Adorable succulents and a cute little table on the patio. I arrived early, so I asked if I could keep my vehicle in the parking lot while I shopped in the area and the team was supportive. I love this Salon! I used to go here about 6 years ago, but then my stylist moved out of town. I was really excited when my current stylist and masseuse, Jon Haddeland, moved here earlier this month. If you have never had a massage from Jon, book one immediately. You will not regret it. I have sampled masseuses at 5 star resorts in multiple countries, and no one compares to Jon. Over the last 6 years that I have been a client of his, he has also made my hair the envy of friends and strangers alike. People stop me in the street to rave about my color regularly. He takes his time, and aims for perfection, so he's usually running a little late. I have always found it to be worth the wait, and the retro couch in the lobby is so comfy I hardly notice. It was my first time at Salon 544, but it felt like I had been going there for years. She was incredibly friendly and genuinely interested in what I would say. And she was hilarious! That being said, it was a super comfortable atmosphere! As far as my haircut, it was even more fabulous! I've never had my hair short, but I was feeling adventurous (and nervous). I've been going to Sherry for about 6 years and she is simply great. Many places I had been to in the past had an odd procedure of washing your hair -- and then when your hair is soaked and plastered to your head -- they ask what you want to do. Um well... I could have showed you before it was washed, but now it's kind of hard to describe... Sherry always does an interview with you while your hair is combed in the style you walked in with and then after talking it over she takes you back to get it washed. She's so good that sometimes I just tell her to do whatever she thinks looks good and every time it comes out great. She really pays attention to the little things that makes YOUR hair unique. Conversation during the hair cut is never forced or awkward, it's very fun and natural, like we're sitting having coffee together. I booked an appointment for a partial balayage with this salon and did not get the service I booked. I had been wanting to get this done forever and finally saved enough. When I arrived, the stylist insisted a "baby highlight" was all I needed. I explained I wanted the balayage, in part because I wasn't going to keep it up and wanted the highlights with the best chance of growing out nicely. She insisted and I got the sense she didn't know how to do a balayage but eventually I gave in- I was going to be in a wedding soon and didn't have time to rebook at another salon. All she did was streaks, it looked fine for a week but as soon as the new growth came in there was a stark line between the highlights and new growth. And let me be clear, when I say "insisted" I mean she talked down to me and told me what I wanted. That's not a consultation. She was also proud of the fact that she hadn't changed her own hairstyle in over 20 years...which her fried highlighted "money pieces" could attest to. Just because you're older than your client doesn't mean they want to be told what to do. If she couldn't do it they never should have taken my booking. Finally, I explained my hair is extremely thick and I needed it thinned enough for summer. It's been less than 6 weeks and my hair is a thcket because she just would not cut enough off. She kept saying "Your layers are so nice, I'll just follow those for a trim." Waste of time, money, and my hair. This was one of the worst hair appointments I've had, will not be going back. read more

Omg Jon is the most amazing hair magician I have ever had!! I read the other reviews on Yelp and decided to give him a call. I got extremely lucky and was able to get in the next day do to a last minute cancellation. I recently moved back from LA and had yet to find a stylist that made me feel beautiful until today. I couldn't stop looking at myself in the rear view mirror. I asked for my normal mahogany red brown with highlights and Jon took it to another level. He spent 3 1/2 hours weaving three different colors into my hair and then cutting it just right to frame my face and show off the three colors. It is bright and fun, perfect for summer. I will never go to another stylist. I am dragging my mom and my husband to see Jon the first chance I get. I would have paid over $300 for a stylist in LA to even do half of the work that Jon did. He is the biggest secret on the Central Coast so book an appointment soon before he gets booked for the forceeable future. Oh, and he gives the most amazing scalp massage when he shampoos you, I just about fell asleep. I will post pics in the morning as indoor lighting does not do the color any justice. The salon itself is very relaxing and eclectic. Ask for Aurajoy. I've gone through three SLO stylists over the past 20 years and have finally found someone who excels at both cut and color. The results are consistent: a fabulous a-line cut everytime; one that grows out so well that I'm able to enjoy it at 2 weeks, 6 weeks, and 10 weeks. I also get a wonderful semi-permanent color that is kind to my hair and gently fades as my hair grows so that my roots barely show. I came to Aurajoy three years ago when I turned 40 wishing to trade my gold blonde highlights for a more sophisticated ash blonde. The stylist with whom I had been working tried but could only manage to deposit gold. Other stylists with whom I had consulted were also unwilling and explained to me that ash colors carried unknown risks of unsightly greenish tones. Aurajoy listened to me and prescribed a remedial color treatment for growing out the old and tired highlights; one that worked exactly as she said it would. I got and continue to get exactly the color I wanted, plus a great cut everytime. I couldn't be happier with the look and health of my hair. Her chair is immediately to the left when you walk in (or at least it was in September). Such a kind, lovely person and she fixed what had been a progression of three pretty bad haircuts I had gotten (I kept going back to the same person because I kept thinking maybe she was having a bad day or something but at this rate I was going to end up bald).
