Tried to request a hair cut at this place not once, not twice, but three. times. The first time I walked in in person to inquire about setting up an appointment . Instead of booking me on the spot, I was handed a card and told someone would call me, but if they don't, call them. No one called me back. Called them on another day to ask if they had any openings possibly "today or this week", was told someone would call me back. No one did by noon, so I called them. I was told over the phone that they were "so busy", the receptionist hadn't even asked any stylists about their schedules yet. ... so I went to The Sustainery, a few doors down. Sorry Salon Kai, but my $ went elsewhere. The Sustainery was professional when answering the phone (apparently Salon Kai doesn't know that you shouldn't answer a business line with just a blasé "...hello?"), the Sustainery booked me the same day even tho they only had one appointment slot left, and they had a beautiful clean salon with Kevin Murphy and Davines, hot tea, and outperformed Salon Kai's horrific customer service by a landslide. I passed Salon Kai on my way to the Sustainery; and they had empty stations-- it's not even like they were so damn busy every chair was filled! Will I ever waste my time with Salon Kai again? Nope. If booking clients isn't your priority, Salon Kai, why are you even running a business tho? read more

I've been on a never-ending search for a hair stylist and hair salon that I absolutely love coming back to, and I am happy to report that my search is finally over! I had a great first-time experience with Niki. She's very friendly, personable, and gentle with my hair (no excessive pulling!). The salon itself is very tastefully decorated and doesn't have that chemical smell that you will find at other salons. According to Niki, the girls who work here have been working together for years, and the clients they have are regulars from the days when they were all working for Hairscapes on the first floor of Manoa Marketplace, so you really get that warm and fuzzy feeling because everyone knows each other. My haircut (incl shampoo, conditioner, and blow dry) came out to $52.35 (incl tax) and I couldn't be happier. I'll definitely be returning to Salon Kai for future haircuts! I don't usually write reviews but since my experience was AMAZING and they don't have any recent reviews, I decided to post something. Let me just start by saying that I was extremely skeptical going to book my appointment since all I saw on Yelp were feather extensions and years-old reviews. LOL MY experience with Kelsy was THE best after having two bad haircuts in the past 4 years. I was very nervous to receive yet another messed up haircut, but Kelsy was so sweet and professional but totally chill and reassuring that I could get exactly what I wanted! Talking to her was not awkward at all, which I expected it to be since I consider myself a social introvert and don't really like starting convos and I'm terrible at thinking of things to continue to talk about. And she made my visit so comfortable as if we already knew each other for years. She cut my hair exactly how I wanted (which in my opinion is a hard thing because I can barely manage my own thick asian hair), and I was basically about to cry because she gave me my confidence back that I had lost from the first bad haircut I had years ago. I had a great experience at Salon Kai today. Rose did an amazing work on my hair. I'm super particular with how my hair is cut and she did my hair exactly the way that I wanted it. The salon is clean and the staff is so very welcoming and friendly. Because of the COVID, they will take temperature checks and hand sanitizers are provided for you before you take a seat. Let me tell you... I LOOOVEEEEE this salon!!!! It's so clean, cozy, and the staff is so friendly!!! I'm suuuuuper picky with who I let touch my hair. I go to see Niki. She's VERY patient with me. And I say this because I am always changing my hair. I had dyed my hair purple using the dreaded box color. I kept it purple for a while. Then one day I decided I wanted to go back blonde. Keep in mind, I'm Asian and have dark as heck hair. She somehow managed to pull out that purple from my hair and make it the ashy blonde color I wanted. I don't know HOW she did it, BUT SHE DID!!! And it looked amazing. Purple is not an easy color to get out of your hair to make it blonde again. She is a wonderful conversationalist and I HIGHLY recommend her and this salon. I suggest you book in advance because Niki is well sought out because of her talent. She not only is good at coloring/highlighting hair, but she cuts my unruly mane beautifully. I mean, To the point where I don't even need to worry about styling my own hair after I leave the salon the next day!! I'm very low maintenance when it comes to styling my hair. I love the pretty color, but I hate actually styling my hair. But when Niki cuts it, my hair manages to stay so nice afterwards. I recommend. HALLELUJAH!! I met Nikki today for the first time and she used her magic to fix my horribly awful haircut that I just got two days ago at another salon. I won't get into the details of that story but instead focus on the awesome skills of Ms. Nikki. We talked for a bit before diving in because I was a little nervous; meanwhile Nikki combed through my hair, grabbing sections and said a disappointing, "ohhhhhh...." more than once as she held it up for me to see the random long strands and chaos. I already knew it was obviously bad, but having someone show me just gave me confirmation. But Nikki was professional and didn't bash anyone, but instead she sincerely said, "I'm sorry this happened to you." Then she got busy and worked her magic. No, really. It as magic! I didn't want to go super short (as in chin length) to fix the cut so we worked around it so I could keep my shoulder length. We also have a new game plan in mind as this whole mess grows out. We chatted about books, life, and just had a pleasant appointment. I walked out with a completely different feeling knowing my haircut was 100% better than when I walked in! The moral of the story? One of the things I love doing is finding a new salon and getting a hair cut. I found SK on Yelp. This warm and inviting salon had quite a number of happy reviewers, so I thought I'd give them a shot. In the morning, I called to make a same day appointment, and the woman who answered said she'd call back, but didn't. I then called later in the afternoon and was able to get in the next day. My hair was getting on my nerves, but one more day wouldn't hurt. It's a little tricky finding SK if you are not familiar with the area. I knew the shopping center it was in, so just finding it was the challenge. It was raining pretty heavy, and of course, it was in the last area I walked through. The girl who greeted me was very nice, and as I sat there waiting, I was able to get a feel for the place. Great creative energy! My appointment was with Jenny. I'm not sure if my request was a little weird. When I do this, I tell the stylist that he/she can cut my hair anyway they want, but that it has to be short and somewhat conservative, but something I can make hip and funky on the weekends. But she cut my hair so that I could spike it up on the top. I also liked the shampoo after the cut to get rid of all the small loose hairs. We had a nice conversation about my visit here to surprise my parents. I was also able to see the fun camaraderie between the other stylists. I really liked the vibe of Salon Kai. My friends and family liked my new look, and some even said I looked like I lost weight (I love when that happens! Thanks Jenny!). My hair is at a complicated stage of growing out after 10 years of dying. The old faded away dye not only looked awful but also felt damaged. I felt really depressed about it and was ready to cut half of the length off. Jayna helped me to get some perspective how bad things are and how much realistically needs to be cut. I also have trust issues when it comes to layers. I don't have that much hair and it likes to go flat - if you cut half of it for the sake of layers, I look exactly like someone missing half of their hair. I voiced my concern about that and agreed to long layers hoping the good reviews over here weren't lying. It's been a week since, I wanted to see how the hair behaves when I follow my routines. I am amazed. The haircut is very flattering (and I don't spend more than 3 minutes on my hair in the morning). The most damaged parts are gone, I didn't have to sacrifice that much of the length, my hair feels so light and healthy. After months of hiding with a pony tail I finally feel like showing off my hair. Long layers made the haircut look more chic but didn't take away from the volume. Jayna is definitely the 1 in 10 hairdressers that knows how to make layers that look good on me. My next haircut will be from Jayna too. Based on the stellar reviews, I decided to give this place a try. I don't have a regular hair stylist since I haven't really found one that I really like. So I got to the salon, and I thought that it was pretty cute. The stylist washed my hair, and we talked briefly about what I wanted. She made a few cuts and then she proceeded to blow dry and straighten my hair. I started to feel a little disappointed about this place because I thought my hair looked almost the same as when I arrived...I was like...is this it? But then she started to cut the layers, and let me tell you, she took the greatest care in cutting the layers in my hair. It took a while since I have so much hair, but she was very meticulous, and the end result was the best haircut I've had since I got here. AND this great cut only cost around $45.00! I think that is very reasonable compared to other salons, which charge around $70 for haircuts that don't even make you happy. The reviews don't lie! I LOVE THIS PLACE! Well, I love the girl who cut my hair - JEN! In my 20 years on this earth (which I know is not much...but just saying), I have never ever been completely, 100% satisfied and even ecstatic about my hair cut - and its price! I have very thick hair - VERY. I have had stylists tell me it was impossible to cut my hair a certain way that I had wanted because of this. But with Jen, it was possible!!! She did wonders with my hair. She cut it so beautifully. She thinned it out which makes my poor head feel so much better these days. I asked for a lot of layers and to still keep as much length as possible. She did the job! I also wanted to try bangs again, for the first time since my 1st grade days. I got the blunt, straight-across bangs that fall right at/under the eyebrows, and she nailed it!!! I love my new bangs :) She also gives free bang trims...WALK-IN free bang trims. Can I get an amen! I am still so stoked about my hair cut. I am ONLY going back to Jen, from now until forever! She is awesome. She has been cutting hair for 9 years and she is great at it! Super cool, nice to talk to, and oh I can't leave out the nice head massage during the shampoo! If you want a stylist who actually knows what she is doing - I recommend Jen. I haven't tried the other stylists at Salon Kai, but I am sure they are awesome too! This review is mostly for Jen, though, who now has my heart in the world of hair-styling. She is amazing and from now on, my go-to girl every 3-6 months if budget permits :) I asked for layers down to the bra-line, and asked if she could make my hair look as voluminous as possible. Sandi has opened her own salon back in Manoa. Let me tell you, it's a lot better driving to Manoa again rather than having to go all the way to Restaurant Row. Her salon is really cute (especially the stations) which are very Shabby Chic. She uses high quality products and I can tell! My most recent color was perfect!! It was exactly the color I wanted (which was blonder than usual) and my hair didn't fall out! Yipeee! Here's my review about Sandi when she had a chair at Hairscapes. **I have been seeing Sandi since I was a little girl and she has cut my hair really short and has trimmed it while keeping it long. Sandi really listens to what you want. I have really long hair and she doesn't go cut happy to express her artistic views like most hairstylists would and I love that. She has also been coloring my hair for about 8 years and we have gone from dark brown to blonde and my hair hasn't fallen out! But, her highlights are amazing! amazing! She uses a ton of foils and sometimes puts in low lights too. They always look great and I always get compliments on them! ...and for a great price!** Thus, having her own salon means she's even better!! Her prices are reasonable and I swear by her highlights. I LOVE Salon Kai. I've tried other salons around Honolulu, but no place gets me like this salon. I usually go into this salon kind-of knowing what I want, but they always take it a step further and make my hair so much more beautiful than I anticipated. My first experience with coloring my hair was with Caroline last year and she gave me an awesome ombre! She chose the perfect color for me; not too blonde, but light enough to be noticed and that is exactly what I wanted. I went in for a cut and Niki gave me the volume I desperately needed.. There was none of this "Im gonna do this, this, and this to your layers! Itll look great!!" or "Yeah, its supposed to look like this" stuff I faced before. CAROLINE FTW! She is awesome. I've seen her twice already for my highlights and she always recommends only the very best. I have dark hair and I originally wanted to go really light. She understood where I was coming from but only recommended the healthiest way to go which was to take it in steps and to do it using highlights to achieve a lighter look without having to color all my hair blonde. I loved the outcome both times I went! As for the price, I think it's super reasonable considering my hair length and the two colors of highlights she used. She's also really easy to talk to. I've never really had a regular hair stylist and I'm glad that I found my way to Caroline because I know I'm in good hands now. I go here because my stylist, Rose, is here now. And even if she went to work some where really far from me, I would still find some way to see her. Yes, I'm loyal to her. I first met Rose at Mane Attraction, which was in Manoa Marketplace on the second floor. Then it got consolidated with Hairscapes on the bottom floor of Manoa Marketplace. Then Hairscapes moved to Restaurant Row. I went there, too. I prefer going to Manoa Marketplace than Restaurant Row. So I sure am glad that she is back in Manoa. I just want to go where Rose is. But that's not to say that I haven't cheated on her, because I have. And each time I cheated on her, I thought, how can I be doing this to Rose? She always makes my hair so beautiful! And each time I return to her, she forgives me and makes my hair so pretty and exactly what I want. The salon itself is pretty minimalistic. It keeps things neat looking. The pale walls and the pale colored stations give the salon a very modern feel. There isn't much waiting area, but I've never seen people waiting for long. They could add a comfy couch, but I can only imagine how difficult it would be to clean up the hair off of it. The less furniture they have, the easier it is to keep the salon tidy. A clean space is so much nicer than a messy space! Over the years I have been seeing Rose, I have learned that showing up at the exact time is better than showing up early. It's rare that she doesn't have someone sitting in the chair before me. If I'm too early, I end up just waiting. It's better to walk around Manoa Marketplace and shop and eat than sit and wait. I try to time my visits with Rose to coincide with the farmers' markets. Gives me something to do before and after my hair appointment. And I do like that fact that Rose isn't very chatty. I like to be able to enjoy and relax when my hair is getting washed and massaged. I wish it was a 30 minute hair wash! Yes, I have been to some salons where the stylist is prodding into my life and giving me suggestions to make life better for myself. Hey, I have a therapist, thank you very much! I pay my therapist to listen to me whine and my stylist to do my hair. I don't need a therapist-stylist. Concentrate on the task at hand! Don't get me wrong, I do talk to Rose, but we don't go into the deeper meaning of life, just the usual small talk; weather, kids, travel, etc. They do sell some hair products, but they don't hold much back stock. So if you really liked that shampoo/conditioner/wax/hairspray, buy it right then and there. The price may be a little bit higher than other places. But I figured, if Rose took the time and effort to order and bring in the product, I might as well buy from her than spend more time and effort comparison shopping. It balances out in the end. The reason I go to Rose is that she has never failed me. She always makes my hair the way I want it, not the way she thinks I should have it. She has been the only stylist who has colored my hair to the correct shade I wanted. If I want a certain cut, she will do it. Even when I wanted a mullet (yes, I wanted a mullet) she did it. I admit I was not thinking straight when I wanted my hair that way. When working on my hair, Rose has warned me on several occasions that she doesn't recommend some of the things done to my hair, but if I insist, she will do it. That's why I pay her! What I do wish is that I would be able to replicate what she does to my hair at home. I have tried many times, but it never comes out the way Rose does it. That is what keeps me going back to her. Very sneaky, I tell you. All in all, I am very happy that Rose is back in Manoa at Salon Kai. She seems happy to be back in Manoa. A happy stylist makes me a happy customer. read more

I was in need of a trim and found Salon Kai here on Yelp. The reviews impressed me and I called immediately to schedule an appointment that day. It is great that this salon is open until 8pm. Great for those who work until 5pm and can barely get home before the sun sets. Rose was a lovely hair stylist who was able to decipher what past haircuts my hair has gone through and clearly addressed the areas that needed to be fixed and showed me exactly what she was going to do. I am always a little timid of getting my hair cut because of the fear of getting too much cut off. Rose was very sure that I still had long hair afterwards like I specified. Haircuts are $45. After tax and tip it comes out to about $55. This is the most expensive trim I have ever gotten and wish that there was a separate price for trims versus haircuts. I was in and out under an hour. Slightly faster than what it takes to cut my hair usually. Made me worry about the quality of the cut but everything was still in good condition. Maybe not as layered as usual. I would wait for a solid haircut before coming back. Too expensive for just a trim but Rose was such a sweetheart I had to give her some love here on Yelp. read more

Fast forward a year --- I took my daughter back for another hair cut. I was specific and told her I wanted 3-4 inches cut off her hair. She washed her hair then took her over to the chair. As she was cutting, I made the comment that I could not see any hair on the floor that she was cutting. After she was done, I made the comment again that I could not tell a difference where she cut. She told me I would notice more once it dried. It has dried, I have washed it and there was not 3-4 inches cut off. Maybe 1/2", maybe. What saves them to 3 stars? I was a little wary about getting my hair cut at first, especially after Caroline told me that my current highlights were too faint, that it just looked like I had been out in the sun. She suggested something more exciting like adding a second, lighter, colour for highlights as well as the shade I'm used to. I'm glad I agreed to it, because they turned out very well. I've never had highlights like this, and they're so pretty, I can't stop checking them out every time I pass a mirror! The cut was great, as well. We definitely discussed my hair and ability to style in great detail, and Caroline cut it in a way so that I could leave it alone or style it when I wanted. She even showed me how to trim my own bangs for when I go back to school, and she also showed me how to curl my hair into soft waves with a straightener. (I told her I had tried from a tutorial on YouTube but it turned out awful with corner kinks and everything!) All that she did was great. We talked about Brazilian blowouts vs amino treatments, feather extensions, etc. I learned a lot that day. Definitely money well paid. Everyone else was very friendly at the salon and one of the other girls offered me a fried poi mochi while I was waiting for the highlights to set. Yum! I never realized the importance of having a "primary stylist." A "primary physician", sure. That I could see. I mean, it's important to have someone who is primary in charge of your health, right? Who knows you in-and-out (literally), and who can point you to specialists if need be. After getting my hair cut with Wendee of Salon Kai, I realize that yes, as primary physicians are essential to your health, primary stylists are indeed important for your hair (and hair care). Wendee was pretty adept at remembering what she had done with my hair on previous visits, and she was also very, very thorough in her work (no stray hairs!!) Aside from Wendee, the staff as a whole seems very great. They are a group of stylists who seem to really enjoy interacting with their customers. read more

Jen RoCkS!! I was looking for a great, experienced stylist to desperately fix my 11 YO daughter's hob (horribly cut bob) that a well-intentioned student created. Maddie has had to wear her hair in a ponytail for the past 4 weeks because i was still searching... I decided to trust reviews on Yelp for Salon Kai. I called on Friday for a Saturday morning appointment. After the nice receptionist and i went back and forth trying to make it work for both of us, Jen called me and fit my daughter into her schedule. The salon is nice - not too flashy but comfortable. Jen came to get Maddie for her appointment right on time, which i appreciate. She not only talked to me about what i wanted but also asked my daughter what she wanted to make sure she was going to like her cut too. Jen took her time cutting Maddie's hair and did a FABULOUS job on her a-line bob. She got 2 compliments before she even got into the car! She's super chill, super skilled and super responsive. Caroline is amazing!!! I actually found this place on yelp, of course! Made my self an appointment with Caroline and heard they also had feather extentions. Caroline wasn't sure if Kanoe (the girl who does the extentions) was going to be in so she took down my name and number and texted me with in a few minutes! When I got there the salon was very cute and vintage looking. She sat me down and asked me what I wanted I wasn't really sure so I just let her do her thing. She thinned my hair out first and than washed. She started cutting and just shapped my face with a certain cut she thought would be fitting. She blow dryed it and had to thin it out again. Yes I have majorly thick hair! :( When she was finished Kanoe had to rush out so Caroline just did the extention. It came out really nice and flowed well with my new hair cut! Still going to Caroline, even after all this time! Amazed that she remembers incredible details about our conversation the last time I saw her. It's like reconnecting with an old friend every time I see her! I've gotten extensions from her-- great! She even special ordered some bright red natural red from California for me. Caroline really goes out of her way to make sure her clients are happy ^_^ And I was shocked that the extensions (about 10 of them) cost me so little! Funky colors, and free bang trims-- awesome! And her prices are always so good! The color always stays in for a long time, and the Alterna brand of hair styling products and shampoo she uses are really top quality. Definitely affordable for college students. And I can text her cell phone when I want an appointment. She always remembers what we did the last time, and makes sure that she has the colors I want in stock when I come in. She doesn't care about useless upcharging for products you don't need, she makes sure you know how to take care of your hair for a reasonable price, and she teaches you her ways so that you don't have to spend money for stuff you can cheaply do at home. Clients aren't dumb, we know when stylists are trying to sell us on stuff we don't need. She's the first stylist I've had that wasn't condescending when I told her I used box color from Sally's because I couldn't afford salon coloring. She even told me how to do it "the right way." But, her coloring is SO MUCH BETTER haha and seriously, her prices are INCREDIBLY affordable for me! Caroline is seriously the best stylist I've ever had! Sad to have to leave her to go home to Chicago in a year after my time at UHM-- maybe I'll fly to Honolulu just to have her do my hair-- HAHA one day, when I'm rich and famous! read more

Go see CAROLINE! She's been doing an excellent job with my hair for as long as I can remember. I love the fact that I can grab lunch, a cup of coffee, then get my haircut in less than an hour without sacrificing any quality. So here's my long overdue review about my many experiences at Salon Kai with Niki: She is literally the only person I trust with my hair!! This time, I cut it short. In the past, she cut and styled my hair with long, layered waves. No matter what the cut/style, it always comes out perfectly!! My hair is naturally wavy, and it can be frizzy, especially with the humidity. BUT somehow, she makes it look amazing!! Bonus: Niki is also a good and awesome person!! Make an appointment with her!! Defenitely a place to for a great cut/stylling! I've gone to Jen since she was at Hairscapes (in manoa) and I have NEVER been unhappy with a cut. From bringing a picture in of what I want, to fixing my hair from being a hair model (yikes!), Jen always does a great job. I called in Friday spur of the moment to schedule an appointment to get my hair done. When was the last time I cut my hair? Anyway, it had to be done. The hair had to go. Making an appointment was really easy. The woman who answered the phone was helpful and polite. I managed to snag an appointment for later that afternoon. Just so you know, Salon Kai is located in Manoa Marketplace - right above the bakery. So you just take the stairs at the end and it's the first shop on the left. Easy enough, and plenty of parking! I arrived at the shop and was surprised. It was larger than I had though (but still had that cozy feel to it). It was clean, and the decor was really cute. It was very fun and vibrant. Niki was actually waiting for me to come in so I was able to get started right away! (Hooray for that!) She asked what I wanted and I honestly had no idea. I just told her I wanted a bunch of it off, and asked for her suggestions (hey - last minute cut, remember?). She was more than helpful and advised against going shorter than shoulder length because of my hairtype (totally agreed). She had valuable input and we decided pretty quickly on the length and layers. She washed my hair and there was some small talk which was really nice. Not super awkward, which is always a plus. The cut itself was fast, and I was happy with it when she was done! I gave her a very generous tip which brought my total to $55 (the tip was just under 10), so the cut price is very reasonable. I'm so happy with my new hair and how light it is! Although I've only seen Niki, all the other stylists in the salon seemed very capable and did a fantastic job on the other customers in there! Salon Kai is located on the second floor of Manoa Shopping Center, right up the stairway by Long's. They're a smaller salon, but very comfortable. All the stylists are very friendly and easy to talk to, especially if you are only waiting to make an appointment. I've seen Jayna twice now, and I've been amazed both times. My first visit, I wanted to dye my hair back to its normal dark brown/black color but Jayna advised me to try a demi-permanent hair color instead. Since I used to dye my hair pretty often, she explained that it would be very difficult to lift black dye in case I wanted to change the color. The dye came out well, and with a cut and wash, it came out to around $90 without tip. My second visit, I just went for a haircut, wash and style (approximately $45 without tip). Jayna listened to my requests and cut my hair exactly as I asked. I couldn't be more pleased with both appointments and am so glad to have found a stylist as kind and talented as Jayna! read more

I've been following Kanoe around for years. She provides excellent, consistent service. I trust her with my hair and she's very experienced in color. I usually go for blonde highlights and she mixes the perfect shade. I've been to other newer salons for the distance convenience, but I'd only travel to Manoa for Kanoe's services. It's so worth the drive. Also, I like to check out the shopping center while I'm at the Manoa Marketplace. I particularly like the boutiques and Wholesale Unlimited. I will definitely be back. Did I mention she gives relaxing hair massage and I get many compliments on my feather extensions. read more
