Came into Salon Aguayo to work with Dani. My hair prior to coming in was a total mess. I had the courage to die my hair black box color. Which dried and ruined my hair completely. Dani was very patient with me and my hair. She made sure I was well taken care of. I had an appointment several weeks ago for a semi-formal event, and brought a few pictures of a hairstyle I had in mind - something simple but still unique and special for this event. No cut, no color, just a half up-do. My hairstylist (Alex) nailed it perfect, and while she was working, she consistently asked for my input, giving suggestions about what would be other options with this section of hair or that, based on my pictures, hair color/highlights, and hair consistency. They have a check-in on your first visit which takes off $10 - but for what it's worth, the full price I still think is reasonable, especially for the area. The salon itself is beautifully lit with natural light and could easily pass for a peaceful art studio. Everyone there is friendly but not overbearing, and never once did I feel that they tried to force a product on me or encourage me to buy some randomly expensive shampoo or whatnot. All that being said - I'm definitely on the easily-amused and easy to please side, however should I need a stylist in the area I will head straight to Salon Aguayo rather than even considering any other salon. read more

I've been going to Gary for five months now and I couldn't be happier. I went in for a nice burgundy balayage and ohh emm gee. It came out so great! I have a hidden undercut (I've got a LOT of hair) and he dyed that a lovely vibrant burgundy color. The rest of my hair melts beautifully from my natural color to burgundy. This is the first negative review I'm writing and I hate to do it, but the service I got calls for one unfortunately. I booked an appointment with Natalie after seeing everyone rave about her on yelp. I wanted to get my roots done and a simple trim. I've been getting my hair done at my stylist in Beverly Hills and I foolishly wanted to save myself time by going somewhere close by. Big mistake. First off, I waited 35 mins past my appointment time. Not a huge deal but seeing as how I had to check with the front desk girl and inquire as to how much longer it would be and no one checked in with me to explain the delay... kind of unprofessional. After Natalie sat me in her chair and asked me what I wanted to get done, I in turn asked her a very simple question : "Do you do the Agave smoothing treatment?" I had already asked the front desk girl this when booking my appointment over the phone, and she informed me that yes, they do in fact do it. I just wanted to confirm with Natalie if she specifically performed this service for her clients. This was our conversation verbatim: Natalie (after I ask her the initial question): "Agave... Agave.... hmm...." Me : "You know, the Agave smoothing treatment? The front desk girl told me you guys do it here." Natalie: "We do the Brazilian Blowout." Me: "But not the Agave?" Natalie: "Um.... no we do the Agave." HUH??!! Me: "I'm confused. So do you guys do it or not?" Natalie: "No, we do it. We just mostly do the Brazilian." Me: "Have YOU done the Agave for your clients?" Natalie: "Yeah." Me: "How many clients would you say you've done it on?" Natalie: "One. When they were teaching us how to do it." I should have RAN out of there. (Side note: this salon does not sell ANY Agave products, as any professional Agave salon should. Another red flag but I was way to patient that day.) After coloring my hair and blow drying it in the most amateur way possible (zero tension on the brush when I have thick, frizzy hair; entangling the brush multiple time in my hair from the sloppy way she was handling each section ) she proceeds to roll up chunks of it and pin them at the top of my head in CURLS, as this will "Give body to my hair." At this point I can already see that my roots are the incorrect color and I am beyond frustrated. Before taking the pins out of my hair to reveal the grotesque lion's mane that she's created, Natalie says, "I hope you've enjoyed your service today." Pins out. Lion's mane revealed. AUBURN roots in full exposure. I have DARK BROWN hair people. Without even getting out of my seat, I point to my head and ask her, "Do you see what I'm seeing? My roots are orange." She looks frazzled and perplexed and says, "It's probably the lighting... come over here." She gets me up and moves me away, giving me a handheld mirror. Shockingly, it wasn't the lighting. Natalie apologizes profusely, and offers to fix it the next day, not charging me for the color. But I'd be a complete moron for going back. It's obvious that she's an amateur stylist and colorist. I learned my lesson and will never let anyone besides Javier Martinez do my hair. Do yourselves a favor: if you're in the LA area, take the extra time and go to the Fernando Romero Salon in Beverly Hills. Ask for Javie... you won't regret it. read more

Finding a good hair stylist is serious work. Like any relationship, once you've found a good match, it's hard to let go. Why ruin a good thing, you know? Unfortunately, moving to LA from San Francisco meant needing to part ways with the stylist I've been going to for over 5 years, and it took me a long time to finally bite the bullet and commit to finding a new stylist in LA. Fortunately for me, my former stylist's best friend, who also worked with him at Sassoon Salon and Tailored Salon in San Francisco, recently moved to LA, so I've been able to get the same quality cut without needing to fork over an extra $150 to fly out to SF! Melissa Robles-Tolmasoff has impeccable technique and a strong attention to detail, and she was completely unfazed when it came to dealing with my curiously wavy, thick Asian hair, turning it into a sleek, sharp cut with an asymmetrical angle through my fringe and around my head. If you're looking for a cool, edgy, short haircut, Melissa can make it happen for you, and she'll do it with a smile on her face and welcoming demeanor. The salon itself is also a beautiful space, with a bright and airy vibe. She is great at understanding what kind of cut and color you want. She takes great pride in her work and does everything with an air of professionality. I have to say I was delighted to spend time at Salon Aguayo! The staff was so pleasant and nice and even offered beverages when you walk in. Marquis did my hair and I was blown away! I am SO happy I was referred to Salon Aguayo!!! I had my haircut yesterday and I can't help but to stop at every mirror in my vicinity! I LOVE my hair. My stylist was Natalie Bodaghian. Where do I start? Natalie was the sweetest, funniest, professional hair stylist I had. She was very accommodating and made sure I was comfortable every single minute of my treatment. She made sure to not tug on my hair and hurt me, like other stylists have at other salons. My hair is WILD and has a life of its' own. It's curly, it's puffy, it's frizzy...and I've got a lot of it. Natalie gave me the sleekest haircut, tamed my crazy curls, and even gave me tips on how to care for my hair to keep it in the tip-top shape she created. I would DEFINITELY recommend anybody to give Natalie a try. I was so excited to come in for my bridal hair trial. My wedding is just around the corner and I was ecstatic that I found a salon that opened early enough as my wedding is in the early afternoon. I came in and everyone was really friendly. My stylist was also really cool and laid back. Unfortunately, the result did not meet expectations. I came for my appointment at noon and the stylist finished around 1:47 PM. After 2-3 hrs of having it done, my hair looked extremely messy. Note that I had not done anything strenuous that would mess up my hair. Hair pins and strands that were originally part of the style unraveled (see picture). Perhaps this type of style isn't the stylist's strong suit, but I need to look put together on my wedding day. I messaged the owner pretty early in the afternoon and explained what happened and if we could work something out. I still haven't heard back. A lack of response regarding my unfortunate experience has pushed me to cancel my appointment. Very very disheartening considering the price I was charged and the generous tip I left. Update: a day or two after the incident described previously, the owner offered to reimburse the charges in addition to some free services and a second shot for my hair trial. Unfortunately, as I was still upset and disappointed, I declined the services, but accepted the refund. In retrospect, what bothered me the most about this experience was that it seemed like the stylist I was assigned was really struggling with the style I chose. If the stylist did not feel comfortable with the style and/or wasn't experienced in executing a specific look, they should have said so and we could have found a solution. Simple as that. In the end, I'm just glad the issue was resolved in a professional manner. read more

This long overdue review is for Janine. She is an absolute wizard when it comes to transforming hair. My journey with Janine came over a year ago. I saw her work on Instagram and reached out to book an appointment for a haircut. I have challenging hair and Janine is the only stylist I have gone to that hasn't made me feel like they regret me being in their chair. She welcomed me with open arms and full of suggestions on how we can get me to a great place with my hair. Janine knows hair and sees your entire head of hair -so that weird growth pattern in the back of your head is taken into account- that bulky spot by your temple is dealt with. This is why Janine is a wizard- everything is important and those details matter in the process. And they matter to her. With a plan in place, good product, patience, and most importantly her expertise, I can confidently say I love my hair. At 47 years old, I feel like me again -what a gift! That's the magic of being amazing at your craft. I will happily make the 45 minute drive to see Janine any day. And the cherry on top is that she is such a lovely person too!! I am a decorator....and I recognize artists when I am lucky enough to find them! Joseph is one! He understands your hair; your face, your height, your weight......he is a true artist! I have never asked him to do anything....and I get compliments on my hair 4 times a day...minimum. To begin, Gary is the man. Today Gary had me come in with 1 day notice and worked past his shift to thin out my ultra thick hair a tiny bit more. This isn't a reflection of his talent whatsoever. I think I've just been a bit self conscious lately and Gary did what was needed to help a fella out. No joke though, Gary is the real deal to me. It's taken me close to a decade to find someone like Gary. I mean, now I can spend 15-30seconds on my hair in the morning and I'm set for the day...confidence builder. Now I understand when I overhear girl chat along the lines of "id like juss TOTALLY die without my hair therapist. I won't let..like...anyone whatsoeverrrr touch my hair except for Francois." Is that sexist jerk talk? Hey, it's what I hear. Sorry. :) Dull jokes aside, everyone at Salon Aguayo is super friendly and definitely make my every visit comfortable. I've actually had the privilege of getting cuts from 4 of the other hair barber/stylists and they all made me happy. I really like Katy but Gary just has the magic fingers for my head...lots of options for lots of different people. Side thing, the space has this awesome natural lighting that is a bit moral lifting...sky lights is what I think we call them. Bottom line, Salon Aguayo has super talented employees who care about their craft. They're all very accommodating and make me comfortable.
