I've driven by this barber so many times in the last 20+ years of living in Belmont, and now that I have younger kids, we decided to check it out after someone else we knew mentioned them. What a great experience! My son liked going to a place in Foster City that closed up, and we were worried that we couldn't find one that my son would go to. He wasn't a fan of the buzzing by his ear in general. From the very first time he went to Belmont Hair Studio, he was excited to go. Both stylists (a mother-daughter combo) are super nice and very sweet to him. He has always felt comfortable and even lets them buzz the clippers by his ear. He also asks when we are going back to them. I would have never guessed that my son would come to an adult barber so soon, but they made it an effortless transition! They are very accommodating and easy to get a hold of. We made a call and they let us know which time slots would have less traffic and to come in then. They jotted our name down and we came at the appropriate time. I have also seen walk-ins come in without a problem. They serve adults and children alike. My experience with Belmont Hair Studio was from my son's visits as I cut my own hair. They are fair with their prices and will get you in and out of there in a jiffy! The haircut was really quick, but maybe too quick, as my husband wished his fade was more prominent (the transition between hair lengths could have been better). I requested a wolf-cut type haircut, which I was not sure she would be able to do due to the nature of the salon and how she usually cuts it bluntly. I asked her if it was possible, and she insisted that she could do it despite my initial doubts. The haircut ended up choppy and ugly and I had to spend more money to fix it. Although it was a reach on my part to ask for a more complex haircut, I would have appreciated it if the owner could have told me the truth that the haircut I was asking for was too difficult or complex for her, and it would have saved me some money. Her and her daughter are still both very nice people, I just wish for more transparency. read more

Mother and daughter team work quickly and effectively to cut hair, but they never make the customers feel like they are being rushed. Always a friendly place, run by a warm and friendly family. Sort of the "Cheers" of Belmont. I am always greeted by Grace, who welcomed me by name after not coming for several years because of COVID. She remembers and asks about each of my family members. Can't beat the prices of this place in the peninsula! Super friendly service, and was really quite pleased with my haircut as well as my husband's! It's by no means a fancy schmancy place which is exactly what I knew going in- I was just looking for a basic hair cut for us both at a reasonable price that was close by. I was actually pleasantly surprised at the time spent, quality and style of how my cut turned out. Was cute, stylish and you could tell was skillfully cut. Much better than other cuts I've had at Supercuts and the like. My husband's hair turned out really well too. He has pretty course thick hair that always sticks up on the back and she was able to cut it skillfully so that it laid really nicely. $16 to boot! I've been here a few times and on the visit before last, I really liked how my hair was cut, so I made a point to take a photo to show on my next visit as I'm new to the Peninsula and trying to find a new barber. On my most recent visit I showed her the photo of how she cut my hair before and said: "You did this last time, can you do the sides the same way?" She said okay. When she was done, as politely as I could, I said, "It's not quite how I wanted it." I then showed her the photo again and said, "How can I describe this [pointing to the photo] so I can get it cut this way next time?" She immediately responded with "Get a new barber." I said, "I'm sorry, I'm not trying to be rude. You cut it perfectly last time. I just want to know how I should describe this next time [motioning to the photo] so I can get it cut like this next time." Once again she immediately responded with: "Get a new barber." Nothing else. I was stunned and literally speechless. Comments: Your first reaction, as mine might be to a stranger's review is, maybe my tone was rude or insensitive. All I can tell you is I've made a living since I was a teenager in customer service from retail, to food service, and now B2B sales for 20 years, so I like to think I know how to treat people and customers. Plus, I still gave a tip even though I've never in my life had an experience like this. But let's for argument sake say that my tone was rude. There are countless responses that would have been immeasurably better than "Get a new barber." How about, "I'm sorry, it's too tough to do that every time." We showed up about seven minutes late, which ended up being a good thing because we still had to wait for our appointment. Like many other toddlers, my three year old takes time to warm up to new experiences. I booked this place because they claimed to cater towards children. So I assumed they knew how to make kids coming in for their first haircuts comfortable. When it was my daughter's turn, she refused to sit in the chair, clung to my leg and was visibly nervous. They did offer her a lollipop ("you can eat it after" they said), brought out a unicorn and tried to coax her in the chair. A little boy whose parent worked there started to chide my daughter by saying, "see this other little kid? He's getting his hair cut and not crying.") There was no attempt to try and bend down to her level and talk her through her fears. (I did my best but at 7 months pregnant, I needed help). What my daughter needed, like most toddlers, were kind and supportive words and attempts to ease her fears, not bribes. After 3-4 minutes, they said, "we have other customers waiting." I was embarrassed and my daughter was upset and I left feeling really misunderstood and shamed by a salon who claimed to cater to children. Definitely don't come here if it's your child's first haircut. Or if you need any additional help. They're just focused on getting people in and out of their chair as quickly as possible. read more

I recently moved into SF and last week realized I needed a haircut. After looking at prices, I found myself making the drive down to Belmont for a haircut with my old barbers Eric and Grace. Totally worth it. I'm not just talking about price either although that does deserve mention- only $11! As a guy, I can't really comment on the quality of the cuts because I was just my hair to be proportionately shorter, which isn't too difficult. Beyond that, they're just an awesome couple. $15 for a nice and simple haircut. Very friendly family run business with great prices. Would recommend particularly for men and children. I stopped by after work looking for a 2" trim. 5 people were ahead of me and I waited around 15-20 minutes. A guy who came after me was helped first since only one of the 3 stylists can cut women's hair. I thought it was a little odd. Eventually, I got my hair trimmed and was satisfied with the end result. I'll be back when I need a trim but will have to go elsewhere for more complex cuts. read more

I think that in my transition from St. Louis to Northern California is that you begin to see a lot of places like this, a family owned, family ran, business. With that being said, I am a typical guy. If I had the time to make my wife trim my hair line and keep it slightly okay to where I don't look stupid, I would gladly take that as opposed to going and paying for what normally is a 15-20 minute clean and cut. This place is unique, the family loves their business and yes their children are sometimes at the studio. I personally don't have kids, but hey I bet it is expensive to send them elsewhere right? The owner, is a really awesome dude. He will chat it up with you. If you don't like that, then come back after you have had some coffee. The haircut for me was really cheap I think 10.99 or 11.99 which beats any of those cost cuttery places (no offense to them either we all gotta make $$ right?). We have taken our toddler son to cut his hair here for the past 2 years. It's $11 for a kids cut and we're usually in and out within 15 mins if there's no wait. We've taken our son to other more expensive places where they have kid friendly chairs, but for whatever reason he's more comfortable with the family operated business here. You'll definitely see a line on the weekends and after work hours, but from what I've seen, the repeat patrons understand that the wait is usually short and don't mind waiting.
