I've been to this place twice now and have had Alisa cut my hair. She is the best! I've had issues with my hair in the past, stemming from numerous chemo rounds and my hair thinning out a lot. Anyway, I had some pictures of what I thought I might like, a mix of pictures of my own hair that I liked in the past, along with pics of random models/actors that had a similar hairstyle, and I showed them to Alisa. I like my hair short-ish. Parted a little to the right and swooped over to the other side. And cute small undercut underneath to take some of the weight out. Alisa nailed it! She's also so sweet and friendly and I feel like I've known her forever for some reason. She's really empathetic to the whole chemo/radiation hurting my hair issue. But she has a really good eye and good suggestions on how to style your hair. I heard she's really good with kids haircuts too, so I will be recommending my little nieces to come see her too. I felt adventurous and paid $300 for a perm. I noticed immediately after that my scalp felt stubbley in random places but I wasn't sure why. Now, six months later I still have large chunks of very short hair in random places that had been burned off during the perm and are now growing back. I have to Bobby pin multiple places everyday to keep them from sticking up. When I called to tell them about it, instead of offering to try to fix it or offer a partial refund, they wanted me to pay $75 more for a cut to try to "blend it." The chunks are so much shorter than my hair that there is no way this could be blended. I'll just have to wait two years for it to grow out to my normal hair length. I 100% regret my decision to come here and won't be going back. read more

I tried Bravado a few weeks ago when I couldn't find another salon on Capitol hill that was either open, had openings for a walk-in or didn't charge a lot, as in north of $35 for a man's haircut. I arrived wearing a mask, and was greeted by Marta also wearing a mask. She used an instant-read thermometer to make sure I didn't have a fever, and I was happy to use hand sanitizer. She wore rubber gloves and of course a mask while cutting my hair, and most important of all, she followed my request for a trim, not a full hair cut, and I was really pleased with the results. I've always gone to H St. Hair in the past, but Bravado gave me exactly what I was asking for. And to my enormous surprise, my hair looked satisfactory the day after the cut! Usually it seems like "the day of" it looks great, the next day, "oh man, I wonder if I made a mistake?" but not with Bravado, I'm happy to say! read more

My experience at Bravado just trying to get a decent blowout was very disappointing - less pampering, and more manhandling. I had a cold quick shampoo in a sink with a lot of someone else's hair. The stylist yanked and tugged awkwardly at my hair, which became a tangled mess because she used a total of 5 brushes simultaneously, and then the brushes wouldn't come out of my hair... The sound and pain of hair ripping was unbelievable - even the girls waiting on the couch were staring. Poked in the eyes a few times, hit in the face with the brush handle leaving a light bruise, and finally, the stylist's fingernail scraped my forehead that left a burning cut on my forehead (just before attending a wedding). The resulting hairdo was dry looking, frizzy, and misshapen - pretty bad. Although I saw a display of nice Moroccan oil products, only a bit of volumizer and hairspray were used, leaving my parched strands looking scarecrow-esque. Quality of service is just not there. read more

Nice looking salon, in the eastern market neighborhood. Flexible scheduling, but I was deeply disappointed when the Louban did not put on gloves before waxing me, then double dipping the bamboo stick, and ripped skin off of my privates. When I saw blood, she just said "what it's your own blood". Then after seeing her double dip the bamboo stick I told her that I that was unsanitary and I am not comfortable with her doing that. She got almost everything, but there were a few hairs that didn't come out with the wax, she did not tweeze them out either. (Kinda glad she didn't it was already a painful experience and I couldn't take anymore). There was no pressing, and when I winced she chuckled. I was very nice, smiled through the ordeal, and even left a small tip, but left disappointed that this salon didn't have higher standards than an average corner nail salon. read more

I took my sons (3 yr old & 5 yr old) there a few weeks ago for hair cut. The space was so filthy, hair all over the tables, chairs, and toys. I should have walked out then, but one of parents from listserv had recommended this place, so I thought I gave it a try. As soon as the boys sat down, it became so obvious that the older lady who cut their hair wasn't comfortable doing it. I asked her to wet their hair a bit so hair wouldn't get all over the place, she said yes but didn't do anything about it. Then she repeatedly telling them 'don't move, or you will have holes in your head'. Never again. read more

The adorable resident shi tzu (with a beautiful coat, of course) is super sweet and greets everyone who comes in. I'm part of Marsha Stein's fan club. She gives consistently great, quick cuts. The first time I went to her (before she was at Bravado) she cut my hair DRY and I was terrified it would look awful, but Marsha knows what she's doing. Whether she cuts it wet or dry, it always looks good. I trusted her enough to cut full bangs for me over a year ago and I've never looked back. She'll chat you up if you want, or leave you alone if you're not in the mood. Her cuts are consistent with other going rates (not cheap, but hers are actually worth the price). read more

One word: Loubna. This whole review is about a whole leg wax, a brazilian, and an attempted armpit wax. Let me tell you, I had had one brazilian wax before coming to Loubna, and I was seriously petrified of the experience. Well, Loubna and I made fast friends. She's actually really sweet and really cool, and seemed to open up to me. We kinda bonded, man. And when it came time for me to...disrobe...under the...strong overhanging light...I almost didn't even feel uncomfortable. I don't know if it's worse to know the person who's giving your brazilian or not...anyways. I digress. She had this technique of pressing on the area, post wax, so as to minimize blood flow to it and thus bruising. And whenever I would wince, she would say "no no it's done, don't worry, no more pain..." ha! it was so cute. She's convinced me to go every month or so for a Brazilian because she says it eventually will really lessen the amount of hair that grows. I mean, if that's not a sign of her amazing Brazilian talents, I don't know what else would be. Oh and by the way, she attempted to wax my armpits and it didn't work. She only got about half of the hair, because apparently it wasn't long enough. And in a great feat of generosity, she didn't charge me for the attempt. Very nice. This review is about Lamiaa - who is fantastic! I've gone to Bravado for three years now to get my hair done (cut, colored, highlighted, and styled). The whole staff is fantastic (Kay, Lamiaa, Loubna), though I have been seeing Lamiaa almost exclusively and am very, very happy with her. Lamiaa is meticulous about getting your cut and/or color just as you want it. Bring ideas in, or just discuss options when you arrive. I have gotten many highlights, lowlights, colors and cuts and have always been very pleased. She spends the time to get it right! She is very friendly and easy to get on with. In fact, my whole family uses her. She gives a great men's cut (not too short, but well tailored!) and, with children of her own, is wonderful with kids too! I've also had Lamiaa wax my eyebrows, style my hair for a wedding, and do my makeup, all of which were flawless. And, in addition, the salon is great about 'walk ins' or fitting you in the day you call if you happen to be in the neighborhood. Bravado is one block from Eastern Market metro so very convenient. Very, very happy customer. And Lamiaa is wonderful, and highly recommended! read more

I have lived in DC for nearly 6 years, and at long last, my hunt for the perfect hair salon is over. The space is cozy, lovely, modern, impeccably clean and beautifully decorated. I love the chairs too - they look and feel more like leather arm chairs than hair salon chairs. This is truly a neighborhood business, and I LOVE it. The owner, Kay, greets everyone who comes in with a warm, friendly smile and a kind word. Many of them she greets by name, asking about children, spouses, recent trips, etc. But this is no mom-and-pop operation, despite the wonderfully warm family vibe. These are skilled and talented stylists. And I am VERY picky with my hair, especially when chopping 8-10 inches off like I was that day. I've been to multiple salons and stylists across DC since moving here, and none have been good enough for me to want to go back - until Bravado. The only tiny complaint I have is that when I called to make my appointment, I specifically requested Kay (based on Yelp reviews) and was told my appointment was with her. But when I arrived, she was cutting someone else's hair and I was told Loubna would be cutting my hair instead. They asked if I'd prefer to wait for Kay, but I didn't have time to wait, and had been watching Loubna at work with her previous client and she seemed like she knew her way around a pair of scissors. Loubna was very patient with my very detailed requests, and carefully studied the photos I brought in. Once she was done, I looked at the back and said I wanted more layers put in, and she happily obliged. But when she dried it, she put it in a bunch of volumizing mousse (despite my request that she not use any product on my hair) so it was hard to tell what the cut really looked like. Also, in the front, the left side of my hair is slightly longer than the right. But it's an asymmetrical 'do from front to back, so the slight asymmetry in front actually looks ok. And I really didn't want it to get any shorter. The next day when I returned to my normal styling routine, I realized that the cut was still not quite what I had asked for. I returned to the salon first thing when they opened the next morning to ask if they would fix it. They told me that Loubna wasn't working that day and usually they like to have the same stylist do the corrections as the service is credited to that stylist. But the stylist on duty, Lamiaa, said she would be happy to fix it for me, no problem. Now that's customer service! I was really pleased that she was willing to take care of me on the spot, and she was SUPER professional about it. When I told her how much I appreciated it and that I felt bad that she had to go out of her way, she totally reassured me that I shouldn't worry about it. This is the level of professionalism and service that all salons and service business should aspire to, and I will forever sing the praises of this salon as a result. As for the cut itself: I showed her the same picture I showed Loubna and she said "oh yeah, I see what we need to do." And she got it PERFECT. I absolutely love the cut now, and have gotten TONS of compliments on it. I will definitely be going back to Lamiaa for the foreseeable future. Loubna was really nice and did a good job too, but because I'm such a perfectionist, I'll be sticking with Lamiaa from now on. I went in with pretty long blonde hair, came out with hair just above my shoulders. I was nervous about making such a big change (maybe 8 inches taken off?) and especially nervous that I'd wind up with a dated, dorky looking bob. I called Bravado today after reading good reviews. I am going out of town and needed my hair cut asap, and I had so-so experiences with my last haircuts at a salon that shall remain unnamed. My experience today was so good that I am taking time to write a review. They were able to squeeze me in and I got a wonderful cut--the best I have had in years. I always walk past this salon when I am at Eastern Market but for some reason never thought to check it out. I was able to get Kay, the owner, to do my cut. She was sweet, professional, and listened to me. I brought a magazine in to suggest the direction I wanted to go, and she nailed it. I have long, thick hair and Kay understood that I wanted some layers but I didn't end up with the Friends hair cut, which seems to always happen. I even decided to add highlights to my appointment at the last minute, and they were able to accommodate my decision and did not rush. The result looks natural, summery, and I walked out feeling great, which has not happened to me after a hair cut in a long time. The salon is small and intimate and everyone was nice. I didn't feel rushed like I normally do when I get my hair cut and it was actually a relaxing appointment. I received a 20% discount (which is mentioned on their website but I didn't have time to print out the coupon) for being a new customer. I highly recommend visiting Kay. This will be my new salon. The woman that washed my hair and did the blow out was great and encouraging, too, but I do not recall her name! Great salon, great atmosphere. I've been coming to Kay for about a year, at the recommendation of a friend, and I have always enjoyed my time at the salon and the results. The place is stylish and upscale without feeling pretentious. I regularly do single-process color and blowout with any of the ladies, a haircut with Kay, and sometimes eyebrows with Loubna, too. One of my favorite things about this salon is their flexibility. Got a date tomorrow night and your roots are showing? Call Kay! She'll fit you in and get you colored, blown-out and feeling like a million bucks. Usually with salons at this level, I've had to wait weeks for an appointment. Marsha and Consuela are great new additions to the team. I've only had a blowout from Marsha so far, but I'm optimistic that her cuts are just as good. Latifa has moved!!! What an amazing woman and hair stylist. I started getting my hair cut by her when I was just a small child and she was at Bubbles on Capitol Hill. As the years went by I dabbled in other salons from Philadelphia where I went to college to even spending $600 for a haircut/color in Georgetown-- NEVER with the same result I got from seeing my dear Latifa. She has been highlighting my hair PERFECTLY since I was about 12 years old. I can only say that she is the best of the best in what she does and willing to do whatever it takes so that you walk out happy. Tara has saved me from myself more times than I care to count. When I leave here I feel like I've just spent an hour with my girlfriend. I've got really thick straight hair and always ask my stylists for their opinions on what to do. Tara, unlike any other stylist I've gone to in DC, really listens to my needs, wants, and hair-dreams, then tells me the pluses and minuses of different looks. She helps me figure out how to style any cut in a way that works for my lifestyle (a lifestyle that involves hitting snooze till the last possible moment) and how to make it cooler if I'm going out for the night. I second Kimberly's review. Tara is a great person, and the best stylist I've ever had. I, too, have problem hair and want to look fabulous with minimal effort (Yay snooze button!) Tara is the only person who's ever really listened to me, and basically said "You'll never get that look with this hair, sorry" and suggested something else. She also asked questions as she cut so she could figure out whether I wanted something more classic, more edgy, ect. Tara specializes in short, chic cuts, so if you're going for something dramatic absolutely go to her. And the last time I went, she styled my hair twice. As in, she dried and styled it one way, and then said "wait a minute, you could also do this really cool and edgy if you do this..." and took the time to do it again. My only advice is regarding hair color--if you go dark and have fair skin, I'd go the day Before you have somewhere important to be. I had my hair and eyebrows done, and had to do a fair amount of scrubbing to get the stains off my skin. read more

I came here last minute for a blow out before our rehearsal dinner when I realized the salon I made my original appointment at was too far. The girls here were so welcoming and warm. The blow out was AMAZING and my hair was perfect even wen I woke up the next morning! I forget the name of the girl who did it but she listened completely when I asked her to wash my hair multiple times and use minimal conditioner (so my hair would better hold an updo the next day). Definitely will go back next time I'm in DC! read more
