I have two great keratin treatment experiences with Zoey already and I intend to go back every 3-4 months as long as I live in Chicago. My hair is naturally curly, coarse, and dry (Asian) hair, and I have been doing Japanese straight perms for more than 15 years. Half year ago I decided to transition into a more natural and healthy look by doing Keratin only . I just found my new hair salon! I got a shampoo, cut and style here for $35. Have literally paid that price for a Groupon at "fancier" places for the same quality cut (and in some cases worse). I didn't ask for my stylist's name unfortunately, but she made sure she understood exactly what I wanted, and delivered it! The atmosphere is very family friendly but at the same time, quiet and low key. Not a lot of chit chat which is honestly a relief. Definitely 5 stars. read more

The salon is new, owned by mom and daughter (Alma and Zoey). Today I went in for a cut and even though I'm very conservative with my hair I felt confident enough to also do coloring. I wanted something natural looking yet noticeable. Alma gave me the options and her expert recommendations helped me to not hesitate any longer. My appointment was yesterday. I wanted a trim and I said repeatedly a "trim" because I'm trying to grow my hair out. I showed Alma how much I wanted off. Three quarter's of an inch. She then proceeded to do whatever she wanted. When 3 and 4 inch strands started falling on my lap and on my face I said, "what are you doing? What is this? I only asked for this much." She said "yeah I know, this is just for all the layers, it won't be on the bottom." Did I ask for layers to be cut into my hair? No the absolute hell I did not! I wanted 3 quarters of an inch off all around. And Alma point cutted my hair rather than cutting straight across. So my hair looks uneven and shaggy. She then charged me $10 more than the price that is currently advertised right next to the register. I tipped Alma 20% as customary. But I am very unhappy with the overly layered, choppy, uneven, shaggy haircut that I received when I specifically said multiple times that I wanted a TRIM and not a full haircut. Plus the layers look like a staircase. It's not smooth; it's, chunk, go down 2 inches, chunk, go down 2 inches, chunk. You can't see the separations when they flat iron your hair to death, but the next morning you will see how the layers separate in into chunks based on hair length. It looks really bad. My hair grows very slowly and I am not happy with this at all. It will take me a year to grow these layers out to where they were. And again I'm trying to grow my hair out. Now I have to spend a year growing it back to the length it was 2 days ago. It just makes me never want to go to a stylist again, because most don't listen. Also, I wear my hair curly (I told Alma this and it was curly when walked in) and she flat ironed the hell out of my hair first and then she cut it. She said she had to because she can't cut curly hair because she can't tell how much she is taking off. She still took off too much. Who knows what a staircase haircut on stick-straight hair is going to look like when I wash and style it curly. A trim would have kept the same shape I had before, but this overly-layered haircut that I didn't want will likely have me looking like a curly mushroom. I hate haircuts like those. I fully regret going here. read more

I have lived 1.5 blocks from Salon Zoey for over four years and am just now unearthing this hidden gem! i'm very impulsive when it comes to my hair, meaning i don't book out appointments, but i am also very particular. I decided to give Salon Zoey a chance based on the reviews, proximity to my home and the salon's availability to take me the afternoon I called asking about some funky fashion color. I love it here! I normally just get trims to get rid of dead ends, but I LOVE how affordable it is and how quick (yet quality) their service is. Previously I've dreaded having my hair cut at other places because the waits are so long, they insist on adding other things that drive up the pricing (e.g. blow dry, styling, etc), and it can cost $50 or more just to get an inch taken off. But at Salon Zoey, I'm in and out, they listen to me, and their price is unbeatable (plus everyone I've interacted with is so nice). Thank you for all you do! read more

If I could give this place zero stars, hell NEGATIVE stars than I would. This place was eerie too me. Taken into a basement, no towels or sheet on the table, no music. She put wax on me and then she heard someone come down the stairs and said to me, "so sorry, only the owner is allowed downstairs , I need to check. "She left me there in the eerie room as she checked who it was leaving me with the wax on my "area".She came back in, she put some wax and asked me to hold my "area". I have never EVER been asked to hold my "area" in all the years that I have been waxed. She hurt me. She yanked at the wax( cloth strip) (I usually have hard wax) and she yanked and got stopped, yanked and stopped... I left the place with hairs still on my "Area" !!!! Worse waxing experience ever!!! I wanted to ask for my money back. I wanted a smooth kitty and I left with a red , swollen, injured Kitty with spikes on it. I now have to sit with tweezers to remove the leftover hairs!!!I wanted a smooth wax!!! I can tell that they are inexperienced with waxing. Let me start by saying- I am EXTREMELY picky with my hair and who gets to do what with it. After HOURS and HOURS of research- I contacted Zoey's hair salon. Making the appointment was extremely easy by phone- but when I got there- Zoey was 10-15 min late. I'm pretty patient so did not mind much- and after the great job she did, I completely forgot about it. I got a keratin treatment and and color treatment done (My pic is the two colored ugly hair to the nice long red hair). IT TOOK HOURS! but Zoey continued to work, and was very welcoming and comforting. My friend and I had easy going conversations with her, including how and what went into the Keratin treatment- and time flew by. I LOVED the results. I got so many compliments and the Keratin lasted a great 4-5 months. I've only gone back for a trim since- but I know she will be my regular salon, its a nice, cute and easy going place. If you're looking to have a keratin treatment done cheap, save up your money and have it done properly elsewhere. Do not cheap it out here. The girl first knotted my hair really bad while blow drying it, and then waved her brush recklessly into my hair. As anyone with frizzy/curly hair should know, you work your way up from the bottom to top with increasingly more distance covered so as not to tangle and break the hair. She didn't care though, if there was a tangle, she just ripped through it instead of gradually working it out. She was like a 3 year old with a barbie doll. She also kept brushing my ear which was extremely uncomfortable. How can you not realize that your brush's prongs are getting caught on someone's ear repeatedly? The girl had no concept of a client actually having a sensory system. I had never experienced so much pain at a salon before. I cringed every time i heard a bunch of hair snapping with each wave of her brush. The whole point of having this treatment done was to PREVENT breakage, not have a years worth of breakage done in one day. On top of that, the tangles that she didn't go through were left to the flat iron. Now i have a bunch of weak points in my hair from tangles that got flat ironed. Not to mention that she kept clunking my head with the darned thing. I had keratin treatments done before, and your hair is suppose to look glossed and super shiny similar to what you see on hair commercials, with an extremely silky texture.My results are like a typical flat iron straightening, except one that cost me a couple hundred dollars. The texture if anything, feels worse than what I started with, not to mention a bunch of short broken hairs sticking up on my head. Even with a 200 dollar discounted groupon, this is not anywhere near worth it. I could only imagine my blood pressure right now if i had spent the full amount for this crummy result. I don't know what product they are using that can be at fault-- if it's a really cheapo one, or some bootleg off the black market, but it sucks and my hair smells like the infamous Callery trees now (verified by a few other people who i had asked to smell my hair), except not as beautiful and it makes me want to gag. Two stars instead of one because I don't like being mean and I'm hoping she'll read this and learn to be a little more careful with people's hair. Also because I'm hoping she's a good person and is just unaware of how horrible a clients experience can be with her. Regardless of the care and service, If they can't find a better product for keratin treatment in the future, I hope they stop making money off whatever junk they're using and just remove this keratin service entirely as it may harm their reputation in the long run--especially since its their feature with groupon. read more

It's been a few weeks since Zoey gave me a keratin treatment and I am pleased with the results! I have very curly hair and I must admit I was afraid of how my hair would look after the keratin treatment. My hair is now so soft and manageable. The best part is, my hair looks healthy and I have no frizz whatsoever. To add to that, Zoey is a friendly and sweet girl! It was the first time I met her but we were talking as if we were long time friends! I had a hair cut and a Keratin Complex treatment by Alma back in December. I was very happy with both the hair cut and the Keratin treatment. After 4 months and a couple of more hair cuts the Keratin is still effective and my hair feels and looks great. BTW, once I left my earrings there and she was so nice to call me about it when she saw them and keep it for me in a nice box until my cousin could pick them up. My cousin and I are big fans. I got the Keratin treatment with a coupon from Groupon. My hair was extra dry and damaged because of bad dye job that I had gotten a few weeks prior. My hair was dry and breaking off at the ends to the point where I had to do something drastic. I decided on Zoe after I had read all of her amazing reviews. I am extremely happy with the job she did. My hair is so soft, hydrated and all around a million times healthier looking. The keratin treatment did wonders for restoring my hairs protein and sealing split ends. The total cost for me was 150$ because I had to use an extra ounce of Keratin. The price is very reasonable considering how effective the keratin treatment is (especially if you have damaged hair).I will definitely be returning in a few months for another keratin treatment. All in all, Zoe is a true professional at what she does and I would highly recommend her. read more

This was one of the worst keratin treatment experience I have ever had. Not just because the hair treatment was bad, but also Alma was very rude (she accused me of nonsense out of nowhere). Here's what happened: When I got here for keratin, Alma surprised me with an extra $67 cost for my hair length and said it was on the groupon. I checked later and there was no mention of extra cost. I agreed to the additional cost anyways, but before she started I had asked her if the treatment doesn't work the first time, would she redo or fix the treatment? She said "Yes, if you come back within two weeks." We agreed. Few days later after the first wash, my hair was still very frizzy, the back of my hair was in the same condition as pre-treatment. I sent her the pictures and called the salon. Alma told me that the keratin was actually working, which was total bullshit because I have had keratin before and my hair was in nowhere even 10% less frizzy than before. As I was politely telling her that keratin has worked on my hair in the past, all of a sudden she says "I know what you are doing. You are trying to get two treatment for price of one. You know I am a small salon. You can do that with big saloons but not with us" !!! Unbelievable. It makes no sense. If I wanted to get two treatments, why the hell would I do it within two weeks. No one has the desire to go through this 2+ hour long process twice, had it worked the first time. So, I wasted my money, time, experienced a terrible customer service that annoyed me and my hair is in same quality as before. Stay away from Alma and her saloon. She needs to learn customer service before turning off potential new clients like me. read more

I have been getting keratin treatments for 4 years now because I have naturally extremely curly and frizzy hair. I bought a groupon for a keratin treatment at Zoey's and decided to give it a shot because it was such a good deal. Probably should have done some research first on the place, but decided to just go for it. I walked in, and I was not even acknowledged, even though there was a stylist doing someone's hair. I stood there for about a minute until another stylist (I think Zoey) came out and just told me to get in the chair. There wasn't any chit chat, no hi how are you, I just told her I had an appointment and she directed me. It was weird. Usually stylists are chatty and friendly but she wasn't at all. She then proceeded to start my treatment, and what I found her doing was applying the keratin incorrectly. What they're supposed to do is section off your hair and apply keratin to 1-2 inch section and comb it through about 5 times to ensure that it takes. This process usually takes about 25 minutes. What Zoey did, was slather the keratin throughout my hair in a very quick way. She skipped the step where you're supposed to comb it through each section meticulously. And I assure you, my hair needs this step due to its naturally extreme curl. I was curious to see how her incorrect method would take to my hair. Well sure enough, after the keratin sat and she blow dryed and straightened my hair, it was extremely straight. I was almost shocked because I didn't think her method would work. But then I was curious what would happen once I washed my hair 72 hours later. Well, what I assumed would happen, happened. My hair was pretty much in the same state it was before I got the treatment. It didn't relax my curly roots much at all because the product had been applied incorrectly. When I had left the salon, Zoey told me that every time I come in for a treatment it would be for the groupon price I had paid. I thought this was an amazing deal, however I will not be using it. I would rather pay the going rate and get a treatment done well and CORRECTLY that is going to last. read more
