So here's the thing - I really never leave negative reviews but am feeling pretty frustrated with the experience I just had with this salon. Nothing negative to say about their services...because I never even made it to the salon! But wow - the treatment I got from their front desk was awful. Like...really terrible. I had purchased a Gilt Groupon for a color treatment and haircut. I scheduled my appointment and was really looking forward to it after reading some positive reviews of the salon. However, I had to call into today and cancel due to work. My work requires me to be on call and unfortunatly, that means there are times when I have no choice but to cancel plans and tend to my job. I called in hoping to reschedule the appointment. The woman on the phone acted like what I was doing WAS THE END OF THE WORLD. Lots of sighs on the phone and I could almost hear her eyes rolling. She then told me that I was violating their 24 hour cancellation policy. This is fair, I was. I let her know that I was sorry but there was really nothing I could do. I asked if there was a fee or something I could pay. She told me that if I rescheduled at that moment, I would avoid their cancellation policy (they void your voucher). I was on the train and didn't have my work planner with me so I asked if I could call back once I had my schedule. She gave me such attitude about this. I am used to attitude and I can handle it, but the extent of the attitude she was giving me was ridiculous. She snapped at me, telling me that if I didn't reschedule with her on the phone this instant, they would void my voucher. I told her I just couldn't schedule something without looking at my planner (because I sure as hell did not want to schedule something and have to cancel again because this conversation was brutal). She then said "fine, we'll void your voucher" and hung up on me. Well jokes on them because I had never given them my voucher number. Anyways, I got in contact with Gilt to work something out so that I can void this voucher myself and go to a salon that doesn't treat people like shit. They should really work on their customer service. What an awful experience. They lost a customer and I'll be sure to spread the word. read more

I have never felt more compelled to write a review but because of a great experience it was warranted. Not only was my hairstylist, Giselle, great but the salon gives a great vibe and has a ton of natural light that allows their stylists to do their job right. I can be picky at times and especially nervous when trying out a new place but Giselle immediately made me feel like I was at the right place. I originally came in for just a cut but upon arrival decided I wanted a touch of color too. After making sure she had enough time and wouldn't over lap with another booking, Giselle delivered! she gave me suggestions and went over color options that were hard to choose from because they were all so good. Ultimately, my highlights turned out great that had the beautiful glow and natural look that I was aiming for. Giselle's work came natural to her and definitely put my worries at ease. I will be returning and 100% recommend her to anyone who is looking for a new stylist in the city. Parking in this area was very easy to find including blocks without pay to park which is a plus ! read more

This is my first time posting a review on yelp but this one is definitely deserved. I recently visited Salon 833 for the first time and got my hair done by Giselle!! I absolutely loved her styling and the time and care she put into my hair. I have long hair and normally don't have much of an opinion about styling, so I let her add her own styling and it looked adorable!!! I Will definitely be coming back and getting my hair done by Giselle again!! The salon was also very clean and looked newly remodeled! I was expecting a higher price for the awesome experience, but pricing was very reasonable too. read more

I've read great things about Tracy at Salon 833, so I took a chance after being so afraid of letting someone touch my hair besides myself and I booked an appointment with her. I called first and we talked a bit over the phone about my hair and what I expected. As she made me feel very comfortable, I was all for it. I made it to my appointment at 7:30 (Which is the time she booked) and waited less than 30 minutes, by that time the salon was empty. Just her and the blonde headed receptionist were there. She started asking me questions and said she didn't want to go lighter on my hair color because it was damaged so badly (Which is true) I was okay with toning the light brown/blonde up and adding a few pieces of red streaks. I also told her I wanted a quick trim on my dead ends. By the time the hair processing was done, she washed and started to blow dry. The color was not what I wanted or expected. It wasn't red and my brown looked dingy. At that point I could tell she was very impatient and rushing. It was so noticeable to the point where she asked the receptionist to help her blow dry me. So there I was... 2 women with two hair dryers on my head at the same time. After Tracey finished blow drying me. She then asked in a very annoyed tone "Do you still want the trim, I mean it's not a problem, I can still do it". I said "No, that's fine". Everything was $85 (Very f'n expensive) for a job I could of done at home by myself. I felt like she didn't listen to what I wanted. She rushed and was ready to go home. She pretended to be pleasant but I could tell she wasn't in the greatest mood because she had to work on so much hair. I regret going and will never go again. I look at all of the other reviews and it amazes me of all the good comments and it sucks that I can't say the same after spending so much money. I am never one to write bad reviews on anyone but I wish I could of went to a drug store and did my hair on my own. Beware of 24 cancellation policy! When I booked my appointment there was no mention of a cancellation fee. I booked my appointment the day before my appointment. I had an emergency pop up and had to call to cancel my appointment. I was informed while canceling my appointment that I would be charge 50% of the service I had an appointment for. I tried to explain to the front desk operator that I had an emergency, but she ignored me and proceeded to ask me for my payment information. I was super excited to try this salon because it's in my neighborhood, but will never return. read more

If you want a great cut or color, you have to come in and hang out with Ashley! She has been cutting and styling my hair for years and I will never let anyone else touch my hair. Since Ashley's been cutting my hair it has never been so healthy! I have long, curly, hair, and Ashley does such a good job figuring out what's best for my hair type. She's also easy to talk to and always makes sure she knows exactly what you want during your hair enhancing experience. read more

I just got my haircut here last night. I was happy they could fit me in last minute but was ultimately disappointed. However, my stylist spent all of fifteen minutes cutting my hair. I left with unstyled hair that is uneven in the front and I have a chunk of hair missing in the back where my stylist "layered" it. I asked for a simple updated version of my current hair cut and to cut an inch off. I should also mention my stylist used freezing cold water for my shampoo and was rough with my head. She also pulled my hair when blowing it out due to a knot. I should have asked my stylist to fix my cut and be more gentle but I was totally caught off guard. The staff were friendly enough but I would never recommend this stylist to anyone! Not the quality salon experience I was expecting nor worth the money! read more

I would not recommend using a Gilt City Voucher at this place. Sounds like if you come in as a normal client, you will be fine. I am in contact with Gilt city to complain about Salon 833's service using a voucher. Terrible uneven haircut that I had to get redone immediately. read more

I've been seeing the same male hair stylist (who I love) for the last decade and only came in here because I had a gift certificate I had won. It was for a cut and deep conditioning treatment. I was lucky enough to have been booked with Becca. She is amazing and really knows what she is doing. She explained everything she was doing. She really took the time to analyze my hair and decide how to cut it. With the deep conditioning, she explained what she was doing and what the treatment actually was. She also made sure to ask if I was feeling okay or if I needed to sit up so my neck wouldn't hurt so much in the sink. She really took her time and you can tell that this is something that she loves and is passionate about. I feel like a lot of the times that women stylists get jealous and maybe won't do your hair that well. Becca is nothing like that. She complimented my hair and she gave me soooo many tips on how to style it like I wanted. The blowout after was incredible. I looked like I was about to film a hair commercial. When I walked outside, I swear every guy was checking me (or rather my hair) out. lol. I felt like a million bucks! I just might have to start cheating on my regular stylist... read more

Becca is lovely and has been styling hair for years however I am surprised at the great reviews. I made an appointment for a full highlight and cut based on the great reviews and sadly did not have the experience I anticipated. Becca seemed to be preoccupied and not very focused on my hair during the foil application as well as during the cut and styling. During the first visit, the foils were not woven very well as I had large patches of dark spots throughout my hair. In addition the foils were not lined up with my scalp properly resulting in what appeared as growth but was the result of poorly placed foils. After two weeks I had over 1/2 inch of darker hair at the roots which was not all new growth - my hair does not grow that fast. I had to inform her where I parted my hair a number of times, as well as request product for my hair. I don't believe I have received a blowout without any product in my hair, and as a result my fine hair was very flat with no volume. The hair cut was decent, but when I requested a continuation of the existing layers which are underneath, I did not expect to receive a boxy and dated top layer and face framing - I should have been very specific because I couldn't pull my hair back without hair falling in my face for 2 months and it will take me about a year to grow out the "face framing". I tried her one additional time and conveyed my concerns and disappointment, and while the highlights were a slight improvement, I don't have the patience or trust in her to "get it right" for a third or any future time. During the two hair appointments/visits, she was about 30 minutes behind schedule each time. Perhaps she was having bad days, but at the very least I expect a stylist to be attentive and to provide quality color. read more

This was my first time at Salon 833 and I LOVED it! The staff was so nice from the moment I walked in the door I felt pampered. When Becca came and got me she put my mind at ease instantly! I have had some serious new stylist "nightmares" so I was a little nervous, and honestly it turns out for no reason. Becca took her time understanding what I was looking to do for my color and cut, and explained every step of the process. The end result was beautiful, exactly what I wanted! Excellent salon! Bought a Gilt voucher for a surface balayage. Called to make an appointment the same day and they were able to get me in two days later. I arrived to my appointment 20 minutes early and they took me right away. I was politely greeted and offered a beverage or wine. Following my appointment, I wasn't entirely happy with my color as it wasn't blending well with my skin tone. I called the salon once I got home and expressed what wasn't working with my color. The receptionist was so sweet-- apologized and was able to squeeze me in the next day. I went in the next day and I couldn't be happier with my balayage! She fixed my hair with no problem at all! Lisa, the owner, rest assured me that they just wanted to make sure I was happy with my hair. Jenn, Lisa and Giselle are awesome! I will definitely be returning! read more

I've been going to Salon 833 for a couple of years now and will not stray! I am very picky about my haircut and did not find a salon I liked for years. Becca has been amazing - she truly listens to what you want, and helps you achieve your long term goal for your hair. She also is extremely knowledgeable and puts you at ease knowing that she'll do the best for your hair. Most importantly, she does cuts that I can really style at home myself. This a relatively new salon in River West , I noticed it when driving past on my way to work. I stopped in for a look and meet the owner, Lisa. She was in between clients and took the time to get to know me a little. I told her my needs and she recommended Corrine , I made an appointment . I was greeted warmly when I arrived and waited a few minutes until Corrine was ready for me. We discussed the services I needed and an hour later I was a happy customer. So when I went to check out, I had to pay for an additional "service" that I never knew about or agreed to. The owner, Lisa, was amazing and discussed products with me. I had Corinne color and cut my hair. She takes the time to listen to you and is friendly. I would recommend this salon. I grew up going to more high end salons, then took a break and started having friends do my hair. After my highlights, cut and conditioning treatment last night, I'm sold on this place! Salon 833 is amazing! I followed my stylist (Sarah - 7+ years!) to this salon and am so happy I did. My wedding was last weekend and my mom and sister(MoH) came with me to get their hair done as well. Sarah did my hair and Lisa did the styles for my mom and sister. The styles held up to the end of the reception and everything looked so beautiful. All 3 of us got many compliments. One guest even commented that I must have had my hair touched up before dinner because it looked perfect! Nope, just great styling! read more

I would never let anyone else touch my hair except the girls at Salon 833, specifically my girl Brittany Jacobs. Each time I come in for a cut/style and color, I walk out looking like a better version of myself. Britt can do anything. She's taken me blonde with balayage and highlights which were both textured, blended, and the perfect color for my skin tone (cooler tones, not brassy) and recommended products to maintain the color and health of my hair. She recently darkened my hair and created a beautiful deep chocolate. Regarding haircuts, I'm low maintenance and don't have time to do much with my hair day-to-day. Every time, Brittany consistently gives me a cut and style that perfectly frames my face and the right amount of layers to compliment my waves. She openly listens to my ideas and then offers her expert opinion as to what would work best for my hair type. What more could you want in a stylist!? I am writing this review because it has taken me years to get my hair back to a good place after a colorist fried it at another salon. I scheduled an appointment with a stylist there who last minute called in sick. I was put with another stylist who seemed knowledgeable yet I felt was more about making money than actually caring for the condition of my hair. All I wanted was a highlight retouch done and ended up being given a deep conditioning treatment on top of it without agreeing to it...I thought she was only offering it as an option. I thought since she already put it on my head I would let it go. This deep conditioning treatment has left my hair feeling like straw and matted and my scalp still hurts from the shampoo and blowdry. My hair was in decent shape prior to coming in for a retouch and blowdry, as I barely use heat on it and comb/brush it carefully. She wasn't gentle enough and a ton of my hair was in the brush even when I mentioned to go easy. Looks like my journey to healthier hair will take a lot longer now that I have a ton of broken hairs from a rough round brush and bad conditioning treatment. Left you a generous tip regardless... sorry but I won't be coming back, I am sparing the use of names here but for future reference I wouldn't treat someone's hair like it's a dollhead. read more

Corrinne did a fabulous job. I've been growing out a bad haircut for eight months now and since I completely stopped coloring my hair, the ends were saturated and crispy. I told her that I was not blessed with thick, voluminous locks since I have very fine hair that doesn't like to be messed with. I've always been hesitant to go lighter since I've never had a positive experience when I tried to do that in the past. She could tell I was nervous. The warnings didn't faze her and she seemed ready to take the challenge. I wanted some natural highlights with just a trim (even though I knew I had to cut off more than I wanted). The end result ended up being EXACTLY what I wanted. It was very pretty, low maintenance, and with tons of nice layers. Oh, and she wasn't pushy with selling products which is a huge relief. I'm so glad I found a great colorist/stylist close to me and I'll be sad when I move. My journey will be starting anew! read more
