Go for a haircut - - and get an insult. I have used this barber, or stylist -- Jimmy -- for a few years. He has told me that the success of his practice is based on not just his hair-cutting but the psychological therapy that he doles out alongside it. It's true that he often asked what's happening in the neighborhood, and I asked him the same. But the last time he just, incredibly, insulted me. How he expects to get away with this sort of behavior I have no idea. I'm 85 and don't have a lot of hair to cut, truth be told. But I still tip every 4 weeks. This fellow also speeds things along at a quick march while you are there. (This may be because he is there only three days a week.) A service provider telling an elderly patron to take off his glasses and "hasten" to the shampoo bowl is disrespectful. He seems to see himself as the commander and you as the subordinate. I have patronized many businesses in my life, here and abroad. I have never been treated with such misplaced arrogance. If you are looking for a simple haircut, look elsewhere. If you want to be insulted and "analyzed" by someone with no credentials to do that, this is the place for you. As for me, I have found a nearby stylist who gives me a better haircut, and no insults. read more

Jimmy is the absolute best. I decided to bleach my virgin hair and he was able to do it in one session. Since then he's been with me on my hair journey to orange and red. Hes just a genuinely great guy. Jimmy is a highlighting savant. Jimmy rescued my hair and overall look from my bad at-home self-coloring kit snafu. Not only did he instantly know what to do to create a natural, professional look, he is an excellent listener who put me so at ease I drifted off into slumber in the salon chair while the highlighting foils were 'curing'. After he removed the foils he rinsed my hair then applied a wonderful conditioner/strengthener perfect for my very fine, thin hair. My hair texture hasn't felt this good in a very long time - whatever he used did no damage but strengthened my hair. Jimmy did all of this on a same-day basis meaning that I called in the morning and he created an appointment for me The Same Day!! All of this in a very reasonable amount of time and at a very competitive price. As someone already said, Jimmy is a hair angel! After my regular hair lady decided to stop doing hair, I had the daunting task of finding a new hair stylist. I am SO happy I found Jimmy!!! I have had my hair dyed twice (highlighted once and completely brunette the next) and cut once by Jimmy and have been 100% satisfied every time. The color is always on point and the cut may be one of the best cut/styles I've ever had. Going from medium length blonde(ish) to short brunette with full bangs can be scary, but Jimmy nailed it. I was hesitant about going to a salon in the inner sunset but the salon always looked clean while i walked by and other user reviews drew me in. So I booked an appointment with Jimmy, the owner, for a partial highlight. I couldn't be happier with the level of service and the final product. I have been there several times over the years for partial highlights and I have never been disappointed. He always gives me EXACTLY what I am asking for. I live in the area and always noted the Aveda products in the window as I'm an Aveda junkie. When it was finally time for a new hairstyle, I was sold when I looked up all the Yelp reviews and decided to add my own... I walked into the comfy space looking like Cousin It and emerged with flippy, healthy shampoo commercial hair. I LOVE my new cut! Jimmy listened and gave me exactly what I wanted while also steering me away from what wouldn't suite my length of hair. Super easy to make an appointment over email and you can't beat the price point at $55 . She's really friendly and easy to talk to, and she really listened to what I wanted. She gave me exactly what I asked for (slightly layered, not much off the length and trim the bangs). Her prices are very reasonable. I know I said I would save my hard-earned cash and always go back to Tony at MNKYTHMP, but, seriously, no matter how long I go in between haircuts, right now I just can't afford to go to him. I went to Aurora just for a flat iron and because this place is really close to my work. They had called me to come in early, which I was glad to do but pretty much after being on the chair for I think 10 min other people, who she thought had canceled the appointment, she then starts kind of rushing on my hair. As I sat there and watched do the front everything looked fine, but when I got home and touched under my hair it was frizzy and her job was basically very sloppy. It's not my fault that she was misinformed or disorganized especially when she charged me pretty close to what the fabulous Jeremy at John Brody Salon charges me to do my flat iron cut. Travesty! I've been going to Cheryl since I moved to San Francisco, and I have always been very happy. She knows exactly what will and won't work with my hair type, and doesn't hesitate to tell me, "no" if something won't work. I really appreciate this, because I'd rather have a cut that doesn't cause me grief every morning as I'm trying to blow-dry and zoom out the door with only minutes to spare. Cheryl only works limited days, so it's sometimes hard to find time to see her, but I have heard really great things about Jimmy, the owner of the salon, as well. He is usually the one that helps me schedule my appointments, and he's always professional and returns my calls within an hour or two (he's usually working on a client, so follows up after he's done). Parking around there really isn't that bad compared to many areas of the city, and it is right by 9th and Irving, where the N and 44 Muni lines stop (and the 43 and 6 are only a block away at 9th & Judah). Cheryl's the kind of hair stylist that you continue to go to, even after you move out of the city, because she's that good. Give her a try...but don't steal my appointment time! :) read more

I just walked by this salon and noticed that they used Aveda products, so I figured they were on the right track. I made an appointment with Paula. She is a very good stylist. After a brief consultation, I suggested that she just do what she thinks is best since she's the professional - this is a good way to determine if someone really knows how to cut your hair. I have wavy & bushy hair, and it's easy for a stylist to make it look funky. But Paula did a fantastic job. I also appreciate that she rinsed and conditioned my hair after the cut. So many stylist wash and condition your hair, then cut it, then style it and leave you to walk out the door with little bits of clipped hair falling about your shoulders. After reading all the helpful Yelp reviews and receiving a bad haircut, I decided it was time for me to suck it up, like a big kid, and go for a real haircut. Not a cheap-o $10 cut. Luckily, Jimmy was free when I stopped by - I was really excited! Jimmy has a good eye and he actually asked me about my hair care routine so he could try to cater the cut to my no-maintenance lifestyle. He fixed the mess the previous dresser had created and did exactly what I wanted even though I wasn't able to verbalize it myself! You can't hide flaws in straight Asian hair, but that doesn't matter because there are none! I think part of why Jimmy does such a great job is because he, unlike a good portion of the world, actually enjoys his job! Jimmy also gave me a good tip - try to part your hair to one side instead of straight down the middle. When it's parted straight down the center, it divides your face in half, but since none of us are perfectly symmetric, it only magnifies any imperfections. I was SO happy with my haircut, I couldn't stop smiling and feeling like a million bucks after I walked out of there! And the compliments just keep rolling in - Nice! $50 wash, dry, and cut - I wouldn't hesitate to do it again! I'll be sure to make an appointment next time because he's usually pretty booked and I was just lucky to get in when I did (he'd just finished a cut and someone else came in right when he was done with mine). read more

I discovered Eight Thirty Seven as a result of a two-pronged search effort-I wanted a convenient location, and I wanted reasonably-priced services that were also sensitive to my aesthetic needs. My wishes have been granted! The N-Judah practically lets me off at the door. Cheryl is efficient and knowledgeable. She listens carefully to what I want, makes practical suggestions, and doesn't overcharge. I never fail to get compliments on my color and cut. She also does makeup, although I have never taken advantage of that service. The ambience of the salon is very pleasant. They have flat-screen TV's conveniently located so that you can watch comfortably while you are being "done. They play music videos, rather than tedious daytime TV fare - very refreshing. read more

I went to Jimmy based on the reviews here on Yelp. I wanted some fun and funky color. Bad choice. My guess is Jimmy does a good job on "simple" normal highlights, etc., but he has no creative flair and really has no clue how to do innovative color. His prices were also a bit high. I gave him a 2nd try and still didn't love it, so trying someplace else next time. Lots of people go to him for haircuts and love him. Each time I leave with a happy face. I once asked Jimmy to give me the Katie Holme do and he said "NO, it won't go with your face." So my favorite stylist in the city (Tracy from Firehorse) decided to leave the country for a year, leaving me in shambles to figure out who will cut my hair from now on! After a really mediocre experience at Lotus in Pacific Heights, I decided to give Jimmy a try. He cut my hair exactly how I wanted it! I just moved to SF about 7 months ago, and my old stylist was located in Los Gatos, so I had to start looking for a new place. I work at Golden Gate Park, and frequent the Inner Sunset at lunch and after work, so when I saw Eight Thirty Seven, I checked out their review on Yelp and saw their prices were really reasonable, so I made an appointment. Got my hair cut by jimmy, who did a fabulous job in about 10 minutes, re-shaping and trimming my medium-length hair with layers. he did a great job on my bangs, and was really friendly, professional, and nice to talk to. he cut a lot of my old color and dead ends out, but maintained my length and layers, which is exactly what i wanted. my hair moves well and looks way healthier. got my hair blow-dried (blew-dried?) by cheryl, who did a great job and was also really sweet. i received a lot of compliments for the rest of the day and today. will definitely go here again, and recommend to friends. this place has the quality and service of a high-end salon downtown, but for about half (or less than half) the price. my haircut was $50. read more

Jonathan and the rest of the crew are simply awesome. Ever since I was turned on to them, I haven't gotten my hair cut anywhere else. Same goes for my wife. When it comes to my hairstylist, I am a full believer in monagamy. It's not a healthy lifestyle for one to bounce around from salon to salon just to "get by". 837 is the home of my fabulous hairstylist Jimmy Nguyen. I have been seeing him for about 6-7 years now so yes, it's a serious relationship. I love the fact that I can just walk into the salon, tell him what I am "thinking" about and he just takes care of it. I completely trust his professional opinion when it comes to hairstyles as well as product. Often times, pseudo stylists try to cut your hair like the picture in the magazine that you bring in, only for you to realize that it's not the right cut for your face. Jimmy is genuinely honest and will tell you if a particular style won't work...but better yet, he will come up with a similar alternative that is FAR more flattering thus making you feel like a superstar. Not sure how long Paula has been cutting hair, but I don't recommend going to her. When you leave the salon your hair looks great. But the next day it is a different story!!!!! She didn't properly stack my hair like I had asked her. Therefore, there were sections of my hair that were uneven. I had a very difficult time styling my hair due to her poor skills. To top it off she over processed my hair color. So I ended up with dry, damaged, and orangish hair. Who in their right mind would charge full price for a touch up?!?!? My mother happens to be a fabulous hair stylist to everyone else but me..All my life she has convinced me at times to let her cut my hair...I can show her a picture of how I want it done and she still does something to my hair that SHE thinks looks great...but I end up hating it!
