I came in for a color correction, and the transformation was incredible. Niesha is wonderful, professional, very current with her techniques, and compassionate. I was able to trust her completely to do exactly what was needed. I got everything I asked for, and the customer service was exceptional. The environment was very professional, quiet, and clean, and they provided refreshments. I was feeling really down when I walked in, but I left feeling completely uplifted. Worst blowout I have ever gotten. I have thick hair and specifically asked for a voluminous, 90s-style blowout. The stylist seemed to understand what I wanted right away--I even showed her a photo for reference. What I left with was half-blown-out, frizzy hair. It was obvious more time and passes with the brush and dryer were needed to smooth my hair. It's either that she is not trained or she didn't want to put in the extra effort needed with thick hair. The latter seems likely because my hair was visibly frizzy when she was done. When I asked her to go over it again, she did, but it made little difference. I ended up having to redo my hair myself at home. A complete waste of both time and money. Do not come here for a blowout. I even reached out to share my feedback and never received a response. I've been a Spoke & Weal client in LA, SF, and NYC, but after this experience I will not be returning. read more

I've been seeing Liz for haircuts for a few years now - she's great and highly recommend. But I have to give Madison her flowers for the amazing service. I had a terrible experience with my former colorist, which left my typically bright ashy blonde a muddy orange color. I reached out to Madison to see what she could do and she truly is a hair color ANGEL. She did a great job walking me through what she thought we needed to do to get me back to blonde while maintaining the integrity of my hair. I am incredibly pleased with my results after just one session and so thankful for Madison and her expertise. She's professional, efficient and a master at her craft. I had my hair colored by Colleen Flaherty. A photo of the highlighting was shown to her. We discussed the highlights. Colleen did not say at any time that her process would not work for highlighting. She does what she considers a single process and highlighting all at once to my amazement. The results were beyond horrific and did not represent the photo in the least. The color was Ashy with NO highlights whatsoever. Her fee is over $500. Now I have to find a hair colorist to rectify this mess. How does someone with limited technical ability become famous. Madison is not the first colorist I've been to, but she'll probably be my last. She successfully transitioned my hair to grey, dealing with a botched attempt to blend my lengths with my grey roots that was no small challenge and other colorists telling me there was no option but to wait it out with two-tone hair (not that there's anything wrong with that). If you want someone who will listen, guide you, and blow you away with the results, no matter that is for you, go see her. Terrible experience. Rude staff. Walked out with wet hair, dissatisfied. Here's what happened: I went to this place as a hair model for highlights. Now, as a hair model you are in the hands of a student/apprentice with an instructor (senior colorist) overseeing it, you are liable to pay only the product fee with a potential exposure to risk. The hair gloss was good, she gave me the exact color I wanted but the fundamental bleach work had gone wrong. The hair wasn't lifted enough which left me with orange tones all over. They tried to fix that by adding more gloss (even I was aware that trying hard on gloss cannot fix a bad bleach work). I raised my opinion to the student that this wasn't what I expected and that my hair looks hideous. She then called her instructor. The instructor and someone I am assuming is the manager came in and told me that I am a model and that they cannot spare time to do more highlights/bleach, only thing they could do is fix it with gloss (that would be the 4th gloss lol), either I can sign up for that or walk out. I told them I can pay a couple more dollars to get it fixed not wanting to walk out with that hair. They said no and critized me for raising my opinion by saying that my hair looked hideous. Now, as a student customer satisfaction and learning how to correct a mistake is also part of the process, guess they didn't want to do that. They were very rude to me after I told them that I would write a google review for that bad attitude. They said if you're "threatening" us like that just walk out with your wet hair and don't pay us anything. So I walked out with my wet hair, never looking back to this place with no talent but just rude attitude. Fundamental mistake in principles and work ethics. read more

Have been going to Madison for years and will literally never let anyone else touch my hair. Shes truly a master of her craft and you could tell she genuinely really cares about the results of her work. She resurrected my crunchy split ends from the dead, which is not an easy task as a blonde!! Her client care is always phenomenal as well, she has never been late to an appointment once and it never feels like she's rushing even though I have a lot of hair. She's incredibly kind and personable and I always look forward to chatting with her. The entire team is always so attentive, they always take my coat for me immediately and offer me a beverage, overall 10/10 experience and I would definitely recommend to anyone!! read more

I gave this salon and this "master" colorist a chance when I couldn't get in last minute with my own, even when I was told by a friend that she was hit or miss, but she completely ruined my hair. Upon arriving, Madison was running late with another client and didn't bother to check in with me to let me know she was finishing up with someone else and would be with me when she could. I was not offered water or anything while I waited, which is bare minimum standard at any salon. The vibe was honestly like they were too cool to care. My colorist had trendy nails and tattoos and accessories and I might be a bit older but it felt like I was being treated like I was just lucky to be there. Upon finally being greeted, at least 40 minutes after my appointment slot, it was hours in the chair with very little attention that resulted in a completely fried orange brassy color that that took more than one appointment with my usual colorist to correct. My hair texture is still not the same. I will never be going back and would advise you get your hair colored and cut anywhere else. Unless you like being treated like you don't belong, want to waste an entire day sitting and waiting, and feel like spending extra money and even more time fixing the service you received then by all means... hard no. read more

i moved to nyc a year ago from the sf bay area and needed to find a new stylist. i had previously gone to spoke & weal in sf and my stylist (christy hannibal) told me i had to see peter corvington. i've seen peter 3x now and have enjoyed every haircut i've gotten from him. he knows exactly what he's doing, and gives me what i ask for with a little flair. he'll also check in during his process just to see if i'm liking how things look. peter is also extremely efficient and i'm usually in and out in 45-50 mins and this includes the wash, cut and style (he'll ask if i want some waves and i always say yes since it's such a treat!). his haircuts are on the pricier side but worth it for how long they last and i always get compliments. highly recommend! read more

I am in debt to Katja for all of my coloring needs, she's unbelievably talented. Katja even styled me for my wedding day (and before that, my bridal shower and before that, my engagement shoot.....). I've been seeing her for years. She is always easy to chat with about what I'm thinking I want to do with my hair and that's tough because oftentimes I don't know what I want. However, Katja is always able to guide me and successfully achieve a look with which I'm thrilled. She is super cool, friendly, fun and knowledgeable. The salon itself is seemingly always busy but never frenetic. I'm consistently offered a cup of soothing tea or refreshing glass of water upon arrival. I love that you can book your appointment on the website, super easy and convenient. And their hair dryers rappel from the ceiling, very cool! Lastly, in addition to being talented with hair, someone in the salon clearly has a green thumb. They have massive fiddle leaf fig plants and the like placed around, decorating the salon and they are flourishing. read more

Came in to do a consultation with Becca today. They were not considerate of my time at all had me sitting there for 25 minutes. I finally asked what was going on. She had three clients booked at the same time altogether and wanted me to wait another 10 minutes. Had no respect for my time. During the consultation he listened to my concerns and when I told him I did not want too many layers (as I've been scarred by Chinese salons) and he suggested the more modern approach of creating negative space between the hair layers, which will lighten the weight of my hair and give it more movement. He styled my hair to have a few waves and taught me the trick on how I could recreate it at home. At the end of the appointment he told shared his maintenance experience and said I should come back in about 4-6 months for a trim. I was very happy with my experience and cut here that I've already recommended a few of my friends who frequent the SoHo/Chinatown area to come check him out. His usual rate is $100, which seems pricey at first but considering some girls have their haircut annually/bi-annually it is nice to treat yourself to a good hair appointment experience. read more

A bit overdue, but I had a haircut here a couple months ago and was extremely disappointed at paying so much to get the worst haircut of my life. I went from long hair to a lob and the cut was extremely uneven and poorly shaped (or, really, un-shaped). Somehow the ends of my hair stuck out to make a kind of triangular profile...see Alice from Dilbert. My hair has never looked like this. It's amazing how much a bad haircut can completely transform your hair. The stylist I saw was one of the cheaper ones at this salon and he had such great reviews on Yelp. That said, he clearly was not experienced with people with thick or Asian hair, and struggled to cut long hair into a lob. He didn't properly thin my hair out and was unable to cut a straight line. On top of this, he took nearly 2 hours to cut my hair and the receptionist came over twice to nicely ask how much longer his next scheduled customers needed to wait. While everyone was super nice here, I felt pressure to get out so that the poor person waiting for their scheduled cut could be seen. For some odd reason, my stylist insisted on styling my hair in a "textured" way (i.e. 'trendy' loose waves) and this somewhat obscured just how bad the haircut actually was. In the salon, I pointed out a little bit of the unevenness but ultimately just sucked it up and paid and left. I felt very guilty that my cut took so long and caused other customers to wait so I over-tipped 30%. My stylist was super nice after all and I didn't realize just how bad the cut was as I left in a rush. A couple days later, I was really regretting my decision to get a haircut here and at the advice of friends who were appalled at how glaringly uneven my cut was (it was not just a little uneven, we are talking small chunks of hair that were about an 1" longer or shorter, randomly at the back of my head, and an obviously diagonal cut line on the right side of my head), I went back to the salon for a "re-cut". I felt super guilty doing this, because re-cuts are free, so now I was making the stylist work double on a haircut that already took him 2x longer to finish. I am disappointed to say that while the recut did minimize some of the unevenness, I still left with unevenly cut hair that was poorly shaped. With the first cut being the worst haircut of my life, this recut was the second worst haircut of my life. At my recut, the stylist was super kind and admitted he was shocked at how bad my haircut was and said that he was going to talk to his mentor to see how he can not make mistakes like this again. I get that everyone has to learn somewhere, but I did not realize that Spoke and Weal hires such unseasoned, green stylists. I was further amazed that during my recut, which took 1.5 hours this time, the receptionist interrupted part way through to tell my stylist he was overbooked for the day and essentially needed to hurry up. The receptionist was by no means rude, but this repeated interrupting during a haircut to remind the stylist that there are other customers needing to be seen is indicative of a salon that is either overbooking or hiring novice stylists who need more time to finish up a haircut. I don't think this way of running a salon is fair to either the customer or the stylists. During my recut, I pointed out the still uneven parts of my cut. The stylist kept working at it, cutting off 1cm long pieces of hair at a time, but ultimately the unevenness was never fixed completely, and the horrible shape of my haircut stayed the same. After 1.5 hours in, I made up my mind that no matter how long the stylist had to cut my hair, it would never be a decent cut....I decided to call it for myself and told him the cut was okay and I left. I don't want to name my stylist because I don't want to mar their reputation, but I will say that I will never return to Spoke and Weal and do not believe it is a well-run salon that vets its stylists or has any sort of quality control. If you are a person with thick or Asian hair, either book a cut with an advanced stylist here or avoid this place entirely! All told, I spent $130 and more importantly spent 3 1/2 hours of my time in a chair for a big regret. Finding a decent haircut in NYC has been hard for me, but after this frustrating experience I will now be budgeting $300 per cut and go to a nicer salon that is better run and can deliver competent haircuts! read more

Bee did such a wonderful job coloring my hair! I love that they do custom color here--I had never dyed my hair before so I had no idea what service I wanted (which made it hard to book at certain places where I had to pick between single gloss, highlights, etc.)! This place is great because you just book an appointment instead of picking the particular service. I went from brunette to a darker color, and Bee did such a good job making my new color look natural! She kept the natural highlights in my hair but just incorporated them into the new tone and it's perfect! Will be going back if I want another change. read more

Karen Miller was super-rough and has the most dubious technique I've ever encountered at a hair salon: she used scissors like a blade, pulling my strands at an angle and running one side of the scissor down the strand, like she's peeling celery. WTH! I ended up with lots of short frizzy fly-aways that jut out like antenna. Not to mention it hurt like hell, because her damn scissors were not sharp so she was often just ripping out my hair trying to saw through with a dull blade. Also the whole "dry cutting" here is BS. The point of cutting when dry is the stylist sees how the hair is naturally, especially for curly hair. But Karen actually straightened my hair before cutting! What's the point? Oh yes, it's a shitty marketing ploy to save the salon money! Ah... makes sense now! Not to mention rude staff with a blazé-bored-to-death-too-cool-for-school vibe you'd expect from 14 year olds, except they are 30 years older. read more

He is able to quickly understand and execute what I want just by my horrible descriptions and no inspo pictures. The talent Jason holds is beyond description. I LOVE coming to Spoke & Weal. Friendly service, gorgeous salon and located in a great area. Not only are the aesthetics and ambiance amazing, but the hairstylist and colorists are fully prepped as well. They have tons of knowledge about hair and oh yeah--they know their shit. They know what they are doing. I've been there three times now and had my balayage done twice by colorist Jon-Michael Hall (he's amazing, go go go!). As a beauty junkie, I actually don't know much about hair. But the staffs really break it down and explain it to you. When I wanted to go from my dark hair to blonde, Jon told me he can achieve it easily but it would greatly damage my hair. He then suggests an alternative letting me know that I would see a change but it wouldn't be as dramatic as I wanted since he wants to keep my hair healthy. I sincerely really appreciate his telling me the truth and coming up with an alternative. I went ahead and followed his suggestion and it came out AMAZING. I highly suggest Spoke & Weal and I think it's totally worth it. Not only are you getting an amazing result from hairstylists and colorists, but you're also gaining knowledge and a great experience at this hair salon. I've never felt happier. p.s.- As an Asian girl, I always went to Chinese hair salons to do my hair, because I feel like only Asians will understand our type of hair. How wrong I was. Jennifer Sarchet is a straight up wizard. I first went to Jen in Los Angeles, where she took me from beautiful, sunkissed highlights to a full on red head- something I had always wanted to try but was too nervous to, until I found Jen. When the opportunity came up to make sure I had a 2 day stop in NYC, I made sure of it just in case I could get in to see her. S&W is a chic spot but it's also very comfortable and inviting. Everyone was polite and easygoing, and would stop by Jen's station to comment on how pretty the color of my hair was, because y'all let me tell you - it's gorgeous. Jen is a master. As per usual, the color is rich, natural looking, and multifaceted. I get asked multiple times a week if my hair is my natural color, and if not, where did I get it done. I also know it's going to grow our beautifully. I cannot overstate how jealous of New Yorkers I am now that you have this gem of a person and a professional of such skill. read more

The first time I went was to fix another hair cut that had gone horribly wrong. They did their best saving it, and I was recommended to wait a couple of months for it to grow out. I went back over 7 months later. I told them that I wanted no changes, no layers, didn't want to lose any length - all I wanted was a little trim because my ends were pretty dry. The girl somehow managed to do the complete opposite of what I had told her. When I went back two days later to ask for adjustments, I was told there was no availability. I asked if someone would be able to quickly look over it, just to assess whether anything could be done about it. I was told that was not possible, and nobody had time for me- not even for 5 minutes. Very disappointing customer service given the price point, I do not recommend. read more

Came here after a recommendation by a friend. All my life I've been dissatisfied with my haircuts because being Asian, I thought that only Asian salons would know how to cut my hair the best given that our texture and features can be hard to work with sometimes. I was fed up with every stylist asking me simply how many inches I wanted to cut off and went at it just based on that one question. It felt like a "one size fits all" situation. This salon is different. I had the pleasure of having Victoria work on my hair. Before washing and cutting, she sat down and did a consultation with me. I told her I have a short forehead and very long layered fine hair that falls very flat with no volume and movement. She actually touched my hair and felt the problem areas out and explained to me her vision and how she was going to execute it before starting. First, they give you a black t-shirt to change into so you don't ruin your own outfit. Then they offer you tea/water. The experience starts with a scalp massage. Then they lead you to the back to wash your hair. Next they blow dry it straight before cutting. I really enjoyed the dry-cut method because you can actually see what it looks like as they are cutting and what needs to be fixed as you go. She also expertly layered my hair internally to give it that volume and movement. Lastly, she gave me some nice waves to finish it off. Worth the $75. Overall, it seems like Victoria and all the other staff here are very professional, skilled and efficient. Was in and out in 50 minutes. Will definitely return in the future :) read more

Ever tell people, "I'll be coming back," but know it is a lie? I know I had. For Spoke & Weal, I am definitely coming back... granted not every time I need trim for it is a bit pricey. But the price tag is well worth its money. If anyone knows me, they know I take my hair pretty seriously and that is because my hair is short. I'll be okay going to a cheaper salon if my hair is long... cause that you can f--- up and get it fixed. With my short hair, I cannot take that risk. My stylist, Victoria was super friendly and knowledgeable. I came in not knowing what I want and asked her to just go with the flow. She heard the hesitation in my voice and decided to shape up my style instead. My previous stylist (in my other review) was clearly not as good as I KNEW she was... even Victoria noticed. However, like Victoria said, every stylist is different. In addition to the rad haircut, the salon is super cool! Hairdryers are hung on the ceiling, tea/water is served in real cups (rather than plastic), interior design is chic and classy, and the place is amazingly clean. read more

The pricing plan doesn't allow for partial or 1/2 highlights, which might be sufficient and keep the prices down. She suggested another (junior) colorist for $300-350, who did a terrible job on my highlights, with missed areas in the front. They offered an appointment to fix it, but it wasn't much better. They assigned me an educator, and the results were average at best. It's a no frills salon too, and it should be nicer for the prices. I don't begrudge the colorists getting raises, but the prices are high, and there should be some allowance for a long-time loyal customer. read more

Finally found my go to hair salon!! Got a hair cut and color and I love love love this place. The staff is so friendly and if you are getting color, they give you a tshirt to change into! This salon is known to dry cut your hair which completely makes sense! Able to cut and and actually see how the hair will look rather than waiting till it is dry and then adjusting more. Most hair salons that I've been to would ask 0-2 questions on what you want done and most times i walk out unhappy. My colorist was Madison and I am so so happy with the end result! She took the time to ask questions and give me recommendations. Originally I wanted a lighter color, but she advised that since it is summer, she would go for a slightly darker and let the sun lighten the hair. I'm so glad i listened because the end result is beautiful! As my bleach was setting in, I was listening to how the other stylists were conversing with the clients and all them took the time to consult before doing anything and would consult more during the process. You could see they truly cared about the clients and the end result. Will definitely be coming back here! read more
