from the backyard to the front of the house where the lawn was and where we wanted the driveway extended. I asked where they were going to relocate the drain and I was told they, "would take care of it." Well, they cut it and pretty much buried it. This does not work too well in the Northern California rain. So now the rain drains out the side of the driveway and I am hoping the cement work will not collapse under the weight of a vehicle, especially if the neighbors decide to extend their driveway in our direction. The dog run on the side of the house is what you would expect. The drains were elevated and the work is fine. The small fence that encloses the dog run is what was expected and paid for. The downfall with the fence is when they painted it, they sprayed the house. When we pointed it out, and stated we would not pay until the paint was fixed; they came out and paint matched the house and fixed it. Unknowing to me, the owner showed up in his pajamas, after dark, before I was home from work and before we could check the work in the light to collect to collect his money. Very unprofessional and wouldn't do work with, or recommend this business to anyone. They were reasonably priced and readily available, and we know why. read more

I guess what I learned is that I should have taken pictures of the entire area each day before and after the workers were there. Salens guys were rude actually but I hoped a nice driveway was worth it. An example is that they came back 3 days letter to remove the wood from the concrete, but didn't tell me they were coming, just let themselves in my backyard to access my hose and knocked over my chicken's food and water and got it all wet. They also scared me since I didn't expect a man outside my window on my property. But then they broke a window next to where they were working and sitting and Salen said he can't do anything about it. He said it was an old break - but it isn't. I'm a single mom and slowly trying to improve my home one project at a time so It's so hard when people do stuff like this. Life advice is never let any worker on your property without dated before and after photos. Otherwise the job will be more expensive when you can't eye-witness-prove damage. Concrete does looks nice and Salen himself comes off as a nice man. read more

I do not like to give bad reviews but I feel I need to warn other homeowners. I have a landscape plan detailed with very specific plant varieties. Salen's was recommended by my neighbor. Mr. Singh gave me a reasonable price to implement "according to plans." Well, there lies one of the problems. (1) The plants were installed late December, early January when nothing was blooming so I could not tell that they were putting the wrong plants in. As they started to bloom I noticed them and they did replace the lavender and cannas, bleeding heart, and others. They installed some plants with the labels attached and others with no labels. Those just happen to be the wrong varieties. Now, my two Rose of Sharon's and three Dietes grandiflora fortnight lilies are blooming and I'm still discovering (6 months later in June) that " hey! that's not the variety on my plan!" Unfortunately for me, they only guarantee their work for 90 days. Now I know why. (2) They installed 92 plants and trees on one drip line, removing my other existing valves. The trees that require long, slow watering to develop deep roots, the drought resistant plants, and the tropical plants that require more water, all on one line. So some plants are drying up while others are drowning and developing rust. (3) When planting the plants, they dig a hole the exact same size as the container and plop the plant down in the hole! This is a professional landscape company in business over 20 years? All gardening literature states you have to dig a hole twice the size and deeper than the pot, amend the soil, and loosen the root-bounds roots so that they grow downward. I was working most of the time while all this was going on, so once I saw what was going on, I mentioned it to Salen and he made the excuse that they put an agriform tablet by the plants to break up the clay. They also buried the leaves of plants under the bark and rocks and the leaves rotted. (4) You never know when they are going to show up. We kept the dogs inside all day, expecting them to show up and they didn't and no phone call or text. They were supposed to be here early like 7:30 and sometimes they wouldn't show up until 9 or later or never. (5) There are other things that they did not do "according to plan" such as getting my approval on the rocks before installing and they were not to put rocks up to the base of the plants and they did. I had to pull it away and place compost there myself. Existing roots were not removed so the old unwanted bushes keep sprouting up. I was told just keep spraying round-up on it. It will stop in a year or two! I ended up having to hire someone after them to replant the plants correctly and dig a trench in the soil so that the drip wouldn't keep popping up above the bark as it was like the lockness monster throughout the yard. I do have to say they did an excellent job on my concrete steps and round patio and walkway in the back and the dry creek (The two stars). Their workers are friendly and clean up after themselves. The yards look beautiful thanks to my landscape designer. If it weren't for the dead plants I keep replacing and wrong bushes and the irrigation nightmare, my dream yard almost came true. Instead, it's been my landscape nightmare worrying about my trees. Buyer beware, you are forewarned. read more

I'm rating this 1 star because the job was very sloppy and my property was damaged in the process of removing old concrete to pour new concrete. The crew ripped up the bottoms of my garage door frames which were perfectly intact previously. When I sent Salen pictures of the damage and asked that he repair it, his response was that he couldn't do anything about it because it was dry rot and that I'll have to change the whole frame to fix it. He also said that these things normally get damaged or break. In my experience with contractors, they have never damaged part of my property to do a job and say that it was just part of the process. There was also cement mix splatter on my front door, around the bottom of the post in front of my door and on other existing concrete, large concrete chunks and dried up concrete pieces left in my front yard, along with dozens of nails and pieces of wood that was used to hold the concrete in place when pouring. My son's father convinced Salen to have his crew come and clean up the mess they left behind. They removed the concrete from the front door post and cleaned up the wood and concrete chips. There are large chunks of concrete that spilled through the frames they used to pour the concrete and we're told that they can't be removed because it will chip the concrete we had poured so now I'll have to figure out a way to cover them up with the landscaping I'll do. It has been a week since the concrete was poured and there is still discoloration, some lighter and some darker. I'm hoping the discoloration will fade within the next week. Overall, we are unhappy with the job and the concrete looks terrible. I would never recommend this company to anyone. read more

WOW! Who would have ever thought getting somebody to come out to our house to give us a quote on doing an addition of a flagstone patio in our backyard would be so hard. Before Salen's Landscaping, we tried to manage our backyard for years. We had large, heavy water hoses covering all areas because there was no sprinkler system. The ground was not level, and our knees would hurt whenever we had to walk across the yard. After years of failed DIY attempts, we selected a professional landscaping company. After receiving estimates from three companies, we choose Salens Landscaping Inc. of Elk Grove. I started with a long list of things I wanted the company to do. Salendar Singh, the owner, walked through and gave an estimate on everything. It was way over my budget to do everything, so I took time, decided what was most important, and stored the other ideas for a future project. The landscaping project: Level the backyard, install a sprinkler system, and install sod. The day before the landscapers were due to arrive; I changed my project to include making the yard drought-tolerant. (Considering we were in a drought) I was pleased there was no problem with my change request. I am so glad we hired these professionals. Little did I know that the initial cleanup step was essential to the project. All our DIY disasters had to be removed and junked to make a clean slate for the backyard. All the weeds, wild plants, and old sheds were removed. Once everything was uncovered, we saw the damage that squirrels and underground critter burrowers caused. The company handled that by including an additional cement walkway connected to the path. Many workers completed the landscaping project. A curbing company specializing in curbing, a cement installer focusing on the walkways, and the cleanup crew, did just that; the sod and stone install completed by a team of three. We hired Salen's Landscaping Inc., and now we are enjoying the beautiful results of our outdoor living space. Drought-tolerant backyard with ease of maintenance. They installed a drainage system, so there will be no more flooding due to heavy rains. My yard is level, I can walk around, and my knees don't hurt. There is a sprinkler system, a fountain for the garden, and fresh sod. I am happy. Salen's did an excellent job. The workers were professional and stayed on task. Each one focused on their work, and things flowed. I am happy with the work and the customer service. We left them alone, and they did complete the landscaping job beyond our expectations. They don't return phone calls. Had someone out to the property about installing a french drainage system, and regrading my backyard. The inspection took about two minutes, no measurements or anything. I called the following week and left five separate voicemails over the course of the week to get the estimate, but they won't call back. WOW ! I have 5 acres and it was all dirty. I knew exactly what I wanted but was not sure if any landscaping company would have the same vision. I called a few places to come out and give me quotes and sketch something up for me, but they were either giving outrageous prices or they seem too scared. So I eventually found Salen's Landscaping and I worked with a young man by the name of Aaron. He was very helpful and knew exactly what I wanted. They fully landscaped my front/ side and back yard. It was about 3 acres which was a lot of work, but they finished it quickly. Planted 100 redwoods around my entire yard with a perfect dip system, did the front/ side of my yard with grass with tons of trees, and put up a nice metal or steel fence on the front with pillars. Salen provided a fair and competitive estimate and was the only one that gave us the initial confidence that he could fix our drainage issue (essentially a back yard lake during heaving rains and back lawn that never dried out in the summer) Salen and his crew were professional and efficient in their work. The thing that caught my attention with this company besides their unbeatable price was that they always showed up exactly when they said they would and sometimes early. My wife wanted a rock-wall raised flower garden put in our front yard. We had Salendar Singh come out and give us an estimate. He was nice and very professional. We told him that we had to consider other estimates. He understood. My wife and I talked for about 10 seconds and agreed that we wanted Salen's to do the job so we stopped him before he drove off and contracted to have the work done. The workers who did the job were just like Salendar. They were nice, polite, worked hard, came when they were supposed to, communicated with us and were very professional. We are very pleased with the job and all of our neighbors say the garden looks fantastic. We did have one problem though at the end of the job. I didn't want to call Salen's because sometimes you get grief when you've already paid. The company was amazing. Salendar came out and had a crew there very soon and they took care of the problem. No haggling or hassle or issue. They were so great about it that our opinion of the company rose even higher. I can't believe I never reviewed Salen's. We used them last year to put steps in front of our house. I found a picture of staggered steps and printed it out. I called around to get quotes and Salen came by the same day to see the picture and the area we wanted worked. His quote was good, and we have no complaints on the work done. Everything in the quote was delivered and on time. Salen worked with us to give us what we wanted and was easy to work with. A large tree was recently removed and even though the stump was ground, there were a lot of roots left that Salen's crew took care of. Over all took two days, basically because of the stubborn roots. We decided to add cultured stone at the last minute and Salen was able to add that in for us, despite being a last minute request. Over all, we are very happy with what we have after a year. I have a new home. A large backyard of dirt. I shopped around to get some trees planted, put in a lawn, and put in bark and gravel. The prices I got from others were so much more and I felt I was dealing with a used car salesman. Salen came in, had a very clear process to give me a quote. The price was 50% of others and very fair. The project was done through rainy weather but they were on top of this and did everything they could do to get the job done. Needing our backyard landscaped, we called 8 landscapers. 5 never called back, 1 said he was too busy and 1 said they could come out to do an estimate in a month. I had seen a few Salen signs around the neighborhood and just happened to catch Arron Salen as he was getting into his truck at a neighbor's house. He took my number, as he was headed to another job, and said he would call to set up a time to do an estimate. He called later that day and was on time for the appointment a few days later. He gave us a quote at the appointment, in writing. We had them do about 600 sq. ft. of sod, bender board, bark, 15 shrubs, 4 trees, sprinklers, drip and valves. They were able to start the next day and were done in 3, as quoted. We had added some shrubs and trees on the last day, and they were able to accommodate without adding additional time to the job. I'm blown away by how my front yard looks! My husband and I wanted to have a front yard that was maintenance free and drought friendly. Therefore, we figured our only options were rock, sand, concrete or turf. We searched the internet for different designs so we had a pretty good idea of what we wanted. We requested a few quotes from different landscaping companies. The first company knocked down all of our ideas, saying, "you don't want that because it's too expensive" without even giving us a ball park estimate. Another landscaper said, "it will look ugly if you don't have any plants." Ugh!! We were so frustrated that we were just going to throw in the towel and stick with what it's current state was, mulch heaven... Until, my neighbor recommended Salen. I was a bit skeptical at first because multiple landscapers have disappointed us, but, after my husband and I met with Salen it was like we were seeing stars for the first time! We couldn't believe how open he was to our suggestions/ ideas, even making recommendations of what he thought would work out for us while sticking to budget! Not once did he make us feel like our decisions were horrible or stupid.. he also took us to look at a similar project he worked on to show us possibilities. Seriously, who does that?! It really shows the awesome customer service he and his company provides. Oh and they are totally in with the times, I can text him with any questions I have and expect a response in a timely matter. We are just about done with our backyard project and we couldn't be happier with Salen and his crew. We started with an idea and shared that with Salen at the start of the pandemic. Being the professional that he is, he turned our idea into a dream backyard. I appreciate his confidence and professionalism above everything else. We are also pleased with his communication, if he says his crew will be there at 7:00...they are there at 7:00. Due to the pandemic, some things were delayed just a bit, all of which were out of anyone's control. Salen communicated all minor delays with us and continued to update us throughout the whole process.
