I rarely write reviews but as soon as I left Aaron Emanuel, I knew I would. I'm a senior guy that decided to give up the corporate look about 2 years ago, and I have been letting my hair grow. I wasn't crazy about another salon that I tried about 4 months ago, and pass by this one regularly. I'm thrilled that I made an appointment. It is a great group of people and the stylist, Matilda, is incredible. She listened to what I was thinking, she is super fun, and most importantly, she gave me the best haircut I've ever had (I'm 65). Coming to this salon is a mistake I regret terribly...I am baffled by the positive reviews on this page. Do yourself a favor and DO NOT COLOR YOUR HAIR HERE. I hope this review saves someone the grief that I now experience due to my botched hair. I first went to the 77th st location for a balayage. My goal was to subtly accentuate my curls with hints of caramel after dedicating 6 whole months to getting my natural hair back.  The result was too much bleach in patchy strips. I was grateful that they agreed to fix it - that's when things got worse. The owner Aaron Emanuel worked on my hair himself, spent the time to consult with me and then basically did whatever he wanted. He insisted that a wash of toner was the way to go. First of, the toner did not correct the patchy application of color from the first time. So Aaron decided I needed another wash. I landed up with global color that was several shades darker than my natural color and NO visible highlights. Aaron's response to that was to gaslight me saying A) the highlights ARE visible (I've asked at least a dozen people and no one but Aaron can see these invisible highlights) B) that my new color matches my natural hair color (fascinating how Aaron seems to know my hair color better than me.)     I also chose to do a keratin-like procedure called Magic Sleek  because my hair was so ruined from the bleach. Aaron misguided me on the treatment by telling me it is just like Keratin. It is NOT. Keratin gives hair a natural smoothing and it still has waves. The treatment he recommended has made my hair poker straight falling flat with jarring ends. It does not wash out like Keratin so I'm stuck with this now. Mind you, my goal was to enhance my natural curls, which are now completely gone. I also want to point out that I had a 25% off voucher for my next salon visit which they did not honor for the Magic Sleek, so I paid full price bringing the total cost of Aaron Emanuel and associates ruining my hair to a prohibitive amount. Lord knows how much I need to pay to fix this now. My best bet at this point is to completely chop off the monstrosity that they have endowed upon my face. I am truly heartbroken. read more

I usually go to drybar but wanted to try out other places as DryBar keeps upping their costs, and found that other places have more reasonable prices and quality of service. I called (can also book online) and was told that it was $45 for a shampoo blowdry style, very reasonable in the area. I was able to make a same day appointment and was promptly helped. There was someone to shampoo (great one at that) and the stylist took over, did exactly what I wanted and in 30 min. I have long hair so that was fast! Wonderful job and I will definitely come back. Not a bad place at all, they do a fairly decent job and have talented staff however they lack that extra something in terms of their service and customer satisfaction. It won't hurt to greet customers with a smile, perhaps offer a glass of water or coffee. You go to a salon not only for the services they offer but also for an overall experience. My favorite hair salon in the city! The hair stylist Lewnidas is very professional and excellent in what he does. I've got the keratin treatment, hair cut, and blew dry done with him. I needed to touch up my roots because I had a very not flattering ombre moment going on. Also, my hair was so yellow and copper, I was just not having it (especially on my birthday week...not that it is a big deal, but new year, new me). I found a great deal on Groupon and decided to give this place a try. As soon as I got there, they were so nice. They took my voucher number, hung my coat, and offered me a drink. Someone actually even sat with me until my hairdresser was ready. I had the pleasure of getting my hair done by Alessandro. I showed him a few pictures of what I was going for and gave me his honest opinion. I knew we were on the same page when he said "you are darker skin, this is too yellow for you and it looks like you are trying too hard to be blonde." He read my mind! He evened out my highlights, added some low lights, and put two different kinds of toner in my hair. When I saw the final look, oh my gosh! I have never been happy with my hair. I am still gloating over it. I had my hair highlighted four times before Alessandro. Once in Dallas, once in Boston, and twice in New York. My one New York session cost me $500 and I wasn't all that happy with the blowout after the highlights. I have a side sweep bang moment happening and NO hair salon is able to shape it the right way until Alessandro. I honestly have been looking for a hairdresser that I can go to consistently, but have been having a hard time until yesterday. I will definitely be going back! Review UPDATE!!!!! If I could give the customer service and color correction team 10 stars, I would!! As soon as I posted my review about my unhappiness with my original experience, a manager reached out to me and asked what they could do to fix it. This goes a LONG way with me as it shows how much pride they take in their business and making sure their customers are happy! When I went in that same day, the owner even came over to me to apologize and explain. Very kind. Taylor did my color correction and he was so thorough in examining what had happened and explaining how he was going to take care of it I am exceedingly I impressed by what he was able to do to salvage my balayage. It's because of his great technique and the professionalism of the management that I will actually be back to this salon in the future!! _________________________________________ Original: I am INCREDIBLY disappointed in the technique used for my "balayage." I have been growing my hair out for the past few years. Over the few years I thought about chopping it or coloring it. But last year stopped me from doing anything to my hair since I was on bridesmaid and maid of honor duties, and I wanted to leave it as is for the pros to style my hair for the two weddings. Well, it's a new year & I'm off wedding duties! I have been wanting to get a balayage for a while, so I browsed through the trusty Yelp and read a lot of reviews to find "the one" salon. I landed on this salon, found a voucher online, and booked an appointment right away. The voucher was for a full head balayage & blowout. The receptionist was so kind to squeeze me in for a balayage for that evening I called on a Friday and accepted the voucher for the session. The closest train station would be the 4&6 or Q line. Once I arrived, I met my beautiful hair stylist, Kumru. She took such great care from beginning to the end (about 2.5hr long). I was offered a drink before we started - I got green tea and was offered a refill throughout the session. I felt that Kumru took the time to make sure I was comfortable, so comfortable I fell asleep half way through or almost the entire session. She also spent the time to style & curl my hair at the end. The only uncomfortable part was when I was getting my hair washed and combing my tangled hair could have been a little more gentle. We took some before pictures, but I did not have any on my phone to post here for before & after looks :( However, the outcome is gorgeous and I love how it looks - a warm natural chestnut brown. My stylist was really sweet, but after two tries and one re-toning it's still nothing like what I asked for. I've been looking forward to getting my hair done for months, and have been crying since. I think it honestly looks dreadful on me, and it's frustrating that I was so clear about the color and style that I wanted. I would have asked to fix it again when I was there but he had already moved onto another client and I felt like an annoyance. I've been having such a hard time lately that I was clinging to this to brighten my world a little. Just a flop :( I wasn't going to post the stylists name. But I feel like he completely disregarded what I asked for and on top of that, did a terrible job. Camilo. He also wasn't the stylist I was supposed to have. He told me he could only use one color... but that's not a balayage? Alrighty! I'm so pissed. My fellow Grouponers: Contact Groupon and INSIST on a refund. If they say that you can only be issued a refund within 3 days of purchase, PERSIST. It's not the best, but I was able to get $50 in Groupon Bucks. You bet I won't be using it at any hair salons, though! Based on the reviews I've seen from you guys on here, it seems that these stylists really just don't give a crap about the hair of those using the Groupon, and on top of that, treat you badly. Now my hair, I have had horror stories with people over processing or damaging my hair so I'm always a little nervous when finding a hair stylist. Camilo transformed my hair experience! He listened to exactly what I wanted, went through the process with me, was honest and direct. I felt comfortable knowing he wasn't just doing a job he cared about my hair. I (stupidly) purchased a Groupon for a full balayage and blow dry. My semester just concluded so I finally had a moment to "treat myself". I read some reviews and found that Nora was probably the way to go. I got an appointment right away, which was a tad unnerving if I am honest, and proceeded to go on a nice walk from the UWS to the UES to get my hair done. When I arrived I was 9 minutes late due to taking one wrong turn in the park on my way across town; I apologized. Everyone minus the front desk employee (the same person that later took care of my wash and part of my dry, who was lovely) just seemed to be in a bad mood. There wasn't much interaction with the guests, mostly salon gossip. Nora wasn't really friendly at first, but seemed to try for a moment. I explained what I was looking for, which was just a touch up and a tad lighter around my face. She went to work right away just slapping color on my head. I started to get nervous and re-mentioned that I was looking for something subtle and like small highlights; she really looked irritated when I mentioned that. Look, I get it, this is what you do for a living, but I have been getting my hair done for a long time and know how my hair works and (more importantly) I know what I like. I didn't say anything else but was freaking out inside the rest of the visit. Speaking of unprofessional, when the man next to me was finishing a hair cut he blew the hair all over me and the woman he was working on. I've never seen this much unprofessionalism in a salon. Ok...back to my hair... I always, always have to get toner. I mentioned this in the first place. When my hair was washed there was no toner used, I know this, because I now have SPOTS and a few gaps of color missing. You can easily see these bleach spots on the top of my hair, and the right side so when I go to pull my hair up it will look like I cannot afford to get my hair done. When they went to blow dry my hair the woman I mentioned above (not Nora) was great, very tentative and gentle. Nora came in to help finish the dry, but kept pulling my head so hard -- SO HARD that I couldn't keep my head or neck in one place. I do not have a sensitive head; I have a ton of hair and realize this, and mentioned it when I made the appointment. On top of that, she burned my scalp. She held the heat right next to my scalp and you could see the smoke and smelled hair burning. I just can't. I tried keeping my cool. I was so happy when the torture drying was done that I just got up, went and paid the extra $25 long hair fee, and still gave a tip because I am too nice of a person. Listen. I understand that I purchased a Groupon to try...I've never done that before, and won't ever do it again. I have a hair dresser in SF that I love, but I live in NYC most of the year now and needed to find someone I could trust here. I completely failed at that. I am so sad. I can hide some of the spots but when you look up close it's quite clear they are there, especially the dots on the scalp and right side highlight. What upsets me the most is if she would have trusted that I understand my hair, she would have used toner and I wouldn't even have these issues. The whole experience was degrading, upsetting, and just all around horrific. I am starting to think some of these reviews are made up. Something has to be going on that I am missing...or, maybe they just do not work with blonde hair all that often? Who knows. What I do know is I paid for a service and did not get it, but was so sad and my head hurt (still does) so I just wanted to get out of there. I walked home quickly and even cried. I don't mean to sound like a baby, but I love my hair and work really hard to take good care of it. Look elsewhere. Edit for update: I finally got around to posting the photos I took the day after my horrific experience. I just went to a new hairdresser to fix the issues and he pointed out everything I already realized was wrong and a few others I did not notice. Another $150 later my hair looks almost back to normal. He actually showed me that Nora missed entire areas; so, not only did I deal with the random bleach spots and orange tiger color, but she neglected areas that should have been painted. Regardless, my hair is damaged from her poor work and care, so I just purchased Olaplex to see if it helps. I also contacted the BBB to report this salon and am trying to get my money back from Groupon / reported them there, too. Again, run. The reviews have to be fake from friends. This is not a good salon by any means, unless maybe you are just getting a blow-out where they hopefully don't burn your head like what happened to me. Even the new reviews popping up are horrible! Stop by a new salon and see their work with your own eyes before you go anywhere else. That's what I did with my new place and they were (are) incredible. read more

IM SO IN LOVE WITH MY HAIR!!! THANK YOU CAMILO!! I wanted to go blonde so bad but hair dressers kept insisting that I would be damaging my hair if I went as light as I wanted to in one sitting. But I simply didn't want to go in stages when I just knew it could be done, I mean I see the before and afters all the time. When Camilo told me he specializes in blondes and said we can achieve what I want with absolutely no hesitation, I felt more than happy to sit in his chair. My hair looks amazing, this color looks great on my complexion (I've had such brassy blonde jobs from other stylists before that's no good) My hair is super healthy, contrary to what other stylist have to me would be the result of going this light in one sitting. Exactly what I wanted? CHECK Hair is still amazingly healthy and full? CHECK Enough about Camilo and his talented self! The salon was absolutely beautiful, the staff is so nice and attentive, and overall it was a very relaxing and fulfilling experience all around. She was very accommodating and made sure to ask me if I was comfortable with everything she did. I showed her pictures and she suggested she wouldn't be able to change it that drastically in one session so she did something that would look natural with my thick jet black virgin hair. I asked her to make sure she didn't touch my roots which she was careful not to do. She actually seemed to enjoy working on my hair and I had a great time as well for my first time coloring my hair. This was my FIRST TIME doing balayage and I was doing it for my wedding in May. I wanted to try the salon and come back to the same person to get a touch up. So I made an appointment here with a groupon. I had black hair and wanted a golden caramel color balayage. I waited a year and a half to dye my hair perfectly for my wedding. So my hair was basically virgin except for 2 inches on the bottom (leftover from 2 years ago). His first attempt came out ashy brown and his second attempt just came out brown. It was an okay color, but it's not what I wanted. Since I was already there for 4 hours, I just didn't want to stay there anymore so I left. That night, I noticed more and more that it was way too dark and not what I showed him. I called them and they offered to fix it. Went back for a "fix" and he kept insisting that it was the caramel color I wanted. It was not and I was unhappy. He even told me he had no time for me, even though I made an appointment to get the fix. He gave me 3 options: 1. Put toner, which would darken it. 2. Redo the balayage - I would have to pay for this. 3. Wait until it naturally gets lighter from washing, then come back and pay for a new balayage. Then he changed the explanation and claimed I needed to come back multiple times to achieve the light color I wanted. Even if this was true, he never told me that before and I wouldn't know that as it was my first time. He was telling me to just make another appointment later, but I just didn't want to give them any more money because it was obvious he didn't care about my hair. He made his money and couldn't be bothered to fix anything. He gave me a 20% off coupon so I could pay to get my hair the right color next time. I just left telling them I would come back because I felt like it was my only choice. But after feeling pushed into accepting the color, I didn't even want them to touch my hair anymore. I ended up going to another salon that very same day and got the color I wanted in ONE TRY. Edit: To be honest, I felt bad that he had to do it twice and I thought that was the best he could do. He even told me he can't do lighter. The color was a beautiful color, that's why I gave a second star. But it's not what I wanted. He kept saying "it's caramel, that's what you want." So I thought ok, maybe I'm seeing it wrong and it is the right color. I tried to give him the benefit of the doubt. But after showing multiple people photographs of what I showed him, trying confirm the color... no one thought it looked the same. You guys did try to work with me by giving me an appointment the next day. But then he told me he was too busy and had to double check with the receptionist to see if I really made an appointment. Since I did have an appointment, he said he would do it, but I would have to pay full price. I didn't want to pay to fix it. Then he told me to come back and make an appointment for another time. Why? I already had the appointment. It didn't seem like he wanted to fix it. I wouldn't wrote a very different review if would've at least tried to fix it. read more

Love this salon! There always seem to be people there which I think is a good sign, even though it's on the small side. I came in after reading some good Yelp reviews. Wanted a pretty significant cut in terms of length, although nothing too drastic otherwise. I wanted to go somewhere I could easily come back to if for whatever reason I didn't like it, and location wise that worked out. They had an appointment available for me the day I called, so I went in. The salon is super bright with big windows on a side street, so not a ton of foot traffic outside but still good lighting. Justina cut my hair...she looked closely at the pictures I brought in and explained that she'd go slow in order to make sure I wanted to go as short as I said, so that I didn't end up with more off than what I wanted. She was really friendly and patient, and the fact that she was willing shorten it a few times rather than one quick chop showed me she actually cared what I thought about the outcome, as opposed to just getting customers in and out as quickly as possible. She was really gentle knowing I was going for such a big change and made me comfortable the entire way! She was friendly in terms of small talk and in explaining what she was doing with my hair. Once we were done it was a little bushier than I wanted on the ends, likely due to mainly healthier, fuller hair being left at the (new) ends as a result of cutting so much off, so she had me sit down again to thin it. I have now come in twice for trims with her and she has done the same process- moving slow to make sure what I get is what I want! I really appreciate it and will gladly keep coming back to her.
