I love this place! It' always fun to listen to the friendly banter and it's a salon where you can really feel comfortable talking about anything. I often see clients come in just to say hello to Cindy. Cindy btw always gives me the best haircuts. She really takes the time to listen to what I want and I can be picky. just returned from the most relaxing spa day. I was treated to a microdermabrasion facial, and a pedicure. danika was the one that performed them both, and she has the magic touch folks. i had her the first time i went here, and i had her today. she is amazing! she will transport you to another place and totally relax you. she knows exactly what she's doing, applies the right amount of pressure, and she's just a pro. there was a mixup the last time i was there, but the owner called and offered to make it right, which was this visit today. she also came and asked how my treatment was, to make sure everything was good. the staff is wonderful, the spa is super clean, and the decor is pleasing to the eye. I was looking for a place to just get a pedicure, I called and made an appointment, the nail tech was very nice, she did a good job on my toes, the place is a little outdated and not the most relaxing atmosphere, but for the price of the service I would say its a good place to just run in when you cant make it to your normal spot. I just read the reviews below, about the receptionist being rude. This was my first time here and the massage therapist, Jeff, was awesome and worth the slight rudeness as I entered. The blonde doing hair greeted me 10am, and was annoyed because I I didn't know ....and could not hear from the traffic .....that she was buzzing me in. ( locked for security). I went there this weekend to redeem a Groupon for a hydrating paraffin facial. I made back-to-back appointment for myself and sister for noon and 1pm. I live an hour away, so I ended up breaking a couple speeding laws to get there on time. However, when I arrived I was told that my appointment was actually 12:30pm. So I had to wait (but will say the appointment then started promptly at 12:30pm). The decor was nice, and the place was clean and pretty quiet, especially in the back where services were actually rendered. My aesthetician was a young Asian woman, I wish I could give her name, but she never volunteered it. I had to ask her to walk me through what the paraffin facial entailed before we started....(in the past normally this info is volunteered, but I dont know if that's normal or not) Actually, I never learned anyone's name for the almost 1.5 hours that I was there. The receptionist offered me water when I arrived, after saying I was early, and that was pretty much it for conversation. That said, the facial was excellent and oh-so-relaxing. By the second time she applied the warm towels to my face I was falling asleep, and the texture of my skin felt AMAZING when done. It literally looked like I had foundation on..super smooth. A few hours after my sis and I had left we got a call from the receptionist stating they had an incomplete number for the Groupon codes I'd given when first booking my appointment. Turns out she had missed the first number. Not too hard to believe that she probably messed up something when booking my appointment time also. Overall, I would give the facial 5 stars and the front/reception 3 stars, book the appointment but double check your appointment time and don't expect the warmest reception. read more

I've gone here several times with vouchers and have loved all my experiences: friendly staff, great customer service (the first no-chip I got fell off and they called me because others had complained and gave me a new one complimentary). I have since gone back for several no-chip manicures and recently got a massage from Kim, the room was a bit small and I'm not sure how bigger people would fit on the table I was on (I'm 5'9" /145 and maybe they have bigger tables in the other rooms/couples massage room). This place is GREAT! Everything is so nice and neat & very organized. Prices are VERY reasonable, I love it here. Donica gave me my first microdermabrasion session. I was scared at first, but she calmed me down and ran through every step that was going to happen. She was super nice, very knowledgeable, and left my face so incredibly smooth! Next was Jeff, he really worked out the deep tension in my back and legs where I needed it most. He was VERY professional and I greatly appreciated that coming from a male massage therapist. I had received a bad hair cut the week prior from another salon and she knew how upset I was. She worked with what I had and gave me the cutest bob. I have lived in the west rogers park area for a while, and heading north on western ave on the way home from work i was waiting at a traffic light at western and lawrence. while i was sitting there, a storefront caught my attention. It was Total Image Salon and Spa. Luckily the traffic was a little heavy and it put me a little back from the intersection where this salon is located. I had to get my hair cut for an up-coming engagement, and i was not so happy with the salon i had been going to (erratic hours, always a different sylist, inconsistent results, etc.). so i went around the block and parked with-in a few doors of Total Image. I walked in, and was greeted by a nice blonde lady named Cindy. She asked what she could do for me, and i mentioned that i was in need of a hair-cut. She was just finishing up another client and offered me some beverages and snacks. THAT was perfect because i was a little hungry. As i waited for about 7 or 8 minutes while this lady finished her client, i looked around. The salon was very clean (even around the cutting stations where the chair meets the floor), was well stocked with hair products, and it was nice and comfortable. There were lots of current magazines and periodicals to read and look at, and there was nice music playing softly too. After the previous customer left, i was asked to sit in one of the chairs. This surprised me: she actually asked what look i was going for. Just about all salons i have ever been to just start telling me what they want to do. I dont care for that. So we spoke for a few minutes, and she understood what i wanted. My hair was washed with comfortable temperature water, and i was now ready to see if Cindy could handle my hair. I have a lot of cow licks and its pretty unruly. A few minutes into the cut i decided to change the style i wanted. i told Cindy and she said no problem. Im glad she was able to incorporate what was already done into the new idea i had. Didnt seem to be a problem because when all was said and done, it looked exactly like i wanted. This was all in 1998 or 1999, and i am still going here. I have had everything from cuts, styles, lightening, darkening, coloring, i even checked out their skin services in the other part of the salon. The styling products are ones i like and want to use, and the prices have always been great. Bottom line is, i have been going back to Total Image for almost 10 years now, and have never once thought of looking for another stylist. The reason is simple: i have never regretted walking in the door. The service has always been consistent and, i might add, fun. The only problem i have ever had was when i wanted a hair-cut on monday, when the salon is closed. I cant fault them though, the hours are right on their door and on their web-site that i just looked at. Check this place out, you might find it to be your permanent salon as well. read more

Everything I stated in this post is true and absolutely represents the poor customer service that this salon represents. I would love to meet this Cynthia in person so that she can see that I do not know her nor have I ever worked for her! I'm not sure why Salon 44 has received 5 star reviews. Granted it wasn't all together terrible, but it is hopefully just experiencing major growing pains since it is new. I bought a Living Social GC for a no-chip and like the previous reviewer, my no-chip was also promised to last 2 weeks and chipped in the first week; I've had several no-chips at other salons and they last up to 2.5-3 weeks. The owner was also a bit crass; I walked in feeling like I was intruding. Strange. However, the spa was decorated nicely, and Bonus* they gave me a free cuticle oil and a candy cane for the holidays. There are so many spas in Chicago to chose from, they should definitely step up there game. read more

Salon 44 Spa is very lovely in appearance, but we were immediately greeted by the stench of cigarette smoke and a very unfriendly stylist being forced to work the front desk. Our massage therapists, Kim and Linda were professional and thorough. The room we were in could have used a dimmer switch on the lights, though. Wouldn't go back, even with my bad back. read more

I discovered Salon 44 through a discount offer for no chip manicures and I'm thrilled to find such a sweet neighborhood salon. Demi is the manicurist. She's awesome. I've been back 4 times, once a month as the no chip lasts that long! Got to love it. I'm getting pedicures too. Check when you make your appointment as they offer deals for different days of the week and usually have some kind of monthly special. I haven't tried the aesthetician but I see a lot of beaming customers coming out of the back room. I like this place because it is low key and clean. Cindy, the owner and hair stylist is friendly and accommodating. They always call me a day in advance to remind me and offer me something to drink (soft, no booze). I was there when Cindy was celebrating her birthday and enjoyed cake and decorations. These people are fun and know their craft. read more

This Salon lacks major professionalism and organization. First of all, when you call to make an appointment, you are treated as if you are bothering them. I scheduled a couples massage that I bought off of living social, showed up on time, and they only had one massage therapist. We waited in the stench of cigarette smoke while we listened to the lady at the counter calling around for other massage therapists, and would curse when the therapists' weren't able to come in. We ended up canceling our appointment, since we were unable to be served. Not impressed at all and I wish I could get my money back from the living social deal. read more

The owner called and invited my husband back for a complimentary couples massage since we weren't satisfied with our last one which was great and shows over the top appreciation for their customers. This place is terrible. Stay away. I purchased a couples massage from living social. Spa44 canceled on me twice before I was able to use the voucher. First time was 1 hour before the appointment. Second time was within 24 hours. On the third try they kept the appointment. We arrived on time and waited for 25 minutes without being told what was going on. The receptionist was definitely terrible in person and over the phone as others have said. While waiting a customer called and to get off the phone with them she told them she had a call on the other line. Lie! The massage therapists were average- not the best or worst massage I've ever had. But the massage was cut short 10 minutes! What a rip off! It was valid between 10am and 7:30 pm but when I called at 12:15pm to schedule an appt. for that day, I was told that the only appt they had was at 6:30pm. Really? The staff are nice and the place is very clean and comfortable, but...I didn't really enjoy my massage all that much. Tammy just didn't work out my tension. It was more of an all over rubbing than a deep tissue massage. I had a facial here and it was great - don't remember the name of the tech, but it was relaxing and comfortable. Also, Salon 44 gets props for honoring a soon-to-expire Living Social coupon for a massage I had in May 2012. When I called 2 weeks before the expiration date, the woman who scheduled me said that they were honoring the coupon past the expiration date because there was no way to schedule me in time. It certainly would have been their right to say 'hard cheese' to me when I called to schedule, but they didn't, and I was able to set the appointment for 2 weeks after the expiration date. I bought a livingsocial coupon for a 1 hr. message. when I called to make an appointment I was greeted with a rude woman, who had a very snotty attitude when I gave her my name because it was hard for her to pronounce she made me spell it out and asked me "is that mexican". After that she gave me the run around with the availability for the appt. So the appt. came around and being Im coming from the southside there was a lot of traffic and I realized I wasnt going to make it. I called they gave me attitude again, then they marked the coupon used since I didnt comply with the cancellation policy. Yesterday was my first and last visit to Total Image Salon and Spa!! In these tough economic times, everyone is watching how they spend their money and let me be the first to tell you that you should save your dollar and not patronize this establishment. I decided to try Total Image, after seeing the advertisement for 50% off services for the month of March. I called to set my appointment for a massage and again inquired about the special and if it was still valid. The person I was talking to stated it was and never said anything different. I arrived to meet my masseuse and there was another woman working on someones hair who just looked up at me as if she was unsure as to why I was there. I completed my massage and went to check out and the second worker, who I later learned to be a manager named Cindy was at the desk. She begins to quote me the full price of the massage and I immediately told her there must be some mistake and reiterated my earlier conversation. Cindy begins to tell me very nastily that I must have misunderstood and she's not doing anything to accommodate me. I asked her why no one stated when I came in that the type of massage I requested was not on the special and she stated that I just should've known that. I asked her what her problem was and told her that she's exhibiting very poor customer service to which she just sighed and said "yeah, yeah". I told her again that I would pay the amount I agreed to and she asked me the tip amount. I told her and unbeknownest to me, she swipes my card for the regular amount WITHOUT ANY AUTHORIZATION and says "well, your card isn't signed anyway" and I say that is so that people can ask for my ID. She just looks at me and doesn't say anything. I ask her "well aren't you going to ask for my ID?!" and she says she isn't going to bother. I tell her that what she did was the equivalent to stealing and I would be stoping the charge immediately.I go home and call the bank to stop this charge. I call the shop today to find out the owners name and number and who answers the phone... of course, Ms. NoCustomerService herself and gets nervous when I ask for that information. Once she assessed that it was me, she says "well, you can talk to me" at which time I tell her I don't want to talk to her because she's the problem. She hangs up the phone!!! I have called the Better Business Bureau and my banking institution which is filing a claim against this business. Cindy is by far the worst person I have dealt with in a long time and shouldn't be allowed anywhere near the public. I'm not sure if hair dresser is her true profession but the state of her hair suggests that she should find another. This business deserves none of your money because your dollar is not valued here!!!!! I hope the true owner sees this and contacts me because I still may be filing theft charges based on her unauthorized use of my credit card. GO ANYWHERE ELSE OTHER THAN HERE. read more

I bought the Living Social thing for the no chip manicure. They are in my neighborhood and I was really rooting for it to be good. It wasn't. The girl who did my nails was super super sweet and did a good job on my pedicure. My no chip chipped however after 5 days as opposed to the two weeks that was promised. I discovered salon 44 late last year through a living social deal for a no chip. It has been hands down the best no chips i have ever gotten. i can usually stretch it 3 weeks (have went 4 a few times and just dealt with the outgrowth) but it never chips. So many colors to choose from and now they have the magnetic no chip which i love! Danika is awesome and one of the main reasons i go back there. She does such a detailed job and it's easy to sit and chat the entire time with her. easy parking and good hours. highly recommended! read more

My boyfriend and I went to Salon 44 today for a couples massage with a Living Social Deal. I have nothing but good things to say about our experience. First of all, the first few times we called with our tiny windows of availability (we have opposite schedules), Salon 44 was full, but put us on a waiting list, and called us whenever they had openings, which I thought was awesome! Now, the massage itself was AMAZING. I saw Steve, and unfortunately, I can't remember the name of the awesome woman who worked on my boyfriend, but we are both thrilled with what they did. They listened to our requests for pressure, and even told us what we can do on our own to help our problem areas. Then, at the end, they gave us a voucher for another massage at the same price we paid for this one. We will DEFINITELY be back. Whatever issues they may have had in the past, Salon 44 has gotten it together and is definitely the place to go! read more

I could not be happier with my decision to go to Salon 44 Spa, wow! Besides enjoying great conversation throughout my entire appointment, my hair looks amazing. I was certainly skeptical choosing a place for highlights that I found off of yelp, but had no other choice as I do not have any friends here who have highlights to ask for a recommendation. From when I walked in until I left I felt totally taken care of. I am very particular about my hair and always tell people that I want the same as what I have, however I find with blonde hair a lot of people like to make it chunky or make their own decisions. Not the case here, Cindy completely listened to what I wanted done and even helped it look a little better. Will definitely be going back. Then if it wasn't you who did the offer that was accepted and for which I got kicked out from my contract, then why would you lie that you weren't at the building?? And asking about the place for sale.. And why would the real estate agent tell me the buyer doesn't want to know whom they are??? That place was bought under a different name cause the new buyer doesn't wanna know no one whom it is! And then the real estate agent hung up on me probably realizing that he said something he shouldn't have said. Could have been that in that moment he may have realized that maybe it was exactly me whom shouldn't have known about it. And he screwed up by saying that. I was so upset, you can only imagine. So I will leave it up to you to think for yourself if this person was Cindy or not, but I will keep you posted if I find out something new and more concrete. I will post an updated review. We'll sue, and hope to be able to get the home back, I don't know yet if that's possible, the attorney will know what exactly can be done. To Cindy: How much I wish i could believe it wasn't you. The thing is once it gets posted the new owner of this place it will be investigated. I have no doubt i heard you and saw you downstairs at the building the day after you came to see the apt - to help me- figure out how much was going to cost fixing up the place. Phn calls are recorded and in legal cases can be requested a subpoena of the conversations between certain periods of times. It can be proved how the situation has been manipulated into somebody's favor and to cause our contract to be cancelled. And if you have ties with the new owner in any way that can be proved also. I've been Cindy's customer for almost 20 years since I first came to this country. And overall I've been pretty satisfied. In the first place I used to come to the Salon 44 ( back then known as Total Image Salon) for the esthetician who used to work for Cindy: kasia. Her facials were great and I used to get them at first twice a month, then once a month, and that for about two years, and as my skin improved and my pimples went away a lot less often, but kept appointments on and off to get my eyebrows done by Cindy. Slowly I have found out that Cindy studies interior design and fixes homes also ( paints, etc.) As Cindy lost some of her main customers as some of her employees have left and taken their customers with them Cindy has let me know that she was working on some homes for some clients since her salon business is slow. An apartment across from where I am living (my boyfriend actually, but I'm there all the time, so it does feel as if we were living together) has become available for purchase at an unbeatable price, not seen much around the neighborhood for a large 2 bedroom apartment unit. The place wasn't in very good shape though, needed fixes, so not being familiar with how much can possibly cost fixing such a place, It crossed my mind that (of course for a fee) Cindy from Salon 44 might not mind making some extra money and help me take a look at this place to know how much would it cost and help me fix the place. But, now comes the best part: Cindy must have liked the place so much, she made a higher offer and lined up as a cash buyer. ( yeah we made the mistake and showed her the place before the closing was finalized we had gotten it under contract, but I guess with money you can buy everything, so she managed to cause us to get kicked out of the contract, together with real estate agent Scott Fishman and the attorney Mike Gunderson, we are going for a law suit against these people, and we are sure that it will come up to light whom this "mysterious" cash buyer is, or cash buyers if there will be a flip, cause she denies it, and when I called up the real estate agent after got posted that was sold( without saying who) to ask about the new ownership of the home, told him we were looking to purchase from the new owners if he could at least share our information and have them call us cause we were looking to purchase if they were going to sell it for a profit, yes we wanted it that badly, even if i was just going to make some money Cindy's, we didnt actually care too much who was behind it, not because we didnt care at all, but because it was that much we wanted this home. So when we called the real estate agent stated that the new owner doesn't want to sell, and that they didn't want to know whom they were so that was purchased in someone's else's name! Well we are going to court with these people, and everything will be investigated, because we feel things have been manipulated into someone's favor and to cause for our contract to expire before being able to close so everybody here could get more money and cash, we were manipulated by receiving misleading advice from the real estate attorney who was recommended to us by the seller's agent. Yes we didn't have any experience with this things and didn't know that you shouldn't go with an attorney that the seller's agent advises, creates conflict of interest from the start. You live and learn, and oh boy didn't we! As of right now I can't prove that's Cindy behind this, as the mysterious cash buyer, (but by her attitude and everything signaling her including her lies) but it will be investigated, and I will keep you guys posted about this, cause I don't want in the future no one to go thru what we had to go thru with this situation, it is quite hurtful when you are set up in such a way, and from the lawyers part there is no doubt, so we are going with a law suit anyway,cause too many irregularities there, that have caused our contract to expire without being able to close on the deal, and no extension to be able to close. We are waiting on the attorney we want to sign up with to come back from vacation, cause it's Christmas now. We are going with a full law suit against these people.
