In the past I've struggled to find people who can cut my stubbornly straight hair. And after moving from the East Bay to San Francisco, I again wanted to find someone nearby who could deal with it. I've been coming to Geary Salon for the last 6 months and have gotten my hair cut by both Sam and Anthony. And I can't say enough good things about them. Sam and Anthony, and I assume everyone else at Geary Salon, is professional, meticulous, and fast. As soon as you're in the chair, they're ready (or remember) how to help you decide how you're going to style your hair. And for $45, as soon as they start, they are done and have given you perhaps the best haircut you've had in years. Sam cut my hair a couple of weeks back, and I couldn't be more happy with the results. It was my first haircut in six months (side note: I thought about posting a before and after, but I'll spare your eyes from that), so I practically forgot what to ask for and didn't expect him to be able to salvage such an atrocious mangle of hair. Thankfully, Sam helped me talk through my options, and he delivered probably the best haircut I've received in years. I felt like a whole new man after leaving the salon, and I still love the haircut now after it's grown out a bit. Sam was incredibly professional and patient in helping to guide me through some styles. This isn't something that I've considered in the past, but I feel like he had a remarkable sense of my head shape, hair type, and quirks/cowlicks, and designed up and delivered a masterpiece of a haircut. It really just works. I feel like I've had some great hairstylists in the past whose cuts I've really enjoyed, but this one just feels different. Like it's custom-tailored to perfection specifically for me, which isn't something I feel like I've experienced before. In addition, he even helped me with some styling tips and suggestions to help overcome my quarantine hair styling lull that has made my hair less predictable than in the past. Aside from the haircut itself, Sam was a really friendly guy to chat with, and I enjoyed our conversation throughout the cut. Admit it, sometimes the hairdresser small talk can be awkward. But I actually really enjoyed talking with Sam. Also, it was incredibly easy to book the appointment with him online, and I felt that the cut was super reasonable for how immaculate it was. If I had to nitpick one thing, I would have liked to get a neck shave up to the hairline in the back, but that doesn't detract at all from the overall experience. I think this is the third review I've left/updated in the past 6 years or so.. But again and again, Geary Salon finds a way to amaze me. Now I'm EXTREMELY picky about who cuts my hair. We've all had horrible cuts and know how bad things can get. Nobody wants to wear a hat for a month because something went wrong. I literally will not let anyone else touch my hair. Apology to Anthony Booked an appointment with Anthony on a Friday at 10:30am. He was with his other client until 10:40 but I didn't have an issue with it. I read on Yelp that they hold conversations with their clients and it's honestly a nice experience. He was into the convo with the guy he was cutting hair for but focused on his work, very professional. When it was my turn, Anthony was really friendly and welcoming. I usually just go to a Chinese salon and get a simple cut but I wanted to look extra good for my vacation coming up so I wanted more of a style cut. I didn't know what I want exactly so I just said short on the side and trim the top so I can still spike it - like a fauxhawk and Anthony even gave suggestions. I said yeah man I trust you and let him do his work. We had small talk and before I knew it, my haircut was done and took only 20 mins. Now this is where it went bad and a reason why I'm writing this Yelp review as an apology letter My cut was $35 so I handed $40. Anthony asked me if I wanted change so out of instinct, I said yes. He asked me how much and immediately said "wait I'll get you change" and went to the back. Then it hit me. "OH RIGHT HE ASKED BECAUSE ITS COURTESY TO TIP!!" Don't get me wrong, I knew that because I would tip a dollar or so at my usual places for a $10 cut but I was so caught up in the conversation and stuff that I totally forgot all about it until I paid. I didn't want to make things awkward and say "actually, keep the $40" after he came back with the $5 incase he felt like he pressured me into it so I just pulled out whatever loose change I had in my wallet but it was only $2 I felt really bad after I left but I'll make sure to tip extra to make up for it my next visit when I want to look extra good. Family style vibes at this barbershop. Quick, yet quality style hair cuts as well. Eric and Anna are a mother son duo and are very very friendly. Also very patient and methodical to each patient. When I went, it was my first time, yet they've been cutting in the city for over 12 years, who knew!? Appointment based which is very strategic given how I've had to wait over an hour sometimes at other salons. Appointment based so you know your time and you don't have to wait. My hair was cut by Anna who is the owner of the salon. Very friendly, attention to detail and overall, a good experience. She is quick, yet detailed, and will do her best to give you the desired style. I've never had my hair cut under 30 mins and have it still look fashionable and clean. Anna was the first to do that. Until I tried Geary Salon and found Sam. I've been searching for my GO-TO barber for a LONG time. What I mean by that is.. I want a barber who knows my cut and gets it right every time. I want a barber that give me a quality cut at a decent cost. I want a barber that knows if I'm up for a conversation or down to stay quiet. It's tough to find that barber. And for a long time, never found him (or her). I've been to Dick's International. I've been to Temescal Alley Barbershop. Rick's Barbershop. JP Kempt. Dogpatch Barber. Emilio's Barbershop. Slide and Dapper. Sunset Barber. You name a shop in SF, Oakland, or Berkeley and I've probably tried it. I've been looking THAT long. NONE of the barbers I've tried have matched the quality, value, and service that Sam provides at Geary Salon. The man knows how to do a fade, at an unpretentious cost, with service thats unmatched. It's a local barbershop without all the hipster crap and cost, but still with a focus on perfection. My "high skin fade, trim the top" comes out perfect every time. Never a stray nick or cut on my ear or neck, like a few other shops are prone to do. And it's been a breeze to book, either through his website or through a quick text. And what's nice is Sam can read a mood. He makes pleasant conversation if you want. Or doesn't if you don't. From other reviews, they typically only accept appointments. However, I was able to walk in on a weekday morning. A no-frills hair salon, Anna has been cutting hair for 30+ years. They seem to have a lot of regulars probably because it's appointment based. I'm not very picky with my hair, but she was able to cut my hair exactly how I wanted it. I've been coming to Eric for the last 3 years and I've got to say that this is the best place to come for a haircut in the Bay Area. Eric really understands how to cut all different types of hair and hairstyles. Everyone at the shop is friendly and has fun banter. There's a nice iPad set up in front of you which allows you to watch a sports game or Netflix Show. All for a very reasonable price. The Salon follows COVID protocols and keeps the shop spick and span with the addition of face masks, new/clean haircut capes for each client, and consistent sanitation of chairs and equipment in between appointments. If you don't cut it just right based on hair growth patterns, it can stick up at all the wrong places. I dare say this is the best cut the boys have had! Not only does my haircut take less than 15 minutes, the price is very reasonable ($30 for men) and you can schedule less than 24 hours before you want a cut. The staff were friendly enough, but my haircut was shoddy. To start, I had quite a bit of hair to get rid of and my cut is in two lengths, but Anna didn't bother to figure out which part was which; she ended up cutting the hair that I was trying to keep longer along with the shorter parts. I caught her fairly quickly, but it shouldn't be my job to keep track of that. In the end Anna couldn't cut a straight line so one side of my haircut is jagged instead of straight. On top of that she didn't bother to keep it symmetrical so now I have a the haircut line about 3/4" higher on one side of my head. It's going to take many months of regrowing my hair to recover from this hack job. I guess you do get what you pay for, and the mythical reasonably priced haircut in San Francisco remains a pipe dream. If you have the sort of haircut you could do yourself in the bathroom in 30 minutes, come on down because Anna will do it in 15 but if you require skill instead of speed look elsewhere. As for "recognizing" everyone that comes there, well Anna recognized me as soon as I arrived, which was strange since I'd never been before. I guess if you pretend to recognize everyone who walks in the door, you're only wrong on their first visit. read more

My usual hairdresser was too far to trek to, so I came here based on all of the glowing Yelp reviews. However, I wish I hadn't come here. If you don't know what hairstyle you want, then this is the place for you. However, if you are intent on a specific style, I would skip this place. I just wanted face framing layers, but Anna (the hairdresser) decided to "layer" my whole head. Now, this would have been okay if the layers were even, but they were so erratic! Part of the layers in the back are so short that they stick out. I can't wait until my hair grows out. Anna, however, did a good job on the boy's hair in front of me. I have been going to Geary Salon for 1.5 years now and Sam has been my hair stylist since day one. He is great! I usually get the same haircut style, but Sam would ask me how I want it to be cut that day just so we are on the same page and there are no surprises. If I am considering something different, he would give suggestions on what I can do. He pays attention to detail as he notices areas that may need extra touches due to the bumps on my head or the shadows from the lighting. I may not notice a difference, but I appreciate that he takes the time to fix it. Sam is nice and friendly. I enjoy my conversations with him during my haircuts and he is a big basketball fan. Although his choice of favorite NBA team is questionable, his decision to be a hair stylist for men's haircuts is a smart move. I felt comfortable getting my haircut at Geary Salon as they have COVID-19 safety measures in place. Sam was wearing a mask throughout my haircut and he made sure to put hand sanitizer before and after my cut.  Also, they installed clear curtains between the stations. To preface this review, I'm going to say that I have a head/hair type--and hairstyle--that makes it hard to just go to a regular barbershop and ask for a "2-clip undercut and a trim up top" type of haircut. I was recommended to Geary Salon by a friend a while back but had my hesitations to go here because I was still of the school of thought that you get what you pay for. After enough trips to salons throughout the city, and paying $50-80 to generally leave dissatisfied, I decided to give this place a go. I called in to set an appointment for a scissor cut and Anna let me know that she'll be doing my hair. She pleasantly pushed my appointment up to accommodate something sooner (+1). I came in, showed her a photo of my similar style, and we were off. She did an amazing job of listening to what I wanted but also peppering in her recommendations based on experience. A lot of the salons I've been to have stylists who want to be an artist at work so they would listen to input but override it with their own vision. I'm sure there's a place and need for that but I personally found it to be a bit vexing. After a quick 15-20 minutes, I was cleaned up and ready to head out the door with a haircut that I was proud to show off. The salon is a no frills spot where Anna, Eric, and Anthony do great work at a price that's hard to come by in this city. For men who prefer the aforementioned "2-clip undercut and a trim up top" type of haircut, I saw Eric and Anthony giving some fresh cuts to guys sitting next to me. 10/10 would recommend. As an added bonus, I heard either Eric or Anthony command the music, "Hey Siri, play Earth, Wind, & Fire", which earns all the points for me. In a city like San Francisco, don't let price determine the quality of something you pay for; you might be spoiling an opportunity to find a diamond in the rough. I've been here twice in 4 months. I had a great experience both times. I got exactly what I wanted and for only $15. If you go during the week, especially on Tuesdays or Wednesdays, they are not as busy and will take tons of time on you. The ladies are nice and they remember your face if you chat them up. I usually go to upscale salons but with times at what they are why not get something just as good without the ambiance? I left with a 33% tip at $20. read more
